The Reign of the Davidic King

Isaiah 10:20-34, Isaiah 11:1-16, Isaiah 12:1-6, Colossians 1:13

Scripture Reading: Isaiah 10:20-34, Isaiah 11:1-16, Isaiah 12:1-6, Colossians 1:13

When my family lived in Colorado, we saw firsthand the grave effects of a forest fire. We were driving along a mountain road, surrounded on every side by groves of aspens and pines. Suddenly, we came around a bend in the road and were immediately met with nothing but fallen trees and charred stumps. A lush alpine paradise turned barren wasteland.

This is the image I think of when I read Isaiah’s description of Israel. Because of their unfaithfulness to God and the many ways they had been cruel to the poor and vulnerable, they became like a wasteland in the eyes of the Lord, a forest ravaged by fire, leaving behind only blackened stumps. However, Isaiah’s words were not just a spiritual metaphor, for God raised up the Assyrian Empire who laid waste to Israel. Assyria was the axe prepared by God to cut down Israel’s tree.

But even though Assyria was God’s instrument of discipline for his people, Assyria’s own cruelty and arrogance was not overlooked. Isaiah described how God’s might would be brought against them, using a very familiar metaphor: “Look, the Lord GOD of Armies will chop off the branches with terrifying power, and the tall trees will be cut down, the high trees felled” (Isaiah 10:33). Israel and Assyria would both become barren wastelands.

Of the two, one of these trees would be cut down and remain dead. Assyria would be destroyed by the combined forces of Babylon, Media, and Persia, and nothing would ever rise from its ashes. However, the tree of the people of God, though also felled, had a very different future forecasted.

Then a shoot will grow from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots will bear fruit.
—Isaiah 11:1

Allow me to state the obvious: dead things don’t come back to life. At least not without divine intervention. And that is precisely the point—Isaiah’s vision is one that sees God stepping into the barren wasteland of Israel’s sinfulness and still bringing about a divine resurrection. Even as the royal line of David laid like a rotten stump, God had a plan to cause life to bloom from it. A new king would come from David’s line, and oh what a king He would be. “He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, he will not execute justice by what he hears with his ears, but he will judge the poor righteously and execute justice for the oppressed of the land” (vv.3-4).

The king who brings things from death to life is Jesus. And what He did for Israel He promises to do for all who place their trust in the resurrected King.

I’m on gardening duty today. It amazes me when I cut back the dead leaves from the previous year and see life sprouting again in the new season.

Sing to the lord for he has done glorious things. Isaiah 12.9

I love that standing in his creation he has done glorious things, sometimes I just need to slow down to see them !

Isaiah 10:33-34 is pruning and purification. Isaiah 11:1-5 is restoration. Then finally, Isaiah 11:6-9 brings peace. What a beautiful progression.

Isaiah 11 gives such a beautiful picture of hope! God’s promise that from the stump of Jesse, a new branch (Jesus) will rise, bringing justice, peace, and restoration. Even in judgment, God’s plan was always to redeem and restore. And Isaiah 12 reminds us to respond with trust and joy, knowing that our salvation is secure in Him. No matter what we face, we can rest in the promise that God is our strength and our song. ❤️

  21. Margaret W. says:

I think my biggest sin/challenge right now is walking in faith when the world seems to be collapsing around me. We as Americans (at least those of us who are white and financially comfortable) have known so much peace and stability in our lifetimes that it it truly hard to cope with all of the changes and uncertainties and shifting alliances of the past few weeks. The bright side is that it has given me a wonderful opportunity to speak to my developmentally challenged son about God’s faithfulness, and how this is the time when we need to lean into it. And he has been angry at God and the church we went to when he was a child for almost 20 years now, so that is nothing short of a miracle. One that probably wouldn’t have happened if all were right in the world, which I am realizing even as I type this out. All glory to our gracious Father! Thank you sisters, for walking through this with us. ❤️

    1. Gwineth52 says:

      Yes, Margaret W, I join your refrain…
“truly hard to cope with all of the changes and uncertainties and shifting alliances”.
We pray to the Lord. Lord have mercy.

