Trust for Such a Time As This

Esther 4:4-17, Esther 7:1-10, Esther 8:1-8, Psalms 33:20-22, Isaiah 26:3-4

Esther’s bravery was a provision of God’s gracious and eternal plan. Yes, Esther had the privilege of being part of the story of Israel’s rescue, but I doubt she wanted to be anywhere near the king’s harem—she probably would have preferred to stay safely at home. But when calamity threatened, her cousin Mordecai prefaced his exhortation to Esther with this profound observation: “If you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance will come to the Jewish people from another place” (Esther 4:14).

Mordecai understood that the real story doesn’t depend on us, but upon God, who always accomplishes His will. Only in light of this truth can we understand what it means to live rightly in the time and place God has put us. Mordecai’s words to Esther provide three profound implications:

First, it conveys an unwavering trust in God’s providence. To Mordecai, there was no doubt about Who was ultimately in charge of Israel’s security and hope. It wasn’t Esther, nor was it Mordecai himself. It was not man or the strength of men. He knew that God is faithful, that He keeps His covenant, that He alone is the preserver of His people—God alone can save.

Second, it is a reminder that God calls us to humility. When we find ourselves in a position either of pressure or of prominence, both are God’s doing, and both are for the glory of His kingdom. Mordecai mourned and repented in the public square, openly confessing His dependence on God. His call to Esther was to do the same with her position of privilege: not to use it for her own preservation or security or comfort, but to lay it at the feet of God, to yield it up to the purposes of His kingdom. And so when the king invited her to request whatever she wanted, “even to half of the kingdom,” in that moment Esther knew how to respond: “If I have found favor with you, Your Majesty, and if the king is pleased, spare my life; this is my request. And spare my people; this is my desire” (Esther 7:2–3).

Third, it frames a biblical perspective of time and history. The phrase “for such a time as this” brings to mind all of the moments when God’s unseen hand is at work in the Esther narrative. The primary action of the story is not dependent upon what people decide to do, but on what “happens,” or rather, what Providence decrees. The story moves on a series of passive verbs, indicating a divine will that guides all things. “For such a time as this” is a reminder that both the evil of the day and the opportunity to stand for justice were provisions of God’s hand. God is at work, and He works all things—even the evil that men do—for the glory of His kingdom and the good of His people (Romans 8:28).

This hope is ultimately fulfilled in Christ. The true rescue of captive Israel is foreshadowed in Esther, but accomplished in the work of Jesus’s sacrifice, who is the true Savior of Israel. He stood before the rulers and judges of the world and obeyed even to the point of death on the cross (Philippians 2:8). He took upon Himself the gallows’ punishment so that we might be redeemed. He fought the battle for us in order to give His victory to us. His eternal decree has overturned the decrees of kings and rulers, of powers and principalities, and He has established a kingdom that endures and confounds the powers of this world.

This is not a story about the bravery of Esther or the wisdom of Mordecai. It is a story about the sovereign providence of God, who is present in every time and circumstance. We are all born for such a time as this, and we can depend on the Lord to fulfill His promises both now and forever (Isaiah 26:4).

I often read this and only see how strong and dependent Esther was, and miss out on Mordecai’s wisdom and trust in God. But as stated, it’s not about them, it’s about God’s plan to save Jews from evil, and His power to do so by using Esther and Mordecai. But His plan still would have been fulfilled with or without them. This was a good reminder to me that we get to be used by God, but that He ultimately has the power.

The real story of my life and the lives of people around me doesn’t depend on me, it depends on God. God’s will is accomplished always, the earth began and God’s will was already accomplished, eternity in a new heaven and earth are accomplished.
I can trust in the Lord’s providence in my life. The more I trust in his providence and more deeply I understand that I am a part of his will, the more deeply the sacrifice of Jesus and the truth of God will transform me and my life. I want to humbly lay my privilege and position at the feet of God and for his purposes.
There is a third way between things happening and me doing them. The way of Providence. Thank you God for each of the opportunities to stand for You and for justice. I hope that I can grow more prepared for each one through meditation on your truth.

