John 1:1-5, John 1:14-18, Luke 4:16-30, Matthew 16:13-20, Matthew 17:1-7, Mark 15:1-5, Mark 15:16-39, Matthew 28:1-10, Matthew 28:16-20, Colossians 1:15-20, John 21:25

Jesus in 500 words or less. Is that even possible? After all, the apostle John ended his Gospel by stating that the world is not big enough for all the books that could be written about this man, Jesus Christ of Nazareth (John 21:25). And if John says it can’t be done, who am I to try?

The daunting task reminds me of those blue test booklets in school, the ones designed to hold handwritten answers to essay questions, paragraph after painful paragraph to prove how much we did—or didn’t—know about the subject at hand. I love words and I liked school, but even I hated those blue booklets. They symbolized a reckoning none of us could escape, the teacher acting as the sole judge of whether our finite knowledge was enough.

“Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15). Jesus quizzed His disciples after yet another encounter with the religious leaders who were constantly trying to corner Him, embarrass Him, and discredit Him. But His question isn’t only for the Twelve; it’s also for us.

Who is Jesus? He is God incarnate, the very fullness of God in the form of a man. John described Him this way: “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). Jesus was present at creation when the earth was formed and the first man and woman were made in the image of God. “He was with God in the beginning,” John writes. “All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created” (John 1:2–3).

Not one thing was created apart from Jesus. “He is before all things, and by him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:17). And yet, Jesus came to walk the very earth He formed, becoming a real human being who talked and laughed and ate breakfast and felt physical pain. He came to dwell among us—to live and die and rise again as the Savior of the world.

Who is Jesus? God the Father answered the question as His only Son stood high on a mountain, three of His friends beside Him and two ancient fathers of the faith looking on. “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased” (Matthew 17:5). God then followed that statement with a not-so-subtle command: “Listen to him!”

Who is Jesus? He is the Son of God who reveals the Father, full of grace and truth (John 1:18). He is the Lamb of God who fulfilled the law we could not keep and took the punishment for our sins on Himself (Romans 8:3–4). He is the risen Savior who reconciles us to God and gives us peace (Colossians 1:19–20).

All of Scripture points to Jesus. Every story is about Him. And though we may not be able to explain this reality in any number of blue test booklets, we can know it in our bones all the same. As we read the stories of women and men in the New Testament, I pray that we see Jesus. May we stand with Peter and profess: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16).

  14. August Hunt says:

God knows everything. He knows our hearts, our minds, what we need, what we don’t need, etc. However, we have to remember that we should always place God FIRST. Colossians 1:17 tells us that all things consist of what God has made. “He is before all things, and by him all things consist.” God is the creator of all things visible and invisible. God made everything for the good, but don’t let the “good” that He has made, turn into something that you put before Him. Prioritize God and your time with Him above everything.

  17. Susan Marcin says:

When I came to Christ, it was on the shag of seemingly broken threads: a failed business, years of alcohol as a go-to, marital issues, and serious health concerns. For a time, before I had a mammoth breakdown, I searched continuously online for some diagnosis to match my symptoms. I had MRI’s, spinal taps, blood tests, doctor visit after doctor visit. I was plagued by fear of death.

But one day, not long after my breakdown, through the message of His Word in a Bible study, Jesus proclaimed release to this captive. I learned about God’s power through the resurrection that God could work out all of my failures and sin for my good and for His glory. It happened in an instant: my fear of death was dissolved and replaced with a mind of life and peace in the face of death.
The writer of Hebrews states, “Now since the children have flesh and blood in common, Jesus also shared in these, so that through His death He might destroy the one holding the power of death—that is the devil—and free those who were held in slavery all their lives by the fear of death” (CSB).

My life has been changed by Christ in the way that He has given me Someone greater than myself to focus my eyes on. He has set my mind on things above versus earthly things. “So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace” (Romans 8:6 NLT).