  22. Cheryl Blow says:

SEARCHING- thank you for the prayer list! Praying for all! Also, praying for Victor and his dad!

Delivered from darkness and transferred to Christ’s kingdom! Thank you, Lord, for this precious gift! God is in the business of bringing dead things to life, streams in deserts, dry bones back to life, hope in the midst of struggles, graves into gardens!

Made me think of song by Brandon Lake and Elevation Worship, Graves into Gardens!”

God is good! He knows what we need when we need it! My aunt lost her husband in November several years ago but I never get tired of sharing her story. Her husband had given her a rose bush that just stopped blooming. On the day of his funeral she looked out her window. She couldn’t believe it! There on this plant she thought was long dead was a single rose! She believed it was Gods way of giving her a sign that He was in control and the love of her life was sending her love! God just reminding her of His great love for her!

    1. Rhonda J. says:

      Beautiful!! What a gift!
I too started singing “Graves into Garden” when I started reading your words!! Great song!! There is a new song by Elevation I am loving…(thinking face)…um…”There is a Name?” It’s SO good!! It’s gonna be my Lent theme song!!

  23. Rhonda J. says:

Can I ask you to pray for my niece Savannah. She is young and searching, and I was able to share some powerful (hopefully) testimony this morning of my own time of brokenness and then proceeding to make bad, and more bad choices, time and time again! I told her where most people say that things happen to make them who they are with no regrets…No, there are plenty of regrets and shameful choices that leave their painful scars that I so regret. I keep encouraging her to reach out to God and let him change her life. I know it feels so abstract to her. She is 21, please pray someone comes into her life that is a Christian that can perhaps get her involved in a church. That would be my prayer that God is putting on my heart! I know we all have these precious people in our lives that we want to have a Damascus Road moment!! I just worry about her safety because of some of the choices she will be participating in. Thank you.

    1. Sharon, Jersey Girl says:

      Praying for Savannah. ❤️

    2. Kristy says:

Praying for Savannah! What a gift that she has you to come to for questions and answers. The fact that she is searching is so huge. Out of the complete blue (two weeks ago this coming Sunday) I had an 18 year old boy randomly text me. It simply said, Do you still run a church I want to be baptized. First I cracked up because I have never ran a church:) but it was the most exciting text I have ever received. I have no idea why he reached out to me. I don’t see him often or speak often. We texted, he asked questions, one being if he could finish his tattoo after he was baptized:) He came over that Thursday for tacos and more talking. He got baptized on Sunday, went to youth group that evening with my children. I don’t know why Mar text me but I am so thankful that for some reason God allowed me to be used in his story. God is doing something in the lives of our young people. Mar said I havent really been living wrong, but I haven’t been living right either and I want to change. Praying for Savannah as she searches, you as you plant seeds, and I look forward to the day that you share some awesome God news with us regarding her salvation!

      1. Rhonda J. says:

Oh how amazing Kristy!! Love that testimony! I too believe are young people are searching and finding the true Lord of Lords, King of Kings, faithful Friend and Father!!

      2. Cee Gee says:

  24. Sharon, Jersey Girl says:

“The king who brings things from death to life is Jesus.” Jesus is the only One who can bring the dead to life. It is only through Him that we can pass from death to life. Oh how I wish the lost would see this. There is no other way to have eternal life except through the shed blood of Christ – nothing else can save a person. Not one good work, not even “he’s suffered long enough, I know God will allow him into heaven now.” How sad it is for those who believe this. No amount of suffering on earth will give us access to heaven, unless we have put our complete faith in Jesus Christ – the One who takes away the sin of the world. I am so grieved and saddened by those who die without Christ. I can not ever imagine the horror of standing before God and hearing Him say, “depart from me, I never knew you.” By then, it’s too late.
    —-
Father God, please help me to be bold for my faith. Give me the courage to share the gospel with the lost, give me a burden for souls. In Jesus name Amen.

