Psalm 51:10

Text: Psalm 51:10

We believe memorizing scripture is one of the best ways to carry the Word of our God with us wherever we go—to have God-breathed truth, instruction and reproof in our hearts and minds as we live unto Him each day.

This week we’ve chosen a prayer to keep close this Lenten season.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.”
– Psalm 51:10, NASB

Write this verse down—copy it twenty time if that helps! Post it on your mirror or at your desk, in your car or on the fridge—anywhere you’ll see it often. Save the image below as your phone’s lock screen so you can read these words of truth throughout the day.

We want to be a community that is intentional about scripture memorization. Will you join us?

  1. JEAHuckaby says:

I think purity at heart & steadfastness in spirit not only is important so that you can hear God’s will for you clearly, but also so you can hear others in your life. When we hold onto residual emotions from yesterday’s or former situation, you cannot see things as they are. You cannot stand firm in the spot that God wants you to be in or be ready to open the doors in front of you or natigate your upcoming path.

  2. Hilary says:

Memorizing scripture has helped me several times when I was in a position of needing to help someone. This last week I was able to share truth of Hebrews 4:16 with those who needed it! God is who He says He is! If we boldly seek him, he will be there in our time of need! I needed to share that truth with someone, and it was was right there – fresh in my mind ready to help in my time of needing share His truth! Thank you!

  3. Julie says:

He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

  4. Steph says:

If my people would humble themselves and pray and seek my face then I would hear them and heal their land.

At Church yesterday we sang a song with the words from this Psalm. Over and over this year I will be reading a scripture in my daily devotions and then come across it again at Church or some other event in my life. I feel the Holy Spirit!

  6. Azucena Alvarado says:

Create a clean heart in me Oh God… A lil over a year ago I was reading Psalm 51 in my devo and I knew that this is what my passion was to everyday see Gods greatness and that He will everyday clean my heart!!

  7. In Christ I'm Found says:

The beginning of the 2nd section, Repent starts tomorrow and I feel like I’ve been repenting since day 1. I’m so thankful to be in the Word. I didn’t realize how much I’ve been missing out on in my Christian life. Lord, help me to always be in your word.

  8. Kristen Martin says:

Our choir has an anthem based on this Scripture and we sing it each year on Ash Wednesday as we begin our Lenten journey. So refreshing.

  9. Katy says:

This is the third time in one day God has brought up the word “pure”. I was feeling this week that I’ve failed in my words & actions in representing Christ. I have always struggled with this. My mom said she named me “katy” because it means “pure one”. Embracing the purifying & cleansing blood of Jesus who covers me every day & renews me from within.

I love the SheReadsTruth community so much and love the songs everyone has shared for this verse this morning. This has been one of my favorite Psalms for a long time, and there are two more songs I know of written from this Psalm that I LOVE: "Restore to Me" by Candi Pearson-Shelton and Mac Powell and "God Be Merciful to Me (Psalm 51)" by Jars of Clay. Also, for those reading the 365 plan right now too, a few verses later in this Psalm really speak to what we've been reading in Exodus about all of the sacrifices: "For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and contrite heart, O God, You will not despise. By Your favor do good to Zion; Build the walls of Jerusalem. Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices, In burnt offering and whole offering; Then young bulls will be offered on Your altar." (Psalm 51:16-19)

  12. Beverly says:

“David now saw, more than ever, what an unclean heart he had, and sadly laments it; but he sees it is not in his own power to amend it, and therefore begs God would create in him a clean heart.” (From Matthew Henry’s Commentary)
I love this language – ‘It is not in (our) own power to amend (our sin)’ Such hope and comfort to know that as much as I want to fix it – and believe me I do – I can not do it. Only God can take away the things that separate me from Him that are rooted in my heart. Only He can cleanse and renew me. Only He can give me a clean heart and faithful spirit. There is nothing that I can do but come to Him, come to the foot of the Cross and lay it all down.

  13. Restoreproject says:

I woke up from a dream where people were singing “shout to the Lord” -hillsong. Brought tears to my eyes to sing the whole song it’s such a powerful worship song! Praise God He is so unbelievably good ! He just wants us to believe that He is God !! Wow He is so great! Thank you Lord for your Mercy and Grace!! Create in my family Lord a clean heart, especially my youngest brother Michael, Lord ! In Christ Jesus I pray, Amen.

    1. Annie says:

I read your comment this morning and was inspired to listen to shout to the lord. Then we get to church and guess which song we sang for worship? Yep, shout to the lord. Then the sermon was all about how God uses “coincidences” to orchestrate His plan.

  15. KatSmith1026 says:

love this verse! it’s a major prayer of mine. please pray for me and my mom while we’re on a trip and having a really hard time getting along. I say hurtful things and she turns around and says them right back to me. I’m asking God to renew a right spirit in me, so that I wouldnt want to be right all the time, but that I’d be humble and lower myself in the situation. thank you for prayers, friends ❤️

    1. Beth Warner says:

Lord please create a pure heart in Anna. Help her to see her Mama through Your Eyes, even when she says hurtful things. Holy Spirit give her peace throughout their trip, take away the feeling of “I need to be right”. Let her Mom see you through her. In your name Jesus. Amen. Xo

  21. Sonja Cox says:

Love the definition of steadfast! Thx for posting!!

  22. Laresa says:

I had this verse memorized using "right" rather than "steadfast," but I love the definition of "steadfast":
    adjective
1.fixed in direction; steadily directed:a steadfast gaze.
2.firm in purpose, resolution, faith, attachment, etc., as a person:a steadfast friend.
3.unwavering, as resolution, faith, adherence, etc.
4.firmly established, as an institution or a state of affairs.
5.firmly fixed in place or position.

Oh, that my spirit would be steadily directed by you, Lord. Make my heart and mind firm in your purpose, unwavering, and fixed in place. Amen.

    1. Kasey Tuggle says:

Ahhhh love that! That’s what we need!

Love that this says renew a steadfast spirit. We already have had it in our souls once because of Jesus being in us. So comforting to know that it is not us that has to be steadfast and pure, but rather Jesus will make us that way.

    1. Kasey Tuggle says:

      YES! That is so comforting!!

  29. Nataly says:

This passage helps me so much right now that I want to become a new soul, a soul that will reflect God's love in other people lives, I want to be a mirror where people can see peace, happiness and God's Joy!! Thank you for this type of motivation, I think this page will help me becoming a new creature in Gods eyes so easy, knowing I have the support from She Reads Truth!!

  30. Molly says:

    I love this passage found a little bit later in Psalm 51: “You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;
you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
     My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit;
        a broken and contrite heart
        you, God, will not despise.”

The only thing that I have to offer is my heart. Lord, please make it clean!

    1. MNmomma (heather) says:
