‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus

Isaiah 12:1-6, Galatians 2:19-20, Hebrews 2:10-13

Text: Isaiah 12:1-6, Galatians 2:19-20, Hebrews 2:10-13

Sitting in the sand on a seaside holiday, Louisa Stead and her husband watched as their four-year-old daughter played in the sunshine. From out in the dark waves they heard cries for help from a boy struggling to stay afloat. Her husband ran into the water to rescue him. But despite his efforts to bring the boy back to shore, both he and the child drowned.

Shocked, grieving, and penniless, Louisa and her daughter struggled in the years that followed. The tragedy of her husband’s death weighed heavily on her, both as a mourning wife and as the unexpected head of household. She didn’t have money for food, and their hungry days passed slowly, sustained by a quiet faith in God’s goodness in spite of their dire circumstances.

On a day that began like any other, Louisa heard a sound at the door. Upon opening it, she found a solitary parcel on her front doorstep. Not seeing anyone around, she looked inside and discovered a small gift of food and money (McKay 89). That same day she penned the words, “‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, just to take Him at His word.”

Louisa’s life gives a powerful testament of simple yet mighty faith in Jesus. Her story reminds us that, even in the scary and sad places, God is surely our salvation. We can “trust and not be afraid” (Isaiah 12:2). Let us take Jesus at His word and believe that He will care for us.

‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus
Louisa Stead

‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,
and to take him at his word;
just to rest upon his promise,
and to know, “Thus saith the Lord.”

Refrain:

Jesus, Jesus, how I trust him!
How I’ve proved him o’er and o’er!

Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
O for grace to trust him more!

O how sweet to trust in Jesus,
just to trust his cleansing blood;
and in simple faith to plunge me
neath the healing, cleansing flood! [Refrain]

Yes, ’tis sweet to trust in Jesus,
just from sin and self to cease;
just from Jesus simply taking
life and rest, and joy and peace. [Refrain]

  6. Donna Wolcott says:

Happy Birthday Lynn! Well I’m 5 for 5 and it was nice to goggle and listen to each one sung by different people. Cee Gee, thanks for “the rest of the story”. Praying as I read and lifting those also held on hearts. Have a wonderful weekend sisters.

  7. Cindy Hanna says:

Good morning and Happy Friday Fellow She’s. Happy birthday @Lynn from Alabama. Praying you feel the love of your SRT sisters covering and celebrating you today.

With the exception of yesterdays song, I’ve known all the songs this week. It’s been like visiting familiar friends I had lost touch with. I did not however know any of their backstories. Thank you @ Cee Gee for the additional content on todays song.

@ Kristine Loughman. So sorry for Violet. Praying her health and strength will return soon. I can only imagine her disappointment at missing this big event. Our granddaughter River will be participating in a big cross country track event on September 30th hosted by Nike. She too is excited to participate with her team against schools from all over the Pacific Northwest.
    Have a great weekend everyone!

  8. Cheryl Blow says:

I love this hymn! What a beautiful reminder of how walking in faith is truly like. It can be tough sometimes but what joy comes when a need is met! God loves us so much and He keeps His promises. He is faithful!

  9. Michelle Patire says:

Happy birthday @Lynne from Alabama!!!! I hope it is a blessed one :)

@Kristine L- praying peace over Violet and her knowing that God upholds her team, not anyone else. May she rest and feel better.

@Cee Gee- loved the background for this hymn. Beautiful!! Glad to know God kept writing a beautiful story through this painful loss.

  10. Cee Gee says:

    From WHERE LIVING BEGINS- WordPress:

“Less than a year after the death of her husband, Louisa took Lily and moved to Africa as a missionary. Louisa remarried in South Africa and spent the remaining 37 years of her life in three different African nations. Lily and her husband also became life-long missionaries on the African continent.

Louisa’s hymn of faith, borne out of desperation and loss, is still sung among the tribe in Zimbabwe where she died.
Louisa and her daughter became destitute. One day the two sat at their empty dinner table. The took each other’s hands and Louisa prayed, giving thanks to God for providing for all their needs. As Louisa prayed, a knock was heard at the door. Outside on the porch was a hot meal and an envelope of money.” This verse closed out the article:
I have trusted in Your mercy; my heart shall rejoice in Your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, because He has dealt bountifully with me (Psalm 13:5-6).

