Acts 13:27–31

Scripture is God breathed and true. When we memorize it, we carry the good news of Jesus with us wherever we go.

As we look at the New Testament together, we’ll commit Acts 13:27–31 to memory. In the second half of this sermon

from Acts 13, Paul spoke about the role Israel played in Christ’s death, fulfilling Old Testament prophecies about a coming Savior. This passage reminds us that, as believers, we serve the risen Lord while bearing witness to the hope of the gospel.

This week, let’s begin our memorization with just the first verse of this passage. To help you visualize what’s being described in the text, write down the verse, then underline the subject of verse 27, circle who or what they didn’t recognize, and draw a square around what happened as a result.

27 Since the residents of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize him or the sayings of the prophets that are read every Sabbath, they have fulfilled their words by condemning him. 28 Though they found no grounds for the death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him killed. 29 When they had carried out all that had been written about him, they took him down from the tree and put him in a tomb. 30 But God raised him from the dead, 31 and he appeared for many days to those who came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are now his witnesses to the people.
—Acts 13:27–31

Lord, may the words I hear from Your Word every week not just go in one ear and out the other. May they bring transformation of my broken and rebellious ways.

May God’s Word stir your hearts today as you gather for worship with your church family today.

‘Because the residents of Jerusalem and their leaders did not recognise him or understand the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath, they fulfilled those words by condemning him’.
Missing the point on who Jesus is means missing the point on absolutely everything. It makes sense that they neither understood the words of the prophets nor recognised Jesus because John tells us that Jesus is the Word!
While I can rejoice that I know Jesus, this verse also terrifies me because I know so many people today (after the resurrection) who don’t understand the Word, and so don’t understand who Jesus is. A person I care about deeply looked at me recently and said (about the Bible) ‘you know these are just words to me’. But, strangely, he still found himself drawn to a verse from Romans(!), so I almost want to use this verse today to pray that he would understand the words as they meant to be understood, and ultimately recognise Jesus as his saviour. Oh Lord, all you ask of me is to be your witness – Father, please help me to be your witness. Remove anything in me that gets in the way of Jesus. Renew my mind so that it is fixed on my Hope! Amen
