Job

Open Your Bible

Job 1:8-22, Job 19:23-27, James 1:1-12, Revelation 1:9-20

This Is the Old Testament is part of a twelve-week thematic overview of the entire Bible. Each day we’ll read a thematic selection from a different book or two of the Bible, along with supplemental passages that show how the theme of that day’s main reading is found throughout Scripture. We’ll also read a brief summary of each book and a reflection on how the book fits into the larger story of Scripture. This week, we’ll finish the Historical Books and move into the genre of Wisdom Literature.

The Book of Job: This book provides insight into the suffering of Job, a man whose faith was deliberately tested. Poetic dialogues between Job and his friends, who attempted to apply traditional wisdom to his situation, make up most of the book, which concludes with God speaking to Job.

How Job Fits into the Story: Job reminds us that suffering comes to everyone, the righteous and unrighteous alike. God does not always keep His people from danger or suffering. But the book of Job reminds us that God is wise and powerful, even in our darkest seasons. His presence is always with His people.

Reflection Questions:
1. How does Job 19:23–27 offer hope in the midst of your own trials and suffering?
2. How does today’s reading shape your understanding of the story of redemption?

Take time to reflect on your responses and share what you are learning with others in the community in the comments.

  1. Katelyn Ford says:

Not sure if anyone mentioned this yet, but the passage listed for James is not the one in the book study. It should be James 1:2-12. This passage makes way more sense with the context of the Job passages.

  3. Ellie Hines says:

If God didn’t let us go through trials and suffering then we wouldn’t see how God really works and how He teaches us things through the suffering and trials. The suffering and the trials increases our faith in God more and more. It shows that Gods presences is always on us and it shows how wise and powerful He is.

    Reflection Questions:
    1. How does Job 19:23–27 offer hope in the midst of your own trials and suffering? That we are perishable beings. Our sufferings are short in comparison to the eternity we will live in once we are in heaven. We will see many deaths in our lives but that is temporary as we’ll see them soon.
    2. How does today’s reading shape your understanding of the story of redemption?
Our sufferings may be deep and tragic but we are saved that is a fact. We will be changed into newer and better bodies in heaven and we’ll be reunited with our loved ones there. Keep the faith! ♥️

Happy Friday ladies on a chilly rainy day. Rain always brings me so much comfort, especially the sound of rain. The book of Job is actually one of my favorites. I was flipping through my bookshelf and grabbed my old Bible study guide, The Armor of God by Priscilla Shirer (I did it back in 2017). Interestingly, I just saw Rhonda mention it too, same mind sister! I came across a journal entry I wrote during that study and really wanted to share it with you. I wrote it and marked it as conversation with God. “There’s nothing I will hold back from you. You are my chosen and special one. Take up your shield of faith, and faith comes by hearing and hearing the Word of God. Do not slack. Work and practice carrying the shield. The more you hear and know My Word, the bigger and more secure your shield will be. Plus you need to know how to lift it, since it is heavy. Read my Word daily. Write them down, memorize them, speak them up daily and your shield will be strong. It’s that simple. Be faithful to me as I am to you. Don’t give up on Me. The best is yet to come. I love you and you can do this. It is not hard at all. I already fuel you with power to do this”. And on the end of the page, I wrote some context, “I saw a dream of me being hit brutally by high waves of ocean water, but I was covered by a railing that was fastened onto concrete ground and I was safe and not pulled out to the current”. This entry made me emotional, I had no idea what storm that was, but God’s words for that moment still hold true today. Amen to what SEARCHING was saying to sum up, “We will always face trials, some more than others. No matter what, He will always be there for us, His mercies are new every single morning”. Be blessed dear sisters.

    1. Rhonda J. says:

That’s good Mercy about the shield! We have to train to use the armor that is there for us! It takes discipline and training to do beforehand (preparation)…and the little snippet you put is so powerful!
I feel like that’s what God was saying to me in 2014…you know me as your religion…but you have to read the Bible and be with me daily to truly know Him (and fortified against the evil one).