KELLY NEO – Amen! How could we dare ask for more, yet He is ever faithful.

RHONDA J – I read that as well and remember always singing that verse, too! Prayers for your son’s broken heart! It is hard as a mama to watch our kids experience pain and not be able to fix it! May he come to rely on the Lord.

Echoing all the HAPPY BIRTHDAY blessings,
LYNNE FROM ALABAMA! Like Rhonda said, may the happy memories of Jack’s past efforts bring you joy on this special day. Praying for Gina!

ADRIENNE – Glad Bella is okay; how scary!!!
I, too, agree with you about singing these old hymns by rote. I think for me some of the reason is the style and language. These melodies are much harder to sing than contemporary music!

KRISTINE LOUGHMAN – So sorry Violet is missing this event that she has trained so hard for! Our son was at a college baseball camp when he got sick and had to leave in the middle of everything. It is a big deal even though it may not have eternal significance and my heart goes out to you and Violet.

SHARON JERSEY GIRL – Praying for safety today and tomorrow and for a break in the weather for the ceremony/reception.

May health be restored to all those ailing with bugs and rest be plentiful for the weary this weekend! Halfway through this study already!!!

  11. Mari V says:

Jesus, Jesus, how I trust HIM. And this is where I want to be always trusting HIM because He knows best, even when we don’t understand, we Trust HIM! Happy Friday sweet She’s!

  12. GramsieSue says:

Have a blessed birthday, LYNNE from AL!!!

  13. Sharon, Jersey Girl says:

Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus! Another beloved & familiar hymn! Where would we be without the love of Christ?!! “The Lord, the Lord, is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation.” (Isaiah 12:2) So thankful that God’s mercy and grace are so much greater in our time of need. I had read this same story recently. How sad and tragic a normal day turned out. We never know when the unthinkable will happen, but we do know the one who knows and holds the future in His hands, and because of that – we can trusts and not be afraid.

@Lynn from Alabama – HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! May God richly bless your day!
@Kristine Loughman – So sorry that Violet had to miss this important event. Praying God will give peace to her heart and may she get better soon. Sending prayers and hugs!

I’m now off to a wedding rehearsal for a wedding my husband is officiating. Tomorrow is the big day and the weather prediction is awful! Tropical storm, winds and rain. I feel bad for the bride and groom who have been waiting 2 years for this special day…pray God might send a break in the weather just to get through the wedding ceremony, it’s tomorrow at 3:00.

@all my SRT sisters – Happy Friday!

  14. Rhonda J. says:

    Good Morning!

Finally! A hymn that is written on my heart from my childhood! And how I love this one! As I was reading through all the old comments from before, someone posted a 4th verse to the song, which I believe we sung as well, and I love the words-

I’m so glad I learned to trust thee,
    precious Jesus, Savior, friend;
and I know that thou art with me,
wilt be with me to the end.

The story that goes along with it is heartbreaking and inspiring. I love how God comes to our rescue when we trust in Him. I look back to my breakup with my son’s father. I was heartbroken after only 2.5 years of marriage (and Michael being 1.5), when he told me he wasn’t in love with me and wanted to separate. BUT, I KNEW God would take care of me and have something better, yet it doesn’t take away the sadness and hurt. You have to give it to God and TRUST Him with your all. We have to have that foundation of trust so it is unbreakable.

Thank you for your sweet thoughts for my son and his breakup. I always copy/paste your prayers that I request. It is so heartwarming to have a faithful praying group and to see caring sisters in Christ! What a blessing!

Kristine-prayers for your sweet daughter! That’s so hard when they are sick and miss, and don’t get to participate. :/

Happy Birthday Lynn!! I hope you have a wonderful, wonderful day. I hope even though Jack may not be all in as he used to, you remember the love that he showed all those previous years, and count it all as joy!

  15. Adrienne says:

Let us make a big deal of your birthday, on behalf of Jack, LYNNE FROM AL! I hope you receive many well wishes today from your SRT sisters. Hope your birthday is blessed!

