Psalms 30–34

Open Your Bible

Psalm 30:1-12, Psalm 31:1-24, Psalm 32:1-11, Psalm 33:1-22, Psalm 34:1-22

The sunrise is a call to worship. Let’s picture it together.

First, there is darkness, accompanied by silent stillness. The world sleeps to the hum of a quiet lullaby. But as light begins to break through, first in pin holes, then in streaks, there is sound. Creation is an orchestra comprised of a thousand instruments. Our Creator is our conductor, daily raising His baton to call us to rejoice.

Rejoice in who He is…
In what He’s done…
In all He’s promised…

Insects greet the morning with stringed instruments strapped to tiny hind legs. Birds make up the woodwinds. They gather on branches and electric lines; their tiny bird hearts burst with praise. Dogs bark. Cattle moo. Babies call for their mamas.

This is not idle noise. It’s the beautiful sounds of the ones God made waking up to the things He made us for. Simply put, we were meant for rejoicing.

This is one of the many drumbeats that thump beautifully throughout the psalms. Among other things, these inspired words are meant to call us to worship the Lord, to stir our affections toward Him, and to strike our vocal chords to sing songs of His great love.

Psalm 33 begins like a sunrise…

Rejoice in the LORD, you righteous ones.
—Psalm 33:1

God’s people are called to worship so often in Psalms (not to mention in the whole of Scripture) that this sentiment might seem unremarkable at first glance, but the psalmist’s point is the point of our lives. Righteousness redirects our rejoicing. Both the righteous and unrighteous will spend our days in worship, but who will we celebrate? Who will we sing to? Who or what will lift our eyes off our navels and onto someone greater? There are nearly endless options but only One deserving.

Praise is a right response to a righteous God. The call of this psalm, of every psalm—the call of this season, of every season—is for our hearts to rejoice in the righteous One, who right this very moment is setting everything that is wrong back to right.

After spending countless penstrokes calling God’s people to praise the Lord in any way possible—with the lyre (v.2), on the strings (v.3), with a joyful shout (v.3)—the psalmist again reminds us: This is what we were made for. The Lord is worthy of our worship every sunrise, sunset, and moment in between.

“For our hearts rejoice in him because we trust in his holy name” (v.21). You can repeat the daily rhythm of creation any time, any place.

Sit in stillness for a moment. Turn down the volume of your life. Let your heart go quiet within you. Then, think about the Lord. His name. His face. His grace! Like the sun rising slowly on the horizon, let His praise bubble up inside your soul. Then let it rise, higher still, brighter still, louder still.

Today and tomorrow and every day until glory, do what you were made to do.

Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous ones…For our hearts rejoice in him because we trust his holy name.
—Psalm 33:1, 21

  12. GramsieSue says:

Ladies, I know I’ve been silent for a while. And I’m behind in the readings.
It’s been a rough few months.
Our business is shaky at best.
And now the news we have dreaded came this week.
    The brain tumor is back…
Steve and I are in shock. He’s been doing so well. It’s been 4 yrs since his first diagnosis.
The doctor doesn’t recommend surgery as
    1) he could lose vision
    2) they can’t get it all so then it could still spread.
    Chemo isn’t an option.
    Radiation might help.
    .
Very discouraging to say the least.
    .
I have made appointments with our integrative oncologist and the local integrative doctor. Praying they have some good options that will zap this nasty tumor.
    .
And it’s a very stressful situation in our Dental Lab right now with several key managers turning in resignations.
    .
I am trying to stay focused on God and not the storm!
I have seen Him in other storms; He will be here in this one as well.
Extra prayers appreciated from you special ladies! ❤️

Oh Sue, my heart dropped and was sick at this. I didn’t realize you were still struggling with the business either. But the diagnosis with Steve must have floored you! I am praying for you daily here on out my sweet friend. We will gather around and hold up your arms. Be sure to let friends and family know how to help you with other needs so you can focus on these two things. It will be a blessing to them to be able to serve and help you! Please don’t think it will be a bother. You have to have your worries to those and not household and yard and things like that. Oh I wish I could come give you a hug…and just let you talk. Please share on the FB page too whenever you just want to share your thoughts and frustrations, and fears. It is okay to have doubts, and to question God..But to stay with him. He will be with you in this fire.

I have missed you and I pray with you that the medical teams can put their heads together, that God will grant them the wisdom, knowledge, and intuition to find a radical treatment that will be successful in ‘zapping’ that tumor! You are on the Facebook page Rhonda oversees, right? If so, I will message you soon! Peace, hugs, love, and prayers!!! ❤❤❤

  14. Lanie H says:

oh so many thoughts and feels today. February 23 is the day I lost my dad, the day I likely conceived my first child (lost in miscarriage) and then the likely day I conceived my sweet Iris, and the day I dedicated her at church last year. it is truly the day the Lord turned my lament into dancing, removed my sack cloth, and clothed me with gladness. it is also the time of year of Jewish purim, which is the day in Esther when God turned their weeping into rejoicing! I found in my phone where I had saved psalm 34:18 while I was going through the miscarriage. It was humbling because not only should I be praising God for what he has done for me, but who He is! There is a scene in the chosen at passover when they are changing, it would have been enough if…and I had to remind myself today it would have been enough even if he hadn’t redeemed my specific situation, but he did. And his praise SHOULD always be on my lips.

    1. Searching says:

Thank you, Lanie, for sharing this ❤️

    2. Rhonda J. says:

      Yes, thank you for sharing!

    3. Wendy B says:

    4. Cee Gee says:

“…it would have been enough even if he hadn’t redeemed my specific situation, but he did. And his praise SHOULD always be on my lips.” Beautiful!!! ❤
      .
Lanie, little sister, what a precious and most encouraging testimony! Thank you so much for sharing your heart ‘feels’ with your sisters here. What a blessing to read your words this morning! Love and hugs to you and little Iris! ❤❤❤

  15. Alayna P. says:

The verse I chose today is Psalm 31:15: “My times are in Your hands”. It feels especially poignant to me right now. I don’t always feel steady, and there’s a lot I can’t control, but this verse reminds me that my life and what’s ahead aren’t slipping through my fingers, they’re being held by God ❤️

    1. Danielle Hawkins says:

Alayna, thank you. Your words feel meant for me.

    2. Indiana Elaine says:

That verse was very special to me when it took over a year to diagnose my thyroid disease. The lord led me to a very special endocrinologist whom I’ve been with for over 30 years. She has been an amazing Dr who also struggled with thyroid issues.

  17. Mercy says:

Hi ladies, I come in to ask for your prayers over my daughter who is fighting against a high fever and a bad cough. She didn’t take medicine well and was fussing so much. And this put my husband in such a bad mood because she was fussing a lot. He is behind with his graduate schoolwork (deadline is every week and always late because of ADHD and procrastination and hating every minute of doing school work), and he resented me and started to compare the sacrifice he made versus I made for our family. I kept quiet and tried to go through these psalms and tried to nurse my child back to health. I would appreciate your prayers for peace in our home and good recovery for my youngest child. Thank you she’s. Psalm 34 is my favorite, and I was very happy to read it today. There was a song I used to sing in worship from this psalm. Truly the Word of God brings hope to a weary soul. Thank you she’s. Be blessed dear sisters.

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Oh dear Mercy…I feel you! We just had a row..over groceries. (every week), so I CAN”T imagine with 3 kids, 1 sick, and your career/job, and his school! My word this year is Peace..specifically for what your asking for. So I am going to think of you all day and pray for peace in your home, and of course for healing for your baby girl. And praying the other two don’t get it. It really is so challenging when our young ones are sick. They don’t quite understand why they feel so awful and want mom’s full attention.

      1. Lanie H says:

Prayers Mercy! I just got my first (that I can remember) sorry from my husband in 5 years of marriage. we got in am argument, similar to yours and I went to bed in prayer, and woke up in prayer and just asked the Lord to speak to him, mostly helped me to keep my big mouth shut. the apology was the most heartfelt thing I have ever heard from my husband and restored my soul. I’m praying the same for you!

    2. Tina says:

Got you and yours in my prayers dear Mercy!
Hang in there, for our God is with you as you negotiate these situations.. love you ..❤️

    3. Tami says:

I am praying Mercy! There is nothing worse than a sick child and a whiny husband!

      1. Rhonda J. says:

that made me laugh out loud…truth.

    4. Danielle B says:

Lifting you and your little in prayers.

    5. Cee Gee says:

Mercy, dear sister, I am praying for really quick recovery for your sweet daughter and heart examination for your husband. How wise of you to hold your tongue rather than get caught up in his mood. Prayers this illness stops with this 1 child! ❤
      .
Tip: When I feel backed into a corner, I have started to hum or sing a favorite worship song or recite a simpke and neaningpful Bible verse repeatedly to calm my spirit since I am not in the frame of mind to focus on Scripture reading until I am calm. Hugs little sister! ❤❤❤

    6. Searching says:

Joining in prayer for your daughter, husband and marriage, sister! ❤️❤️❤️ proud of you for staying out of the situation today.

    7. Susan Burley says:

    8. Wendy B says:

Have prayed for all of these❤️

  18. Wendy B says:

Rejoice in the LORD, you righteous ones.
    —Psalm 33:1

Praise the Lord, we were made to worship!
Such a great devotional – thank you Erin. I love being outside to walk; we have amazing, beautiful, scenic river valley trails in our city and over the years I have walked corner to corner, end to end on almost every one. I love the visuals that Erin described and it feels as if she put words to the thoughts that run thru my mind as I walk. It is a calming, serene, creation filled silence and I have such gratitude and praise when I take it all in. The sunshine on my face and both the silence and sounds of creation are heartfilling. God’s creation just perpetuates praise.

Psalm 30 deeply resonates with me and reflects where I was at 4 years ago facing life threatening illness. I cried, I pleaded, I prayed, hallucinations of hell left me in the depths of such terror. The physical and emotional toll that cancer took on my body left me a shell of myself in every way but the Lord delivered me and although slow and not there yet, healing has come. It is a miracle and I can’t help but praise Him and rejoice.

‘Lord my God, I cried to you for help, and you healed me. Lord, you brought me up from Sheol; you spared me from among those going down to the Pit. Sing to the Lord, you his faithful ones, and praise his holy name. Psalm 30 2-4.

Thanks be to God. I love this that Erin shared. He is faithful. Yes, lets rejoice.

    Rejoice in who He is…
    In what He’s done…
    In all He’s promised…

    1. Grammie D says:

Thanks for sharing your story. Praise God for your healing

    2. Mercy says:

      This is so good.❤️

    3. Rhonda J. says:

Yes! Keep sharing your story! There are always new people to hear it! It’s scary how we can be left so helpless, but God knows where we are always. I know exactly “feeling like a shell of myself.,” (Although I know it could be even worse).
So grateful you have gotten continued good reports.

    4. Tina says:

Rejoicing with you, Wendy.. He is who He says He is for sure, and for those of us that have been on the receiving end of His goodness and grace.. rejoicing is our middle name!!!!❤️

    5. Tami says:

Wow Wendy – what a testimony! Praise God for your healing.

    6. Cee Gee says:

      Praise God! ❤

  19. Leslie Gray says:

I love the beautiful picture that this devotional painted. What really stood out to me in the scripture today was how much David talked about “the fear of the Lord” and what comes to those who have fear of the Lord.

In Psalm 31:19 it says His goodness is great and laid up for those who fear Him.
Psalm 33:18 says His eye is on those who fear Him!
Psalm 34:7 says the angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him and delivers them.
34:9 says there is no want for those who fear Him!
And in 34:13-14 it even teaches us what fear of the Lord looks like: keep your tongue from evil, your lips from speaking deceit, depart from evil and do good, seek peace and pursue it. These are convicting!!

I went and looked at another devotion on the fear of the Lord and here is what it said: “The Hebrew word for “fear” here is “yirah,” which encompasses reverence, awe, and respect. It’s not about cowering in terror, but about recognizing God’s greatness and our proper place in relation to Him. It’s the kind of fear that draws us closer, not drives us away.”

Oh how the Church today needs the fear of the Lord back! It will draw us closer to Him! It has been my own personal prayer that He would give me the fear of the Lord each day. Oh how we need the reverence, the awe and wonder, the SUBMISSION AND OBEDIENCE, the recognition of our proper place in relation to Him. How much more effective we would be as the Church with fear of the Lord restored!

I pray that fear of the Lord returns to each and every heart of every follower of Christ!

    1. Wendy B says:

Amen! We SO need that fear back. Love your reflections and thoughts. Thank you❤️

      1. Rhonda J. says:

Yes, agree! I have said for decades, that I miss the reverence we used to have for God! And the fear of God..even to the yes..fear him in a way that we know he is God and we are not. A healthy fear. I don’t think there is anything wrong with that. I feared my dad if I knew I deserved it, but didn’t want to get caught. We kinda need that! He is our Creator after all.

Leslie- love this that you put-
34:13-14 it even teaches us what fear of the Lord looks like: keep your tongue from evil, your lips from speaking deceit, depart from evil and do good, seek peace and pursue it.

  20. DW says:

I absolutely love the Psalms and agree that it’s been hard to read through them so fast so I’ve come up with something that has helped me and thought it might encourage some others. I have the reading guide, so I first just read through all of the psalms straight through circling any of the verses that pop out to me personally. Usually there are many of those-ha! Then I go back to all those verses and turn them into prayers to the Lord. As I do that usually one or two will pop out to me and those will be the verses that I focus on for the day. This has helped to narrow it down some. Even if you don’t have the reading guide, you could do that in your Bible or in a journal or notepad. Just thought I’d pass that idea on. Psalm 33 and 34 are 2 of my favorite Psalms with so many key verses.
I am always grateful for the writers being so real and down to earth with their feelings and cries to the Lord and how the Psalms constantly remind us of his faithfulness amidst all the situations presented there, just like He is in all of ours today.

    1. Gwineth52 says:

What lovely ideas, DW! You inspire us to aspire!!

    2. Tina says:

  21. Cheryl Blow says:

Beautiful! Ps 34:4. “ I sought the Lord and He answered me and delivered me from all my fears.” This verse has been prayer for me for most of my all of my adult life. He is faithful! We can trust Him. We can rejoice in Him because we trust in His Holy name! Ps 33:21

Our only response is praise! Thankful for another day and that He is always faithful!

    Praise the Lord, Hallelujah!!

    1. Cee Gee says:

So many songs come to mind with these Psalms – makes sense, right?!
This one makes me think of the song by Elevation.
“I sought the LORD and He heard and he answered…that’s why I trust Him… that’s why I trust in God… ❤

      1. Rhonda J. says:

Yep, exactly the song I thought of! “Trust in God!” A favorite at jail!!

Oh the sounds of a new day dawning. Thank you JESUS! I LOVE mornings! I love to be the first one up so I don’t have any distractions or interruptions (although I DO love it when my daughter joins me). The SUNRISE is a call to worship! During my dark days at the place I once called home. I LOVED to see the sunrise giving me hope to face another day. Praying, crying, pleading, rejoicing, all-of-it! AND I know my JESUS heard me!

    1. Cee Gee says:

      ❤❤❤

    2. Rhonda J. says:

Yes, looking back and thinking of those days are good for us, and help us to appreciate how he got us through it, and the blessing we have now that we may take for granted on a normal day!!

I have my bird seed in our bougainvillea (the Cardinals love the hiding coverage) on our front deck, yet I can see them write inside the window and they come daily to our little deck restaurant and sing to me! Ya’ll probably remember when I would do my daily prayers at the dock and see manatee and dolphins even. Unfortunately I haven’t done that in the last year. I need to start back! Oh the beauty God gives us!!

