The Lord’s Glory in Zion

Isaiah 58:1-14, Isaiah 59:1-21, Isaiah 60:1-22, Revelation 21:22-27

Scripture Reading: Isaiah 58:1-14, Isaiah 59:1-21, Isaiah 60:1-22, Revelation 21:22-27

We like to think we’re advanced. Culturally, socially, and technologically, it’s easy for us to think that we’re lightyears ahead of our predecessors. And in many ways, we are. But an honest look around at things we use daily will quickly show that some of our most basic things have been around for a very long time.

One of those is the humble hinge. Did you know they’ve found hinges that date back to ancient Egypt? You’ll find it on every door and cabinet in your house. That small piece that holds two things together and helps them open. Without them, you don’t have doors—at least not ones that work.

Our reading today combines two big pieces of prophecy, two pictures of the glory of God dwelling with His people. One given in the book of Isaiah, and in the book of Revelation. In Isaiah, the hope of God’s people Israel was to be restored from exile to their homeland. They hoped to see the glory of God in Jerusalem again. And part of that had happened—Israel was brought back from exile and settled back in the promised land. For the prophecy given to John in Revelation, our hope is set on a future reality. It’s the end of all things, and also the beginning of eternity—when God’s people will be fully with Him in the new heavens and new earth.

But there’s a hinge for the two pictures we read today. The image of God’s glory shining brightly in Jerusalem that we see in Isaiah 58–60 happened through a person—Jesus, about whom John wrote, “That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it” (John 1:5). What Isaiah saw was revealed in Jesus. His life, death, and resurrection have brought salvation to us and glory to the Father. His kingdom has broken in. In Jesus, the glory of the Father is fully displayed. Just a bit later in John 1 it says “We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).

Remember, Isaiah said “Indeed, the LORD’s arm is not too weak to save” and “his own arm brought salvation, and his own righteousness supported him.” (Isaiah 59:1,16). Our salvation will be complete when sin and darkness are no more. God’s glory will be fully seen and experienced by all those who have trusted in Christ. His kingdom will be fully established.

So we wait. We have hope in the One who is strong to save. We see the darkness around us, but we dwell on the Light within us—the Light that cannot be overcome.

    Hello Shes
The true fast is not giving up sweets, social media & shopping. It’s ridding ourselves of bad mouthing, balking & bitterness. Isaiah goes on … finger pointing, falsifying & dismissing the afflicted.
Lord, guide me from the darkness of sin.
    So to…
    Delight in the sabbath.
    Hold relationships dear.
Travel the “great highway of faith”.
    Where truth resides.
    Where love prevails.
    Where good works lie.
This I pursue in the name of Jesus.
    ALSO
Did anyone else notice how Paul in his letter to the Ephesians, Chapter 6: 10-17, “the armor of God”, parallels Isaiah 59: 17…”He put on righteous as body armor”? Paul knew his OT, particularly the oft quoted prophet Isaiah.
Have a transformative Tuesday, my sisters!

Today is my last full Texas and my heart is sad to leave my grandparents, but is also so full from this quality time together. Loved the passage in Isaiah 58:6-7 and 58:11. Praying everyone has a lovely Tuesday! <3

Hi! The Bible passages for today and yesterday are the same. Is that how it supposed to be?

    1. Anne Klinkhammer says:

I don’t think so, because the reading mentioned Isaiah 58-60. Kinda weird. But I’m going to go read 58-60 and see if corresponds to the essay better.

      Mine are the same also

Also thanks to those who posted the readings. It’s awesome that the team at She’s hopefully doesn’t have to worry when glitches happen because this community just helps and we get to still be women in the Bible everyday. Have a good day She’s!

  15. Brandi Young says:

Hmmmmm… What a glorious promise. It stood out to me when He said in Is. 60: 10b “In my wrath (judgment, punishment) I struck you but in my favor I have had mercy on you. Like He’s sayin “ I have punished you but now that that’s over, I’m about to restore you and give you yet another chance!” What. Good ABBA we serve!

  16. Mari V says:

Slept-in (again) it little longer. Echoing the comments of many of you here. Well written devo. “Our salvation will be complete when sin and darkness are no more.” Can’t wait! “We wait.” “We hope in the One who is strong to save.” Thank you JESUS! When I got home from work yesterday after errands after work. Exhausted. There was a letter on the table from the Sheriffs Dept. I knew exactly what it was. This happened fast. Yep, the EX was served and court date (as mentioned 2 weeks ago) is set for May 13th. Sigh….. part of me was hoping for this not to happen. Court triggers me and its not easy. I know MY JESUS goes with me. I know HE does, but it doesn’t make it easy for me. Spoke with someone from Women’s Haven and an advocate will accompany me to court. I know that’s the reason I could not get up this morning. Phil 4:13. Love you sweet SRT sisters!