Sadly, my brother in-law Joe passed away this morning. To my knowledge he was not saved, but only God knows the heart. We can hope that there was a time he called out to God for salvation.

Asking for prayers of wisdom & grace for answering the questions the family has begun to ask – “where is he, is he in heaven?”

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Oh that first paragraph…SO Powerful and truth!! We are told it is imperative to reach the lost before they are lost eternally. But it is a choice, their free will. The word says it is narrow, and not all will come. If we believed otherwise we would live our life how we want…and wait till death to decide. We have to be wise, and stick to scripture.
Prayers for your family Sharon! Thank you for sharing in an urgent truth.

    2. Kristy says:

Oh Sharon, so so hard! I pray that there was a time that Joe did put his faith in Jesus. My heart is with you during this time as I know the pain of losing someone that you are not confident that they ever gave their life to Christ. It is a sadness like any other. I will be praying for you as your family looks to you for answers. And as they look for you to give them the answer that they want to hear Big big prayers! God will use you during this time.

    3. Cee Gee says:

Sharon, you have spoken such truth! Praying as you requested for answering the questions coming your way. What an opening to say, “We can’t know for sure where Joe us, but YOU can be sure if where you will spend eternity…” ❤

    4. Adrienne says:

I am so very sorry for your family’s loss, Sharon. ❤️

    5. Wendy B says:

I’m doing sorry, Sharon. May the Lord’s comfort surround you and your family.

  25. Donna Wolcott says:

Good morning sisters, for those who don’t receive the workbook, there are two worksheet pages at the end of today’s readings. I wish I could share all the questions to answer but way to many to type. I will give you a few that you are asked to reflect on and answer.
    – Places or people the prophecies in this week’s reading were directed toward.
    – An encouraging or challenging verse
    – A question to ponder and investigate
    – Descriptive details about God and His people
    – How God’s people were called to respond
    – Specific sins revealed or warnings given
There is much more. Longing for continued restoration. Prayers and hugs.

    1. Sharon, Jersey Girl says:

      Thank you Donna! ❤️

    2. Cee Gee says:

      Thanks so much, Donna! ❤

  26. Charlotte Lamb says:

Lord, please give me hope in desperate times. When my faith suffers, bring me back to life! In Jesus name, amen ❤️

    1. Gwineth52 says:

Yes, dear Charlotte…in the name of the Lord…
      “ashes into roses”

  27. Kristy says:

On that day the root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples. The nations will look to him for guidance, and his resting place will be glorious. On that day the Lord will extend his hand a second time to recover the remnant of his people who survive. .. He will lift up a banner for the nations and gather the dispersed of Israel; he will collect the scattered of Judah from the corners of the earth. The Lord will divide the Gulf of Suez. He will wave his hand over the Euphrates with his MIGHTY wind and will split it into seven streams, letting people walk through on foot. There will be a HIGHWAY for the remnant of his people who will survive, as there was for Israel when they came up from the land of Egypt.
    This just excites me!
A banner of victory… a highway through the gulf… the Lords people getting to be a part of HIS victory lap! I’m just picturing how exciting it is to celebrate a banner when your kids or favorite sports team win. How stinking exciting will this be one day??
Thank you Jesus! That you came and that you WON! We are on the winning team, today! Lets live like it, lets get more people on the team, lets keep defeating the enemy one soul at a time. Hell lost another one! I am free, I am free!
    Happy FRIDAY!!

    1. Sharon, Jersey Girl says:

GM ladies. I love this verse! Such hope! Then a shoot will grow from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots will bear fruit.—Isaiah 11:1
It’s so encouraging to know that we serve a God who brings dead things to life! And that even when surrounded by our own seemingly unending, dead situations (stumps) He is at work, bringing new life. Holly Furtick preached on this verse last year and it was very impactful. I posted it on our FB page.

