Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

Open Your Bible

John 5:31-47, John 6:1-21, Numbers 11:21-23, 2 Kings 4:42-44

When I read the story of Jesus feeding the five thousand, the first thing I always think of is a Sunday School teacher reading the passage, then exclaiming, “But wait! There’s more!” like a television infomercial. “Did you catch that? The men numbered five thousand. There must have been triple or quadruple that when you add the women and children!”

To my Sunday School teacher, this information served to amplify the already stunning miracle, adding to our awe of Jesus. Feeding five thousand people with five loaves of bread and two fish is impressive enough, but what if it were really fifteen or twenty thousand?

But for me, one of the best gifts of reading Scripture, especially familiar stories, isn’t these amplifications; it’s how new things rise to the top when we read and reread. In today’s reading, the parallel stories of Numbers 11 and John 6 stopped me in my tracks. I’ve read both of them dozens of times, heard them taught from my earliest Sunday School days, and yet, the way they mirror each other captivated me today. Scripture is such a sprawling web of connections and references and adjunct stories; beginning to untangle it never gets old.

Leading up to our Numbers 11 passage, the Israelites had fled from slavery in Egypt. But when they were alone in the desert, they had nothing. Nothing to eat, nothing to drink, no schedule or plan or anything. So they, naturally, began to complain and ask Moses if there was a plan. Moses pressed the Lord for a response.

But Moses replied, “I’m in the middle of a people with six hundred thousand foot soldiers, yet you say, ‘I will give them meat, and they will eat for a month.’ If flocks and herds were slaughtered for them, would they have enough? Or if all the fish in the sea were caught for them, would they have enough?”
—Numbers 11:21–22

Jesus and His disciples shared a similar back-and-forth. Philip said, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread wouldn’t be enough for each of them to have a little” (John 6:7). Then Jesus took the five loaves and the two fish and fed everyone, with abundant leftovers.

We often bring our own needs before God with the same doubt and scoffing as the Israelites and Philip. We ask for much with little faith. In these two stories, we see the Lord provide because our God is a God of abundance, not scarcity. He cares for us lavishly. He doesn’t offer the bare minimum or only what we need to survive. He provides “everything required for life and godliness” through the gift of Jesus (2 Peter 1:3).

We ask for much with little faith. How true that is when we go to God in prayer and hope you but there is always a part of me steeled ready to not receive due to my little faith. It’s a moment to ponder

  4. Michelle Paul says:

Philip wasn’t wrong. It really was impossible. But the problem was that he left God out of the equation. That’s what happens when we seek counsel from those not walking with the Lord, advice may be technically correct but spiritually incomplete.

This story is all four Gospels, which means God really wants us to learn from it. When our resources are woefully inadequate, He reminds us that His provision, compassion, and abundance always surpass human limits ❤️

What do you learn about God’s character from this passage?

      Great takeaway here! Thank you!

  5. Wanda Woehlert says:

What I need is more faith in a God who will provide.

  6. UCobb says:

2 Kings 4: 43 says ……”They will eat, and they will have some left over” Jesus fed 5,000 with 12 fish baskets and 5 loaves of bread and had some left over to spare.

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, Eph 3:20-21

Jesus doesn’t stop at just meeting our needs. He goes beyond what we can expect! He goes beyond what we pray for and he exceeds our expectations.

When Jesus healed the man at Pool of Bethesda, he didn’t just heal him of his physical infirmity but He made him WHOLE, then told Him to go sin no more. He does exceeding abundantly over and beyond what we can ask or think. Our God is great and mighty! When God moves, He moves in a mighty way- beyond amazement.

      Amen ❤️

I love this reminder. I do bring with my requests a sense of doubt. So cool would it be to just have faith in the Lord. For he does provide all that we need and it honestly reminds me to be more thankful in the Lords provisions.

It was so neat seeing the parallels in these verses! Praise God, He is so good to us.