Jesus is my savior and my light on the path to our Father. He is the light that can never be overcome. He is the love of my life. Jesus is who I am striving to be like. I ask God to let my eyes always be set upon him. I pray that we all turn our eyes unto Jesus so that we can bask in his glory and reign. He brings me Peace in a world that is filled with chaos. He gives me an abundant and free everlasting life.. In his name I pray forever and always. Amen

Each one of us has an understanding of who Jesus is and I think if we would be describing Him, we will find it not in what is written in books but in what was inscribed in our hearts. He is very personal to all of us! I pray that we grow more intimate in our fellowship with Him and may we encounter His love deep unto deep. God bless!

  29. Tori Faryna says:

Jesus was the Word. The ABSOLUTE TRUTH of who God the Father is and His unchanging character. Oh how we are blessed that we don’t have to live by our feelings or someone else’s opinions but we can know that we can align everything by the ABSOLUTE TRUTH of Father God.

Excerpt from the song Jesus, Thank You. As I was wondering how to put who is Jesus? into words, this kept repeating in my mind. It pretty well sums it up for me.

  48. Shawna says:

The words “Listen to Him!” hit me like they have never before. I know that we must listen to Jesus and all of His teachings. I just love how the Word is alive and always showing us that it is. That exclamation point at the end of that sentence!! Love it!! Are you listening?

  55. Maiya H says:

The Word that became flesh…that is Jesus. It is a reminder to me, as we are also called to be just like Jesus, to live out the Word. We have God’s word at hand, freely accessible, to learn from. Reading this reminds me just how much Jesus was that, as He walked this earth. As we walk this earth, we are to do the same – to be like “the Word that became flesh”.

I know, being a human being, I will never be perfect. However. I want to strive to be as much like Jesus as I possibly can be. I want the world to see Him when they look at me; to hear Him when they hear me speak.

The Word became flesh…I want to be just like Jesus.

  56. Amy Gleason says:

I too am interested in learning about the culture of Jesus’s time period. And also am about to order a study Bible and am interested in the meaning of words. How do I decide which one to order?

  57. Nhu Pham says:

Jesus was once to me the most repeated name in different churches that I have been to throughout the years. But now as the years have gone by, as the hard knocks of life have settled, He has revealed to me that he is truly a Servant King, the closest friend that you can cry out and pour your heart to in your prayer closet/ or in your car, and He will not judge, He will not laugh but He sympathizes with the suffering of us little humans. I am usually in awe of the things that He can bring onto my path, to comfort, to assure me He is there, in my daily life (a smile of a stranger at the grocery store, a car that would let me join in on the highway, or a houseplant on my wish list for months that suddenly was there at the, and many many more – truly not enough books can record). Jesus is truly personal, and so detail oriented to little things of our lives- us little humans. Some night I truly stay up and wonder how could He ever be so altogether wonderful and gracious, kind and serving, yet mighty and fearsome? He longs for our relationship, my dear sisters. We bless Him as we spend time with Him, we bless Him as we spend time with the Book/His Word to draw from it wisdom and truth, we bless Him as we talk to Him daily in prayers, and we bless Him as we thank Him for the little surprises He saves for us. If God has given us His one and only son, would he not freely give to us all things? Glory to Jesus.

    1. Laurie Crary says:

Thank you, Nhu. You are exactly right.

    2. Trisha Thomas says:

      Yes, same Nhu♥️!

  58. Susan Crosby says:

As this whole word becomes filled with more darkness may people see that Jesus came to save a lost world and He brings light into the darkness. Grace upon grace!

  59. Elsa Terry says:

Amen! ❤️ As a supplement to this study, I would highly recommend a new tv series called “The Chosen”. A multi-season series that beautifully (& creatively!) captures the life of Jesus and the lives of His disciples. As my sister’s friend told her, “It shows us the Jesus we know and love!” I can’t say enough about it. Please check it out! http://www.thechosen.tv

  60. Viv says:

Yes, Jesus is everything. I particularly love the description that talks about him revealing the Father.

  61. Alexis Padilla says:

Jesus is all forgiving. God is the messiah our savior!!! I was reading this and was just amazed by his amazing light! God is good❤️

  62. Jessica Nicolas says:

Jesus is everything. Literally speaking. He has set the bar that we must meet and meets us with grace because we can’t. He is good and true and beautiful in all of His ways. I love Jesus, because you first loved me. ♡

  63. Beth Ann McCormick says:

Ladies, I am pleading for prayer. My boyfriend is not a believer (yet) and he has agreed to do the He study with me!! Please please pray for the Light to fill his heart and for ears to hear the Savior’s calling.

