Acts 13:17–21

Scripture is God breathed and true. When we memorize it, we carry His Word with us wherever we go.

This week, we will add verse 21. As you are making your morning coffee, driving to work, or eating lunch, practice saying this verse out loud with the verses you have already memorized until you can recite Acts 13:17–21. Don’t be discouraged if you can’t remember it all yet! Keep coming back throughout the week as you work on committing this passage to memory.

17 The God of this people Israel chose our ancestors, made the people prosper during their stay in the land of Egypt, and led them out of it with a mighty arm. 18 And for about forty years he put up with them in the wilderness; 19 and after destroying seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave them their land as an inheritance. 20 This all took about 450 years. After this, he gave them judges until Samuel the prophet. 21 Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. 22 After removing him, he raised up David as their king and testified about him, “I have found David the son of Jesse to be a man after my own heart, who will carry out all my will.” 23 From this man’s descendants, as he promised, God brought to Israel the Savior, Jesus.

Israel failed to recognize that they ALREADY HAD A KING- God Himself. How many times have I failed to recognize/acknowledge God’s skvereugn rule in my life in year’s past? I am thankful for the growth that came through His divine guidance and mercy. My relationship with Him now is the best it’s ever been – all thanks and glory to Him.

I found this article on Bible Hub. Too long to share it all, but here are excerpts:

“Why did God choose Saul as king in 1 Samuel 9:17 despite his later failures?

Historical Background: Israel’s Demand for a King

After generations of cyclical apostasy under the judges (Judges 21:25), the elders of Israel approached Samuel at Ramah: “Now appoint a king to judge us like all the other nations” (1 Samuel 8:5). Their request arose from social instability, Philistine pressure, and the corruption of Samuel’s sons (8:1–3). Yet God diagnoses a deeper issue: “
‘They have rejected Me as their king’ (8:7). The choice of Saul, therefore, unfolds within a tension between divine accommodation to human petition and Yahweh’s redemptive plan.

    Theological Implications for Salvation History
Saul’s kingship illustrates that human government, though instituted by God (Romans 13:1), cannot substitute for divine rule. It accelerates redemptive momentum toward the Davidic covenant (2 Samuel 7), which culminates in the messianic hope fulfilled in the resurrected Christ (Acts 13:22-23, 34). Thus even failure serves eschatological purpose.

    Application for Modern Believers
    1. Evaluate leadership by spiritual fidelity, not charisma.

    2. Recognize the peril of partial obedience.

    3. Trust God’s sovereignty over imperfect human choices.

    4. Allow Scripture’s examples to draw hearts to the Perfect King, Jesus, whose triumph over death guarantees our salvation (1 Corinthians 15:20-26).”

Praying for all! Today is tough for many! My daddy has been gone for 22 years and now I’m his age when He passed. But I can still see his smile, the jingle of change in his pocket that he always fiddled with when he was waiting. How he smelled like Cains Coffee because he roasted it for them all my life, going fishing with him, camping out with him, how he cooked on a campfire and made incredible meals on it!

Now I’m blessed either my husband, and 2 wonderful son-in-laws. Just thanking God for the blessings and praying for others who struggle today – good or bad memories. We have a Heavenly Father who watches over us.

What a beautiful tribute to your dad ❤️

      1. Rhonda J. says:

Yes, that was so nice! Our memories, so simple the things that remind us of them. My dad is still here although it amazes me with his health issues for over a decade!
So grateful like you said Cheryl that we ALL have a heavenly Father that cares for us and wants a relationship with us.

they asked for a king they got saul

    1. Searching says:

Because they didn’t realize or refused to accept they already had the King of Kings

    2. Rhonda J. says:

Saul obeyed until he got to proud and disobeyed by keeping the king for a reward rather than killing him. Half obedience is disobedience! Good wisdom for us to know..and adhere too!

Thinking of my fellow sisters who put on a brave face on Father’s Day! I was really struggling last night & wrote this. Hopefully it helps someone feel seen in their grief as well! |

I believe the most important prayers are the ones where we speak the least, when all I can do is cry out to God & sit there at His feet. How I pray Lord Jesus that you would intercede when my heart feels heavy & all I do is weep. You meet me in my grief and teach me to sew a harvest that in time I may reap. I know that joy comes in the morning. It is something I continually seek! Jesus, turn my tears into words when I can barely speak. Grief weighs heavy on my heart as I sit here at Your feet. I trust in You alone, O God to heal me as I grow. If You care for the lilies in the valley, how much more do you care for your sheep? May my tears be offerings of praise for all you have brought me through. What a blessing it is to have loved and lost so that You could carry me through!

  10. Rhonda J. says:

Powerful verses when you really think about all that is in them. And to think that David, a man after my own heart, even with the horrible sins he would commit, God still chose him and used him. He had some hard consequences for those transgressions, also affecting others.
The people leaving Egypt could have been to the promised land in a matter of weeks, yet they needed the long way!
Just like us, we need the long way. We need consequences. Still, we can have a heart for God, and we can carry out His will.
If I wrote out all the horrible sins of my 20’s and 30’s, and the consequences (that I am aware of, imagine the ripples I’m not) it would take up pages (um chapters! . But thank the Lord, He forgives, forgets, redeems, restores, remakes, transforms, and gives me opportunities to share.
We will always be stiff-necked and contrite like the Israelites, but thankfully he loves us like he loves them, and we have a hope and a future. He makes us strong and courageous. Let’s keep running the race steady with our eyes fixed on him.

  11. Kelly (NEO) says:

I often wondered what Saul’s father/family thought of him being made the king. First Samuel 9-10 doesn’t really give any info about their reaction.

Praying the Lord meets you as you gather to worship today.

    1. Cee Gee says:
