Asking God for restoration in areas where I have been living in the “appearance of doing right” as Paul put it.

I’m struck by Paul’s heart for the Corinthians which is so bent on building them up by calling them to biblical repentance and turning to Christ in obedience. He makes it clear in this passage that though he is in conflict with them, his desire is not to win an argument or be seen favorably by them. His desire is for the power of Christ to be seen by them and that they may turn from their evil ways and love one another rightly.

SRT sisters please pray. My husband was just in a dirtbike accident and he had to be transferred to a bigger city hospital than my hometown. Stable for now and conscious but it’s so hard to see him all cut up and not fully alert. Please pray. Thank you. (His name is Matthew)

Thanks so much for your prayers! He is much more stable now. Had some serious internal bleeding in his liver but they fixed that and are waiting on a surgery time to fix his broken bones. He is joking around as well and being his normal self (as much as you can be when you are hooked up to pain meds and tons of other things!) thanks for the prayers!

My dad was in a 4-wheeling accident 11 years ago, the doctors said he would never walk again BUT GOD, the One who heals & restores, had a plan – & now my dad runs after his grandkids around the yard (& he still takes them out on quad rides!) I believe this and more will happen for your husband. Grace to you, sister, stay strong!

6:16 “As the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, and she despised him in her heart”. Michal saw him worshipping God and was disgusted. She thought it made him look foolish! I think I do this a lot. I look at people talking about and worshipping God and it disgusts me. :(

Leigh Ann, I took a class on 1&2 Samuel and actually had to write a paper on this very portion of scripture. At first I had the same reaction as you, but after doing tons of research, I began to understand. I will try to keep this 20 page paper to a min. In a historical context, Ahio and Uzzah were priests of the Levitical line. Because of this, they had been trained and taught the ways of priesthood since the time they were born and knew inside and out the rules and regulations of transporting the ark. They knew the ark is to never be touched. Also, it is absolutely clear, even by the design of the ark, that it is meant to be carried by four men with the poles on the ends. However, Ahio and Uzzah strayed from this and placed the ark on a new cart pulled by oxen, the method pagans, including the Philistines, used to transport the ark. Ahio and Uzzah knew exactly how they were supposed to be transporting the ark, but for whatever reason, they chose to ignore everything they had ever been taught to do from a young age. Knowing these details takes Uzzah out of such an innocent and helpless role. If Uzzah had obeyed God from the beginning, the ark would not have even been in a position to fall off the cart, he would never have been in the situation of choosing between catching it and letting it fall to the ground. Uzzah was showing irreverence to the God of Israel not only by simply trying to save the ark from hitting the ground, but from doing things his own way. He was set on doing things the fashion he thought was best, whether or not that honored God, even though he knew better.
On top of that, Ahio and Uzzah were representing the entire nation of Israel as they brought the ark to Jerusalem, they were leading the thirty-thousand men who were following them to irreverence. Looking at the passage in these terms brings forth the insight needed to see that God was just and right for punishing Uzzah for his actions.
More than just Uzzah’s offenses, this passage portrays a great deal about David and his intentions as king that can’t be understood without diving into the historical context of the passage. But that’s for another time.

Yes, that is a huge help in understanding. We can not worship God any way we feel like it. There must be reverence for God and His ways. It reminds me of Rom 10:2-3 “For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not in accordance with knowledge. For not knowing about God’s righteousness and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God.”
