Joel 2:13

Memorizing Scripture is one of the best ways to carry God-breathed truth, instruction, and reproof wherever we go.

As we walk through these Minor Prophets together, we will memorize key verses from our reading. The key verse for the book of Joel calls us to true repentance.

Tear your hearts,
not just your clothes,
and return to the Lord your God.
For he is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger, abounding in faithful love,
and he relents from sending disaster.
—Joel 2:13

Write this passage down and post it on your mirror or at your desk, in your car or on the fridge—anywhere you’ll see it often. Save the image below as your phone’s lock screen so you can read these words of truth throughout the day.

We want to be a community that is intentional about Scripture memorization. Will you join us?

A holy God pursuing a relationship with me, a sinner. I stand with Psalm 51:10 “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”

God’s Word, while it may convict us, is never meant to condemn us or hold us in a cycle of constant repentance. Mosaic Law – sacrifices, the rending of garments, fasting, etc. – were meant to be outward symbols of what was happening within a person in their relationship with God. Today, Christians are forgiven and may live in a state of constant grace. Christ’s work on the cross means that we never have to live in a state of guilt or shame.

Repentance. That word alone brings fear and anxiety. What do I need to do, where have I messed up what do I need to repent of. In the Bible we read how people were to tear their clothes, heap ashes on their head and walk around in mourning for repentance. But here in this verse we learn that it’s our hearts that are so much more in need of change not just an outward appearance of repentance. I’m reading Ann Voscamps book The Broken Way. One chapter she talks about how we should live in repentance every day. How she spent hours one day writing out everything she could think of in repentance. At first I was overwhelmed by that, but as I reflect on that and now reading this verse- that’s how we draw close to God. He IS gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in faithful love, and he relents from sending disaster. True repentance is not just giving up something or changing behaviors it’s all in the heart. Change my heart Oh God make it ever true, change my heart Oh God let me like you.

His love is everlasting. Repentance is beautiful because it brings us closer to the Lord. He reveals Himself to the broken and contrite heart. It renews our purpose to be His in this confusing and distracting world. I pray the Lord reveals Himself to you and His Holiness that gives one a hunger for the eternal and step away from what’s destructive. I need Jesus every day and I’m so prone to wander and complain apart from His grace.

    Good morning everyone!
As I read this scripture and think about my week, I can’t help but take it personally. As someone who struggles with anxiety, I tear myself apart over the smallest things- an argument with my husband, an interaction with a stranger on social media, how I responded to my daughter in anger..
What this verse has me reflecting on is to not just tear myself apart (my clothes) but to embrace those feelings and let my heart be torn before God. I think back on Psalm 51:17: “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.”
When I turn to the Lord with a torn and repenting heart, he will be faithful and just to forgive and restore.
    Be blessed today, y’all! X

Hey team! My name is Bree and I have been coming on this page for a bit now. I really enjoy the daily scripture and devotional time. I love that we are in the minor prophets, I have so much to learn there! I mostly just wanted to see if there is anyone else who comes here regularly? I wanted to say “hey! we are doing this together and that is great!” in case there is someone… you know, SOLIDARITY! And introductions are great

    2. EarlyBird says:

Hi Bree! I’ve been off and on with this site for only a year. Off due to painful ‘life circumstances’, back on full time again since September because those circumstances have changed, and I’m now in the healing process. I love these studies and the comments that I read each morning, many from the same people. What blesses my heart is knowing that ladies from all over the world, not just the US, are reading God’s Word and these daily lessons right along with the rest of us. Stay with it. And welcome, from Cleveland, Ohio!

      1. Bree says:

Good morning again :) I think it is so cool to know that as well. I pray beauty and health in your life, whatever your difficult circumstance is. I am glad we all get to do this study together

In light of this verse, it’s time for some serious self reflection. Am I becoming more like Christ or not really?
