Psalm 116:1-19, John 3:14-21, Colossians 1:9-14

We’re halfway through This Is the Old Testament, our thematic overview of the Old Testament. Each day we’ll read a thematic selection from a different book of the Bible, along with supplemental passages that show how the theme of that day’s main reading is found throughout Scripture. We’ll also read a brief summary of each book and a reflection on how the book fits into the larger story of Scripture. This week, we’ll finish our look at the books of Wisdom Literature and begin the last sections of the Old Testament, the Major and Minor Prophets.

The Book of Psalms: The book of Psalms is a collection of 150 musical poems and prayers written by David and others that represent the full range of human emotion in worshiping God.

How Psalms Fits Into the Story: The Psalms are deeply relational and give us a window into who God is, how He acts, and how His people can respond. The struggle to understand how God’s attributes—particularly His sovereignty and goodness—relate to life experiences is a major theme throughout the Psalms. These words, often in the form of prayers, were written by people who had not lost their faith in God as they navigated the mountaintops and valleys of life. Like us, they wrestled with how God was dealing with them both personally and as a community.

Reflection Questions:
1. Do you find it easier to pray or worship God in certain moods or seasons? How do the emotions conveyed in Psalm 116 influence your understanding of what you can bring to God?
2. How does today’s reading shape your understanding of the story of redemption?

Take time to reflect on your responses and share what you are learning with others in the community in the comments.

Psalm 116:2 Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live.
I find myself asking for God’s grace and guidance in times of struggle. During the happiest of days I try to pause to thank God, but these are the days I can take for granted and forget to pour out my thankfulness

More often I find it easier to worship when life is feeling good and all is going well, Psalm 116 just reminds me that I can bring every single emotion Im feeling to God. The psalmist truly honestly shows us that God welcomes both our praise and our struggles. Just when God was saving the psalmist, He has ultimately rescued us through the death of Christ His one and only Son. It reminds me that my Fathers heart has always been to save, restore, and draw His people closer to Him.

    Reflection Questions:
    1. Do you find it easier to pray or worship God in certain moods or seasons?
Yes, of course I hate to say it…but I find it easier to pray when I’m desperate and especially when I’m in trouble and when my OCD will not give me even a hint of peace.
How do the emotions conveyed in Psalm 116 influence your understanding of what you can bring to God?
We have to give thanks to our God in all seasons. He does so much for us all the time even when we don’t see it. We should praise Him, thank Him, and love Him.
    2. How does today’s reading shape your understanding of the story of redemption?
Give praise to His name. Be strong and courageous because He is with me/us always whether I’m/any of us are in trouble or not.

Happy Monday ladies. I am guilty of praying more during hard times and forgetting when things are good. Learning to just be able to speak with the lord vs. what sometimes feels like begging was hard for me. Just last week I had a friend I am not super familiar with ask if she could stay the night with me as she was passing through town. I agreed but wished I would have come up with an excuse to say no. I am not super familiar with her and it was a work night and I start work at 6 AM. I thought I dont want to pray that she doesn’t come, but if I am supposed to be welcoming friend right now that it will be an easy and comfortable thing for me to do.

Hi She’s! I am asking for prayers for my son (he’s 46). I received a call from my daughter-in-love a little bit ago and he has been rushed to the hospital with numbness on his face and brain fog. He is at the hospital and they are doing tests right now. I live 3 hours away and we are getting ready to travel to see him now. Please pray for the doctors, nurses and anyone who is caring for him. Please pray for my daughter in love and our two grandsons (14 and 17). And also journey mercies as we travel. Thank you so much!!

My experience with the psalms is that they give words to the depths of my emotions in seasons of joy and in seasons of great hardship. “This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him“. I love how the Lord meets us in our very real moments throughout life, and this emphasizes to me again the fact that God wants to have relationship with his people, and he solidified that by providing a way through the salvation work of Jesus Christ! Praise God for his heart towards us!

Happy Monday sweeties. Joining you this morning on the comments. Most of you know I’m doing the Morning and Dancing Study again with a friend using the study guide. Hope your all enjoying your Summer so far. I wanted to come here today for two prayer request for my children. My daughter as a Zoom pre interview for an on campus job at the University that she will be attending in the Fall. She’s nervous as she’s never really had a job. So lots of changes for her this fall. My son….oh my sweet boy has had yet another life altering situation. Actually two at the same time.
Please pray as he as an in-person counseling appointment with a Christian counselor. Please pray the counselor would be a “good fit” ALSO my son is going to address that he continues to be unemployed and hoping the counselor would consider a good “pay scale” since he’s unemployed. Thank you sweeties. My heart is aching, BUT GOD sees us!!

    1. Tami says:

Praying Mari V! It’s so hard when our kids are struggling.

    4. Jane K says:

Praying for your daughter and son. May God pour out His favor on them both.

  15. Jane K says:

I fell in love with the Psalms more after our last study of Psalms. Psalm 116:7 “Return to your rest, my soul, for the LORD has been good to you,” reminds me of Psalm 42:5 “Why are you downcast, oh my soul, why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” These verses remind me to use positive self talk, the Bible, to talk to my soul and to remember to put all my faith and trust in him. There’s a little song I learned a long time ago for Psalm 42:5 and I sing it whenever I feel that pit of fear in my soul. It helps to center me and align my soul with Him.

    1. Tami says:

      Oh share the song please:)

      1. Jane K says:

Tami, the words are Psalm 42:5, but I’ve tried finding the song I sing and I haven’t been able to find it. It was part of a Bible study I did a long time ago, and every lesson incorporated a song from scripture.

  16. Cheryl Blow says:

I just love that we cry out, He hears! Depending on the season, I may cry out or worshipping may be easier. No matter the season, offering up a sacrifice of praise even though it is difficult, will change my perspective and the position of my heart!

Col 1:13-14 is the verse of the day for me!

    Praying for all!

  17. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

I had my whole family with me on Saturday evening. It was such a joy to all be together. My oldest was here from RI. I invited him to go to church with me on Sunday. He gave a flat out “no”. “Is it not your thing” I asked. He replied, “I don’t want to go”….It was the way he said it and his tone that really saddened my heart, he seems so hardened. As I read John 2:19 today, I thought of him – “This is the verdict: “Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.” …not that he is an evil person, but I think he enjoys his life without Jesus because then he can live as he pleases without guilt. My heart aches for my two prodigals.

    1. Rhonda J. says:

It’s true, that’s the reason. We don’t call it evil, but they think they don’t need “our fairytale.” They are happy living their life. I know it is sad, as all of us as mothers that our children float away and then sometimes, flat out deny God. But he will still know exactly what they need, never lose sight of that mothers. It may be hard to watch it, but I just remember myself and others that I never thought it could see a turn around! And Paul..our killer of the faith, until..the light pierced him..! Amen.

    2. Marie S says:

Be encoured, do not loose hope. My two adult daughters stepped away from God for many, many years but have come back are are both, as Grandmother’s, are steadfast in their service to their Lord and Saviour. Now, prayers are extended
to their children and their children. Trust our God to call each of our descendants. He is faithful.

    3. Tami says:

Praying for your sons Sharon. I have shared in the past that it took til I was in my 40s to turn to God. I know it probably broke my mother’s heart… I also know I am a believer now because the seeds she planted and the prayers she prayed. God will turn them around in due time. But I know the waiting is hard!

    4. searching says:

Praying for your sons, Sharon. And for you, the flat rejection hurt me to read it, so I can’t imagine how you felt.

    5. B says:

My heart hurts for your mama’s heart.
Praying through our prodigal list each week and patiently/not patiently hoping to hear some praise reports.

      1. Indiana Elaine says:

My son and wife were in Church again this past Sunday, second time since we started our list. I found out today that their daughter is going to a Christian camp next week. That is something I have been praying for that one of her friends would invite her to a youth group. I hope and pray she meets Jesus at camp next week.

I Love to praise him with timbre and dancing!! Nothing is more fun to sway and move, clap and jump for joy (although my feet don’t leave the ground like they do in my mind :/ )! Ya’ll will not be surprised that I have to get the end aisle seat so I don’t slap a person next to me!! When my hubby is not with me I move to the front row with open seats, lol! As I’m getting older, leaning into God more and more becomes easier and more natural almost. I know how much I need Him in every situation, good and bad. Trusting & praying to you Him is a requirement of life, no matter what. And worshipping Him as well.

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Yes, I agree. When people would refer to “walking in the Spirit!” it would baffle me, but now it IS what happens. I know him well. It is the ongoing act of Sanctification. There is a song that comes to mind…but I can’t grasp it..(leave it to Cee Gee in a bit)

  22. Kathy says:

Pray and worship does seem to be easier in seasons of calm and good things happening. But it is so easy to become complacent and comfortable during those times. My prayer and worship become routine. I can honestly say that it has been in the hard, the trials, the seasons of struggle that I experience the deepest and most meaningful times of worship and prayer.
This made me think of James 1:2-4.
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be pure and complete, not lacking anything.”

    1. Rhonda J. says:

    GM She’s!
I wondered which Psalm that they would pick out of such a wonderful, beautiful collection of songs and poems. And I like this one! Perfect. I did have to look up what exactly 116:16 meant, “I am your servant, the son of your female servant” part. Here was the answer from google-
That is a powerful verse from Psalm 116:16. In this passage, the psalmist expresses deep gratitude to God for rescuing them from a desperate situation.Calling oneself a “servant” and the “son of a female servant” is a way of showing complete loyalty and humility to God. A “female servant” (or handmaid) in ancient times often had children who were also born into service to the same household. By using this phrase, the speaker means they belong to God completely—from birth to life.
We KNOW complete freedom comes from Jesus! But recognizing that we become a “daughter” of God through that salvation is the key. Even our children who have wandered away…still belong to the Father. In this sense we can have faith he will bring them back through circumstances and struggles. We are hardheaded but he knows what we need. He is our keeper. Your toddler might be stubborn and want their way, but they know you are ultimately their provider for what they need.

To answer the question (yay, an easy one today)- by reading my Bible daily and staying connected to him throughout the day through the radio and in talking to him nonstop..it doesn’t matter the season-I am with my Father.
Although in my youth and young adult (crazy prodigal child) life I only seemed to run to the Father when I needed something. Not unusual, in fact very common even with Christians, because when we are in need and can’t fix it on our own, we then think of Him! I run to prayer. I know this well, and I think it might be why I love jail ministry so much. They find themself in a desperate situation, loss of control, and are seeking and searching either for the first time, or running back to the Father! It is a perfect time to run in and help facilitate their pain. To help guide and direct them to the ONE that loves them, wants to hold them, wants to rescue them. Wants to welcome them home, running to them and throwing a robe around them and ordering up the banquet! It is just so beautiful to see. I see light come to the darkness in their face and an awakening! It is quite the testimony in itself! I see God turn things that look lost and ashes be found and turned to beauty. Hopelessness to faith and trust. I see them so hungry for his words as they soak up the Bible!
When we are a part of someone else’s journey it blesses and fortifies us of the power of God. We have felt it ourselves and we observe in others. The fruits are produced! We have freedom when we don’t. We have faith in the hard. We have trust when it seems impossible! We lament and turn to praise and song! Thank you God for your Mercy and Grace…your redemption and restoration. You are good and loving, may we sing of your daily! Amen

  25. Kerry Owens says:

    Amen!

  26. Cat-tee says:

Blessed and thankful to be able to go to God in the peaks AND the valleys of my life. May I never forget Him during the joy of my “highs” or the pain and discouragement of my “lows.”