  29. Cee Gee says:

Isaiah 9b the land will be as full
of the knowledge of the Lord
as the sea is filled with water.
10 On that day the root of Jesse
will stand as a banner for the peoples.
The nations will look to him for guidance, and his resting place will be glorious.

14 who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.

Counting My Blessings by Seph Schleuter
God, I’m still counting my blessings
All that You’ve done in my life
The more that I look in the details
The more of Your goodness I find
Father on this side of Heaven
I know that I’ll run out of time
But I will keep counting my blessings
Knowing I can’t count that high
    .
Blessed by you sisters and send love, hugs and prayers from a windy South Carolina, USA! ❤

Good morning and Happy Friday!! YES, I’m SO glad its Friday as its been a LONG week! AMEN to Rhonda’s comment this morning as those were my thoughts this morning. I couldn’t have put it better! JESUS is the reason for this LENT Season! I could not stand here today if it weren’t for MY JESUS. Its through those burdens and trails and JESUS giving me the strength to face them of why I am here today. It’s all JESUS!

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Happy “your favorite day” Mari V!! We love your “my Jesus” phrase and passion you share with us!!

  33. Rhonda J. says:

I love the imagery of a new life shooting out of a stump. Every Spring I used to LOVE going out into the lifeless garden from a long Chicago winter and move some of the dead away and see tender,GREEN plants beneath!! It was like Christmas to me, even better! And to watch them pop up and grow would make me feet want to do a gig (Tina)..I probably did do happy dances there in the garden every Spring. Even here I have new shoots coming up in my indoor plants and I am overwhelmed of watching them open. God gives us such beauty to watch nature.
But God’s wrath is nothing to play around with. He wants a people that follow him, love him, revere Him and give their everything to Him! He sets forth rules for a reason. Yet we are stiff-necked people and seek after worldly things. He will not be mocked or second, third, or last. There will be punishment (consequences) to our actions and choices. They might be obvious or they may be something lost they we will never know on this side. I have lived my life in my own way, that led to defeat time and time again. I have learned the hard way that the God of the universe, has a good plan, not to harm me, but to prosper me, to give me a hope and a future! (Jeremiah 19:11). I am his daughter, would a father give his hungry daughter a stone? He loves me beyond measure, and he prunes when needed to make us grow beyond what we otherwise would. He gives and he takes away. Yet, He takes our burdens and heartaches, and trials and carries them for us when we cast them on him and sustains us.
I can’t imagine (well, I can), how Isaiah longed for the people to listen to him (God). The burden he must have felt, because I kinda feel that burden myself. For God has spoken to me, and given me a desire, a passion to shout it to the world—GOD is GOOD…he loves you…he wants you to become his child…to see him…to know the truth…!!! Oh how I want to hold a sign on a corner and shout it some days. Yet he sends me on missions such as jail ministry and homeless ministries to share. He will kindly put people in my path to pray for or hug, or smile. He has a plan…thank God, b/c I do not know the way, nor the words to say. But Holy Spirit is IN me!!! What a beautiful gift. We can all be Isaiah, and give God’s words to the people, do they ever need to hear them! We can’t keep our light hidden and hope somehow it happens. We must be strong and courageous and sow the seeds ourselves, water the tender plants, help prune if given the order. The fields are ready, laid before us everywhere!! Let’s be a people of God, the remnant that remains and shoots up strong and multiplies!!! Amen and Amen in Jesus name!!!

    Love you sisters!!

    1. Melani Fryer says:

Love this. ❤️ Thanks be to God.

    2. Mari V says:

AMEN!! To this I say Amen! These are my thoughts this morning as well Rhonda! I too, sometimes want to SHOUT it out that JESUS loves them! SO much! Wish they could see it! I hope they can see it through how we faced our own trails and burdens! AND how we handled it! Its because of JESUS and ONLY JESUS why we stand today! Love you sweet lady!