My dog, Bella, got in a fight with some coyotes yesterday. She looked terrible, but appears so much better today… “Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus”! Thank you, Jesus, for Bella’s recovery! Seems silly to focus on that when so many others have more “serious” matters. But He knows how big this “little” thing really is!

    Happy Friday, she’s.

  16. Danielle B says:

What a treat to learn more behind the old hymns I grew up singing. I too find myself singing them in my head as I read them. Lifting up all the She’s both the requests spoken and unspoken.

  17. Searching says:

As ADRIENNE said yesterday, slowing down to read these hymns – what a difference. A friend of mine’s grandson is having problems with reading comprehension, and I realized there is an issue with me with hymn comprehension on these familiar hymns (3 for 2 this week) – singing familiar words by rote and not letting the words or meaning sink in. Trust in Jesus, from sin and self to cease.

Amen, KELLY (NEO), His sacrifice on the cross, so thankful.

Happy birthday, LYNNE FROM AL! ❤️
Praying for Gina, successful surgery and recovery.

TERESA DONLEY – glad to hear you’re recovering!

RHONDA J – praying for your son & empathizing with him from my experiences around that age. I was thanking the Lord not too long ago for not answering my pleading prayers for relationships to be restored back in my younger years – His plans are ALWAYS better, praying for the Lord’s comfort for your son’s hurting heart. Praying for the jail ministry and your fall small group.

KRISTINE LOUGHMAN & MOLLY R – praying for family health, and Molly – for your friend’s cancer diagnosis and treatment

MERCY – praying joy and gladness for you! ❤️

NICOLE BURKE – can’t find your post, but thank you for your family’s hard work! Praying for good weather and smooth harvesting.

  18. Kristine Loughman says:

The last line of the hymn… “life and rest, and joy and peace”. Yearning for all those things. Fall Break starts tomorrow and oh how I’m hoping to spend the week filling my joy and peace bucket.

Violet my daughter is too sick to attend her biggest cross country meet of the year today. Her heart is hurting at the thought of letting down her team, and mine hurts for her. In the grand scheme of things this is a small, small problem. But when you’re 13, it’s your whole world. I know there are so many moms on here who have navigated this road before – will you send a few hugs our way?

  19. Kelly (NEO) says:

“Sing to the Lord, for he has done glorious things.” The greatest of which is dying on the cross so that I might live.

LYNNE FROM ALABAMA – happy birthday! Praying Gina’s surgery goes well today.

  20. McKenna Thulin says:

Just what I needed to remember this morning!

  21. Kristin Lehmann says:

    2“Behold, God is my salvation;
    I will trust, and will not be afraid;
for the Lord God is my strength and my song,
and he has become my salvation.”
Through these times of fear, I choose the trust Jesus!

  22. Madison Mayfield says:

As a recent college graduate, I was working at my church as a Mother’s day Out teacher. With corona, we had to shutdown. I am barely having any money come in. I thankfully live with my parents, but it’s still hard in the time of uncertainty. I am looking to move, find a new job, a place to live. These things seem so impossible. Yet I am reminded that “Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus.” Her words spoken seem to be about the only thing I know to cling onto. Knowing uncertainty is horrible, but knowing I can cling to God and his truths, that’s so amazing.

  23. Molly Gilbane says:

What a beautiful reminder— I needed this today. In the midst of the unprecedented Coronavirus pandemic, fear and anxiety fill our hearts and minds. Lord, thank you for the reminder that even in the dark times, the scary times, You are surely our salvation. We can trust in You and not be afraid. “Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, just to take Him at His word.” Lord, thank you for never leaving us. For never forsaking us. You are God. You reign over our hearts and minds and fill us with a peace that transcends understanding. Thanks be to God!

    1. Jen Brewer says:

I’m a point in which I must trust God for lots and honestly I’m scared and slightly overwhelmed. I am not sure how to walk out this trust right now. Please do pray for me!

    1. McKenna Holcomb says:

4 months ago, how I hope you have seen the Lords provision! I completely understand where you were at. God is a good God, and a trustworthy God, but our flesh can have a hard time trusting. Praying for you this morning! You are loved, praise the Lord for His mighty hand in our lives!

    1. Myrna says:

      Beautiful! Thank you for sharing!

