Deuteronomy 6:4-5

Scripture is God-breathed and true. When we memorize it, we carry His Word with us wherever we go.

As we read Deuteronomy together, we will memorize a portion of Moses’s instructions to the nation of Israel. This passage, known as the Shema, instructs the Israelites to hear and obey the Word of the Lord. The name is taken from the first word of verse 4. In Hebrew, shema means to hear or listen.

This week, we will begin memorizing Deuteronomy 6:4–9 by learning the first two verses. To help you memorize these verses, write down the passage and underline the two action verbs. Emphasize each one as you say the passage out loud

4 Listen, Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
—Deuteronomy 6:4-5

There are so many things that I love about this passage! It reminds me of how we were talking about the importance of remembering earlier in the week. The Shema is a declaration of faith that the Jewish people would recite in the morning and at night. It reorients our hearts back to the truth of who God is and how we are to rightly respond to Him.

It also made me think about how Jesus calls this the greatest commandment in Matthew 22:37-38. The two action verbs that we underlined “hear” and “love” are so interconnected. The phrase “Hear, O Israel” implies that you will not only listen but also obey. In John 14:15, Jesus says “If you love me, you will obey what I command.” Hearing God moves us to love Him and out of that love we respond in obedience. It all comes full circle.

May I crave your words more than the world’s words. May I stay in your word each day. Thank you Lord for providing for my every need. Praying for those in the path of Hurricane Ida for safety and for those having to stay behind. Our world is chaotic and noisy but you Lord offer strength, security and peace for Jesus has overcome the world. May I focus on your strength and goodness today. Help me to love you with all my heart, soul, strength and mind and love my neighbor as myself. Help me not to put anything in front of you Lord. Happy Sunday Sisters!

Amen! These are such powerful words.
Sometimes I know a verse or a section of verses, but I cannot remember the “address.” These verses stood out to me when they came up this summer. I want to work on memorizing more than I have in my adult life and work on it with my kids.