  27. Kay And says:

I think I found myself more likely to pray in the tunnels and worship in the first light, once a season or hardship was ending but I definitely think that being in the Word everyday is a good antidote for that. 116:7 really stuck out to me today because that’s exactly what spending time with God feels like- a recentering of the glory that IS instead of focusing on and pining for the blessings to come.

  28. Searching says:

Coming to mind as I read Ps 116 is the hymn, He’s Is All I Need, written by Don Moen and Tim Brooks, 1996
    .
    He’s all I need

    He’s all I need

    Jesus is all I need

    He satisfies

    My needs supply

    Jesus is all I need.
    .
    Jesus is everything I need

    Jesus, Jesus

Jesus is life and breath to me

    Jesus my Lord

His name is Jesus my Lord
    He’s all I need

    He’s all I need

Q1 We can (and should!) pray and worship God in every season, trial, mood. We can (and should!) bring everything to Him – our challenges and our praises, our despair and our desires, our hopelessness and our thankfulness, our willing and obedient heart …
    .
    What a great Psalm!
God: hears, listens, delivers, saves and preserves me
    God is Gracious, Righteous, Merciful
I will Love the LORD, Call on Him, Believe in Him, Serve Him,
    Praise Him
    PRAISE THE LORD!
    .
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
God still loves the world, and Jesus’ sacrificial gift of salvation is still available … “that the world through Him might be saved.”
Praying for the lost and the prodigals, that all would realize their need for true salvation which only comes through accepting Christ as Savior. My heart hurts for our loved ones and those dear to me and to all of you that need Jesus. May today be the day they turn to Him.
    .

  31. Wendy B says:

The Psalms are such a gift. So often it can be difficult to articulate what is on our hearts and turning to a Psalm we can find almost anything that resonates and is related to where we are at. I do think that in especially heavy or deeply heartbreaking times it can be harder to eek out words of praise or it can feel quite shallow but there is also the knowledge and comfort that even if I can’t say the words, the Lord knows my heart, He always has His ear towards us and that He is our Rescue, our hope ans Salvation. He is with us. Thanks be to God.
May we all seek to grow in the grace snd knowledge of our Lord Jesus Chirst, bearing fruit, honoring and glorifying His name. Blessings on your day, SRT sisters❤️

I notice that I more quickly turn to God in the highs and lows, but become complacent in the middle ground, the routine.

So many of the Psalms reflect the Gospel message. The Lord loves us, He is our salvation. That does not mean we won’t have to endure difficulties in life, but we know the ending to the story!

  34. Aimee D-R says:

    Amen

  35. Kelly (NEO) says:

I haven’t noticed a distinction in certain moods or seasons that make it easier/harder to pray or worship God. However, certian moods/seasons do make it easier/harder to hear what the Lord has to say to me.

Thank you Tami- praying for the prodigals each week

    3. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

As always – joining in prayer for our prodigals.

This list saddens me. But I know the college age..(and now it seems 30’s & 40’s even more) are in their exploring years. The world seems to have grabbed them fiercely and holding on. My madre would have said it infiltrated slowly and we let it. She would be a gasp at the things we find normal. I guess, by saying this..We need to be stronger and more outspoken in our love for God (and others) more! How else will they know? Not from the TV, podcasts, and SM or music. US. Show them the importance of the Bible by having it out! Saying a scripture to them or messaging to them. Praying for them in their trials out loud. It doesn’t have to seem pushy, it just has to be real. In our homes…”this house serves the Lord,” so having standards upheld in your home and even in theirs- choosing to say I can’t participate if you are cussing and watching things that are offensive to my God. Wouldn’t it be wonderful. They will think you ARE crazy..but we have a standard again. I dunno. Maybe it would them separate more? Another good discussion for our FB page!

      1. Rhonda J. says:

The songs by Ben Fuller are so good to sing and pray for them. It so illuminates the prodigals- “Black Sheep” and the new song “Wait for Me.” I recommend the latter to look up his live version at Red Rocks with Ben Fuller!! SO GOOD (hands up emoji!)