    1. Liz A says:

Praying for you and for your boyfriend right now. My (now ex) bf is in that same boat. I pray for him every day and have seen God begin to work in his heart. Praying your bf hears and experiences God through this study and for you to have strength & wisdom to witness to him.

    2. Dawn Weddington says:

Firstly, let me just join you in praise!!! Thank you, Lord, for your boyfriend’s agreeable heart! Do with him what you will, Lord, because only you can transform him. I’ll continue to pray for the both of you. This makes me happy to see!

Jesus you are the messiah! The son of the loving god.

  65. Harley JustineNuñez says:

Listened to the podcast this morning and almost went to sleep without reading today. I’m glad I did. I’m reminded just how gracious God is and reminded how every present Jesus’s sacrifice is for our lives.

    1. Beverly Jackson says:

Where is the podcast your speaking of?

  66. Elizabeth Kelly says:

I’m confused, I always thought Jesus was the son of God, therefore not God himself. But if I understand correctly John describes Jesus as God.
    Still confused.

    1. Beth Ann McCormick says:

It’s one of the most complicated and confusing aspects of understanding God and His character, an aspect that I have realized that I as a human can never truly, fully grasp. Yes, Jesus is the son of God, but He is God. The Trinity—Father, Son, Holy Spirit—is all one Person, never separate. In Genesis, God says, “Let us create man in OUR image…” showing that, as John reiterates, that God the Father was not alone at creation. Isn’t it cool! And yet so confusing when you try to think too hard about it…

    2. Elizabeth Friend says:

Hi Elizabeth, when my girls were little I would explain it by using a marriage covenant. When a man and woman are married, they are two individuals who become one. Except the Trinity is so much more so. They are three individual beings, the Father who created everything, the Son who became flesh and died for us and gives us salvation, and the Holy Spirit who brings us comfort. And yet they are altogether One. One and the same.

  67. Ashley Albright says:

I love how God puts things in your life right when you need them. This is exactly what I needed.

  68. Ammi Pintos says:

As I was reading I thought about how the ángel, and Jesus always reminded the disciples and the women at the Tomb, do not be afraid. I kept thinking how Jesus comforted his disciples and us by letting us know that he will be with us always. The love of Jesus and the father to die for our sins is something that I will never understand and will forever be grateful for his grace.

  69. Angela Smith says:

Amen. I am so lucky to be a child of God, and that he sent his son for me and for all.

  70. Maria Guevara says:

Amen the scripture gives language to describe and remember who Jesus is. That he is who says he is. He’s our father and the son of God who redeem us. ❤️

  71. Rachel Reekers says:

Y’all my heart is weary. Today I come broken before His throne so grateful for the powerful truth that He is same yesterday, today, and forever! His marvelous grace will never run out. Even when the darkness seems overwhelming His light will never be diminished!

    1. Ashley Richtarik says:

Prayed for you this evening!!!! Praise Jesus that He provides hope and rest for us!

    2. Beth Ann McCormick says:

Rachel I love you so much! And Jesus loves you so much too! Keep on holding on to His Light, my sweet friend!

  72. Nicole Green says:

    Amen. ❤️

  73. Melissa Mcronney says:

    Praise God, Amen…powerful

  74. Laurel BaciulisBačiulytėSmith says:

When I read these verses, I get a warm, excited feeling in my heart. To know He came and walked this earth is amazing. I think, what if my son, the LEGO creator in our family, made a lego world and he was lord over all of it.then his little LEGO guys started doing stuff themselves, stuff my son told them not to do.

When I think of Jesus this way, it’s great to know God gave us free will, but it’s astounding to know He gave us a second chance to live with Him forever because we couldn’t keep the law He gave us. I’m sure He knew that Adam & Eve would sin. I bet God has had a lot of very happy and very sad thoughts about His creation in the thousands of years it has been here.

