Text: 1 Samuel 16:6-13, Isaiah 11:1-6, Isaiah 53:2-3
My husband has studied the history of our families. So many times I have rolled my eyes and thought, What’s the point? Humbly I have come to understand that those who have gone before us have rich stories that intersect our own. Together these stories of hardship and success, struggles and victories, messy choices and redemption paint the grand story of grace, hope, faith and love. We share a history, and it is through their seed we have life. Our story through time is God’s story.
The beauty of Advent is found when we look back into our rich history and peer into the window of God’s perfect plan for His family. When we do, we see David and Mary—two chosen people, years apart from one another—who had faith and accepted their role that ultimately ushered in a baby: the Messiah. This young, unassuming pair of biblical characters are living proof of the words from 1 Samuel 16:7:
“For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
A young shepherd boy named David was summoned from the field by his father Jesse to appear before Samuel. He was young, ordinary, unsuspecting – he was chosen. In secret he was anointed, and the scriptures say, “from that day forward the Spirit of the Lord came upon David in power” (1 Samuel 16:13).
David – a man after God’s own heart.
A young virgin girl named Mary was engaged to a man Joseph, who was himself from the line of David. Mary is visited by an angel who tells her, “The Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!” She was young, ordinary, unsuspecting – she was chosen. In secret, she was anointed by God.
Mary – a woman after God’s own heart.
The stem of Jesse divinely intersects with the womb of a young girl, and God’s pattern of grace, love and redemption for the world is born. He is Immanuel – God is with us.
“…and a little child (the Messiah) shall lead them.” – Isaiah 11:6
God’s glorious story of redemption is seen from the first word of Scripture to the last. Our birth, our destiny, our purpose is born of God’s love. Our creator always has a plan, one that takes a tiny seed and multiplies it abundantly— a plan that takes a tiny baby born of humble means and makes Him a King, the Savior of the world.
The stories of young David and Mary are miraculously similar because that is the way God works—He uses the humble, the ordinary and the unsuspecting to bring glory to His Kingdom forever and ever. Let us sit in adoration of the One who penned the greatest story of all time, the story that extends love and grace from the heights of heaven to all we who humbly walk the earth. Thanks be to God!
“Infinite, and an infant.
Eternal, and yet born of a woman.
Almighty, and yet hanging on a woman’s breast.
Supporting a universe, and yet needing to be carried in a mother’s arms.
King of angels, and yet the reputed son of Joseph.
Heir of all things, and yet the carpenter’s despised son.
Oh, the wonder of Christmas.”
– Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892)

I struggle to think lower of myself in front of others, to show them my weaknesses…and that’s just how great God is- that he doesn’t even consider how good he looks in front of others, his only thought is about saving his people. He came as a baby- so helpless and needy. We can’t ever lose that humble nature either. Love this one:)
Infinite! He is glorious! He is perfect! Came in this world as a baby! So humble! The story of Christmas, of the gospel, is incredible! It’s really crazily amazing! The way God went about bringing redemption to his chosen people freely through Christ, to us who do not deserve it! It’s so amazing! This was so refreshing to me! Thank you Debbie!
I think it is so amazing how God isn’t like men. He looks on the heart not the outward appearance.
I’m a little behind on my own advent study because I am doing two advent studies with the children. But this. Oh this is the amazing, wonderful, breath catching, tears of awe falling thing about Christmas. Our Creator, the One Who holds the world together, who created tadpoles that turn into frogs, that created stars and galaxies and trees and whales and sunflowers just for the joy of sunflowers, the One Who created me and you, He came to earth as a baby. A baby. Absolutely dependent on Mary to carry Him and nurse Him and sing to Him. A baby who cried with teething pain, who fells down and scraped His knees when He learned to walk, who had a first word and a first smile. Oh how He loves us that He would take off the cloak of His majesty just to save us, just to be tortured for our sins, just to hang on a tree with the worst of society for us. And it all began as a tiny prophesied Baby, born in a barn, surrounded by His creation and announced by the stars and the angels. Infinite, and an infant indeed.
Amen!! (I’m behind too :) )
Amazing!!!! Day 1 and day 4 (today) have been so profound!! This is my first devotional with this She Reads Truth…and I have been so incredibly blessed by it already !!!