    3. Tina says:

      ❤️❤️

    4. Wendy B says:

I love the silence of the early morning as well. Seeing the sun rise brings such hope for a new day❤️

ERIN, what beautiful images and reminders to start our day!
“This is not idle noise. …

Praise is a right response to a righteous God. The call of this psalm, of every psalm—the call of this season, of every season—is for our hearts to rejoice in the righteous One, who right this very moment is setting everything that is wrong back to right.” ERIN DAVIS ❤
    ✨✨✨
    Psalm 32:11-

Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, you righteous ones; shout for joy, all you upright in heart.
    .
All of nature praises, as Erin mentioned but the “RIGHTEOUS” are called to praise God. What makes us righteous?
    2 Corinthians 5:21 NIV-

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
    ✨✨✨
The “RIGHTEOUS” are called to praise. Enduring Word Study Bible says this on 2 Corinthians 5:21-
“Jesus took our sin but gave us His righteousness. Our sins were on Jesus, and His righteousness is on us.”
    ✨✨✨
So… we rejoice; we PRAISE with JOY in our hearts!

  26. Rhonda J says:

Oh these Psalms are so wonderful. My soul IS connecting to the Psalms! (even at the rabbit pace, many at once! But that they have the same theme streaming through is impactful, and good for memorizing the key phrases in our hearts for the times we need them (which is ongoing!)!
I love the word JOY! It was my word of the year about 4 years ago. I had never picked a theme word before!! And THEN…it was indeed EVERYWHERE!!! And it truly brought joy to my soul. My pain was bad, I was sidetracked from all my daily activities that brought me joy. I think we think of enemies as people against us. But we have those enemies of fear, shame, unforgiveness..and Pain. Sickness, Illness, and devastating prognosis. These weigh our hearts down. All of our joys and activities change. Our future changes in an instant. Isolation comes. Depression comes. Loss of old life settles over heavily!!
But God—he is there for those with chronic issues. And in our suffering he still brings a joy, in a different way. We put our reliance on him to get us through the day. We cry out for healing, knowing is able, and upset when it doesn’t happen, yet we know it is in His will and timing, and he has not forsaken us!! No matter WHAT we go through, when we are scared and seeking….He IS there. And we can be assured that our mourning will turn to joy…even when we have to force it! Fake it til you make it used to be the phrase. But it is praising when we don’t want to. Talking to him in our confusion. Being in the word, and fasting and fervent prayer. Waking up our soul…steadfast and strong!! Crying out to our Abba Father. Would he give a stone to his hungry child? No..he gives us nutrients for our growth. Little by little so we stay close to him. When we get quick healing, how quickly we run back to our OWN happiness. But through our longing we stay close. AND that is a blessing!! Gotta go—!!! 1. Rhonda J. says:

Thank you Cee Gee! We are just starting a new study by Max Lucado (new as in starting today) called “Unshakeable Hope!” I like that it has a weekly video to watch and then questions to discuss. (no reading! Because of this SRT study, and our Lent study at jail, and then my book study by Liza Turkuerst “What Happens When WomEn Say Yes to God!!” (really, really good!)). WOOOO..I should be so holy!! lol. But of course…not. :)

        1. Cee Gee says:

I understand! I’m trying to remember if I did that one. I did one on prayer (by Max) several years ago.

  27. Foster Mama says:

I commend each of you who were able to narrow down your day’s verses; I started with:

31:7 I will rejoice and be glad in your faithful love because you have seen my affliction.
You know the troubles of my soul

    **

    **
33:20 We wait for the Lord;he is our help and shield.
21 For our hearts rejoice in him
because we trust in his holy name.

22 May your faithful love rest on us, Lord, for we put our hope in you
    **

34:4 I sought the Lord, and he answered me and rescued me from all my fears.x

5 Those who look to him are radiant with joy; their faces will never be ashamed.

    ….
How happy is the person who takes refuge in him!ad

9 You who are his holy ones, fear the Lord, for those who fear him lack nothing.

    ***
….but now admit there are, praise Jesus ❤️, too many more….perhaps the entirety of Psalm 33.

    **

Please continue to bring my foster son before the throne,…each day, God is calling on me to surrender to Him and each day, a new detail emerges that threatens to shake me….