  135. Sarah Luehof says:

I’ve never seen this story through the lens of trusting God and his ultimate plan. Usually, the messages I’ve heard/remember focus on Esther’s individual bravery and the call for applying that courage to our own lives. I love that this passage is, in fact, anchored in the grander arc of God’s rescue story for this people, one of trust and love, as fulfilled in Jesus.

  136. Anneliese Peterson says:

Powerful. We are in a place where we have a lot of decisions to make and they will all require trusting in God. I was just talking to a friend about this passage and the for such a time as this. 153. Amy Uehara says:

I have a BIG test tomorrow

  154. Victoria Baxter says:

Though I’ve heard this story countless times, this time the idea of privilege really stuck out to me. As in the commentary, Esther didn’t use her God-given privilege for her own comfort, security, or preservation, but rather used it for the purposes of the kingdom. Whoa, amen.

  155. Barbara D says:

My daughter is a nurse and works as a “share the care” nurse at a large hospital. She works where she is needed most and many days she has been needed on the “Covid” floor. She has wonderful stories and heart breaking stories of things she sees everyday. But above all she knows that she is called for “such a time as this.” I applaud all the current nurses and “someday” nurses. Study hard and work hard and remember to trust God as you humbly serve him.

  158. Lara-Ann Van Rooyen says:

This devotion really convicted me today- of the call to humility. God called Esther to use her privileged position to stand for justice and glorify Him in obedience and humility. Right now, with racial injustice everywhere, I feel called to use my privelage to stand for justice and honor the Lord with humility. How wonderful that God is at work through all circumstances and I can be a part of that through humble laying down of my own privilege and choosing to obey His Word.

  159. Annie H says:

    Praying, Allie!
My husband is a physician and was there once. We understand every step of the path. ♥️

  160. Natalie J says:

Whitney I completely understand where your heart is at as I am going through the same experience. I was looking through my SRT notes from a previous study on Esther a few years ago and I had written that when our hearts cry out for justice or good, we are actually crying out for heaven. We grieve the world’s injustice. The fact that God is not mentioned once in Esther but His hand is quite clearly guiding throughout is so encouraging to me when I struggle with understanding my family’s view of world injustices or when I struggle with things that have happened in my life. Esther patiently waited, sought wise counsel and trusted in the process.

  161. Allie M says:

i am currently a pre-med student entering my final year of college and this summer i’m taking the MCAT. everyday is a constant battle between my mental health (anxiety, depression, etc) and my desire to focus and concentrate on all the material i have to learn. i believe that God called me to pursue this service-driven career to be as Esther and be placed in a “position such as this.” As a proud, Hispanic woman, my goal is to help minorities that have been institutionally discriminated against in the healthcare system. i’m so anxious to take this test as i know it can make or break my medical school acceptance. if you could include me in your thoughts and prayers it would mean the absolute world to me!

    1. Catie MarieMartin says:

Good luck studying, Allie! My brother is also studying for the MCAT this summer, and I know it is an anxious and stressful time. Your dedication to your studies is inspiring. Know that you have been prayed for tonight!

    2. Christi Littlejohn says:

Yes! Prayers for peace and for focus on the material
At hand….and a clear mind. My son graduated from
Med school in May and started his residency just this week so I feel your “anxiety”. You will so great ! Continued prayers for you!

    3. Abigail Calkins says:

Hey Allie! You can do it!! I’m in my fourth year of medical school and it has been an incredible journey of God’s faithfulness! Looking back on the MCAT and boards it seemed so impossible and my mentally health was not in the best spot but God carried me through. Yesterday I saw a patient with a palliative care team and the patient said they are not afraid to die because they know where they are going. All the blood sweat and tears of medical school are so worth the precious moments you will have with your patients and all the stress of the mcat and boards with be behind you. ❤️

We all need this right now. God will provide for us throughout these hard times when we don’t know what the future will bring. Is that cough innocent or deathly? Is that door handle sanitary? Is the world gonna end? God will provide for us. Even through the hardest of times, God will help us. Even if you don’t feel or see him, he is always with us. He will guide us through all the tough times in our life. For heaven’s sake, he DIED for us!!!!! God will never stop loving and providing. God loves you.

    1. Rashell Stone says:

Your words gave me peace . Thank you for sharing your thoughts :)

  163. Allison Gudeman says:

God calls us to humility. We need to use our position to help. We need to use this opportunity to stand for justice.

    1. Wylie Donald says:

      I love that!

  164. Rebekah Storey says:

    Sovereign providence! Amen!

  165. Neyda Morales says:

Yes yes for such a time as this!

  166. Emily Lindbloom says:

Lord come with your abounding love and faithfulness. Remind us you do not hide yourself but you reveal yourself, you are present in every circumstance, event, etc. You are here and you hear our cries for justice. You feel the immensity of our pain. You see the oppressed and do not look away. Renew us Father, renew us and remind us of who you are and who we are in you. Give us the courage to say “yes Lord, your will be done”, even when we are scared out of our minds. Soften all of the hard hearts. Make us come alive anew, use us as your vessels of peacemaking and self-giving love. Change us and let us see- our wayward hearts cry out!!! Drop these scales, spit in our eyes!! Wake us up Lord, wake us up!!

  167. Olivia Ramirez says:

    I love this reading!

  168. Whitnee Bomkamp says:

“We are all born for such a time as this, and we can depend on the Lord to fulfill His promises both now and forever.” This is so powerful. In today’s times, I have been striving to stand up for injustice by educating my family with love. I have tried to use God’s word to show them that we are meant to use our position of privilege to stand for what is right and to amplify those voices who are not quite as loud as ours, as they are generally dismissed. This lesson was exactly what I needed to restore my faith this week, as this morning, I was in tears over their refusal to understand and wondering why I was even trying anymore. This reaffirmed my belief and I am thankful to have read it.

  169. Irina says:

Amen, Taylor! Your words echoing my thoughts!

  170. Jay Barr says:

Crazy how easily we can turn this into today!!

  171. Laurel says:

Amen, Lord. Help me to keep the faith, be humble and be prepared for our times, such a time as this. I need your help, Lord.

  172. Nhu Pham says:

Thank you for this devotion. The part that really jumped out to me was when Esther said “though it is against the law, I will go into see the King, If I must die, I must die”, and this brings to my memory what Jesus says “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it” (Matthew 16:25), Esther was willing to lose her life and found it. The Bible compliments itself in old and new testaments. And another part which shows the authority of the words coming from the king (human king in this sense) that what is written by the King (in the King’s name and and sealed with his ring) can NEVER be revoked. And our Lord Jesus Christ is King of all Kings, so how much more that anything is written in Jesus’ name, all that were promised in this all powerful King of all Kings’ name, onto us, will also NEVER be revoked. This just brings so much excitement and assurance for me. Hallelujah. Praise the Lord for He is a good King.

  173. Nicole Green says:

I love this story of Esther! Although, I am not considered in any sort of position of privilege as the world sees. But I am a daughter of the Most High God! And so, I can identify with this story as my position in Christ. As the people and daughters of God, we are born as such a time as this! Amen.

  174. Jennifer Anapol says:

God has ordained when each individual would walk on this planet. I believe we all have our “for such a time as this” moment. I pray we would accomplish the Lord’s will in that moment.