I love those comparative profiles of David & Mary! Young, humble, unsuspecting. Dwelling on that just makes the Incarnation that much more profound. Wow, we have a good God.
I continually struggle with the need to be perfect. I feel that in order to be a testimony to other people, I need to be absolutely flawless, or else I am not representing Christ well. Today’s devotion is so beautiful. It reminds me that God uses the weak, sinful, poor and seemingly unworthy and makes them strong, holy, rich and worthy of death. He uses the weak to show how strong he is. I thank God for the beauty of His grace and that he uses my imperfection to further his kingdom!
I am so awestruck to see through this advent study, particularly through today's reading, the incredible way in which God's plan of salvation was created and written throughout the entire bible. It is such a reassurance to know that our almighty father, capable of such an intricate plan for all of humanity, does the same for each of our lives. And His vision can come to fruition if we only humble ourselves enough to allow Him room.
Isn't it wild- the ultimate testament of humility- our God becoming human in order to allow us to become more godly?
I’m new to this community and just catching up on the last few days. I’m so thankful for this opportunity to prepare for Christmas this year! I always read through the gospels in December but hearing others thoughts adds such insight, depth and beauty to the most wonderful story ever told. This has been the hardest year of my life. I have begged God to let me die and believed there was no purpose in life anymore. But this message today has rung true in my heart. God does not mistakes! He uses the humble and lowly! And he has a purpose for every precious child of His. His redeeming beautiful love overwhelms my heart. I am so thankful!
Our (my) birth, our (my) destiny, our (my) purpose is born of God's love. I want to remember this always. I want to hold close the thought of Him creating me, setting my path and purpose!!! His love is unbelievable!
I am brand new to this community and loving this advent study. Today I really loved the part where is said that God always had a plan. just yesterday, I was thinking about how we as women love a good romance where the guy is strong, virtuous, protective and always has a plan when things go wrong….and I love how God put that in our hearts knowing that He Himself would be the ultimate fulfillment to the romance our hearts crave. I especially love knowing that He can be trusted and His plans never fail.
Welcome to our community, friend! So grateful to have you here and that you would share your heart with us!

The world needs a God-breathed redefinition of potential, the Word is full of humble, poor, meek people that God used in miraculous ways! What a reminder to not judge others as we have no idea how God is using that person or their situation to better His kingdom. Also, a reminder that you and I are so loved and God is using us in ways we can’t fathom!
Great servants from humble beginnings… Gives me hope that God can, indeed, use me, just another sinner of lowly birth.
Knowing that David, Mary, and Jesus came from such humble beginnings, and that Jesus then went onto to become the King of Kings gives me hope that little ol’me can accomplish great things with Him on my side. Thank you God for choosing the humble and lowly!
That quote puts the entire message into perspective.
That ending quote was perfection! xoxo
It’s an interesting parallel that David was tending to sheep and we’re redeemed by the perfect sacrifice; the blood of the lamb..Jesus. May I continue to trust in God’s plan for my life.
Thank you for pointing that out!!
“Together these stories of hardship and success, struggles and victories, messy choices and redemption paint the grand story of grace, hope, faith and love”. Wow. Even when life seems to make no sense, this is saying that God has a plan. And it’s a good plan! Key words: grace, hope, faith, & love.
In my bible study group we always comment on the fact that God uses such ordinary weak people for His plans. We look at the popular, important people of the world (even in the church) and wonder why we aren't like that but it's always such a good reminder that God uses weak, humble, seemingly unimportant people. What a comfort, that God has plans for even me!
Also, this post reminded me of the song, "Mary, did you know"…. A Christmas favourite right now!
I adore how David was chosen because of his heart, and not what man would expect or from an appearance or status. He was the youngest of Jesse’s sons and wasn’t even allowed to attend the ceremony of the choosing if the anointing! Talk about unpredicted that it was he who was chosen!
This story of David points to a similar annointing our Lord Jesus had- He wasn’t accepted by men, but He was beyond accepted and called by God for His very purpose ever since the beginning. Amen to God Almighty for having this redeeming plan and for keeping His promises always.
Two things really touched and stood out to me today.
