Proverbs 31:10-31

The book of Proverbs is a guide for pursuing godly wisdom in our daily lives. In this four-week study, we will read a selection of topical proverbs covering different aspects of wisdom, from how to interact with our friends, families, and neighbors, to fearing God and keeping His commands. No matter the subject, these proverbs urge us to wrestle with and reflect on our own response to them. To help you better engage with the proverbs in this reading plan, we have provided you with a short introduction and reflection questions for each day.

Proverbs 31 is the most comprehensive description of a godly woman in Scripture. It is also an acrostic poem where each line begins with the next letter in the Hebrew alphabet. These qualities do not belong solely to women. This chapter gives us an ideal personification of virtue—a person “who fears the LORD” (Proverbs 31:30).

Reflection Questions:

This picture of a virtuous woman comes to us from an ancient context. What are some present-day comparisons you could make between the woman in this passage and a godly woman today?

What does this picture of a virtuous woman reveal about what it means to be a virtuous person—man or woman?

Who are godly women in your life? What have you learned from them about wisdom?

…she laughs at the time to come…. V25 To me this verse gets a new meaning in 2020, hard to keep open and trusting heart

I feel like you should set apart time away from the house on your sabbath day to go do something that aligns you back to God! It looks different for everyone, but you could spend a couple hours at a coffee shop with your bible, go on a walk/hike, drive around and listen to worship music, or even getting up a couple hours early and just sitting in that quiet before the house is up! that way, it also separates you from the “doer” mentality and all your distractions are not in your face.
I think the concept of finding an ENTIRE day of rest when you’re a mom of littles is always going to be defeating rather than uplifting bc it’s nearly impossible in this particular season. (I know all too well with my little one) Every time I’ve sat with older women and had these discussions, they’ve always come back with the answer of doing what you can in the season you’re in. And knowing every season will look different. I don’t think a couple hours a week is unreasonable, so you’ll just have to be intentional and ask your hubs or family to help more that day. ☺️

I grew up Jewish. I was taught this chapter was meant to uplift women and praise us not as a checklist of what we have to do but more said in awe of all we can accomplish.
When I hear women struggling with this verse I’m hurt because my connection to this is so positive. It’s read as a poem at Shabbat tables by husbands praising their wives. It was always a dream of mine to be the woman at her Shabbat table being praised by her husband by reciting this chapter
The word translated here as righteous woman is woman of Valor and the word typically referred to as righteous translate above as valor is actually typically used to describe warriors elsewhere in the Bible.

Doing – these are all actions that move the kingdom forward in ways that matter to the community of people around a person. It starts with God! Fear of the Lord sets in motion the ability to see needs and meet them.
