The book of Proverbs is a guide for pursuing godly wisdom in our daily lives. In this four-week study, we will read a selection of topical proverbs covering different aspects of wisdom, from how to interact with our friends, families, and neighbors, to fearing God and keeping His commands. No matter the subject, these proverbs urge us to wrestle with and reflect on our own response to them. To help you better engage with the proverbs in this reading plan, we have provided you with a short introduction and reflection questions for each day.

One of the overarching themes of the Bible is the astonishing love of God toward rebellious and sinful people. This aspect of God’s nature plays out in every setting and circumstance, including in our broken world. To truly know God—and, therefore, to truly walk in wisdom—we must not only know what God loves, but also what He hates.

Reflection Questions:

Why do you think there are proverbs that talk about what God hates? Why is this important for us to know?

God hates sin but loves the people He has created. When you are sinned against or are a witness to sin, is hatred something that rises up in you? Why do you think that?

Read Proverbs 28:9. What does the first half of this verse have to do with the second?

  1. Tonya May says:

It is important for us to know what upsets God so we strive to do better and be closer with God.

  2. Hillary Carlson says:

    1) our spiritual walk on earth is like a road. When we drive there is a white line and a yellow line that keep us going in the right direction. Gods love and what brings Him joy, is like the white line. We need to know what God hates to provide us the yellow line. Without the yellow line we could lose our way and steer in a direction he has not designed us to go.

  3. Tonya Dehart says:

We are to know what God hates so we can know more of His expectations for us. I think it is depending on the sin that is done to me. In the verse, the first half has to do with the second because if you are not true in your heart when you pray then they are not asked with love and understanding of the law. That is like asking someone to help you when you are consistently a bad person to them and lack love for them.

  4. Harriet Code says:

God knows that we will fall short but he still loves us, he wants us to be honest in our walk with Him and continually strive to be less sinful. If we turn from listening to the law we are fooling ourselves and our prayers become insulting to God

  5. Harriet Code says:

God knows that we will fall short but he wants us to keep striving to be like Jesus, in that’s kournryvu

  6. Becca SoffosRogers says:

We need to have understanding of how God feels about our sin so we can be willing to repent when we fall short. Hatred definitely is something that rises up in me. It’s an emotion that is stemmed from hurt. It’s how we continue to use hatred that matters. Seeing our hatred towards Gods people is a call for us to see His understanding and to love other like the Lord. To forgive and to repent.

Turning from understanding the law due to hatred is sinful and the Lord calls us to follow the law.