For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” – 1 Samuel 16:7
I really love this verse. I can be very quick to judge by appearance and be influenced by others opinions of people. That is exactly what the Lord doesn’t do! I ask You, Lord, to teach me to lead by example. Help me to see where others hearts are at. Not to judge. To love unconditionally just like You.
Second thing that touch me-
Our birth, our destiny, our purpose is born of God’s love. Our creator always has a plan, one that takes a tiny seed and multiplies it abundantly— a plan that takes a tiny baby born of humble means and makes Him a King, the Savior of the world.
The Lord CHOSE us with his heart. His plan is made of pure love! He has a plan for each and everyone of us. I can be so inpatient with learning what He has in store for me. I can feel useless in this giant world. Like a lost little girl, when I am a 26 year old woman who feels like I should have “more” accomplished or have done something “great” by now.
Dear Lord, teach my heart and soul to be patient with You and Your plan. I trust you with every piece of me. Settle my soul and teach me to appreciate and love the place I am at in this very moment of life
AMEN to today’s study!!! ❤
I can get scared of not doing something in the way God has planned, scared of somehow not letting Him lead me in His yoke, falling away from it or trying to run ahead in it, hurting my neck. But this today has shown me that what God plans cannot be shaken by anything that I– whether consciously or unconsciously– can do to mess it up. He chose to use a tiny baby, a human's flesh to be in, for the means by which He would save all mankind. He chose the exact setting, the exact time, the exact people all throughout Jesus' lineage– surely, anything I do to disrupt God's plans won't stand, but His promises and will WILL stand forever. This brings me much hope, much peace, and much relief as I realize that this fear, timidity, and hesitation are not from God at all, and never have been. Praise you, Lord Jesus! Praise You that we can trust You! Amen.

Beautiful!
“Our birth, our destiny, our purpose is born of God’s love. ” all of my hopes a desires were given a chance when Jesus was born, bringing grace to life. How beautiful. That’s a whole lot of truth to take in!!
The scripture posted about God looking at our hearts should read 1 Samuel 16:7 instead of 1 Samuel 11:7
Sometimes I look at the chosen people in the Bible and ponder how great they are, allowing myself to forget their mortal nature, that they also lived a life with sin. When I come back to reality and recognize it is all Gods greatness, His Grace and redemption story, I’m thankful.
Thankful God peers at our hearts and that He does know every detail of our life before even conception. All the days of our lives have been recorded in His book. Come on… He watched each of us being being formed and knit us together in utter seclusion, in our mothers wombs. How much more intimate and miraculous can He get. I love God and am praising Him for His Son, His sacrifice so we can be with our creator.
“Our birth, our destiny, our purpose is born of God’s love. Our creator always has a plan.”So comforting to know this as I go through treatments for cancer, I know he is with me and is using it for good.
Thank you again ladies for a wonderful learning experience. Enjoy your day gals,xo
Beth- enjoy your day too and always remember through everything that He is with you! I’ll be praying for you!
Thank you so much!:)
Praying for you Beth!
Thank you so much!:)
Prayers for you! Thank you for sharing this. I read your comment right before bed and was reminded of God’s beautiful plans for our lives, no matter what.
What struck me this morning is that God saw David’s heart and that means he knew it all. All of the sin David would commit and all of the good he would do and God anointed him and never left his side.
What a beautiful reminder, Maggie! Thanks for sharing your heart today!

"The stories of young David and Mary are miraculously similar because that is the way God works—He uses the humble, the ordinary and the unsuspecting to bring glory to His Kingdom forever and ever."
Don't you love that this is still the way it is? That God still calls the humble, the ordinary, the unsuspecting? I love hearing stories like that- the ordinary man called to lead a church. The ordinary woman called to the missionary life In a foreign country. The simple employee used by God to reach out to his/her coworkers. The unsuspecting child who recites what he/she has learned in church and brings a grandparent to salvation (true story, my husband helped lead his great grandmother to Christ by simply telling her the things he learned in Sunday School). The shepherd boy anointed by God. The young girl chosen to carry Jesus. And a baby used to save the world.
I love that I am a part of these stories too.