  175. Melissa Mcronney says:

    Amen…powerful

  176. DOROTHY says:

Kerag, your words say so much.
Pat, I have read many of Corrie ten Booms’ books and what she lived through and later talked about is amazing. We can all learn from her and her life.
Amen. Churchmouse, Angela Sutherland, Becky Kuiper, Mari V., Natalie McMahon, Angie, Maura, Elisha Anne, Diana Fleenor, Jennifer Lee, Lindsay C., amen.
Wow, Lizzie you took my breath away. I love what you said.
Taylor, your words on both of your posts are aw inspiring and really make me think.

  177. Lindsay C. says:

At first I noticed the contrast between Haman and Esther. She led with humility, while he was very prideful. I thought of Proverbs 16:18 as he was hanged on the galllows he himself had built. Pride comes before the fall. The more I thought about it, I was able to see that the king here represents Jesus and Esther represents His Bride. As it says in Psalms 33:20-22, He will help us. We can come to Him when we find ourselves in an impossible situation and He is faithful to stand with us through it. Esther 7:2 reminded me of John 14:13-14. Whatever Esther asked was given to her…whatever we ask in Jesus’ name will be given to us. Just as the king sealed the document with his signet ring, never to be revoked, the promises of God will never be revoked. Praise God, He is faithful.

    1. Margaret Terry says:

Wow! What a wonderful commentary, thank you for your well thought out and expressed comment!!

  178. Jessica Brayboy says:

For such a time as this!!!!!!! YOUR WILL be DONE LORD!!!!!

  179. DOROTHY says:

Esther is one of my favorite stories in the Bible because she dared to do something that was unheard of in her time. She stood up for what was right. In her time, a woman speaking up for anything let alone what was right was unheard of. Yes, Mordecia had to encourage her but she could have said no or just ignored him but she didn’t. Esther also shows how family sticks together. I, thank God all the time for a loving family like that. My parents brought my siblings and I up to be there for each other. In my almost 40 years of nursing, I have seen too many times when there has been discord in families over small things. If you have a family like that sister I pray that you can mend things. Lord, thank you for a loving family that is there for each other when we need one another. Thank you for parents that taught us the value of loving and caring for each other and those around us. Thank you for other family members that have the same values. In Jesus name, amen.

  180. Jennifer Lee says:

This reading couldn’t have came at a better time. The world is full of chaos at the moment but the reading opens our eyes and and reminds us that we CAN lay out everything at the foot of the cross. He is there for every single one of us.
Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal. -Isaiah 26:4
Remember my friends we CAN ALWAYS depend on the Lord.
    God bless to all. <3

  181. Diana Fleenor says:

“Position of privilege”. This is something I’ve been asking the Lord about for some time, for a number of reasons. Being a white person is considered a place of privilege according to today’s narratives. And in general I see truth in that. However, as a woman with a disability which keeps me homebound, I also experienced how being in this position is a kind of under-privilege. Yet, I don’t want to miss opportunities to use whatever voice, however limited my privilege may be, in order to speak truth in love into hard spaces, into injustice, into suffering.

I love how the devotion reminds that ultimately every stand we take, every service we do, every word we speak will depend on our Lord who abides in us. We can do nothing on our own. Oh how evident that is to me in my weakness! Therefore, I depend upon the sufficient grace of God as I aim to please him today through every thing I think, say and do even as my energy is low and pain is high. I will boast in these weaknesses all the more gladly so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Let Him who chooses the weak things of this world to confound the strong, be exalted and honored forever more! Amen.

    1. Annie Bartley says:

      Beautiful words, Diana.

  182. Elisha Anne says:

What faith, Mordeci had! He said if Esther did not speak up, deliverance would come from elsewhere. He knew God would deliver His people, and if she wasn’t willing, it would happen through someone else. I pray we have this faith, to speak up for the Lord. For if we don’t He will choose someone who will. ♥️ Amen. We have His Holy Spirit not of fear but of love and a sound mind. Nothing is impossible with God. May we be a light in this ever darkening world!

