Front row seats are the best. I’ve only had them for a major occasion once or twice, but sitting close to the front at a sporting event or concert is my preference. The front row offers the best views. Sitting close lets me see in better detail the events in front of me. It also offers me the opportunity to be more involved in whatever it is I’m watching in some way. There’s a responsibility that comes with getting the front row seats.

Compared to others, Miriam may be a rather obscure person in the Bible, but her contribution to the story of God and His people is significant. Her courage to stand and watch to see what would happen to her infant brother, Moses, as he floated in a small basket down the river shows us a girl full of compassion (Exodus 2:4). Her boldness to approach Pharaoh’s daughter and ask if a Hebrew woman could nurse the baby for her and then to get the baby’s mother to do so demonstrates wisdom in applying the providence of God to daily life (vv.7–8).

Yet apart from this brief appearance in the beginning of Moses’s story, we don’t hear much about Miriam. But she is there. Like the rest of Israel, Miriam endured the harsh conditions of Egyptian slavery. She saw the unparalleled power of God from the front row as the plagues descended upon Egypt, one after the other. She probably had meal-time conversations with Moses and Aaron about what God was doing in the midst of these monumental events. She trusted God in the midst of the Passover, posted the blood above her door, and was ready to leave Egypt as the command came. She marched with Israel on the way to the promised land while the great Red Sea stood in their path.

Exodus 14 tells us she was there when God ripped the sea in two for them to walk on dry ground with an open sea floor in front and an Egyptian army behind. She was there when the water swallowed up her enemies. She sat on the front row as God powerfully poured out His mercy and grace on Israel and rescued them from their slavery.

It makes sense then that from the front row she led the Israelites in praise. There, with tambourine in hand and a praise choir of women alongside, she sang a new song of worship to God: “Sing to the LORD, for he is highly exalted; he has thrown the horse and its rider into the sea” (Exodus 15:21). The front-row seat brought a great opportunity to participate in the moment of praise to God.

Miriam’s life asks me (and perhaps you) this question: Where has God allowed me a front-row seat to see His glory and then offer Him praise, all because I’ve seen the details up close and perhaps better than anyone else? May we learn to worship and lead others to do the same, because we have seen Him do great and mighty things.

I love to hear the stories of those who are behind the scenes; the ones who you don’t know much about, but that God uses in mighty ways.

    Hi Shes,
I havent kept up with comments lately, but I wanted to ask for prayer again for what feels like a long, drawn out season of singleness.
The Lord has been speaking about this season ending soon… (soon is a confusing word though).
So … I have allowed myself to be around guys a bit more and went on a date for the first time since 2016 with a friend I had gotten to know in group settings. It was a great conversation, but I quickly realized he was not it (unequally yoked).
Needless to say, I feel so discouraged. It has been really hard to be in this place for so long, get my hopes up, then get disappointed I even put myself out there and imagined a life with someone for a moment.
I dont want to do that again, honestly. I am just gunna keep waiting on God’s timing. But my heart is so heavy and low, tonight, from hope deferred.
I just came on here to ask for prayer.
    Thank you. ❤️

    1. Dee Dee says:

Reading this now, Michelle and praying. He sees you and has a plan for your life! Keep looking up, praying you can sense His presence in the waiting and have peace.❤️

    2. Lynne from Alabama says:

Hey, sweet friend! I pray every day for you and our other single gals. I’m sure that it’s hard to wait on that thing that never seems to come but our awesome God does have a plan and perfect timing. Keep trusting Him!

I just started an audiobook yesterday by Timothy Keller (“Meaning of Marriage”) that is introduced as great for both single and married people. Might be worth a peruse?

  8. Natasha R says:

I love how Moses early life was defined by brave women who defied authority: his mother, Miriam, Pharaoh’s daughter and the midwife that delivered him and let him live. The patriarchy tells us that women are supposed to take only supportive roles in the sidelines (and even use the Bible to justify their belief), but open the Bible and you will see all these women who had the courage and wisdom to make a huge impact on people’s lives.