    Love to all❤️

What a beautiful devotional Erin Davis! Thank you for all the beautiful word pictures.
I read this as we are arriving at our conference, a day late due to the blizzard, but arriving- praise the Lord!
I’ve watched the sunrise on our drive, very fitting for our readings today.
So much good stuff in the psalms today, but agreed- going through much to quickly!
Two things stand out that are repeated over & over again – Gods unfailing love and our call to rejoice.
My two verses for today –
•Psalm 32:10 – Many are the woes of the wicked, but the Lords unfailing love surrounds the one who trust him.
•Psalm 42:11. – Rejoice in the Lord and be glad, you righteous; sing all you who are upright in heart.

  47. Sally B. says:

Sunrises are indeed my favorite time to praise and worship the Lord! Especially when he paints the sky with colors unavailable to the human brush.
These Psalms, again, reminded me of Proverbs. Here’s how we live our most joyful, productive lives – by praising and fearing the Lord.
“We wait for the Lord; He is our help and shield. For our hearts rejoice in Him because we trust in His holy name.” Ps 33:20-21

    1. AG says:

I agree! Sunrises are so special – I love to sit and do my devotional at sunrise

    2. Wendy B says:

Yes! A sunrise is my favorite too and such a vivid, clear reminder that our God reigns above it all ❤️

  48. Tina says:

Psalm 30 was a real heart beating favorite in the early days of profound loss.
    .
I will exhale you, Lord, because you have lifted me..
Oh gosh,, did I pray these words daily..
    .
Lord my God, I cried to you for help,
    Oh boy, did I..
    .
Lord, you brought me up from Sheol, from going to the pit..
You rescued me from reaching for the drink, the tablets, the wanting to end it all..
    .
    You saved me!
    .
I sang praises, I fell, you picked me up, I sang praise some more, you picked me up..
    .
Weeping, oh boy, weeping, may last the night..
    Felt like forever,
    .
But there is promised joy in the morning..
Morning did come, today is another of those mornings, wrapped in His goodness and love and wholesome joy of the Lord..
    .
You turned my lament.. my grief and absolute inconsolable sorrow.. into dancing..
Dancing, because you showed me, in your goodness and gracious love, where my beloved now lived, happy and free..
    .
So yes, I can sing to you, Lord God, and not be silent.
    .
Lord, my God, I WILL PRAISE YOU FOREVER.
    .
    For always.
    .
    Always.
    .
Tears flow freely in my remembering,
Yes, this Psalm holds a special place in my heart, always will!
    .
    BUT GOD.
    .
    AMEN.
    .
    .
Happy Tuesday, dear hearts, covered in much love and prayers..❤️❤️❤️

    1. Pam Fite says:

Happy Tuesday to you too Tina! Thank you for sharing your story and how the Lord brought you through it!

    2. Foster Mama says:

      ❤️❤️

    3. Rhonda J. says:

We think we will never see the joy again. That the dark will shut out any light. We stay prostrate and can barely make it up. But God….
He is good, and he surrounds and gives us what we need to slowly balm our hearts, the healing slow and needed.
Joy in the morning, dancing from lame, flowers blooming in our dessert heart. Oh, how easy it would have been to turn to drink or pills, or other quick to ease bandaids. But true, deep surgery is needed on the open wounds. So grateful you ran to the church and stayed there in your grief and heartbreak. And WE are needed to meet others in the turbulent, weak times. Our story is valuable to speak volumes. He uses his people to minister to others! Christians and unsaved alike!!

Any thoughts on retirement directions, or are you just living in the unhurried?! And Romeo sightings? We are praying for you!

    4. Wendy B says:

Thank you for sharing your heart and the Lord’s work in your life in such profound loss❤️

    5. Tami says:

Hi Tina – as always your sharing is so beautiful! I’m just wondering if you were a Christian before or if it was your loss that brought you to the Lord? Either way hearing how you lived/live out your faith is such an inspiration. Like Rhonda said, your story is so valuable to Christians and non-Christians alike. Thank you sister!

    6. Cee Gee says:
