Hebrews 5:7-9

Scripture is God-breathed and true. When we memorize it, we carry the good news of Jesus with us wherever we go.

For this plan, we are memorizing Hebrews 5:7–9, a passage from this study that summarizes how Jesus is both the firm foundation of our faith and how we are to imitate Jesus’s faith in our own response to God. We’ll continue by memorizing the second half of verse 7.

7 During his earthly life, he offered prayers and appeals with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. 8 Although he was the Son, he learned obedience from what he suffered. 9 After he was perfected, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him…
—Hebrews 5:7–9

“With loud cries and tears” is the part that’s getting me today. How many times have I cried out to the Lord with tears streaming down my face? With my heart feeling like it’s in a million pieces. And my God puts it all back together every time. So thankful ❤️

  2. Michelle Smith says:

Even Jesus cried out to His father for strength and help and God heard Him. He knew in the toughness that he wasn’t alone and I am thankful he did what he did. I need to remember that God is with me and listening in every situation.

  3. Stephanie Bryant says:

I have a hard time praying for anyone through obedience with whatever I’m going through. I need to remember that no matter what my issue is God has already gone before and is always by my side regardless. Through my tears and suffering “pray for those who are coming after me so to speak.”

Thank you lord for everything you have done for us❤️

It is interesting that in our culture obidence is often seen as a way to avoid suffering, though Jesus learned obedience through what He suffered. I wonder how to use suffering to learn obedience? Any thoughts on how to do that, instead of seeing suffering as something we are the victims of?

    1. Laura says:

Wow, this is a really great point to ponder. I have learned over the years to lean into the suffering more, instead of doing everything I can to get out of it as quickly as possible. What I mean is this: I hate to suffer, who doesn’t? But instead of being angry that I am suffering, I have called out to God in my suffering and leaned on Him to get me through. Times of suffering have been the richest most rewarding times in my life (which sounds really strange) but I have felt to close to God in those moments when everything else is stripped away and I only have Him to hold onto. Now that you point this out, I think this has made me more obedient to God after the suffering is over too. I can remember that time when only God pulled me through. It makes me trust Him even more to see my sorrow, have a plan and to always be with me no matter what.

      1. Terri Stephens says:

Laura, I am in a season of life where I’m holding onto Jesus with everything in me. His love and comfort is so encompassing and real. I received a serious cancer diagnosis recently and will begin treatment soon, followed by additional surgery. I don’t know what the future holds, but I know who holds my future so have nothing to fear. Praise God!

Jesus suffered in His obedience to God

Sorry I’m not used to this platform yet. I responded and it posted above.

I needed to use Grace Day for Thursday and Friday, but I did a Grace Day today, instead of doing it yesterday. I am caught up on readings and comments. I was a woman in the word of God every day… just not here. I missed it so much! This week will be better! Missed you girls!

Do others see my obedience? Am I obedient? Not always. I have suffered so why have I not completely learned to obey. I am human. I am a sinner. BUT I am forgiven and have salvation. What an amazing gift! Thankful. So very thankful.

    Sweet Sunday, Shes
“9 After he was perfected, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him…”
    —Hebrews 5:9
Meditating on this verse, the thought came
to revise in relation to our own spiritual journey.
“Being bound in obedience, we become the reflection of His Light & Love in the world around us “.
    Have a wonderful day …
    wherever life takes you!

    Happy Sunday, She’s
I finally remembered to do Thursday’s devotion. It must’ve been difficult for Abraham to live away from everyone, not realizing that it wasn’t necessary. By faith we must preservire.

Ladies, I have time this morning for some long overdue slowness and I’m going back through the comments just the last couple of days! I’m so grateful for everyone who is sharing their insights. Please know as I come prayer requests I’m lifting them up.

Lanie H joining the other Shes and praying your little girl flips. Even if (Daniel 3:18) May you be given the wisdom needed to decide what to do.

