Judah’s Sins Denounced

Open Your Bible

Isaiah 3:1-26, Isaiah 4:1-6, Isaiah 5:1-30, Matthew 18:6-9

Throughout our Lent 2025: He Will Save Us reading plan, we have compiled selections from both our She Reads Truth and He Reads Truth writers. The same devotionals can be found on the She Reads Truth and He Reads Truth apps and websites for the remainder of this reading plan.

Perhaps one of the things that will most astonish us in heaven is the many woes we’ve been spared.

In Isaiah’s day, the Lord looked at the lives of His children of promise and felt hot anger rise within Him (Isaiah 5:25). Though God had clearly revealed both His glorious nature and His everlasting love, Israel chronically chose the wormy fruit of sin instead. A perfectly holy, always just God could only have one response:

Woe to them,

For they have brought disaster on themselves.
—Isaiah 3:9

Through His prophet, the Lord went on to declare a waterfall of woes for the children He loved.

Woe to the vain and self-absorbed (Isaiah 3:16–24).
Woe to the liars (Isaiah 5:18).
Woe to the arrogant (v.21).
Woe to the drunkards (v.22).
Woe to the crooked (v.23).

And especially heartbreaking,
Woe to those who call evil good and good evil (v.20).

It’s tempting to race through such passages with cultural detachment, simply imagining both apathy toward sin from God’s people and His angry response as a thing of the past. But God does not change (Malachi 3:6), and neither has our sin nature. We’re all prone to run from God’s will and ways and celebrate our own sinful selfishness.

Woe to us should we put our hope in God softening toward sin. The position this puts us in is beyond precarious. Like the people of Israel, indifference toward God’s intolerance of our rebellion will heap disaster on our heads. We are rightfully jarred by such realities.

And yet, tucked into chapters that outline God’s righteous and powerful judgment, we see a hope more powerful than the punishment we deserve.

On that day the Branch of the LORD will be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land will be the pride and glory of Israel’s survivors….when the Lord has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and cleansed the bloodguilt from the heart of Jerusalem….For there will be a canopy over all the glory, and there will be a shelter for shade from heat by day, and a refuge and shelter from storm and rain.
—Isaiah 4:2, 4–6

The Father’s anger toward sin hasn’t softened. He’s simply poured the judgment we deserve on the Son so that you and I can be cleansed from our sin and filth. We now know that the Branch of the LORD is Jesus (Isaiah 11:1, Zechariah 3:8, John 15:5–11). How beautiful and glorious is He!

Oh, let us live sober toward our own sinful tendencies. Let us tremble at the woes our sin has earned. But let us resist wallowing and move to worship, for our Savior, Jesus, is the shelter and refuge we need from the judgment we deserve.

I have been praying and wanting to hear God’s voice. I feel lost with my jobs and I am trying to find the patience to wait for God to reveal his plan in his time. It’s hard and like someone craving their best friends hug, I crave to hear his voice. To settle me down and encourage me on until his plan is revealed. I believe God has plans for me and I pray for patience in this time of waiting!

    1. Melissa says:

Beautiful! As our reading states, We have hope more powerful than the punishment we deserve. Thank you, Jesus for the blood applied.

  23. Mel says:

My main takeaway was the idea of God’s “support and supply”. In Hebrew, both words sound similar (think Isaiah used a deliberate wordplay), and derive from the same root word, mish’en – bringing in a word picture of God’s ‘staff’ or ‘rod’.

The passages painted a picture for me, of what it looks like to be without God’s support and grace. Such a dire picture!

I readily focus on where I would want ‘more’ from God – more health, more time… the list goes on. But I easily forget just how much I am receiving from Him already, moment by moment. The grace of the Cross is foremost on that list. Thank You God, for the precious gift of Jesus! That through Him, a sour (‘wild’) grape like me can enter Your Kingdom.

  24. Alayna P. says:

    Lord,

Thank You for Your righteousness and justice. Help me to walk in Your truth and not be led astray by sin. Give me the wisdom and strength to remove anything in my life that separates me from You. Purify my heart and make me more like You.

    Amen ❤️

  25. Shibi Pereira says:

  26. Sarah Ritchie says:

It’s so easy to dismiss “minor sins” and just sort of wish them away. I am hoping during Lent this year I pay more attention to timely repentance.

  27. megan henderson says:

I really liked the phrase of indifference- I think that’s one of the most common trap today’s Christian’s fall into- being indifferent. If we follow Christ, we are called to take a stand and be firm for what doesn’t align with Him.

This thought from the devotional is one to really ruminate on. “Oh, let us live sober toward our own sinful tendencies. Let us tremble at the woes our sin has earned.”

Woe to me to if I ever try to justify or diminish the magnitude and weight of my sin or expect that because God is forgiving, gracious and merciful that I forget that sin deeply grieves His heart. My hearts desire must be to pursing righteousness, turning from sin and walking in fellowship with Him. Thank you Jesus, that you are our Savior.

It is exciting to see so many new faces joining in this study – welcome! Such great reflections, insights and comments these first couple days and great to study and learn with you all.

  38. Brandi Young says:

Thank you for mercy! That you never do what we deserve and that you look at us through that spotless clean beautiful blood of Jesus!

  39. Olivia Warner says:

It’s a good challenge to consider God hasn’t softened towards sin. While of course I enjoy His mercy, I ought to take more seriously His view of sin. I should be far more concerned about His opinion and judgement of sin than I am worried about the world’s response to what I do. Yet too easily I worry about pleasing man and act as though God will just move on and not be phased by my passivity and tolerance of what is wrong in His eyes.

    Hello Shes
“We’re all prone to run from God’s will and ways and celebrate our own sinful selfishness.”
Oh My, is this ever so, for me, my friends!
    Sprinting, even!
    God, free me from self-fascination.
Jesus, set my life upon Yours.
Holy Spirit, turn me towards sacrifice.
    Pray to live soberly.
    Stop pushing & pulling.
    Slowing down.
As should be, not just through Lent.

    1. Rhonda J. says:

      Amen!

  47. Leslie Gray says:

The most sobering part of the passages today for me was “God’s disappointing Vineyard” ch. 5: 1-7.
It talks about how much work He has done to make sure the vineyard produces good grapes, but after all the care and love it produced wild grapes. Just like the children of Israel, the Lord has loved us and cared for us and tended to us, all for us to turn wild and go rogue. Isaiah goes on to explain what He will do to the “disappointing vineyard”. I’m so thankful for Jesus. That even when we go rogue and disregard all the love and care of our Father, Jesus is standing there in our place. And He calls us back to Him and back into the loving care of our Father the vinedresser.

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Yes, definitely something to regard and think on, just as our kids often do! We do so much for them to have a great life…and then…lol! But they usually appreciate it at some point. It certainly breaks my heart now of how rogue I went, selfishly. And so thankful that He welcomes us back with a big hug and love through Jesus! What a good and loving God!!

  48. Erica Chiarelli says:

I thought of this when reading about wanting God to soften His stance towards sin…we want Him to be soft towards us…but when it’s someone hurting us, we want God’s full wrath to be poured out. But God who is a good God must be just and the same towards our sin and others as well.

  49. Cheryl Blow says:

Thanks for all of your insights! Praying for all of you! My prayer is for God to keep me humble and soften my heart. May I see through His eyes and forgive me for ever taking the gift of Salvation for granted! His Gift, Christ’s obedience on the cross and provision for my redemption! He did not give me what I deserved, but instead gave me what I didn’t deserve!

  50. Cheryl Blow says:

Praying for your 2 yr old daughter that she will have no complications from bumping her head. I teach 2’s & 3’a. It is hard to know if they are hurt or not or how bad it is. They have a tendency to say yes to all your questions? (On a lighter note, when asking questions about our lesson, the answer to every question is Jesus or God.)

We will be praying for her and your house!

  51. Kris says:

God does not tolerate sin. These verses are very clear. Repent and change your ways. It’s the only way to be free from the punishments. God is Holy, and in His grace we can be made holy, too.

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Yes, and that needs to be said more!

    2. Tina says:

      Yes!!!❤

  52. Susan Burley says:

“We see a hope more powerful than the punishment we deserve.” How amazing is our God that He is so forgiving!

    1. Diana Rigdon says:

I find it so hard to imagine such an amazing and forgiving God, but I know He Is!! I do believe! The knowledge leaves me in a state of amazement and wonder!! I thank God for His love!

    2. Tina says:

Yes! I love your words Susan, such truth, even if it’s hard to grasp..
      BUT GOD..
      Amen.❤

  53. Adrienne says:

I am finally caught up! (It was so wonderful to read the end of “Promises of God” AFTER the start of this Lenten study. I am glad I started with the current study and worked my way back. Of course, Lent is a time of repentance, but oh the promises that we have!)
    .
Lynne… I am so sorry for the loss of your precious Jack. May the loving arms of our Heavenly Father hold you so very close.

  54. Mary Penn says:

    Amen!

  55. Mari V says:

Our Father God wishes NO ONE to perish without Him! Love how Erin explains this without sugar coating it. And even though its clear our Father’s anger towards sin is not softened (well said Erin). He gave us His Son, OUR JESUS! I can’t tell you how many times I play over and over in my head the things I do, said, played out during my day and wish I could take them back, yet my JESUS continues to love me and forgives me and I have the Holy Spirit to remind/nudge at me when it necessary and trust me….its a lot!