  41. Victoria says:

“Just to rest upon His promise” – what a beautiful line. We can only find true rest in Jesus. When life is crazy and we’re so tired, we can find rest in His promise to us.

  42. Tori says:

In a difficult season in my life (family hardships, work problems, figuring out how to pay the bills) I needed a reminder to simply take him at His word. He has already assured me that he had taken care of everything, and I get so drowned in my problems I forget that. I forget that it’s already all ok. Time to start saying thank You even when I am suffering because He keeps His word and He has assured me that.

  43. Kailey says:

I agree it is so important to trust God in hard times. But find it upsetting how in the story, being without a husband, Louise was portrayed as completely defenseless and incompetent of providing. I really checked out at that point.

    1. Shannon Allbright says:

I also do not like when women are portrayed as helpless; it helped me to think of it in context. The story is a bit dramatized to the specific moment of suffering. This occurred in Long Island in 1882, when there would have been very little opportunity for a woman whose husband was providing before. She also would have been grief-stricken and it wouldn’t take that long to starve would it? She could have been struggling and praying only for a few days before help came and God provided the push she needed. After this, she and her daughter became missionaries in South Africa! :) I hope that helps!

      1. Kailey says:

        It does, thank you.

  44. Tatcasas says:

Please pray for me I’m having a really tough time trusting in God at the moment that he will make my life well and that he will support me. I know he will but it’s hard to trust right now

    1. She Reads Truth says:

Absolutely praying for you. Asking the Lord to make His faithfulness visible to you in this time. Grateful for you.

      – Stormye

    2. Katrina says:

      Praying ❤️

  45. Rachel says:

This is exactly what I needed to read and study on. I try and do things myself and forget that if I just trust his promises, he will sustain me.

  46. Tesia says:

I definitely need the grace to trust him more. I am trying so hard to be a good wife, sister, teacher, friend, and always coming up short. Oh for grace to rest and trust that Jesus has me.

  47. Kayley Hope Wolst says:

God is so good, even in the tough, dark, and scary places, even in sadness. But God always provides and is our rock and redeemer and our safe place, like warm, dry shelter in a cave on a rainy, stormy, dangerous night.

Others aren’t as lucky as we are, and we have to realize that we need to be grateful. We are very fortunate.

  48. Emily says:

Praying that the Lord will TRULY be my strength and my song today. I, too often, trust anything except for Father- today I will “take Jesus at His word and believe that He will care for us”

  49. lyssa says:

trust. a child like trust..at times when felt betrayed by others..a hard thing to do..and yet…it is sweet..when trusting Jesus..over and over he provides..opening his hand his heart his presence and his grace…he wows me..a vulnerability to christ..trusting him…thanks for the thoughts!!

  50. Katelyn Hamm says:

It is just that simple. Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus! I feel that sweetness, but I can trust him more on a day to day basis and feel that sweetness all day long.

  51. SLaRosh says:

“Just to take him at his word.” It’s that simple. It’s that perfect. If I believe what he says then nothing can touch me, because he is the victor.

  52. Jen @focusladies says:

I’ve known this song since 8 was a child. But, today at the age of 33 I am understanding what the line “O for grace to trust Him more.” These words resonate with me more today in the season of life where I have so many unknowns and a dark trial. I need His Amazing Grace to trust Him more. Thank You for this study! ♥

  53. Christina says:

  54. Latoya Irving says:

This was an awesome word today I have faith in him and trust him for the good and the bad that is around me only God can turn things around to God be the glory God bless.

  55. Beautiful_warrior says:

Both of my siblings have kids and I was content with not having my own children. Well today I found out that my sister is pregnant. It hit me hard and I am trying to trust God with his plan for me.

      Amen! Me too!

  57. megan says:

We grew up not completely poor but pretty impoverished meaning we had a roof over our heads and never went hungry. Even though my mom worked three jobs, never asked or begged from people sometimes she couldn’t make ends meet. We were blessed so many times by our church family and friends. whether it was a knock at the door and bags of groceries were sitting there, bags of hand me down clothes (which I still love), someone taking us to get shoes etc. My mom always trusted God. God blessed my mom for her faith and faithfulness. “Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus”!!!

  58. kaila says:

Very good reminder. Needing this word today.