Sunday! I love church day! I love to praise whether standing here in my living room in front of the TV last night listening to praise music on YouTube with my hands raised high OR in church with other beautiful loving Jesus people!! I sing in my car, loud and proud, and I sing in jail where it is a little more embarrassing that my not so lovely voice stands out…BUT God, He loves my praise and worship, my reverence to sing out my praises and adoration to him! I laugh when the ones at jail look at you like- what are these over-zealots doing?!

Anyways..gotta get ready—Love to you all! Go Praise and get him your faith and love to the One who holds it all in His hands!

    1. Cee Gee says:

Right there with you sister except for singing at jail. I sing or hum softly when I’m shopping, too, and especially when I am biting my tongue to avoid making a sassy retort about something lol
Enjoy this day of community praise to our God. ❤

    2. Mari V says:

Happy Sunday beautiful lady! I laugh a little as I too, sometimes sing wherever and sometimes I have a certain song I just listened to before work and sing it out-loud in front of the kiddos! They just look at me funny and “smile”

  16. Cee Gee says:

    Interesting…
I quoted Ephesians 6:10-17 in my previous comment and it is ‘awaiting moderation’ – Strange!
Much love and Sunday hugs, sisters! ❤

    1. Mari V says:

hmm…that is strange. Meanwhile we will put on our FULL ARMOUR! Love you Cee Gee!

      Ephesians 6:10-17
“10 A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. 12 For we[a] are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.

13 Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. 14 Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. 15 For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared.[b] 16 In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil.[c] 17 Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” NLT

    Just some thoughts…
When we say, “God heard our prayers,” we usually mean God did what we asked of Him.
    .
If we consider the recorded prayers of Jesus, especially in the Garden where He asked for the cup to pass, would we say “he was heard because of his reverence”? The only part of His prayer that God “answered” (God did what Jesus asked) was “Thy will be done.”
    .
LANIE H – continuing to pray for baby girl to flip and stay head down.
    .
CANDYCE ABBOTT – how did the interview go?
    .
    2 Thessalonians 2:16-17
“May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal encouragement and good hope by grace, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good work and word.”

    1. Cee Gee says:

Great reminder, Kelly, that we can be assured He hears our prayers, but the answer has to be His will-according to Hus plan Thanks! ❤ Prayers for your week ahead at work! ❤

    2. Searching says:

Good food for thought, KELLY ❤️, and a bit of an “ouch” when reading the start of your comment. How quickly we forget that an answer is just that, an answer … not necessarily a yes. Reminding myself of His wisdom, love and perfect plan for me.

    3. Heather O'Malley says:

Thank you for sharing, Kelly. It’s good to remind ourselves that God hears our prayers, whether or not they are “answered” how we want

    4. Tina says:

Kelly, I wonder, did Jesus know what was coming? Of course, He did! He was carrying the heavy burden of ‘our’ sins.. He was weighed down with the sins of the world… That is a heavy, heavy load.. He also knew the punishment for sin was death.. I think He knew what was coming, and prayed, even though He was the Son of God, because HE knew the pain to come, to save us! He sure did pray in rever-ence, as we would do, if we faced with something and knew that only God could save us! Jesus, also knew the price He was to pay for us, so He added ” not my will, but yours.. Again in reverence ..
Thank you Jesus, thank you for your redemptive love and gift of salvation..❤

  19. Tina says:

During his earthly life.. While here on earth, He, Jesus, offered prayers and appeals with loud cries and tears to the One that was able to save Him from death, and He was heard, because of His reverence, deep respect, holding in high esteem, great appreciation, admiration..
    .
I want to be like Jesus!
    .
I know I am nowhere near Jesus in character, but the bible says even a ‘mustard seed’ of faith, will get me somewhere.. So my ‘mustard seed’ character holds hope for me while here on earth.. So as my little prayers become big prayers and I grow in understanding of my Father God, to the point of reverence, deep respect, holding in high esteem, great appreciation and admiration of who He is, my prayers and appeals are heard.. Not because this is a formula, to anything, but because I am learning to be more like Jesus, as I grow in obedience through Him, My source of eternal salvation!
    .
    BUT GOD..
    .
    Happy Sunday!❤

    1. Kelly (NEO) says:

      Amen❤️