    3. Cee Gee says:

Thanks, Rhonda, for taking time to bless us with your thoughts each day. I often think of how timid you were when you felt God leading you to pray with your neighbors after the hurricane a few years ago. Just look at you know- all glory to God!Because of your obedience, He has blessed you in so many ways! Thank you for being a great example and for encouraging us to do the same.

      1. Rhonda J. says:

Yes, Cee Gee!! I was SO timid and awkward, and had never prayed out loud for anyone (being a Christian my whole life!!) God has moved and given me so much empowerment and confidence that HE will use me!! Praise God!! I try to tell this wonderful news to my groups when I see they don’t feel like they know how to pray or be used!! God just needs a willing heart and a YES Lord, send me!! Oh how wonderful it is!!! Thanks for sharing this for others!! I love sharing our journeys here in this special community!!

    4. Tami says:

  35. Meagan C says:

The fact that God had a plan for deliverance and restoration even before He executed judgement is so incredibly amazing. We have a Heavenly Father who truly loves us eternally. To the point of sending His own Son to die for us. Praise God from whom all blessings flow! We need not fear the World because we are the precious children of the one who holds the world in His hands!

A personal update – This week went much better than last week with my husband out of town with his new job. I could feel your prayers. Thank you all!

Also, a story of God’s mercy! My husband took a new job 3 hours away and is staying there during the week to work. In the evenings, he is looking for housing for us so my son and I can hopefully join him soon.

Last night he and his real estate agent went to see a house, and found the current owner unresponsive in his bedroom. By the looks of it, he had fallen after getting out of the shower and couldn’t get himself up. To make matters even scarier, he had fallen on his oxygen tank hoses and his medication had spilled on the floor. Thankfully my husband and his agent found him still breathing, called 911, got him some help. Please pray God will heal him. He most likely would have died had Eric and his agent not been there. He is an elderly man who lives alone, and is finally deciding he can’t do it anymore. Such a heartbreaking story, but I am so thankful God sent someone to help him! May he find the rest and assistance he needs!

Blessings to you this weekend ladies!

    1. Adrienne says:

    2. Rhonda J. says:

Oh wow! What a miracle he was found in time!!
Praying you find a home soon and will be able to go!! That’s exciting to begin in a new city…just like a stump in the beginning, you will see your lives grow and blossom!

    3. Cee Gee says:

Oh, Meagan, how sad for that gentleman and how scary for Eric, but oh, what a blessing, too! Continued prayers for you, Eric, and your little one. You will have lots to talk about this weekend! Praying the right house is found soon and that your current home sells quickly and easily! ❤ By the way, my husband did the same, riding around after work to check out various neighborhoods. ☺

    4. Kristy says:

Wow! What an intervention from God. I cannot imagine how thankful this mans family was that your husband was there. So cool to think of during this hard time for you that while you are missing your husband God had him where he needed him. His presence there saved this mans life but also feel it is a sign for you and an encouragement for you from GOD!
      He is SO so good!
Thank you for sharing this as a reminder to me that when things are hard, God is always up to something!

This weeks questions from the leader guide:
What is your experience with lent? Have you ever observed this season individually or in your community?

How did Isaiah respond to Gods presence? What does Isaiah’s response to God show us about how Isaiah view him?

How do you tend to respond to sin in your own life?

How might this Lenten season expand your understanding or awareness of sin?

What passages in this week’s readings were confusing?

What passages in this weeks readings brought you hope?

How can Isaiah 6 shape the way you engage with The Lord or the people around you this week?

    1. Cee Gee says:

      Thanks so much, Caroline! ❤

  37. Sarah Carmona says:

The SRT Bible has a devotion that ties perfectly into this devotion. My favorite part says “Sometimes everything must be torn down in order for us to see that Christ is truly at the center of it all, the reason for everything, the source of our life and all life. Even in a seemingly barren land, He rises up. The root and the branch, the Aloha and the Omega. He was never absent. He has always been here”

    1. Nickie Hurdle says:

I read this as well…so powerfully true!