Oh Mercy this was so good! Thank you. ♥️

  8. Teresa Cooper Donley says:

As a young person and a young Christian, the Book of Job scared me to death. I couldn’t imagine God allowing Satan to take everything from Job, including all his children. As I’ve hopefully matured in my life and in my faith, I’ve come to better understand that all the bad things in life and the world are the result of Satan and sin having free reign. Of course, we ask Why God. But all I have to do is look at the Fall and realize that since that moment, sin has caused every bad thing that happens to each of us. What I get from Job now is his tremendous faith through all the losses and hardships he faced. And his ability to know that his Redeemer lives. And that he knew – didn’t just hope – that he would see his Redeemer face to face in his bodily form when his earthly life came to an end. Rather than being frightened of this story of Job, I pray that I can see it as a story of redemption, and the knowledge that my Redeemer lives and know that I, too, will see Him face to face in this resurrected body.

On a funny note, when I was a teenager and having many teenage clashes with my mom, one of her favorite responses to me was, “Teresa Gale Cooper, you would try the patience of Job!!”

Thank you again for praying for my knee surgery yesterday. The pain is less today, and I’ve begun putting weight on it. I’m off the opioid and just taking Tylenol. And ice is helping tremendously. Today, I’m feeling the results of the anesthesia and just feeling yucky. But I’m so thankful to have that thing out of my knee and look forward to walking without the constant pain very soon.

    1. Mercy says:

Thank you for your update, I hope you feel better soon from the anesthesia effect.

    2. Rhonda J. says:

So true- it’s our perspective! Looking at the faith that Job had DESPITE all that Satan did, knowing GOD was in charge ultimately. And love that your mom said that phrase…I have never heard that surprisingly!

    3. searching says:

praying you will be 100% soon!

I would like to ask this praying community to pray for a former student. He spent a lot of time in my classroom after school due to a miserable home life. We reconnected after more than 35 years. He wanted me to know that he found his way back to Jesus through a vision he had. His life has been much like Job’s. He has suffered much loss and grief. He lost his family through divorce after his wife had an affair, he lost his job because of physical problems, he totaled his car through an accident and he is just steps from homelessness. Due to all the loss in his life, he turned to drugs and alcohol. He sunk into deep depression. He said he hated himself so much that he would spit at himself in the mirror. His faith has been tested over and over. He has had 4 broken bones in the last month. He cannot take pain medication due to his addiction. He texted me yesterday to tell me he is physically, mentally, and Spiritually exhausted. He virtually has no support system. Please pray for him that he would find joy in living and no more falls or broken bones.
    His name is Steve.

    1. Tami says:

Oh that is so sad. Praying for Steve. Life can be so hard and unfair sometimes.

    2. Teresa Cooper Donley says:

      Praying now for Steve.

    3. Lisa H says:

      Praying for Steve

    4. Mercy says:

Praying for Steve that his life will turn around. That like JOB he will receive his restoration and redemption from the Hand of God Most High, who can turn dead bones in dry valleys into a strong living army, that Steve will receive beauty for ashes, new strength, good health, new family, new job and new abundant life being free from bondages. Please tell Steve to have hope in GOD and never give up his faith! Believing the best is YET to come, GOD will surprise Steve if he lets GOD walk with Him and surrender to GOD. I pray blessings over Steve in Jesus’ Mighty Name. Thank you ELAINE ❤️.

    5. AZ Walker says:

Praying that Steve will find hope in life and things get better soon.

    6. searching says:

Praying for the Lord’s comfort, strength and support for Steve, that he would feel the exhaustion lift and be filled with hope, for healing of bones, employment, housing.

      1. Tina says:

        Sharing your prayer, Searching… Amen♥️

    7. Tina says:

Praying for Steve. p3raying wholeheartedly for peace to overwhelm him and that in that peace he will find comfort in God. and that in finding that comfort, he will feel Gods mercy, and in that mercy he will begin to see goodness, Gods goodness, which he will find running after him daily.
There will always be sorrow, confusion, brokeness, but prayerful Steve will take heart, for Jesus has overcome the world..Amen.♥️

What an incredibly hard journey. Have prayed.

    9. Maria J says:

Oh Lord, have mercy on Steve! Set your angels about him and keep him from harm. Deliver him from evil. May he humble himself before you, Lord, and that you would lift him up. Bring your people alongside him to encourage him and minister to him. We ask this in the matchless name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

    10. Adrienne says:

Praying heartily for Steve. I think you’ve mentioned him before? Glad that you have been there for him through the years, sharing the love of Christ with him.

    11. K:) says:

      Praying for Steve on Monday!
Thank God for providing encouragement from one friend to engage many believers in time of need!
      Shalom Steve!

  11. Jane K says:

Oh, that my responses to suffering mirrored Job’s response in Job 1:20-22 “Then Job stood up, tore his robe, and shaved his head. He fell to the ground and worshipped, saying: Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will leave this life. The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away.
Blessed be the name of the Lord. Throughout all of this job did not sin or blame God for anything.”

I struggle with how to pour out my pain, frustration, lack of trust, and fear to the Lord while being respectful and humble. Remembering that God is the Creator and I am the creature. I want my lamenting and my prayers to align with His plans and His timing.

    1. Tami says:

Jane that stood out to me too! After ALL that, he worshipped! Wow!

    2. Grammie D says:

Jane, the book Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy, Discovering the Grace of Lament by Mark Vroegop was life changing for me. I had several deep losses I could not have foreseen within two years and this book taught me how to bring it before the Lord. It’s based on Lamentations and Psalms of lament. I can’t recommend it highly enough. A statement on the back of the book is excellent: Lament is how you live between the poles of a hard life and trusting God’s goodness. ❤️

      1. Jane K says:

Thank you, Grammie D, I’m going to order this book!

    3. Lori Misenheimer says:

That was my prayer! Let me always remember the lesson of Job!

    4. Tina says:

Jane, i think just saying Jobs words with a pure heart, wrapped in faith, that God is still good in our trial and heartbreaking situations is the start of giving your pain and frustration to God..
Ill be praying with and for you to find the freedom of letting go and letting God..♥️

      1. Jane K says:

        Thank you, Tina❤️

  12. Ravanne Lindsay says:

I love that the Word of God offers new insight & fresh perspective in different seasons of life. I’ve always known God allowed Satan to bring suffering on Job – but I’ve skimmed over the fact that he didn’t just use acts of nature like fire. He used PEOPLE. The Chaldeans harmed his family — humans, people like us who serve darkness & not the Lord can certainly be used by Satan to harm us. What a realistic picture of the fallen world we live in. Job was faithful even so.

    1. Mercy says:

Sharp observation. Yes, satan uses wicked people to kill/steal/ destroy without mercy over the righteous people everywhere. Psalm 91 is a good prayer to pray and decree over ourselves and loved ones (it calls for angelic protection which I really like).

  13. Cee Gee says:

    Job 19:25-27.
“But as for me, I know that my Redeemer lives,
and he will stand upon the earth at last.
26 And after my body has decayed,
yet in my body I will see God![a]
27 I will see him for myself.
Yes, I will see him with my own eyes.
I am overwhelmed at the thought!”
    .
From NKJV Enduring Word Study Bible:
“Job’s certainty was impressive. This was something he knew; it was much more than a hope or a guess. Job’s Redeemer was more than a spiritual concept; He was a living being who could stand at last on the earth. Job knew his Redeemer would come to comfort and vindicate him even though to this point he had been conspicuously without evident comfort from God. Though Job expected the destruction of his flesh to be completed, at the same time he was confident that God would not hide Himself forever; in his flesh he would see God. This would be the moment of Job’s comfort, restoration, and vindication, and he would anticipate it—even if it came after life on earth was over.”
    .
    From Joshua 24:15 NLT
“…But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.”
    .
    Psalm 13:5
But I trust in your unfailing love. I will rejoice because you have rescued me.

  14. Tami says:

#1 – My head response to this question is that this shows me that suffering in this life will come to an end and we will live forever with God.
Revelation 21:4: 4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous things have passed away.
When my brother was dying last year (it will be a year in July), I was not hopeful. Day after day, to see him suffer tremendously, but unable to do anything about it, was so heart-wrenching. He was in so much pain and there was nothing I could do to alleviate it – no meds, no doctors. We just had to sit and watch as he slowly wasted away to a mere 100 lbs, a walking skeleton. Finally, his body could not take any more and he passed. The verse in Revelation brings me hope NOW, but not really in the midst of what was going on. I remember wishing that I could “rise above” and find that hope, but I couldn’t. My pastor always says, “God doesn’t waste pain”, but I still have a hard time seeing the purpose in my brother’s pain and suffering. Yes, maybe for me it will someday help my faith, or my nieces will be stronger because of it… I don’t know. But what was in it for my brother? That’s what I really struggle with.
#2 Job had lost everything, stayed faithful although he questioned, and ultimately God redeemed his suffering and restored him. Like me/us. I had nothing before Christ came into my life, He has redeemed me and set me free. I am not where I want to be but I’m not where I was.

    2. Mercy says:

I am so sorry for what your brother went through. You are such a wonderful, deeply caring sister. When you asked what he gained from all of this, i heard the answer, “he gained heaven”. I wanted to share that with you, and I truly hope it brings you some comfort and closure. For us, who are still on earth fighting the last leg of the good fight of faith, we might not fully understand the true magnitude of heaven, because we are so focused on death (on earth the shadows of death are around us, even more so in the last days when evil is reaching its fullness), but he has entered into the presence of the Lord. It is well with him. Hugs Tami.

      1. Rhonda J. says:

  16. Rhonda J. says:

I love Job. It’s hard though to think that God is okay with the devil tormenting us, killing, stealing and destroying. Sure, taunting us to test us, but the true devastation and destruction, we ask…why God?! He has to be allowed everything that he does. God obviously could say no.
Job loses everything. Cattle, home, CHILDREN, money, health, well-standing. (everything but that darn wife that was no help to him, lol)

When we question and say “why God” we can trust that He is so thrilled that we are staying close to him through the devil’s trist. He is watching. He is giving us his strength. He wants us to grow through him and persevere. When I did a study by Pricillas Shieir “Armor of God” it really brought all this to light. That God gives us his armor. Paul lays it out how to protect and fortify ourselves from the attacks in Ephesians 6. It really also made me see “issues” as the devil just trying to ruffle my feathers and get to me. Therefore I was able to turn these attacks to a challenge for me to say “not today Satan!” It changed my perspective with the little things.
Now the big things…like Chronic Pain, I know the devil would love to separate me from the Lord. He would love to isolate me from my church and people. To get me down, mad, tired, disappointed, depressed, and discouraged. It can spiral. But God- He doesn’t leave us to overcome on our own. Left to our own we would seek comfort in band-aids- liquor, pills, drugs and other self-seeking distractions and balms.
No- the Lord is my Shepard, I shall not want….he leads me to still Waters..

It’s good that the whole bible is filled with battles and sufferings and how God is over it all. If things were wonderful and great, we would never long for something better- our heavenly home with Jesus! We want to cry out, we NEED to cry out “Come Jesus Come!!”
This life is temporary, and the ultimate perfection, no suffering, no pain, is waiting. Hallelujah I will keep my eyes on Jesus through the storms and fires, the pits and valleys. For he uses the pain for purpose and the tests for testimonies!! Let me be palpable Lord Jesus. Let me hold steadfast and strong on a firm foundation rooted and grounded in you! My rock, my redeemer.

    1. Tami says:

Amen Rhonda, beautifully said! “He uses the pain and for purpose and tests for testimonies”.

  18. Searching says:

To refresh my memory, I reviewed the book of Job this morning and then found got questions dot com narrative to be helpful. So much questioning in this book, of things of God that we are not equipped to understand – God lays out some of these to Job beginning in ch 38, overwhelming me, reminding me of all that God is and does, and all that I am not. Paraphrasing, were you there when I laid the foundations of the earth, determined its measurements, laid its cornerstone, made the boundaries for the oceans? Have you seen My inventory of snow or hail? Is it you or Me that sends the rain, forms the dew and ice? Who’s in charge of the constellations? Weather? And God continues this through ch 41.
    Job responds in Ch 42:2-3

“I know that You can do everything,

And that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You.

You asked, ‘Who is this who hides counsel without knowledge?’
Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand,

Things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.”
    .
Q1 We will always face trials, some more than others. No matter what, God is with us – in the wee hours of the night, many or all of us have cried out to God – Why? Why now? Is there any good that can come out of this suffering, heartbreak, trial? Are there answers other than Job’s, that we don’t and can’t understand all of God’s plan and thinking? No matter what, He will always be there for us, His mercies are new every single morning.
Like others commenting this morning, Nicole C Mullen’s ‘Redeemer’ comes to mind. ❤️

I love this verse! Thank you for sharing it.

  21. Kathy says:

Q1. My Redeemer lives! And one day I will see Him face to face and everything will be made right.
    “I will see him myself;
my eyes will look at him,
    and not as a stranger.
My heart longs within me.” Job 19:24
In the meantime, trials and suffering will come. Jesus told us they would. But we can consider them great joy. We can look at what God is working in us because of these trials. Those trials, testings will produce endurance and endurance will lead to maturity. And one day we will receive a crown of life.
Q2. Because of the Fall, everything broke – suffering, pain, sorrow, trials came into the world. The evil one has been given permission to test us – to tempt us. But God will always provide a way of escape. And the ultimate escape is Jesus and what He did on the cross and His resurrection three days later. One day He will return and all things will be made right.

    1. Rhonda J says:

Amen Kathy, I liked the way you said that! Your comments in the past always resonated with me.

Do you know I always think, when I see your name, that day when your husband had the stroke, and you let us surround you in prayer for the unknown. Your comments always showed your faithfulness in the Lord in the suffering. (his recovery)

The part of Job that gives me hope and not anxiety is God choosing him. To be known as His faithful servant and to have His confidence that our heart and eyes are and will remain on Him through the valleys of life ✨✨ Amen

    1. Karen Swanson says:

I never actually thought of that part of the story. So true.

    2. Sheryl says:

Great thought! I had never thought of that before and instead of “why would God allow Satan to do that to his faithful friend” God reveals to us His confidence in Job and our ability to be faithful to Him.

    3. Kristyn Ratlief says:

      ❤️

    4. Rhonda J. says:

Yes, that is so good! It changes our whole perspective..I think “I’m gonna make God proud of me how I handle this” and it is such a testimony to others of what we do in our trials. Even the small ones- do we complain? What do we say and do? People are watching.

      1. Tami says:

        So true!

    5. MARTHA HIX says:

      ❤️

  28. Susan Burley says:

Thankful that Our Redeemer lives! What an encouragement that we will be united with Him one day. Thank you Jesus!

    1. Tina says:

      ♥️

  29. Kelly (NEO) says:

Yes, Job is a hard read, but it reveals so much of our own misunderstandings of the way we expect life to go if we are “good”.
    .
In God’s plan for redemption, we don’t get to dictate what we will or will not experience, but like Job, we can be sure that will see God and all will be made right.
    .
SONG: Redeemer by Nicole C Mullen chorus
Now I know my Redeemer lives
    I know my Redeemer lives
    Let all creation testify
Let this life within me cry
    I know my Redeemer
    .
Grace and peace to your hearts today Shes

    1. Tanya says:

I am glad someone shared this! I am late getting to the comments tonight. I got distracted this morning and I did not write anything, but I actually head this song yesterday on the radio in my car. Thank you so much for sharing this.

    2. Cee Gee says:

I was going to share that song yesterday and then I remembered we would be in Job today so I waited because those verses in Job always make me think of that song. I quickly scanned comments before posting and saw it mentioned so I found a different song. lol ❤

    3. Tina says:

What truth yousprak, Kelly, and the song choice.. Perfect!♥️

  30. Hannah Carmel says:

“For I know that My Redeemer lives”. When I was younger that was so powerful to me that Job could go through all of this and still say that. ❤️

  31. Tina says:

I knew Job was coming! Oh, be still my heart, such heartbreaking stuff, and yet.. GOD is ever present in every moment of this story of pure heartbreaking suffering..
    .
    BUT GOD..
    .
Ever present Father God, no matter the suffering, no matter the pain, no matter the brokenness, He never leaves nor forsake, there, waiting to bring redemption in and to all circumstances.
    .
If you believe, trust and hope in Him, GOD, there is nothing you won’t see Him do, because.. ‘you know your Redeemer lives’ and in all situations He is close, always!
    .
Life is not always perfect, never will be, but when you hold fast to GOD, and His redemptive love, His presence, for sure, is always always with His people..
    .
    AMEN.
    .
My daughter had 5 core friends! She was a friend to all, but these 5, were present most days at our house. When she went ‘home’ these friends would visit me, constantly sending flowers, cards of love. I have been there for one in the delivery room to see her little people (twins) come into this world. I have been an ‘honorary’ Mother of the bride, I have been approached by the husband to be of one for her hand in marriage.. and the children born in these unions call me Nana T.
I add this on because, as with Job, GOD truly did redeem his life not to erase his past and what he had, but to add to those memories with new ones covered in GOD’S redemptive love.. our heartache and sorrows will never define us, rather, and in my case, enhance and extend the memory of Julee, for without her and her friendship with these beautiful girls, I would not have my extended family!
Thank you Father God, for your redemptive love..
    .
    .
    Happy Friday, my dears…
Much love covered in hugs and prayers in gratitude for you all..❤️

    6. Cheryl Blow says:

    8. Teresa Cooper Donley says:

What a beautiful testimony of the impact Julee had in the lives of her friends. That they continue to show her love to you shows how much love she also showed to them. God works in and through them, and they continue Julee’s love to you as well. Thank you for sharing this, Tina. ❤️