Amen. That He uses the humble to do His great and marvelous works. Hallelujah! Blessed be the name of the Lord! Amen!
–AnnaLee
So incredibly blessed by today’s message. It gives me chills reading over these verses. I praise God for making us unique in what we do to serve Him. Even in the little things, He makes us great for His glory.
The Lord does not see as man sees. He sees the heart, He knows the spiritual potential. He chose David, he chose Mary , both “young, ordinary, and unsuspecting,” and I would add “unlikely;” yet God had great plans for them. He has great plans for each of us (Jer. 29:11), and each of us would be considered unlikely recipients. His plans for each begin with the unlikely gift of an infant born in a manger who was in reality God’s very Son. Praise to Jesus Who left His glory in Heaven for us–for me–and for the victory he won. Praise to God Who sent His Son for us–for me–giving freely of His love and grace . Praise that He doesn’t see us–me–as unlikely, but works to make me what He sees I can and should be.
He picks us– the unlikely recipients– so that in the end, He may have all the glory! Praise Him for using ordinary people to do the extraordinary, not because of what we've done, but because He's just that good!!
Jesus, I pray You'd use us despite ourselves. Use us– flawed, messy, mistake-ridden mankin– to proclaim Your love, glory, and goodness to those who need to see it. May Your name be glorified! Amen.

I’m so glad that God has chosen us to do the works he has prepared in advanced. I’m even more thrilled that the connections he makes through history are intended to point directly to Jesus. God is an awesome story writer and he is truly working in my heart. I want to be the humble hearted servant!!! Praying for an opportunity to be just that today.
I just love that, Rachel! It's amazing how he makes connections through history and always points us to Jesus. What a good father we have!
xoxo-Kaitlin for She Reads Truth
Amen, Rachel! May we all be the humble-hearted servants God has called us to be today! Jesus, help us and make us to rely upon YOUR timing, not our own. Make us unafraid, knowing You've chosen us to do the good works You've planned in advance for us. May we be bold hearted, full of love and of Your Holy Spirit, going out to be Your Holy and Chosen people! We praise You for that, Lord Jesus! Amen.
–AnnaLee
I also love that! Whatever he does with us will point directly to Jesus. How beautiful is that? Thanks for this chica.
“and a little child shall lead them” isn’t it amazing that these words still ring true today!
So amazing!
Teach us to look at the ❤️
Our story is God’s story! This morning my heart is filled with gratitude for our Savior who looks at the heart and not the outward appearance. In a culture that puts so much focus on our outward “togetherness” I am thankful for our Savior who knows every thought and looks straight at the heart. He takes time with people. I am challenged this morning to do the same. Although I don’t have the power to look at someone’s heart to the extent that Jesus does, I do have the ability to listen and get to know people before judging them based on actions or appearance. Challenged this Christmas to listen and love well. Lord, make me a {woman} after your own heart.
Amen sister, I’m with ya there too.
Thank you, Father, for choosing to continue your story of infinite grace and love in my life and in the life of these my sisters!! We bless you God!
Praying for gods spirit to fall on me and my family members. We need this… Please, Lord, light your divine spark in our family.
“Infinite, and an infant”…we cannot begin to understand how God chooses people for certain tasks, or why He is guiding us through whatever hardships we’re going though. All we can do is trust that He has a divine plan! Thanks for reminding me of this through the reading!
Thanks for joining us today, Sarah! It's such a joy to have you in our community!

In reading Isaiah I pray through this advent season that I would not hide my face from him, but rather I would adore him and esteem him much. May the Spirit come powerfully on me (us) and bring us to deep worship for the One that was despised on our behalf.
I absolutely loved todays reading. The story of David instantly brings a smile to my face when I think about him. His heart, his courage, his will to live for God and through God astounds me every time. Our linage is all the same – we all come from God. In that, we are all brothers and sisters, even when the world is at odds and in sin. I couldn't be happier to be in that story. Thank you for the words this morning!
“…and the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David…” 1 Samuel 16:13
Lord, let your Spirit fall powerfully upon us!
AMEN
My story is God’s story… my messy, sinful story of years of darkness, abuse, and a divorce, where the hand of God reached down and chose me to be His anointed and redeemed. I’m now engaged to an incredible man of God who leads me, and loves and sees my heart, not just my outward appearance. Oh, the greatness of God!