  183. Maura says:

“This is not a story about the bravery of Esther or the wisdom of Mordecai. It is a story about the sovereign providence of God who is present in every time and circumstance.” Love this. Lord help us not to forget that this story too, this time for us is about you and help us to be about you in all we do. Please use me, us to bring your love, grace, peace and joy in this time and to those you place in our path. Praise the name above all names Jesus be near.

  184. Angie says:

Esther was an orphan, who became queen. When she tells the king that if her people were only to be made slaves, it would not have been worth bothering him, I see such reverence, respect, and humility.

My Lord, sometimes in scripture You refer to us as heirs, for we have been adopted into the family of God. As your church we are also, the bride of Christ. The best person could not earn these blessed placements. They are gifts of love and relationship made possible by Your power alone. They lift us, draw us, and make us new. And while the intimacy of Your love surrounds and comforts, I pray these gifts find their foundation in the reverence and respect You deserve. I wait and I trust for You are faithful. You are my shield. You are hope. Peace comes from You. I worship and praise You, my King, my Father, my God.

  185. Jessie Chatigny says:

First, what a perfect story for the work that is ahead of each of us “for such a time” as 2020. Second, thanks for acknowledging the discomfort of this story being born in a harem. Lastly, this is the first

  186. Alexis says:

We are all born for such a time as this, and we can depend on the Lord to fulfill His promises both now and forever (Isaiah 26:4)- Love this!

  187. Mary K says:

Angela, will definitely be praying for you and your husband and for the decision you have to make, whatever it may be.

Natalie, LOVE that. It is such a great reminder and it is something I needed this morning. :)

  188. Taylor says:

Sorry for all the comments but I thought of something. Let’s not forget we have DIRECT ACCESS to God through the Holy Spirit! Because of Jesus’ work on the cross, we are connected to the God of the Universe! Our spirit is one with His Spirit. When we experience the trials and struggles of this life, just look within yourself (and sometimes/a lot of times God works through others as well) to find the fullness of Christ within you! God’s purpose of giving us His Spirit is to manifest His love, peace, joy, faithfulness, etc. to the world! Don’t forget we have an Advocate who is intertwined with our Spirit. Whatever our “for such a time as this” moment is – hold onto the TRUTH that we are never alone and that God is living IN us and THROUGH us!

  189. Natalie McMahon says:

This is a humbling and encouraging reminder that God does not NEED us to accomplish His purposes, but He invites us to be part of the story. He uses us because it pleases Him and if honors ya to be used by God, but we are not necessary. I pray God opens my eyes to the unique positions of power or privilege that I have been placed in and may use to join in His purposes.

    1. Elizabeth Carlock says:

I really liked how you said this I pray to say yes to the invitation.

  190. Sarah Minton says:

This devotional reminds me to use the opportunities god gives me to love other people and lead them to him!

  191. Taylor says:

Praying for you and your court date tomorrow Mari V <3

  192. Taylor says:

Yet another reminder to live open-handed in light of God’s will for my life. Lord I lay my plans for my life at the foot of your cross. I surrender. I trust You. I want to obey Your will in my life. I give up control to You. Thank you that you are always working – that the battle is already won. Thank you for inviting us to be a part of your redemptive work here on this earth. May we live out our callings well. Amen!

    1. Jennifer Martin says:

      ♥️

  193. Mari V says:

I don’t want to be in any other place but here, “for such a time as this”. My Lord Jesus has brought me this far and I know He goes with me giving me, strengthening me to keep moving forward even when it’s scary as Esther must of been approaching the king. Sisters, we are privileged that we can come before our KING with our heads up in confidence knowing that He listens with compassion and love.