  56. Rhonda J. says:

Like others have said, we live in such a time where we think it is loving to accept everything “under the sun.” When we have a society that “sin” is everywhere and celebrated. And then Christians, that follow after Jesus, seem to be labeled as hateful and judging. It makes me sad, and reading Isaiah (again), just magnifies the warnings the Lord is telling His people. Like…I LOVE YA”LL, why don’t you see it!!? I want you to be my people, and be different, but you are joining in with the others…!” I can feel his broken heart and judgement. How can we expect there to be no judgement?! There IS expectation, there are rules, there will be a day of reckoning…yet we are clearly told. “Until the whole world hears” so that none should perish. We have to be a little more urgent with the message. But until people see their own need for a Savior, it seems for naught. I know we have many prodigals we are earnestly praying for. We want our loved ones to see the light. There is no chance after. No one to “buy” you out. It is a choice that affects your eternal destination! But we don’t want to wait, have our fun until we are closer to old age…for time is short, and how we live matters. Picking up our cross, seeking after righteousness, living for the Kingdom now, obeying our Father, and sharing the good news. Every day counts!

    1. Mari V says:

      Love this Rhonda!

  58. Sarah Carmona says:

Seeing the depths of God’s wrath and judgement truly shows us the mercy and grace that we have through Christ.

  59. Sharon, Jersey Girl says:

“Let us live sober toward our own sinful tendencies. Let us tremble at the woes our sin has earned. But let us resist wallowing and move to worship, for our Savior, Jesus, is the shelter and refuge we need from the judgment we deserve.”

Yes, we are sinful – all our righteousness is as filthy rags. (Isaiah 64:6) We earn judgement and death…But God! He loved us so and sent His Son to die for our sin, to wipe them away as if they never existed. What a great and glorious God we serve! So let us come, bow down before Him and worship at His feet!

Brings to mind this praise song…

Come let us worship and bow down
Let us kneel before the Lord, our God, our Maker
Come let us worship and bow down
Let us kneel before the Lord, our God, our Maker
    For He is our God
And we are the people of His pasture
I’m a sheep of His hand
Just a sheep of His hand

Happy Tuesday She’s – may we all bask in the glorious light of Jesus today!❤️

    1. Tina says:

      Blessed. Thank you, Sharon❤

  60. Jamie Swope says:

I’m so grateful for our God of Justice who sees sin for what it is.

  61. Caroline Bridges says:

As Taylor Swift once said in The smallest man who ever lived “I would’ve died for your sins, instead I just died inside.” The people just died inside. They probably didn’t realize that they were doing something wrong until it was too late.

  62. Meagan C says:

Good morning! Would you please pray for me? My husband has taken a job out of state, and has gone ahead of my son and I to start work and find a place for us to live. I’m overwhelmed by this sudden single motherhood. My son is a toddler and is having a very hard time understanding where Daddy is and why we only see him on the weekends. Neither of us is sleeping well, and my anxiety is often getting the best of me. Please pray for peace, rest, and God’s guidance. Thank you!

      1. Meagan C says:

We are selling our home! And going from debt free to a new mortgage, so there are a lot of layers! Thank you for your prayers!

    6. Carol J Mylin says:

This sounds very difficult, Megan! Praying for you today… i am sharing part of a devotional that spoke to my ♥️ this morning…praying that it blesses you, too!

      “Breathe out: What if?
Breathe in: God will perfect what concerns me (Psalm 138:8, KJV).
Breathe out: I can’t do this.
Breathe in: God will give me the strength to do what pleases Him (Philippians 4:13).

Father, help me breathe in belief in You and Your Word, and help me exhale unbelief and the lies that prey on my mind and heart. Help me hold fast to the Truth as I walk through this day, and strengthen me each time I choose to breathe it in. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

      1. Victoria E says:

        Amen

    7. Rhonda J. says:

Lord give Meagan strength and encouragement to get through this trial! You have equipped her, to do all things through YOU. I pray she will lean into you and feel that embodiment that you will provide!
Be sure to ask for help where you need it from a neighbor or mom friends! When I was a single mom I couldn’t have done it without help! Hopefully you are part of a church as well!

      1. Tina says:

Praying for your little family. Praying especially for you and your heart to know and have peace.. Because it is in you having and knowing peace that the little fella will also feel peace and not the anxiety he feels in you.. This is a difficult time, BUT GOD, he is near. Rest on Him and look at and to the ‘prize’. This too will pass! And sooner than you think. Will continue to hold you and yours up in prayers..❤

    10. Meagan C says:

Thank you to everyone who prayed for me! I definitely felt your prayers yesterday!

  63. Kimberly Reed says:

    Amen Amen!!!

  64. Kristen P says:

Such a good reminder to be grateful for His judgment too as it demonstrates His justice. Our good Father could not rightly let our wrongs go unpunished, but sent Jesus to take the penalty for anyone who trusts in Him and accepts the gift AND left us with His Holy Spirit to guide and guard us. Thanks be to God!

  65. Jennifer Jackson says:

Move me from wallowing in sin to worshipping Jesus my Lord and King.
The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock in whom I take refuge; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise and I have been saved from my enemies. Psalm 18:2, 3

  66. Kimberly says:

My takeaways from Isaiah 3-5: to live justly, maintain integrity, and be mindful of God’s holiness. It also encourages me to have hope in God’s redemptive plans, even in the face of adversity and judgment.

  67. Lauren Garza says:

We do not deserve salvation and his grace. We are sinners in need of a savior. Judgment is coming but yet so is His glory for the righteous.
He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. His views and feelings towards sin has not changed. Our hearts have, so let us fix our hearts on truth and see the weight of our sins yet let that not push us to worry but to worship for what has been done for us through the blood of Christ!

    1. Rhonda J. says:

      Yes, so good!

    2. Tina says:

      Amen.❤

  68. Aimee D-R says:

Amen amen! Thank You for making a way when there was no way Father God. I. Jesus mighty saving name, Amen

  69. Searching says:

Today’s Scripture readings bring current day confirmation of the words (likely Solomon’s) in Ecclesiastes 1:9-10
That which has been is what will be,
That which is done is what will be done,
And there is nothing new under the sun.
10 Is there anything of which it may be said,
    “See, this is new”?
It has already been in ancient times before us.
    .
These chapters in Isaiah could’ve been taken from today’s headlines in my country. Woe are we. Lord, please open the eyes of those who turn further from you each day, and of those who encourage the turning, May we be well aware when it’s us, by words or actions.

There was so much in these passages! They also showed me what life could be like if Jesus hadn’t come yet. I am speechless with gratitude for His sacrifice!

    1. Lauren Ruhe says:

      Amen to this!

  71. Laura says:

“Woe to us should we put our hope in God softening toward sin.” Our current culture likes to flaunt sin and insist that it be celebrated. How sobering to be reminded that our sinful natures are not any different now than they were back in Isaiah’s time. I liked how the podcast emphasized that the book of Isaiah can be harsh and sobering, but it also has HOPE woven throughout. I was thinking about this as a parent. When my kids were young and I had to correct them, I could be pretty stern and strict. But they always knew that I loved them, so there was always the HOPE of redemption, of getting back on track, of debt wiped clean. How grateful that we have a Heavenly Father who is the same, yet so much more!

  72. Crystal Pitzer says:

    Amen

  73. Kelly (NEO) says:

God’s people were blind to their own sin and their sin as a group. When sin is “socialy” acceptable, it is especially hard to resist, or at the least be apathetic.
    .
Lord by Your Spirit may we have courage and resolve to go against the culture snd stand for righteousness.

Amen Kelly. What stands out to me this morning is Isaiah 5:20 and how our culture celebrates sinful behaviors. Grateful for the hope of Jesus.

  74. Diana Davis says:

    Gracious and righteous God,

You are holy and just, yet merciful and kind. Your Word warns us against the dangers of sin, pride, and injustice, just as You warned Your people long ago. We confess that we, too, have fallen short—we have sought our own ways instead of Yours, trusted in human strength instead of Your wisdom, and failed to bear the fruit of righteousness You desire. Forgive us, Lord.

In a world filled with corruption, raise up faithful leaders who seek justice and walk humbly with You. In our own hearts, shape us into people who love mercy, serve others, and reflect Your truth. When we see brokenness around us, give us courage to stand for what is right and the wisdom to act in love.

Thank You for the hope we have in Christ, the true Branch of the Lord, who cleanses and restores us. May we abide in Him, bearing good fruit that glorifies You. Strengthen us by Your Spirit, that we may live as Your redeemed people, shining Your light in a dark world.

    In Jesus’ name we pray,
    Amen.

  76. A Walton says:

Good morning! Hope you are doing well. I will ask you to pray for my daughter (2 years). She hit her head and was not acting right afterwards. Very tired and was saying her head hurt and her eyes. We went to the A&E. We sat for hours and once we saw the dr it was hard as she was scared and screaming. In any case, she did seem to perk up once we were there for a while, getting interested in the children’s toys. She was clingy for such a long time (not like her). Anyway, I am just nervous for her healing. Trying to put this into God’s hands. I am hoping we won’t see any other symptoms and have to go back in. Thanks for your prayers.

In other news, we got the contract for our house and made the deposit! It is becoming more real. Thank you for your prayers for this as well.