    1. DW says:

Praying for you, Mari! Praying for God to strengthen you and give you peace! He is your protector, redeemer, friend and STRENGTH! He loves you so much! ❤️

    2. Rachel says:

Sweet Mari! So sorry you have to go back to court. I pray that in these days of waiting your heart will know perfect peace because your mind is set on your Jesus. Wish we could come with you! I have zero tolerance for bullies and would like nothing more to join you standing against him. But you have Jesus, and He is a WAY better defender than any of us would be! ❤️

      1. Kelly (NEO) says:

        Agree!

        1. Mari V says:

Thank sweet She’s!! I appreciate all your kind words and heartfelt thoughts. In my humanness, I feel so scared, but I know that my Jesus goes with me and all your prayers and encouragement.

  17. Sharon, Jersey Girl says:

In these passages God points out that there is emptiness of religion. He doesn’t want our works – He wants our hearts, and then our works will be acceptable to Him. He wants us to truly worship Him, not the “idea of Him”.
    .
God sees our sin, and our sin is the problem. Our sin brings darkness, it blurs the lines so we can not see clearly. It is only when we confess our sins and turn from them that we see the glorious light of the LORD.
    .
Interestingly, God wants us to share in His ultimate victory, but if we sit back — He will accomplish it, with or without us. (Isaiah 59:16-19)
    .
“Our salvation will be complete when sin and darkness are no more…We see the darkness around us, but we dwell on the Light within us—the Light that cannot be overcome.”

What a day that will be — when sin and darkness are no more. It is so hard to imagine – but it is going to happen, and what a glorious day that will be!! God has so many riches stored up for us in heaven!

It is a sad thought that not everyone’s name is written in the Lamb’s book of life. I pray that God will give me open doors to share the good news of the gospel and that He will give me utterance of speech – so that the lost can hear and have opportunity to be saved.

May each of us walk in the light and love of Jesus today. Be blessed my sisters! ❤️

    2. Tami says:

      Love this!

  18. Erica Chiarelli says:

Thank God for His light within us…the Holy Spirit in us…and for all Jesus did for us at the cross!

  19. Rhonda J. says:

The hinge–who knew? And what a great thought that it all hinges on a hinge to work, for the door to be opened. Jesus is the hinge that opens the door. It also is the piece that connects. It connects, and brings forth the movement necessary to close off or open to access. Jesus is the only Access to God. The light then is revealed to see and bring us to God! In him is our assurance, our blessed assurance–Praise YOU Lord!! The old will be gone, fallen away. The dark pierced with a great Light!!

The dark is hard, but be assured Jesus is the light that can change it all. Hope and joy and peace is there to find when we make right with our God, through Jesus, acknowledging and confessing our wrongs in humbleness and earnest, He is just and merciful to forgive and restore, and wrap us in His arms. The whole of Israel will see His light, and the world. But until then, it is our daily walk and hope, the faith and relationship that keeps us connected. Don’t let anything dim your light. Through the dark is where the light makes it’s deepest impact! You can be a beacon for others in that place! Amen! Don’t get discouraged church, the promise is there, He will come in the blink of an eye, but is holding back so that none should perish! And until then, we should not be idle, but a worker bee, a hinge, for the Kingdom! Constantly revealing the light to the dark places! I am SO grateful that I, (ME!!) GET to be a vessel for God, a disciple of Jesus! Nothing could be more fulfilling!

    Happy Tuesday!

What solace that the light cannot be overcome and one day will be solely provided by the Lord.

I’m with you Kelly (NEO) bring on the revival. God pressed upon me the other week to read Revelation. Whoa what lies ahead for the people who don’t believe makes me want to pray more for our prodigals and others who don’t believe.

“The Redeemer will come to Zion and to those in Jacob who turn from transgression.” Isaiah 59:20

Lord my heart longs for your light. Your word calls me to arise and shine, for Your glory is upon me. In the moments of darkness in my life, I trust that Your light will guide me bringing clarity, peace and hope where there seems to be none.

“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord will shine over you.” Isiah 60:1

    1. Christy says:

      Amen!❤️

  25. Searching says:

I’ve mentioned before that I’ve said many times to the Israelites when reading through the Bible, “Stop, No, Don’t do that!!” Or, “Not again!”
    .
    Isaiah 59: end of v 12 – 13:
Yes, we know what sinners we are.
13 We know we have rebelled and have denied the LORD.
We have turned our backs on our God.
We know how unfair and oppressive we have been,
    carefully planning our deceitful lies.

I know this, and yet … there I go again, sinning. Lord, please guide me to rein in thoughts and to stop words and actions that are wrong. Guide me, please Lord, to honor you throughout the day, everyday.

Thankful our hope and salvation is in Jesus!

“Indeed, the Lord’s arm is not too weak to save,

and his ear is not too deaf to hear.

But your iniquities are separating you

    from your God,

and your sins have hidden his face from you

so that he does not listen.”
    .
When God feels far away and silent I need to remember this: He has not gone anywhere, it may be some barrier I have put in place that has to be removed for relationship with Him to be restored.
    .
“The Lord saw that there was no justice,

    and he was offended.

He saw that there was no man—

so his own arm brought salvation,