    2. Jen Cox says:

Thank you for sharing this. I read this devotion earlier this week and this prompted me to reread it today. It was truly what I needed to hear and read again.

    3. Kerry Rowley says:

I read this too. It was powerful

    4. Kristy says:

  39. Kimberly Ann says:

One key takeaway from Isaiah 10-12 for today is that even in times of difficulty and judgment, God remains faithful and offers hope. His justice will prevail, but His mercy and the promise of a coming Savior bring peace and restoration for those who trust in Him.

      1. Rhonda J. says:

Amen! Turn every emotion to praise!! He is worthy of praise..

    5. Sherri says:

Praying you feel his arms around you tighter than ever before. I know what it’s like to be where you are. Keep running to Him!

    6. Cee Gee says:

When hearing Isaiah’s prophecies and promises given to him by God, the Israelites may not have known what to think, but this Gentile is so thankful for the mercy, grace and salvation promised and provided to even me. And yes, for discipline and teaching too.

  50. Tina says:

Then a shoot will grow from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots will bear fruit.
    —Isaiah 11:1
    .
This seriously had my heart doing somersaults and cartwheels.. I could feel a song of praise rise up in me, for I was reminded of my rose, that was hacked, cut down and what was left was a battered and messed up stump, by someone trimming my holly Bush that was close to the rose! I saw this disaster every day, and every day my heart hurt for the beauty that was gone from the front of my cottage.
    .
    BUT GOD..
    .
I’m getting excited again, I feel a crescendo within me.. BUT GOD, one day as I looked sadly at the stump, I noticed a shoot, a shoot, and within weeks, another off that shoot..
I just have to sing Oh happy day, whilst my feet do a little jig..
    .
    BUT GOD..
On that day, I DID give thanks to the Lord.
In the general scheme of life, the loss of the rose was not grand scale, but to my heart, this was a huge, big deal, my heart was sad, and Father God, gave me hope, and a testimony of how even in a dark place of sadness, He sees and wants to make it right. He wants my best. He works for our best..
    .
That rose is budding now, and it grows in strength.. I can’t wait to see it in full bloom. Thank you Father God.❤
    .
    Give thanks to the LORD,
    .
I will shout it from the rooftops.
    .
Make His works known among His peoples.
Declare that His name is exalted..
(I declare, absolutely and wholeheartedly, declare).
    .
Sing to the LORD, for He has done glorious things.. And He continues every day to do great things..
    .
Cry out and sing, citizen of Zion,
For the Holy One of Israel is among you in His greatness..
    .
    Oh HAPPY Day!
    .
Thank you Father God, that you do not push us away, or strike us down, but instead you show us your greatness and love, covered in hope..Thank you Lord God, Thanking you with praise!
    .
    AMEN.
    .
Happy Friday, you beauties, Be blessed today, whatever your day looks like knowing Father God, is near, covering you in His love and grace..❤
    Much love, always..
    .
    Tina.❤

    5. Kristen Grimes says:

      ❤️❤️❤️

    6. Kristy says:

I have a similar story and it also makes me think of your words. I love peonies. They are my most favorite flower. My mother in law had given me a peonie start from her mothers yard. She always had the most beautiful peonies lining her driveway. My son who was new to weed trimming whacked that start right up. He felt so bad when he realized. This year I had the most beautiful peonies finally thrive back from being chopped down. Its a sweet memory and one my son and I joke of each spring.

    7. Barb says:

When my mom passed away 8 years ago, a friend gave me a beautiful delphinium plant. I have enjoyed watching it bloom every year. Well, last year I husband was “helping” me with the weeding and he whacked it with the lawnmower. We are still in the throes of winter here so haven’t given much thought to that plant. But after today’s reading and these comments, I can’t wait to see if it will start to grow again this spring. Hopefully it will come back even more beautiful.