Congradulations on your engagement and moving forward. God made you stronger through all of those things and He is with you!
I so appreciate all of the studies on this site. They are so encouraging!
But I think your reference may be a bit off for 1 Sam 11:7. It says “He took a pair of oxen, cut them into pieces, and sent the pieces by messengers throughout Israel, proclaiming, “This is what will be done to the oxen of anyone who does not follow Saul and Samuel.” Then the terror of the Lord fell on the people, and they came out together as one. (1 Samuel 11:7 NIV)”
But 1Sam 16:7 is the verse you quoted :)
I noticed that as well. The reference is correct in the header but incorrect in the text of the post (they both should be from I Sam. 16).
Whew! I was thinking maybe I was missing something! LOL There are two references that are not correct. The 1 Samuel 11:7 one and the 1 Samuel 11:12 one.
Anne, you are so right! Thanks for catching that! You're the best!
xoxo-Kaitlin for She Reads Truth
Oh my heart! So moved by this! What a magnificent creator we have!
Love in the scripture where it said the Spirit of the Lord RUSHED into David! May that same Spirit RUSH into me and change me for the better! All because of His coming, His giving, His ultimate sacrifice, I can have that same Spirit that David had, that Jesus promised WE could have. It would be a well springing up within us! Spring up, old well! Spring up!
Christmas amazes me, the wonder of it all and the glory in our midst. May we pause to give Him praise. ♥ http://www.hopeinthehealing.com/2014/12/03/what-c…
“Our creator always has a plan, one that takes a tiny seed and multiplies it abundantly— a plan that takes a tiny baby born of humble means and makes Him a King, the Savior of the world.” I’m thankful for his plan today, although I often can’t see it. Thankful that the Lord looks behind what I see.
This one gave me goosebumps to read. I am truly in awe of God this morning.
Beautiful!
A {wo}man after God's own heart. I love how our great God uses the ordinary, unsuspecting people – David and Mary – to accomplish His greatest plans. Including the birth and life of His Son, our Savior and Hope.
Humbled. Praying that I can grow to be a woman after God's own heart.
Yes, Beverly. Me, too. Lord Jesus, conform us all to Your image as we run after Your own heart. Strengthen and calm us with Your strength and Your peace; use us in ways we could never fully fathom, as You always have. We praise You for that, Lord Jesus. Amen.
Be blessed, Beverly. You are so very loved and cherished. xx
–AnnaLee
He has a plan. These words bring such warmth to my heart this morning because it just doesn’t make sense to think that the God of all creation has a plan that includes me – a lowly human being with no confidence or security in self -. Even still, God can see more. God can see oh so much more in us all ladies. Just as God had a Devine plan for a young virgin and a man of no significance, God has a plan for each and every one of your lives. If that isn’t a much needed dose of hope, as in a dose of caffeine to a tired and worn down soul, I don’t know what is?
“Infant to infinite”
Nothing more needs to be said. Thank you, Lord. Thank you for looking deeper than the surface of our hearts. Thank you for digging deeper. Thank you for seeing the potential in us all even when we can’t see it.
Much love ladies
-R
Love this, Renee. Thankful for this sweet reminder of His sovereign plan. Grateful for you!
xoxo-Kaitlin for She Reads Truth
Amen, Renee. " Thank you, Lord. Thank you for looking deeper than the surface of our hearts. Thank you for digging deeper. Thank you for seeing the potential in us all even when we can't see it."
All God sees when He looks at us is Christ. Christ's is the image we are being conformed to daily; we are being sanctified to be used more and more by God for His purposes, just as Christ was perfectly, obediently used for God's will. We see ourselves; God sees Christ. Jesus, show us how You see us. When we feel worthless or afraid, remind us of who we really are: saints clothed in Your righteousness alone. We praise You for that, Lord Jesus. Amen.