    1. Teresa Donley says:

      So true, Natasha.

    2. Nads says:

      Excellent point!!
I have recently a video (and a few written things) talking about the Creation of Eve and that the word used for “helper” (for Adam) entails much more than the word suggests in modern day / English

  9. Natasha R says:

MiriM was not just a front row spectator, she was part of the game.

  10. Mercy says:

Not too long ago I was reading some old books by the late preacher Kenneth Hagin. More like booklets since they are very short, powerful and to the point. He was sharing how he struggled with a deformed heart growing up, five doctors told him he would die, his single mother struggled terribly with 4 kids, and worse, she later went blind due to depression and she hid that and still went to work for a while. He was bedridden for over a year and then he died, like died. He saw himself in and out his body three times. While his grandma prayed, his mother screamed at God on the back porch of their house in Mckinney Texas. His mom’ screams were so loud that traffic was backed up. And a miracle happened, young Kenneth came back to life, he was 16, and later he could walk down the town square. I cried so much reading that book (book name: I went to hell). He was in and out, and he told his grandma, tell mom I love here, and off he went, and then back again. He asked the Lord why I went to hell, I was a church boy. Then the Lord saved him and told him, church attendance is not salvation, you gotta receive Me. And Kenneth said this, God called the normal people, the very absolute normal, ordinary, lowly people in this life to carry His will, the single mom, a child (who is bedridden like him, bullied at his elementary school, passed out on school yard), a very ordinary person, who has nothing to live on but Him. And we might think God only calls those who are so strong, capable, qualified, confident to be leaders, and shepherds. And also today, we see again, the little sister, from the despised Hebrew race, a baby boy in the basket floating down the river, while his mom was probably home in tears and traumatized, just to be called in later to breastfeed her boy who was still alive, and drawn out of the water ..with wages. God chose the very ordinary people. He saved them from the water that could have drowned them. “He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honor”(1 Samuel 2:8). I am in awe of the goodness of God. Have a lovely weekend dear sisters (long weekend for us here praise God). Be blessed and rejoice in the Lord.

    1. Jane K says:

Oh I love this, Mercy. Thank you for sharing.

  11. Gwineth52 says:

    And I wonder, Dear Shes.
What about Pharaoh’s daughter? Who goes unnamed & unheralded? How integral & instrumental was she? Immense! She rescued the baby boy, Moses, who would grow up to lead his people out of bondage in Egypt! She took the baby into her own home! Right under her fathers’s nose! She could have turned the child in. She could have rejected his cries. She herself could have been cast out. But her heart was softened.
What the Pharaoh sought to destroy, she God-led, sought to nurture. And we know how well this worked out for the hard hearted Pharaoh & his armies in the end. What Pharaoh’s daughter did was audacious & life defining! Critical to the whole story leading to Jesus.

    1. Adrienne says:

      Agreed. ❤️

  12. Gwineth52 says:

    Hello Shes
Huge handshake & hats-off to the devotion writer, Jeremy, for providing a more fulsome honor to Miriam. Above what our readings on surface offered. If left to just two verses & one song. While considerably important…and climatic!
This is how the devotion can enrich understanding. His more nuanced presentation of Moses’s older sister’s through line in Exodus. Compassionate. Courageous. Constant. And celebratory! And spirited! Spontaneous! And how the other women followed her lead! Miriam was more than one song, or one moment. I pray the likes of Miriam, in her essence, can live within the likes of me.

  13. Kelly L. says:

It’s interesting that the Bible actually does refers to Miriam a couple times, specifically in Numbers 12 where she speaks against Moses and God punishes her for it. Miriam seems to be remembered more for this specific moment later (see Deuteronomy 24:9). Miriam was also a prominent leader to the Israelite people throughout their 40 year journey in the wilderness, alongside Moses and Aaron (Micah 6:4).

  14. Cheryl Blow says:

Miriam was very brave to approach Pharaoh’s daughter and then suggest an Israelite woman to nurse the baby!

Then we don’t hear much from her until the Bible mentions that she is a prophetess! She lead them in praise of God!

She was a world changer by just watching over her brother and then leading people to worship and give glory to God! I pray that I will be as bold as Miriam and lead others to glorify God!

Also, a point that always amazes me, the Israelites walk across on dry ground! The sea had just been pushed back! It should have been wet! God is so amazing!

Praying for all have a blessed Friday!

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Yes, I noticed the DRY land more vividly this read! God not only provides a way..but sometimes makes it easy and clean! (mostly we have lots of muck to go through!)

  15. Katarina Friedman says:

I really appreciate how they highlighted Miriam and her presence in God’s story. She may not have been the main character but she did play significant parts and saw God move in amazing ways. Sometimes I forget to remember that people behind the scenes are just as important. Praise Jesus that he uses everyone’s

  16. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

Front row seat vs back row seat. I feel like many times I am in the back row — way back row! In those times I’m not seeing clearly because it’s too far away or my vision is blocked by something in front of me.
    .
But even still, I know God is there beside me. He is so patient, long suffering and kind. He waits with me as my eyes slowly see clearer and when I realize that those things blocking my view have been purposely placed there by God so that I will look to Him for direction and clarity. When I do so, that’s when I see Him do the great and mighty things.

“Sing to the Lord for He is highly exalted.”

Happy Friday She’s! May your day be blessed and may God be glorified in all you do today. ❤️

  17. Wendy B says:

Miriam has always struck me as the steadfast, strong, behind the scenes, quietly “getting things done” kind of person. She sees a need, she steps in. I picture her as an encourager and cheerleader and I think that type of person can often times more easily see things from the front row seat and are prone to look for what is good. In Miram’s case, its what the Lord is or can do and how He is at work. She easily recognizes His hand and offers praise. Oh, how I don’t want to miss seeing or entering into what the Lord is doing and pray that my heart would be tuned to His, my eyes recognizing His hand at work and that I would be looking for and eager to praise His name. For years I have kept a daily journal of praise, thanksgiving and gratitude to the Lord, noting the parts of my day, moments, miracles, obvious work of His hand, or things that He has blessed me with that day. Sometimes it’s small, seemingly insignificant things, like a hello from a neighbor in passing, the color of a flower or sometimes it’s big like how he protected my daughter and I from a very scary, near serious accident just the other day. All of these are “not missing the front row seat moments” and the ways God is at work and giving Him praise. I think my most precious front row seat is seeing my girls grow into amazing, godly
young women. What joy and praise to the Lord for how He has lead their lives.

Thank you Lord for the countless ways you are moving and working. May my words of praise always be lifted high and exalt you because you are worthy of it all. Amen

‘That my heart may sing your praises and not be silent.Lord my God, I will praise you forever.’ Psalm 30:12

A few songs come to mind…
Worthy of it All by Cece Winians, the great hymn, Come Thou Fount, and then the fun Sunday School/VBS action song I grew up singing, Horse & Rider – I will sing unto the Lord for He has triumphed gloriously. The horse and rider fell into the sea! The Lord is God and I will praise Him! My Father is God and I will exalt Him!

    Yes, Lord, we exalt you!

Happy Friday, SRT sisters. Praying for all of your requests❤️

    In other news….

We have been caring for a 3 month-old baby in addition to our toddler for 10 days; it has been a perfect situation for teaching our foster son a smidge about being a sibling (especially an older one) and all that entails! I feel so much Peace (thank Jesus ❤️) about not accepting his newest sibling but this was perfect — he will miss baby girl and will be so sad, despite my warnings, that she won’t be here when he comes back from preschool but….
…. nothing compared to had I accepted his baby brother and he were to be adopted out of my home leaving baby brother behind, or WORSE… thinking I chose to keep baby brother but not him.

    This was great!!

    **

I can’t remember if I provided an update on my goddaughter but… Grandma has chosen to raise her (praise Jesus ❤️) but is overwhelmed and open to our support but what form that will / should take remains to be seen.
    *
Lord, give us ears to hear You and wisdom that comes only from You.
    *
For now the “clock is ticking” on them finding affordable housing for the two of them. THIS is the most pressing prayer request at this time — in addition, of course, to their mental health and finding the Jesus Granny has never had a relationship with, in the midst of such tragedy.
    **

(Oh! Gotta go make ?last? bottle… love to all❤️)

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Wow, Thank you for giving us a glimpse of what you do and what an amazing gifting God gave you to provide for those that need it!! It must be hard and beautiful all at the same time!!

    2. Teresa Donley says:

Foster Mama, I’m praying for your goddaughter and her grandma. And forr you in all you do for the little ones in your care.

    3. Victoria E says:

Foster Mama praying for you and all the smalls in your tender care and their families !

  19. Foster Mama says:

I’m so very thankful for all the precious front row seats I’ve had (one in my mind is watching an aunt see Heaven with the smile of a child moments before she was taken to eternity, giving us such assurance as we said goodbye).
    *
But, going on sort of a convoluted journey….perhaps the freshest thing in mind right now is a fictional show I watched last night, about an adult daughter who was traumatized by challenging events in her childhood (which she either regretted or misinterpreted) who gets to “time travel” back to listen in on conversations her parents had and see events unfolding…(I won’t give too much detail) …
    *
I think it made me all the more grateful for the “front row seats” and seemingly clear moments in my life BUT ALSO a reminder to trust Jesus for things that might be harder to understand from “the cheap seats”, knowing deep down — please DO remind me of this in future my sisters — He loves me and holds me in His hands.
    *
    Does that make sense?!

    1. Carol J Mylin says:

Yes! I hear you… it made perfect sense… no need to add anything!! ❤️

    2. Rhonda J. says:

YES! That’s good…to remember we don’t know everything!! Only our small perception! What is this movie!?

  20. Rachel says:

Today we only read about Miriam’s bravery and praise. But I love how the Bible includes failures, too. In Numbers 12, Miriam and Aaron rebel against the authority of Moses and basically say “God speaks to us just as much as you, why do we have to listen to you?!” Turns out God didn’t agree and Miriam ended up with leprosy for a week (the fact that’s she was punished and Aaron was not implies that she perhaps she was the pot-stirrer in this situation). Miriam got distracted by pride…how often have I done the same? When I stay in my lane and focus on the things God has given ME to do, I am free to flourish and to praise with a whole heart. Lord, let it be.

    1. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

I too read Numbers 12 today, and agree – I love that the Bible includes “failures” and how He brings them back, otherwise – I would feel I had no hope.

      1. Rhonda J. says:

Yes, thank you all for sharing that!

    2. Foster Mama says:

I was definitely thinking the same….but, I do love today’s Devo!!

    3. Gwineth52 says:

Indeed, Rachel. Lord, let it be!
      Beyond faults & failures.
      Beyond disappointments & denial.

      & Disappointing.

  21. Mari V says:

“Prince of Egypt” have any of you seen this animated version of the life of Moses? I remember seeing this in Monterey California (we were on vacation) and I remember seeing this in theaters while there. Reading this reminded me of when Miriam picked up her timbrel and started singing. This movie (though animated) was one the best portrayals of what happened when the Israelites were set free. I’v always been a “visual” person and this brought those memories and the music. It was amazing. Front row seats? I love how our sweet Tina (below) describes it, and I’m sure many of us have had similar experiences. “One” of my front row experiences was ironically in front of a judge (and there were several), though I was trembling inside (especially the first time) and not because I was afraid of the judge. BUT GOD….I KNOW my God, my JESUS was with me giving me strength to do this. Sigh…..I trust my Jesus will be with me when I have to go do this again. Happy Friday sweeties! ONE more thing, please pray as I’m feeling bad about an incident at school, I feel bad for making someone feel bad, when that was not my intention.

    1. Foster Mama says:

Praying as requested ❤️ MARI V

    2. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

Praying for you today Mari – for the incident that happened at school. Maybe today you could speak to that person letting them know that it was not your intention to make them feel bad. Offering an apology goes a long way – and God could use it as a testimony of Himself.
Also continuing to pray for your upcoming court date. ❤️

  22. Aimee D-R says:

From a front row seat to giving away your brother, to a front row seat of Gods power and glory. Amen

  23. Tanya.evans says:

G-d brought the Israelites out of Egypt to worship Him; the one true G-d. 400 years of forced servitude in a land surrounded by pagan gods was what they were leaving behind.
Toby Mack said in a song, ” If you got to somewhere, why not here?Miriam was the match the lit the fire!
After walking on dry land, through a sea Miriam led the daughters of Israel in the most heart felt praise. The Creator of the universe had delivered them in a big way from bondage and their enemies were destroyed. I can picture the women spinning, swirling, clapping with tambourines, singing and weaving together in joyous praise to their Creator and Deliverer. This was a simach (joyous occasion) of the highest form.
In Jewish tradition, Miriam is associated with water. She watched over the baby Moses in the Nile and emerged as the praise leader by the sea. She is said to be the guardian of a well of water in the desert. When she passed this well dried up.This is only Midrash like a Jewish legend.

    1. Lisa H says:

    GM She’s!

As I read the part where Miriam suggest a nursing mother…I was like “Brilliant!” What boldness and quick thinking, all of course orchestrated by God! But she had to be a willing soul, moving quickly and thinking on her feet. How many times have I left a perfect opportunity to move in the Spirit prompting me, but shrugging it off. Then thinking why didn’t you, you should’ve…

God gives us lots of opportunities to move on His behalf, He wants us to be used in His mighty plans, but we have to be still, get off our phone, be aware. Oh how we as Christians have been like warm! We are on fire on Sundays then get back to our busyness a second later.

We are all Miriams, we can be used in powerful ways! Thank you Jesus, for letting me be hands and feet of Jesus. For my eyes to be open and ears listening to you speaking! You use us in powerful ways, and it makes my heart praise! It makes my lips sing and rejoice! For You are not only Worthy of our praise, you are Worthy of our time, using us as part of you master plan!! Nothing is more fulfilling or gratifying Lord!! To have the front row seat of hearts changed, from flowers bloom in a desert, beauty from ashes…You are a God of Restoration and Transformation and not only do we get to see it in our own lives but we can have the front row to see it in others and even participate!! Amen.

I see this all the time, every week at jail ministry….transformation from broken to the slow mend. Dark to light. Defeat to empowerment and peace! Thank you Jesus for the front row seat to see your power and to give you praise! To see these ladies in jail raising their hands and singing in their loudest voices in a little room, in their jail overalls, stripped down bare-all pretense gone—singing “More Thank Able” (Yes, He is MORE than able to move..) and “Trust in God!”
It blesses me in a beautiful, powerful way.

It is easy to not see Miriam in this story. I was always amazed that she asked the princess about getting the baby’s own mother to nurse the baby (unbeknownst to the princess, of course). My children’s Bible at school has titled the story… “Miriam Is a Brave Girl.”
    .
She was, indeed! Let us always remember the big part she played in this account of Moses leading the people. Her part was instrumental.

I stood beside the river’s flow,

    A sister’s love, a quiet hope,
A choice to not be afraid.

I watched the sea divide in two,
And saw God make a way.
Then lifted song with dancing feet
    At dawn’s first freeing day.

I’ll trust like that when fear draws near,
    With courage in my thread—
To watch, to lead, to praise, to sing

I feel like this reading was just another day of Moses. Miriam was only really mentioned in a few verses. yes she was there and we know that but show her more in the spotlight. This did not give much of her story.

    1. Adrienne says:

I agree with that and made a comment before I read yours. So easy to lose Miriam in the (w)reeds!

      1. Gwineth52 says:

        Well put, Adrienne!

  29. Searching says:

The boldness of children is so encouraging – it stays with some as they grow up, and not with others. I’m one of the Nots, keeping out of the spotlight, doing my thing behind the scenes. BUT, being introverted and shy goes right out the window if there is a need or crisis with a loved one – boldness returns front and center.
For sure, we are surrounded by people with needs and in crisis. Am I bold in sharing Christ with them? Am I watching to see what God is doing? Am I bold in praising and sharing His awesomeness to encourage believers and nonbelievers?
    .
Praise by Elevation Worship is on my mind.

    Praise when surrounded

I’m the little sister to three brothers. A blessing and a curse! But as I read about Miriam, I think she must have been very proud of her brothers, Moses and Aaron. I know I feel proud of my big brothers (now that we are all adults haha). But I also love how she was right there with them – front seat – as the writer said. Not just observing but participating. What a blessing it is to be part of a family that serves God. I thank God this morning for my family – my parents and my brothers, my grandparents and my in-laws – I am blessed to have such a rich heritage of loving and serving the Lord. And even though not all of my own kids are following the Lord right now, they too come from this rich heritage. Thank you, Lord, for Your faithfulness to my family and for being present with us through many generations.

I saw the sunrise coming up this morning over the North Atlantic. It was glorious and I had a front row seat. God’s majesty was on display, again, and all I could do was praise Him. Lord Jesus you alone are worthy! Bless the Lord oh my soul and all that is within me. Bless His holy name.

    1. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

That must have been so beautiful! ❤️

    Jeremy Writebol, thank you!
    .
Your question in the last paragraph.. Where has God allowed me front row seats to see His Glory and then offer Him praise..?
    .
I think, my life has been my best seat yet.. I mean, from whatever angle, I had a good view, no distortion, no big heads or shoulders in my way. I saw it all, I was front row when it all began. I was right there in the rough, and I was right there in the smooth! I was front row in the clapping and bravo, and I was still front row in the disasters of my life. I was front row, when my stage collapsed, and I was front row in the rebuilding.
    .
    I was there!
    .
    BUT GOD..
    He was too!
    .
Right there with me. In my coming and going, He was close to me. In my brokenness, He sat next to me. In my weeping, I could feel His arm. In my rising up in anticipation, He was there. In the most beautiful and wonderful chorus of my life, HE is there.
    .
    HE IS THERE.

    HE IS HERE!

HE IS IN MY HERE AND NOW..
    .
He IS my front row seat!
    .
Each day, there is, for sure, something to praise God for. I sit here now, as I write, at the dinning table, looking out, front row seat, for sure, at the beauty He has spread before me, and I sing of His beautiful creation. The lilies are coming through, fast and furious now, and I praise. Beyond them, the roses have started blooming in an array of colour in the garden, and the sun shines, and the birds sing, “He is worthy to be praised” God’s warmth over my neck of the woods.. I see it, and I praise, I praise, and I praise, some more!!❤
    .
I come back to Hezekiah Walkers Every praise, which now plays in my mind, now my lips, wait there, lets get it up on tunes..
    .
    Here we go,
    .
Every praise is to our GOD, every word of worship with one accord..
    Every praise,
    Every praise,
    Is to our GOD.
    .
    Sing hallelujah to our GOD,
Glory hallelujah is due our GOD,
    Every praise,
    Every praise,
    Is to our GOD..
    .
    GOD my saviour,
    GOD my healer,
    GOD my delivered
Yes He is, yes He is..
    .
    .
Father God, thank you, thank you, thank you for ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS being in that front row seat with me..
ALL Praise and Glory to you O Lord.
    .
    AMEN.
    .
Happy Friday dear hearts, knowing He is but a breathe away..
    Much love..
    Tina..x❤