        1. Jane K says:

Rhonda, I just watched the video “Wait for Me” with Zach Williams and Ben Fuller. So good! Thanks for sharing it!

    5. Indiana Elaine says:

Thank you, Tami. At my Bible study last week, one of the ladies shared a prayer for our adult children:
“Lord, my children are grown now, and their lives are no longer within my reach the way they once were. I cannot guide their every decision. I cannot shield them from every mistake. I cannot walk every road with them.
And sometimes that feels harder than I expected. But you love them more than I ever could. You see what I cannot see. You understand what I cannot understand. When I am tempted to worry, you remind me that you are already at work in their lives.
      Guard their hearts.
      Draw them close to you.
Protect them in ways I may never witness.
Teach me to support without controlling, to speak with gentleness, and to trust you with the outcomes.
They were always yours first. And I place them back into your hands today. Amen”

      1. Tami says:

I love this prayer! I’ve copied it!

“For God so loved the world that He gave his only son”. I am so glad that today’s reading included this salvation message. The psalms will always be a source of strength. ❤️

  38. Cee Gee says:

From Warren Wiersbe NKJV Study Bible on Psalm 116:15-

“The Father loves us so much that He gave Jesus Christ to die on the cross in our place (Rom. 5:8). If our Father loves us that much, then He must be concerned not only with how we live but also how and when we die. For believers, death is not an accident but an appointment.”

    Colossians 1:13-14~
13 He has rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of the Son he loves.
14 In him we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
    ..
Love, hugs, and prayers! On behalf of my friend and me, thanks to all who prayed! Her friend has been transferred to a better equipped facility as of last evening!

“I love You, Lord and I lift my voice to worship You,
    O my soul, rejoice.
Take joy, my king, in what You hear.
May it be a sweet, seeet sound in Your ear.”

  39. Tina says:

I love that the experiences and words of others, even folk from back in the day, way back when, can help bring me back to life..
To feel like you are not alone, or that there is One who sees you, hears you, One who brings your heart into alignment with His.. OMG!
    .
    BUT GOD…
    .
I tell you, there is nothing more heart warming, heart shifting, heart aligning than the words, emotions and story telling prayers of the Psalms..
This one chosen Psalm to reflect on alone, has more life scenarios and responses..
    .
    I call out…. He responds… He listens..
    .
I was filled with fear and anxiety… He is merciful and good..
    .
The dangers of death is all around… He protects..
    .
The horrors of the grave close in… He defeats..
    .
I have tears.. He is present with me..
    .
I feel crushed… The LORD’S goodness surrounds me..
    .
    The LORD saves.
    .
    The LORD is faithful.
    .
    The LORD is present, always.
    .
    The LORD is merciful.
    .
    The LORD is compassionate.
    .
The LORD wipes away our tears, when we weep.
    .
The LORD is good, so so very good.
    .
The LORD is to be trusted.
    .
The LORD listens, and He hears.
    This is just one Psalm!!
    .
The whole Bible is a salve for the soul, but the Psalms, they are another level.
    .
In the last words of the chosen Psalm,
    .
    PRAISE THE LORD.
    .
    PRAISE THE LORD.
    .
    PRAISE THE LORD.
    .
    .
    AMEN.
    .
Wishing you well this wet Monday, my dears, wrapped in prayers, love and hugs, as always..❤️

    1. Cee Gee says:

Morning, sweet sister! I love what you shared; so beautiful! Rain here last night, but none forecast for today. Sending hugs your way. ❤

    2. Sally B. says:

Amen, Tina! And as we learned studying the whole book for Lent, the writer begins crying out to the Lord for mercy in a desperate season, but ends by remembering what the Lord has done for him with praise and worship! Hallelujah!!

    3. Searching says:

Ahhhh, another Tina reflection that’s like a warm blanket on a chilly day … so good, sister, thank you❤️

      1. Cee Gee says:

I had that same image in my head re: the rain. ❤

    4. Tami says:

      So good as always!