  9. Alayna P. says:

I really love how these passages show that faith isn’t about having everything figured out. It’s about trusting Jesus even when we can’t see the whole plan. In John 5, He reminds everyone that His works already prove who He is, and in John 6, He shows it again by feeding the crowd and calming the storm. It just hit me that He already knows what He’s going to do, even when we feel unsure or unprepared. That’s such a comfort ❤️

    1. Ucobb says:

      It sure is! ❤️

  10. Linda Collins Borrelli says:

He provides for al our needs. He is an abundant Savior and Lord.

I made a correction to the Scripture address in my earlier post this morning and thought I’d share this from John MacArthur Study Bible on John 6 passage:
“Interestingly, both creative miracles of Jesus, the water into wine (2:1–10) and the multiplying of bread (vv. 1–14) speak of the main elements in the Lord’s supper or communion (v. 53).”

Found It In Jesus | Stephen McWhirter & Matt Maher (New Worship Song)
Lyrics – Found It In Jesus
Strength for my weakness, peace for my worry
Rest when I’m weary, help when I’m hurting
Grace for my pride to humbly receive
    All You have for me

The fullness of life, the faith to believe
I found it in Jesus, the greatest of loves
The hope we all need, I found it in Jesus
I searched the world both high and low
Running on empty and I didn’t know
All I was looking for, I found it in Jesus

It’s not by my power but in Yours I trust
A shield and a tower for all those I love
In every season from famine to feast
    You give everything

Beyond the veil, to life everlasting
Be Thou my vision when I cannot see
You are already seated in glory
    You give everything

God’s provision never ceases to amaze me. I think of so many times when I was under employed or unemployed how the Lord provided for me. Unexpected checks in the mail, refunds from the doctor’s office. Jesus never fails and He does exceedingly abundantly above all we can ask or think.

verse 41 got my attention today: ” I do not accept glory from people.” Jesus is not a people pleaser but a G-d pleaser. Lord, help me to seek the glory that comes from God and not others.

  14. Mercy says:

What an incredible reading we have today. The account of Elisha feeding 100 men is almost unknown for me. Thank you SRT for pairing it. God did it again. May we proclaim this truth over our meals, our families, our communities that we will never lack food on the table, and our children, grandchildren, that the Word of God will sustain them. When there are more mouths to feed, the pressure increases. I really look up to Moses -what a great and humble leader! Moses had to feed 600,000 men (plus families) in the wilderness, for a duration of 40 years, and God provided manna, quail, water from the rock faithfully. Jesus fed 5000 men (and families) with bread and fish. Elijah was fed by widow and son, and by the ravens for many days. And when it’s our turn, we can forget. God is the Great Provider. When His people cannot sustain themselves, in the wilderness, in the drought, famine or weariness, He becomes their faithful sustenance. Deuteronomy 8:3 says, “He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna… to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord”. Hunger has a purpose. I think that’s why we are called to fast (to go through hunger voluntarily) to learn a spiritual lesson. Strangest thing happened, when I fasted before, I was shaking so much (went through strong coffee withdrawal, headaches from the withdrawal, and hunger), I felt so weak, then I changed the method, one time I prayed for strength from reading His Word alone three times a day (three meals of the Word intake), and the weakness left, I was able to go on without being so miserable. That was a great game changer (miracle) for me. The Lord knows and sees us, He has gone through the fast himself for 40 days and nights in the wilderness, and He is able to help us in our weaknesses. We got snow over the Thanksgiving weekend, and I harvested 10 lbs more of green tomatoes (what a huge harvest for me, fun fact: tomatoes are good for your heart, decrease risk of heart disease, what a reminder from God to nourish/guard the heart). I also cut in some coneflowers and leaves to dry out and save for tea (they have medicinal benefits to heal cold and flu). I feel so blessed by God through the garden harvest. He gives so abundantly, truly the God of more than enough. Be blessed dear sisters.

    1. Rhonda J. says:

God’s provision is better than ours! Oh if we would remember that when it comes to food. Nutrients are in God’s provision!

      1. Rhonda J. says:

        And medicinal needs!

        1. Mercy says:

❤️ Amen, such beauty and medicinal needs.

    2. Cee Gee says:

❤ What a harvest… so cool! I have lots of coneflowers but haven’t thought about making tea from them even though I see Echinacea on the shelves in stores… Duh, as Adrienne says. ☺

Back from my colonoscopy – everything went well, praise the Lord!

As I was reading these passages I was thinking, wow – how they all intertwine! Even though I’ve read all of them in times past, yet none of them together – when you read them together they all compliment and testify of each other, showing the glory and power of God!…and then I read what Melanie wrote, addressing how they “mirror each other” and I thought, yes! God is amazing, His word is amazing and no matter how many times I read it, there is always something new! That can not be said of any other “book” in this world!

Just a side note, there wasn’t just leftovers – there was abundant leftovers, that is so like God!

Be amazed today sisters, by the awesomeness of God! ❤️

    1. Cee Gee says:

Thankful all went well and praying for accurate good report! ❤

“God does impossible math.” – Amanda Jenkins, wife to Dallas Jenkins who created the Chosen. I heard them share their story of the Perry’s podcast again and it was a refreshing reminder that we are just called to bring what we have (loaves and fish) and trust God with the multiplication of those things.

    1. Michelle P says:

      On the Perry’s***

    2. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

Amen!…so good to see you back Michelle! ❤️

    3. Rhonda J. says:

Yes, my Pastor started a series titled God’s math. The first week was how he multiplies! This past Sunday was subtraction! What God takes away to make us stronger. When Gideon was going to war with 300,000, then down to 10,000, down to 200! God took away, but it increased his faith and trust in God!!

      1. Mercy says:

This is so good, never thought of it this way. Thank you Rhonda!

      2. Michelle P says:

        This is so good!!

    4. Mercy says:

      Amen to impossible math.

I don’t remember reading the account of Moses or the one in Kings. I’m thankful to know about those two as well. Thanks SRT for giving us more scripture to relate to in John.

  20. Sundayschoolteacher says:

May we have faith in our Father to provide for our needs. Faith over fear. Lavish love that he gave His only Son for us to be the Savior of the world. Thank you Jesus for being our Shepherd, Priest and King of Kings, Lord of Lords. Amen.

THIS morning I woke up earlier and MORE time then normal and still time got away from me. This mornings devo is so sweet and special as over and over I have witnessed God continue to provide for my kiddos and I in ways that would seem impossible, BUT God!! My precious JESUS has made a way there was no way and it could ONLY be God! LOVE when Melanie says: “He doesn’t offer the bare minimum or only what we need to survive. “He provides “everything” required for life and godliness” through the gift of JESUS! Gotta go love you all!

  22. Cheryl Blow says:

You search the scriptures but you don’t recognize Jesus. I pray that God will open our eyes to truly see Jesus! To not become callous to the daily miracles in our life.

That God is a God of abundance and not scarcity! His call for c us to bring our little and He will abundantly supply!

Loved Tina’s miracle! God is good!
    Praying for all!

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Oh Yes, that’s what I was going to comment..then couldn’t remember after reading all the others…lol! Thank you Cheryl!

  23. Cindy Jordan says:

Love the passages today, esp the OT references. What also caught my attention was the disciples rowing in a storm 3-4 miles. Shew. These guys had some guns. Once they realized that it wasn’t a ghost walking on the water but Jesus they were willing to take him on board – and AT ONCE they were at the shore. Amazing ! How often am I just paddling and struggling my way through things when Jesus is there just waiting for me take him on board and ease my journey?

    1. Adrienne says:

At once… Amen to that! ❤️

    2. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

  27. Traci Gendron says:

I relate to these passages. I prayed and prayed for my son. I think after awhile you lose hope when you do not receive the miracle. I understand how the people started to complain. It’s sad, but I get it. It’s easy to doubt. You have to really dive into God’s word and lean into Him to stay strong. To realize you don’t get everything you ask for. Even if it’s your son’s life. We may not know why this side of heaven why things go the way they do. But I will say I wouldn’t be here to tell my story without God holding me up through it all.

Jesus feeding the 5000 is a very familiar story – countless times over the years. And, I read through the Bible many times but can’t say that I recall ever having seen the overlap and parallel of these passages from OT and NT. Thank you SRT! The greatness of God just cannot be overlooked Time and time again we see His hand, His abundance and His provision and He is always seeking to reach our hearts, to see Him. Help me Father, not to miss all that you have for me and to seek you above all else. Amen❤️

    1. Carol H says:

      Amen ❤️

    2. Mari V says:

Hi Wendy, I as well had the same reaction of the overlap and parallel (love your word usage as I was trying to convey this to my daughter just now) between the OT and NT! So cool! AND how GOOD God is!

  31. Rhonda J says:

39 You pore over the Scriptures because you think you have eternal life in them, and yet they testify about me 40 But you are not willing to come to me so that you may have life.

Ouch…you know scriptures. Yet you are MISSING me. You are not recognizing me. You do not have the eyes to see! We can’t miss Jesus! His ministry, his love, his directions. It’s like we talked about yesterday, we can’t quote the scriptures and the rules, without seeing the work being done between the lines.

The feeding of the 5 thousand! He is Jirah Jehovah, PROVIDER. He will provide for us when we trust and have faith. Sometimes it is how we hoped, sometimes not, and sometimes unbelievably amazing!! Have you ever been jaw-dropped surprised at an answered prayer? They didn’t even gather and say a big prayer, they really didn’t seemingly have much belief, just looked to Jesus, like, hmm, don’t know how this is going to work. And Vi-lau! It happened!
They saw it happen in their knowing of scriptures, so they should have been expectant! I should be expectant! Ready, watching, and seeing the miracles around me all the time! They are there, some too big to miss, others, small answers to simple prayers!!
May I/we stall expectant. Pray for little things and pray for the big ones.
I have a big prayer request for healing for one of our butterflies. She just got released in August, but found out while in prison six or so months ago she has stage 4 bladder and cervical cancer. By a miracle she was accepted for free treatment at Moffitt. Last week they found that it has spread in her lymph nodes, to her tongue, and elsewhere. She starts chemo tomorrow for 8 weeks. Her name is Crystal. Thank you for joining me in prayer.

I think of the song “Million Little Miracles” by Elevation and Maverick City.
You held me steady so I wouldn’t give up
You opened doors that nobody could shut
I hope I never get over what You’ve done
I wanna live with an open heart
I wanna live like I know who You are
I hope I never get over what You’ve done
It’s not coincidence and it’s not luck
I know it comes from above
      I’ve got miracles on miracles
      A million little miracles
      Miracles on miracles
      Count your miracles
One, two, three, four, I can’t even count ’em all
      Miracles on miracles
      A million little miracles
      Miracles on miracles
      Count your miracles
One, two, three, four, I can’t even count ’em all
Oh, You broke my chains (I can’t even)
You saved my life (I can’t even count ’em all)
You set me free (I can’t even)
You gave me victory (I can’t even count ’em all)
Oh, I can’t even count ’em all (I can’t even, I can’t even count ’em all)
You kept my mind, Lord (I can’t even, I can’t even count ’em all)
You healed my body, Jesus (I can’t even, I can’t even count ’em all)
Oh, I can’t even count ’em all (I can’t even, I can’t even count ’em all)
      I try and I can’t keep up (I can’t even, I can’t even count ’em all)
‘Cause every day there’s a new miracle (I can’t even, I can’t even count ’em all)
I got breath in my lungs (I can’t even, I can’t even count ’em all)
I got clothes on my back (I can’t even, I can’t even count ’em all)
My mother would say, I got food on my table
      (I can’t even, I can’t even count ’em all)
Lord, I know that You’re able (I can’t even, I can’t even count ’em all)
      Say, I can’t even (I can’t even, I can’t even count ’em all)
      I can’t even (I can’t even, I can’t even count ’em all)
      I can’t even (I can’t even, I can’t even count ’em all)
Too many to count (I can’t even, I can’t even count ’em all)

I have a little notebook that I too record my miracles when they happen, so I can continue to remember, and it builds my faith. Seeing them in the scriptures and seeing them in my own life and others!

Matthew 5:39-40 hit me between the eyes this morning! I had never focused on those verses before but they define the hearts of the people. I had seen this topic frequently of late so I am paying attention! I must be sure I am following the Word (Jesus) and not the word that is Scripture knowledge alone! Then I hopped over to HRT and saw this!
    From Matt Redmond/He Reads Truth

“He knew their real problem was their sin. He did not just come to separate them from their physical hunger and get them out from under the thumb of Rome. He came to bridge the gap between humanity and God and to take the penalty of death. I want to be like those who follow Jesus for Jesus alone.”
    .
Let’s be diligent, sisters, to search our hearts and focus on our Savior and our maturing relationship with Him! I am speaking to myself here because since retirement with more time to study I have been convicted on this matter.
    .
Gotta run for now, but hope to catch up with comments and maybe a song later.
    .
    Love, hugs, and prayers! ❤

    1. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

Thanks for sharing the He Reads Truth! I went there after you mentioned it and unfortunately, I can agree with Matt in that I can see myself in the crowd and so little of myself in Jesus…by God’s grace, this will change.

    2. Mercy says:

Great reminder. We have to be diligent 100%. He is coming soon!

    3. Cee Gee says:

CORRECTION: JOHN 5:38-39! apologies, sisters; out pastor has been preaching from Matthew for weeks so my brain took the wrong turn!

  33. KellyD says:

I love how the author mentioned ‘how new things rise to the top when we read and reread’. I have read through John many times, but never really took notice of John 6:15 before:

“Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king *by force*, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.”

The people, seeing the miracle of feeding 5000 and His unlimited power and wanting Jesus to save them from Roman rule, were going to forcefully put him in a position to fulfill their own desires of freedom and create the temporal kingdom they envisioned here on earth.

It has me thinking about the ways I’ve prayed for Jesus, knowing His unlimited power, to fulfill the desires of my own heart. Wanting to create my own temporal kingdom here on earth that bends towards my needs and desires. Neglecting, in those moments, to remember that it is not my will be done, but His. Going to spend some time more time this morning thinking through this.

    1. Rhonda J says:

Oh what a profound thought Kelly. I had never thought of that in that particular way after this big proof of a miracle.

  34. Crystal McDonald says:

God wants us all to live fully and abundantly. This reminds me that I must have steadfast faith and belief in what I know our savior is capable of doing. It also requires me to remain in His word. Everything is in Him and through Him.

  35. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

The devotional says, “We ask for much with little faith.” I remember growing up & being told about having faith as small as a mustard seed. Help us with our unbelief Lord, and remind us of Your holiness!

  37. Nancy Davis says:

The overlapping events the SRT team uncover always are exciting! Those ah-lha

  38. Elise Leonard says:

I absolutely love how SRT highlights the different passages that have the same message. It feels like Gods miracles & promises are less “distant” because He has been faithful time and time again. It’s a reminder He won’t be faithful or provide only once or only to some people, but rather He provides for many people in a lot of different scenarios.

  39. Maria B says:

“We often bring our own needs before God with the same doubt and scoffing as the Israelites and Philip. We ask for much with little faith.” How true this is. I sometimes find when I am praying that I sound like God’s power has a limit, by the language I use. Part of it is that I think sometimes our human mind doesn’t fully grasp that hugeness of God. But I think sometimes I feel like I am praying for “too much.” But God listens to every prayer and wants us to bring to Him all of us, even if we think it is too big.

    1. Wendy B says:

      Amen❤️

  40. Carla says:

“God doesn’t offer the bare minimum or only what we need to survive. He provides “everything required for life and godliness” through the gift of Jesus (2 Peter 1:3).”
Jesus provided as much bread and fish as the people wanted, and He provides Himself to us, as much as we want.

  41. Erica Chiarelli says:

After reading these OT and NT stories again, and Jesus was just explaining late in chapter 6 that Moses wrote about Him…He is the One who provided for Moses and the wandering Israelites. He is the One who provided for the prophets, specifically the one in Kings!!
I picture Him waving at them going, Hey guys, it’s Me ! I’m the Messiah, the Suffering Servant…the One who saves His people from their sins but also provides every need according to My riches in glory!
He is the One! He was, He is, He always will be!!!

    1. Kari Jae says:

      ❤️Amen!

  42. Aimee D-R says:

Thank You Father. You always provide. Forgive my doubt, reward my faith.

  43. Cathy Tubby says:

I wonder if Andrew had a spark, an inkling of faith starting to form, by mentioning the 5 loaves and two fish. But then questioning- “but what is that with so many”. I think I feel like that often, starting to shape a hope, then doubting “it’s too far fetched”. Jesus fed that tiny spark though!

    1. Mercy says:

It’s easy for humans to overlook that tiny spark in the presence of a big circumstance. Thank you for bringing the focus onto this. This is where the narrow road starts, to think differently against the fear, the limitation as human reasoning defines it, to see possibility where others might see dead ends.

  44. Kelly (NEO) says:

Love that SRT added the miracle God gave through Elisha in the readings.
    .
The people may have made the connection too. Truly One greater than the greatest prophets (Moses and Elisha) was among them.

      1. Linda says:

Thank you all so very much!

    7. Therese says:

Linda, after five surgeries my Dr told me I would never be able to have any more children. I had two. I remember laying there thinking how I wanted one more child. Well, guess what? Shortly after that conversation I became pregnant. His nurse said he walked around the office in disbelief for two days talking about me. My reply to the nurse was God is bigger than man. I will be praying for them. Also, she is the only one to give us grandchildren.

  47. Searching says:

Believe in Jesus … John 5:39-40, where Jesus says 39 You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. 40 But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.
    .
    Come unto me …

    2. Mercy says:

      Love this song! ❤️

  48. Esthera Cotoarba says:

I was stopped in my tracks by the Elisha miracle, of all his miracles I could not remember this one. And what touched me from Numbers, 2 Kings and John is the emphasis on how the Lord always fulfils His promises and His words. He does what He says He will. What a good start in the day ❤️

    1. Searching says:

This one had slipped my mind as well ❤️

    2. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

Amen! This reminded me of the song by Charity Gayle, I Believe. This is the chorus…
      .
      I believe
You are who You say You are
You do what You say You’ll do
      You’ll come through
      You are always able
      I believe You’ve already made a way
So I’m running through parted waves
      Straight to You
      You are always faithful
      .
      He is always faithful!

      1. LindaK says:

        ❤️❤️❤️

  49. Lucille Prosser says:

I like Melanie was stopped in my tracks in the parallel of Numbers 11 and John 6 wondering how I never noticed this before. This is a great reminder that our God always knows what we need. I need to remember He is all I need and with Him I will have all I need. ✝️❤️

  50. Tina says:

Alpha, a course run by the church for ten weeks, 3 times a year. is a series of casual group sessions, that explore the basics of Christian faith, covering topics such as..
    Who is Jesus?
    Why did Jesus die?
    How can I have faith?
    Who is the Holy Spirit?
Why and how should I pray?
    .
    It’s a great course.
    .
The course involves food. This is where i come in.. so, on the first night, every first night, I serve cottage pie.. winter, summer or fall. Why, because it stretches. The course is a sign up, but oftentimes more turn up than signed up, so cottage pie allows for all to be fed.
    .
There is something, if only a small mustard seed, of the feeding of the five thousand on those first nights.
I once made three large trays, each tray aimed at feeding 45 people, plus. When they came to collect the third tray, they were a tad perplexed because the queue went out of the doors still. The pastor came with the girls and prayed over the food as they walked it out to serve… all were fed, seriously, and half the third tray came back to feed the helpers.. who managed to take some home for family!!
    .
Thst was my feeding of the 150 plus people miracle!
    .
    The miracles never cease..
    .
    And they never will..
    .
    BUT GOD..
    .
    AMEN..
    .
Happy Tuesday, my loves, covered in much love, hugs and prayers for the miracles to be seen in your lives.. God is good. All the time!♥️♥️♥️

      .
I’ve had this experience so many times Tina – at our communion dinners or pot lucks, when it looks like way more people than food. But God always comes through and as you mentioned, there are usually left overs. I don’t know how He does it but He does!