  59. Theresa says:

Thanks for bringing us the stories behind the hymns. I found your website a few days ago and am grateful for your words that remind us of Gods truth and portray real life not some perfect happily ever after.

  60. Sarah says:

I found a beautiful version of this song, and I wanted to share it with you.

    1. Kaila says:

I found this one too. So beautiful. I always look the songs up and listen to them. Loved this version!

  61. Sybil says:

My friends are currently struggling with the illness of their infant. Their prayer has been “I believe, help my unbelief.” This line reminds me so much of that “O for grace to trust Him more!” Whether that trust comes in difficult times like they’re facing or in the everyday struggles of life that Louisa faced–may I trust Him more!

  62. Praise says:

My favorite line in this sweet song is “O for Grace”. The grace that was the work of the cross but also the realization that He is Grace!

  63. Cheryl says:

Love the spiral notebook – any way that could be a ‘norm’?

    1. Denise says:

I agree – It is so much easier to journal and read laying flat

  64. Kristi says:

I absolutely love the MSG translation of Galatians 2:19-21 and wanted to share it here:

“What actually took place is this: I tried keeping rules and working my head off to please God, and it didn’t work. So I quit being a “law man” so that I could be God’s man. Christ’s life showed me how, and enabled me to do it. I identified myself completely with him. Indeed, I have been crucified with Christ. My ego is no longer central. It is no longer important that I appear righteous before you or have your good opinion, and I am no longer driven to impress God. Christ lives in me. The life you see me living is not “mine,” but it is lived by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I am not going to go back on that.”

    1. Tina says:

Powerful words. And you are right Kristi, they are more our language and understandable…
      Thank you for sharing…
      Blessings..x

    2. Ahyana says:

Kristi such a practical and ppwerfil read especially as I am amid so many transitions at work and home. Thank you for posting!

    3. Tricia says:

I love that! Thank you for sharing.

  65. Thelesia says:

    beautiful, and gently encouraging.

  66. Caroline says:

One of my favorites! I’m only a 20-something, but I went through a time in my teenage years that I thought hymns were so boring and I couldn’t connect with them- silly me! I am grateful for the recent valleys God has planned for my life, because within the past six months I have never looked at hymns the same. They have actually been the only worship music I listen to because of their deep spiritual truths tied to Scripture. The words of these songs have blessed me tremendously, pointed me back to reading Scripture daily, and have surely strengthened my walk with Christ. This hymn in particular has given me so much peace- ‘just to take Him at his word.’ That’s not always easy especially in the rough times, but if we can simply decide and make up our minds to leave it ALL in His hands and trust Him with it all, we will be at peace just knowing His word is true and He is trustworthy with every detail of our lives. It really is so sweet.

  67. Maria says:

The words of this hymn and the Scripture reading blessed me beyond words.

  68. Carrie Rogers says:

    Tis so sweet ❤️

  69. Veronica says:

What a beautiful song, and a beautiful story! Losing my husband is one of my greatest and slightly irrational fears, and seeing Louisa not only continue through this trial but glorify God so greatly (and to see his faithful provision for her!) is almost more then my heart can handle today. I am overwhelmed with thankfulness for his goodness even when we are lacking, even when he seems distant.

I look at the state of our country, and fear tempts to overtake me. I see our lack in finances, and fear knocks again. I see the struggles my family and friends go through and am overcome by fear for their salvation, for our friendship, and in some cases for their life. But today I will sing this song as a reminder that no matter how lost things seem, no matter how hopeless I feel, Jesus’s words are true and worth trusting in. ‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus. ❤️

  70. Bridget says:

This is my two year old son’s favorite lullaby. I sing it countless times every night. I’m pretty sure I’m singing it more to me than him… I need a nightly reminder.

  71. Lindsay Prater says:

“5Praise the Lord in song, for He has done excellent things; Let this be known throughout the earth. 6Cry aloud and shout for joy, O inhabitant of Zion, For great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel. ” Love this!

  72. Julie says:

What a sad and heartbreaking story behind these powerful words. Through the hard times God is our constant source of comfort and we must always trust him.

  73. Jean says:

This is just what I needed this morning. I am facing the possibility of some serious surgery in the next few da good friend about this

    1. Emily says:

Praying for comfort and peace for you in this time. God is our great Healer, sister in Christ! I pray that you are healed quickly (hopefully without the surgery, but if that is His will I pray that His presence never leaves you and that you are healed through the doctors’ hands).

    2. Tina says:

Holding you up in prayer Jean. Praying peace and healing over dear sister…
      God be with you.xx

  74. Herminia Esqueda says:

Reminds me of all the prayers my mother in law would pray and how timely they were answered, from her own healing to praying that the lawnmower would start or we would find the keys. One Christmas we had no money, my husband had just lost his job. We prayed as a family and thanked God for our blessings. The following week we got a check for $300 in the mail from our bank that they had overpaid our property taxes. Our children still remember that Christmas. ‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus.

  75. Kisha says:

Oh how I needed this truth this morning. So many things happening all at once but God has been faithful to remind me (again) to just trust Him. You just don’t understand how timely this was for me!!!!

  76. Kylee says:

Amen. The simplest and yet most difficult thing! May God grant us all an extra measure of grace to trust Him more with our lives; He’s been God a long time, He knows what He’s doing!

    1. Shelia says:

      Amen.

  77. Cecelia says:

This. This is what it all boils down to. Christianity isn’t hard, it’s the simplest and most gut-wrenchingly difficult (at least for me). Just believe. Just trust. In spite of circumstances. In spite of ‘reality’ this reality remains – God is a good, good father, he has good plans for us, he loves us and he is faithful.

  78. There’s a fourth verse that I know and love. It’s beautiful:
I’m so glad I learned to trust Thee,
    Precious Jesus, Savior, Friend;
And I know that Thou art with me,
Wilt be with me to the end.

    1. Sarah M says:

Yes! :) we sing ALL the verses at our church, for better or worse. Haha

    2. Marilyn B. says:

Yes!!! I love the final verse – and it’s so sweet, my kids learned that one in our Bible Study Fellowship preschool program. It’s such a reassuring truth. <3

    3. She Reads Truth says:

LOVE this. Thanks for sharing, friend.

      xoxo-Kaitlin

  79. Keri McCue says:

“And to take Him at His word…” Such a powerful line and so comforting to me this morning. So often I fail to trust Him and I fail to believe His word. When the trust is lacking, there is always confirmation from fellow believers around me!

  80. Heather (MNmomma) says:

Today’s hymn and reading were so powerful to me. My dear friend’s sweet daughter, Hannah(17), is starting chemo today. She was diagnosed last week with hodgkin’s lymphoma, stage 2…..she is one heck of a wonderful, Christ focused young lady. I was trying to find her cover of Lauren Diagle’s “Trust in You”, but I can only find it on Facebook (not her Youtube acct.) If you could lift her and her family up, it would be awesome! Thank you prayer warriors!!!

    1. churchmouse says:

      Praying right now

    2. Lianna says:

    3. Brenda says:

      praying for Hannah.

    4. Kylee says:

Praying for strength & peace for Hannah and her family.

    5. Cindy says:

Prayers for precious Hannah… “He knows the steps I take, and when he has searched me out, I will come forth as gold…”

    6. Amen says:

Praying for you through this journey and to remain focused on the light.

    7. Jenna H says:

      Prayers for hannah

  81. churchmouse says:

“Let this be known throughout the earth.” Yes! With all that is circulating through the news and social media, may I cry out that “God is my salvation. I will trust Him and not be afraid, for Yah, the Lord, is my strength and song.” Encouraged by these words this morning to simply trust Him more and more.

  82. Elaine says:

Sometimes God puts us in a place where we have no choice but to trust Him. I am in that place. But the best part of being there is that He is right there with me. I see Him working in my life, providing for my needs through the generosity of others. I feel Him taking my hand and guiding me on the path He wants me to go. His faithfulness is steadfast. He never lets us go through the hard times alone. I am so grateful! This hymn is so sweet to sing. The words are so real to me.

  83. Morgan Brown says:

Just to take him at his word and rest in his promise and know thus sayeth the Lord…Lord I take You at Your word and rest in Your Promises knowing that what You said You will do, thank You Jesus for Your promises and the rest.❤️

  84. Tina says:

‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,
    and to take him at his word;
just to rest upon his promise,
and to know, “Thus saith the Lord.”….

Fantastic and beautiful words…in the mist of trials, hardship and sorrow…and yet..
    But God…
This for sure was a But God situation…wasn’t it…?
I have loved reading about the hymns this week, I have loved reading briefly how they came to be penned…
What amazes me is the years may come and go, yet.. the situations could have been in our times..
Day 1..George Matheson..Something so traumatic, a pain he could not bear to name
Day 2…Lack of and yet…provision of to be able to be the composer God created him, Haldor Lillenas to be..
Day 3…A new Christian….Edward Mote,on fire for the Lord and the new understanding, basic though it might have been, of his salvation…His hope was built on nothing less…But Jesus..
Day 4…Knowledge of the Father God, was a guide to young Isaac Watts…
Day 5…A tragedy, loss, hardship…But God…Provision…when life looked bleak…Louisa Stead could not contain herself, but to write…her precious words of how she trusted Jesus…
O for the Grace to trust Him more!!!
    The common thread….
    But God..
…Years may come and go, Situations may change, but the Lord our God, will forever be praised..
    The same yesterday, today, forever…
“I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the mist of the congregation, I will sing your praise…”(Hebrews 2:12)
Young Mr Watts, had the right words..
O God our help in ages past, (yet and still) our HOPE for years to come…Amen..
What a week, what revival for me on the hymn front… Thank you my dears for adding to my worship and praise..(and correcting my faux pas, Hillsong indeed..lol)
Happy Friday…Blessings for you and yours over the weekend…xxxxx

    1. Mary Beth says:

Thank you for your words, Tina. You have blessed me even more this morning!

    2. Pam says:

Thank you for that summary, Tina. It was a blessing to me as well. Happy Friday to you!

    3. candacejo says:

Beautiful! “…just from Jesus simply taking
life and rest, and joy and peace.” Love, love this song. Always been such a strength down through the years. Thank you for your summation, too. ♥

    4. Heather (MNmomma) says:

      So very, very true…

    5. Shelia says:

Your thoughts and words have blessed me once again.

    6. Amen says:

Thank you for speaking with us through your words.
Through and with God, we can remain focused on our humanity.
“O God our help in ages past, (yet and still) our HOPE for years to come…Amen”

  85. Angela says:

Confession : I don’t know if I could trust in Jesus if something like that happened to me. :(

    1. Tina says:

Angela, with God on side you will be amazed how possible it is…Eventually…it’s a process..one day at a time…
      God is good…always..
      Keep trusting Him…
      Blessings

    2. Lesley says:

I think God gives us the strength for these things when we need it.
It reminded me of a quote from The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom. She is talking to her father about how she is worried about him dying one day.
“Corrie, when you and I go to Amsterdam, when do I give you your ticket?”
“Why, just before we get on the train.”
“Exactly. And our wise Father in heaven knows when we’re going to need things too. Don’t run out ahead of Him. When the time of need comes, you will look into your heart and find the strength you need — just in time.”

      1. Elizabeth says:

Lesley, that is awesome!! Thank you for sharing that. Truthfully, I think we all look at others that are suffering terribly and think we might not survive that. However, we know that those people survive and we would too. I think we would feel the presence of God like no other time. He promises to be close to the broken-hearted. I don’t know how, but I will trust in that promise because He has been faithful to me so far!

    3. Mary Beth says:

God is what gives us hope in these situations ! Without Him there is no hope. Thanks for your honesty, Angela. You are right, it’s easy to say we would trust God through everything but when it really comes down to it, would we? I hope to build a firm foundation now so that when tragedy strikes, it will be automatic for me to trust in God and run to Him.

    4. painted praises says:

It takes time Angela.. to learn to trust Him after such tragedy.. But very much possible. I myself lost two children in a matter of 7 years and I turned my self from Him yet He never left me.. It did take some time to collect myself but in that time He sustained me.. He kept me.. and He held me close.. Blessings to you my dear sister

  86. Rachel says:

I love the simplicity of this song, and how small blessings can lead us towards God. How easily I can forget, in my privileged lifestyle, how much God provides for all my needs, and how much I need him. Thank you for reminding me of this today.