  194. Lizzie says:

These verses from Isaiah 26:3-4 and Psalm 33 and Romans 8:28 have been a repeated theme in my life lately! Thankful that He is our peace, our hope, and He is good! Everything looks so big from my angle, but He is sovereign, and my life is in His hands. This story from Esther is a great reminder of that! Esther 4:14. 1 Corinthians 1:7-9, 27-31 talk about who He is and what He does, verses 30-31 say, “It is from him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became wisdom from God for us—our righteousness, sanctification, and redemption— in order that, as it is written: Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” Somehow, He wants us, He wants me. So He showed His great love, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Now we are saints, washed by His precious blood! Praise the Lord for His steadfast love endures forever! He redeemed our souls in safety from the battle we wage, we are weak, but He is strong! He is sovereign. He is here. Praise the Lord, for this unfathomable truth. We are filled with His Spirit! God, I won’t always understand, but you are faithful. I love you Lord.

  195. Becky Kuiper says:

If we stay silent, deliverance will come from another place. But God is INVITING us to be part of his redemptive story. We get to join him. Thank you Lord for including us, inviting us. Help us to be quiet enough to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit leading us to the next right thing for today.

  196. Angela Sutherland says:

I’ve been praying about a decision my husband and I need to make, and before I opened my Bible to today’s readings, I felt weighted down with it. I asked the Lord to show me that He’s here in this with us, as sometimes if feels like I need more than just the knowledge that He’s with me…and reading today’s passages I began to realize God was showing me clearly that He is there, even when there’s no clear sighting of Him. He is all over the book of Esther and His name is never mentioned. I am reminded to see what is around me and take inventory of His provision. That is my “proof” that He is here with me. I know this is a different take away from what the devotional focuses on, but it’s what I needed this morning. I have felt since the start of the new year that 2020 was going to be a “such a time as this” kind of year, and boy, has it! I want to be an Esther in a world of Hamans! And even when it’s not “obvious”, I want to trust in God’s presence and provision to stand in the gap!

  197. Diana DiazRodriguez says:

For Such A a Time As This!

  198. Larissa Mowry says:

Loved this! Esther is my favorite Bible story. This applies to exactly what is going on in our world also.

  199. pat says:

I am reading a book about Corrie ten Boom. She was a Holocaust survivor who “tramped” the world for Jesus. She always knew the Lord would provide for her work and He did – sometimes at the last minute! She had a faith and trust that was (and is to me) infectious. Lord I pray for such faith as Corrie. God always provides when our focus is on Him!

  200. Kristen says:

I heard a missionary talk about theze Scriptures: “From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’”
    ‭‭Acts‬ ‭17:26-28‬ ‭NIV‬‬

How awesome, caring, and loving He is. Nothing is by accident. We are born at the exact time and place to give us the most opportune time to seek Him. His will is for all to be saved, I found this quick writing about this too!

  201. Marya MesaVA says:

What a timely passage..for such a time as this.

  202. KeraG says:

Humility is powerful in our quest to purpose. Laying bare at the feet of God is the ultimate process in living out our purpose in Christ. I pray to know Him and radiate in His call on my life, trusting Him all the way. God will use those who step out with little faith for such a time as this.

  203. Samantha Hughart says:

We are end days people, we were literally created for such a time as this. We have the responsibility to our Savior to fulfill His plan!

  204. Linda J says:

Both the evil of the day and the opportunity to stand for justice are the provisions of God’s hand. For such a time as this…

  205. Katelynn Barlowe says:

We are all born for such a time as this. We are called to lay our privilege at the feet of God, to yield it up to the purposes of His Kingdom. Let it go.

I’m asking God today what this looks like. Praying for vision.

  206. Kristi says:

More often than not I’ve skipped past the first part of verse 14 in chapter 4 to focus on the latter half, but this time around the beginning spoke loud and clear. If I keep silent…
I believe that God has put us here for such a time as this…How will we respond?
Thank you for the many Mordecais calling out to us and reminding us that they need us to stand with them.

  207. Shannon Lowry says:

This is beautiful and relevant always. I love the way this applies as well to helping our BIPOC brothers and sisters in being raised up after so much pain and strife.