–AnnaLee
I am in awe of how much God loves us…so much so that God became human so that us humans can become eternal like God (in his image). It’s so big, so beyond what our minds can fathom, so undeserved, yet He did it anyway and planned it from the beginning! Our God is an AWESOME God, “the wonder of Christmas” for sure!!! Lord forgive me that I often lose sight of your greatness and thank you that no matter how big you are you love me anyway. This study has again reminded me. Thank you SRT. x
Yes. Jesus loves us, flawed mankind, so much, that He used flawed mankind to give birth to His spotless lamb. He is the Promise-Maker, the Promise-Keeper, and the Promise-Fulfillment; He made a promise to us, has kept every one of His promises– especially this one of a Messiah– to us, and has fulfilled the promise for us. It has nothing more to do with us than what He wanted it to. He uses us, but nothing has ever relied upon us. Praise Him for that!! Jesus, remind us all today that though you use us, success does not ride on our actions or righteousness, but on Yours alone. I thank You and praise You for that, Lord Jesus! Keep us obedient to Your will for our lives! Amen.
God is not like me only bigger.
God is holy. God is other. God is supreme. God is marvelous and miraculous. His plan is wider and more involved that i can even get my brain to fathom.
from the beginning He has had this plan of salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ in mind.
today, I'm reminded how awesome God is and how small i am. "Oh, the wonder of Christmas!"
"God is not like me only bigger", So true! I didn't even realize I thought this way – because, after all, I am made in His image. But the reverse is so not true…. Thank you for this jolting thought this morning. Yes, the wonder of Christmas…..
Today, my daily reading was on prophecy in Daniel 11. One thing I kept picking up on was the phrase "at the appointed time" or just "appointed time" by itself. Reading this has also shown me that it was all in God's "appointed time" and through God's anointed people that the Messiah came. He came not a moment too early or late; He was right on time, and always is on time. Oh, that we would trust in the timing– as well as accepting and loving the people– God has placed in our lives! As you said, "from the beginning He has had this plan of salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ in mind." He knew from the very beginning what, when, where, why, and how His plan for redemption would happen, and He has now decided to use His church for everything else He has planned! Jesus, help us to trust in You for all we need; help us to trust that you have every detail mapped out, and are in control of every second of our lives! Let that cause us to rest in Your Goodness. In Jesus' name, Amen!
–AnnaLee
The thread of "the Lord looks on the inside" runs through today's readings (1 Sam 11:7, Is 11:3, Is 53:2). I can't help but wonder if I would have accepted the baby born to Mary as the Messiah. I must confess that I am quick to form judgements and opinions based on what I see on the surface. Today I am reminded to stop and look deeper. "With righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth" (Is 11:4).
Infinite and an infant. Wow. So much to ponder. Amazing. Thank you, Debbie!
Thank God that he is not a “surely” God!
Our creator always has a plan, one that takes a tiny seed and multiplies it abundantly— a plan that takes a tiny baby born of humble means and makes Him a King, the Savior of the world.
Love that God has a plan and needed to read this today x
That was my favorite quote today as well. I am always needing a reminder that He has a plan, and the amazing thing to me, I’m a part of that plan.
Amen Tara and Sarah (look at that! You guys rhyme! haha)! Knowing that our Lord is both the Sovereign, Infinite, Plan-creating Lord God and also a Humble, Loving, having "no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him" Jesus Christ, is amazing and beautiful. Jesus, the fact that You are God, and that You love us, and are for us take my breath away! Because of this, we know we can trust You in all things, knowing that all we can do is to do is our very best, and to give You the rest. We praise You for that, Lord Jesus, Father God! Amen!
–AnnaLee
That last quote is really amazing. “Infinite, and an infant.” Praise be to God that he has come into the world. He came just as we did to live as a human, because of his love. With a love like that, how could we ever say no?
I love that too, Sarah! Such an amazing love. We are thrilled to have you in our community!
xoxo-Kaitlin for She Reads Truth
Right? It knocked my socks off, too. "Eternal, and yet born of a woman. Almighty, and yet hanging on a woman’s breast." That idea of God so humbling Himself– truly, humiliating Himself, to become man– is one that fills me with awe, with humility, and with praise. Hallelujah, to our Lord and King! What a beautiful, great, amazing love! xx
Jesus, let us fix our eyes on You and Your Humble, Holy, Beautiful ways today. We praise You for that, Father God. Amen.
Your sister,
AnnaLee
