Wanted to share this cool analogy:
“My sheep hear My voice, and they follow me” John 10:27
Three times in this chapter Jesus speaks of the listening habit of sheep. In the NIV, this word is translated “listen”. In the east at the time when Jesus walked the earth, many different shepherds would often share the same fold. After these composite herds of sheep were gathered into these communal folds at night, it would seem to any other than the shepherds to be impossible to distinguish which sheep belonged to which shepherd. But in the morning when each shepherd called his own sheep, this was immediately evident, as each sheep would follow his own shepherd at the sound of his voice; yet they would simply ignore a strange voice.
The tense of the verb used here speaks of a habitual listening, that results from a constant training to catch the shepherd’s voice, until listening becomes unconscious and constant. This is how we should be listening to our own Good Shepherd. As believers, we should have trained ourselves by developing the habit, through practice, of being attentive to hear our Shepherd’s voice as He speaks through His Word, or by the voice of the Spirit deep within our being so that we are readily able to discern His voice instinctively.

Love this verse, it just reminded me (again!) that if I am following his commands, it shouldn’t be burdensome. And when things become a burden I have to recenter and make sure I’m following his commands and not my own.

His commands are not a burden because through the power of the Holy Spirit we are enabled to do them. Thanks be to God.