Personally, I want to learn more about Judaism and what things were like when Jesus was alive. I want to know the meanings of words used n our translations. I am a culture and word freak. I love to learn different cultures and languages. The history.

  75. Kelli Gough says:

Thank you, Jesus, for coming, for sacrificing yourself, for making a way so we might know you and be reconciled to our Heavenly Father. Thank you God for your written word and your word incarnate, Jesus Christ, to guide us through all life on earth brings. Please Lord, help us keep our eyes focused on you, on your kingdom & righteousness. Help us keep an eternal perspective, loving and fearing you instead of fearing man.

  76. Freyjah Fey says:

Jesus is my all and all: my husband, my lover, my brother and my friend. He is my everything and anything, when ever I need Him. He is Superkalafragalistic !

  77. DOROTHY says:

Jesus is my Savior and the One and Only Friend I can truly rely on through thick and thin. He is the One I can turn to no matter what I do or where I go or where I am. I can talk to Him anytime of the day or night. Jesus will not give up on me or turn His back on me. He will not leave me even if I leave Him. I am proud to be called one of His sheep. Have a blessed week my sisters.

  78. CeeGee says:

I, too, an in awe and wonder of who Jesus is. He walked this earth yet He dwells in our hearts! I am not good with words, but this stood out to me in reading Mathew 17. In the midst of this divine occurence, Peter focused on an earthly task. Instead of being swept up in the glory/gift of the moment, he was distracted by what he had to offer. How often do I miss what Jesus wants from me because I am focusing on what I want to do? I realize Peter meant it to honor Jesus, but that was my personal take-away this morning. Bless you ladies as we enter this new week. May we represent Him well in all we do. As our pastor says, “I just want to make God smile!”

  79. Tasha Bryant says:

Who is Jesus?……I have no words to explain His existence in my life…..The only thing that comes to my mind today is a song.
I love you Jesus…I worship and adore you. Just want tell I live you more than anything.
    God is simply delicious

  80. Peggy Pappas says:

He is…so that He might come to have first place in Everything. (Col 1:18) My prayer that He who gave me everything would have first place in all of my life, always.

  81. Christine Salinas says:

I have really struggled the last few months with getting in the word consistently. I was so excited to realize that this study began today. I received my book this weekend but thought I was going to have to wait longer. So this morning, I opened up the app and realized today was the day. As I sat there pondering scripture and answering the prayer questions, I was in awe. He humbled Himself in so many ways so that we could have a relationship with the Living God!! Wow! I’m rejuvenated to be in the Word again and to be reminded of and learn more of how great our God is!!

  82. Carol M says:

Molly Rood… I would be interested to know why the book was a “ Game Changer”…??

    1. Kerry Rowley says:

For me having a tangible book sitting on my table beside my chair helped remind me to do the study. Also I love being able to just write and mark in it without worrying is it “Bible worthy”. I do occasionally take out my Bible and transfer things I’ve written it the book to it. Also now with the podcasts I take notes all over the pages as I’m listening. The book very much enriches my study. At the end of the book there is a place for writing what is going on in your life/the world. I use that as a bit of a journal.

  83. Kerry Rowley says:

I’m so excited to be starting this plan today. One year ago I re-started SRT (I was with them from the start on YouVersion but had drifted away to do other studies) with the M&W: OT study. I bought the book. That was the game changer. I’ve bought every book since and done every study. So I feel I’m celebrating my One Year Anniversary with this study of Jesus. How amazingly fitting. He’s been with me every day but today I can reflect on where we have been together this past year. It’s been a lovely journey. Thank you God of all the blessings you have given me and most important the gift of your Son. Here we go into SRT year #2.

    1. Christine Smith says:

I started last summer with the OT study as well! I’ve been an auto subscriber ever since. Here’s to another year!

  84. Molly Rood says:

“Jesus turned and told Peter, ‘Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me because you’re not thinking about God’s concerns but human concerns.'” This made me stop and ask myself, how often am I concerned with humanly problems? Always. It’s easy to become absorbed in my daily life, rather than surrender it all to God. How fortunate am I that he has patience with me as I learn to navigate this world with him as my compass.

    1. Eliza Thomas says:

Yes! Needed this daily reminder to surrender it all!

  85. Courtney says:

Who is Jesus? Oh, just my EVERYTHING.

  86. Jeanene Rhoden says:

Who is Jesus? Jesus is love. He love us all so much that He sacrifice His life me and you. Christ endured the cross and accepted His assignment, so that we all can experience life and life more abundantly.

  87. Meghan Hampton says:

I’ve had a little bit of a hard time focusing on the good Jesus is doing in my life during the craziness of the pandemic. This was a good reminder to slow down and recognize how blessed I am. He is holding this together. I started a 30 day challenge yesterday to write down 3 things I’m thankful for everyday and am really going to try to reset my mindset when my thoughts go straight to the negative that is happening.

  88. Lissa says:

Jesus, my all! SRT sisters, I need prayers for my former daughter-in-law. She is very ill with an autoimmune disease and it has the doctors puzzled. She has been ill for months. My 4-year-old grandson is at her side, dutifully. My heart is heavy. Please pray for her. Thank you in advance. Peace to you all. I am excited for this study, as well.

    1. Shasta Moczulski says:

Lissa, I read your comment just know and felt prompted by the Lord to reach out. Through real-life experience, I almost lost my son a year ago due to a “medical mystery,” causing his autoimmune diseases.

Because of my son’s experience, and my own, I’m WELL versed in autoimmune disease, not to my credit, but glory to God for opening my mind to comprehend these matters.

If you are comfortable in doing so, will you tell me more about what’s going on with your former DIL?

I made a promise to God to help anyone He leads me to, to comfort with the comfort I’ve received from Christ, and to pass along any knowledge I’ve been given. This vow was made after the Lord led us to discover the root cause of Houston’s affliction.

My son is now thriving! I pray the same healing will come to your former DIL.

  89. Mari V says:

Jesus is our Messiah. Our one and only. I cannot do life without my Jesus! Quick update. I did comment on Saturday but wanted to say it again. Thank you all my beautiful sisters for praying for me regarding my court hearing on Friday. In a nutshell: it did get a little ugly. But God…My GOD was with me! I even was able to mention His name in court.
God was definitely with me! I know it’s because of all your prayers. As a Friday I am now “legally separated“

  90. Taylor says:

Jesus is the King of my heart! The fullness of His Spirit dwells within me. I am never the same. Thank you Lord for your sacrifice so that I could be united with you forever starting the day I accepted you as my Savior. May I live out of the fullness of You today and every day!

  91. Churchmouse says:

Does it not seem that God is still saying to us, about Jesus: “Listen to Him!”?

    Let’s not make Him beg.

  92. Churchmouse says:

Does it not seem that God is still saying this to us about Jesus: “Listen to Him!”?

Let us not make Him beg.

    1. Maricella Smith says:

      Amen

  93. MARTHA HIX says:

    ❤️

  94. Heather Storey says:

Perfect timing! I need a savior who “holds all things together” when my hands are full!

  95. Angie says:

Not a Sunday School answer, the only answer for yesterday, today, and tomorrow… JESUS.

I believe our song leader is the author of this song, that resonates in my heart. “There’s a hunger in my bones, there’s a longing in my soul. So take me deeper than I know. Fill me up and overflow. Cause all I want, is more of You. Holy Spirit come like a fire. Burn in my heart be my desire. Spirit of God fall fresh on me. Pour out your power so I can be. More like You. So come and fill this place once more. Breath of God refresh my soul. Come captivate my heart with You. Lead and guide me with Your Truth. Cause all I want, is more of You. Come revive, come renew. Lead us back to You. Come ignite, come restore. Living God bring life once more. Holy Spirit come like a fire. Burn in my heart be my desire. Spirit of God fall fresh on me. Pour out your power so I can be. More like You.”
Jesus, You are our Savior and Lord. Holy Spirit, dwell in us, make us like You. Father, God, we worship. We adore. Open our eyes. Open our ears. Open our hands…but start Lord God in our hearts…more like You, may we be more like You.

“Ten thousand times I could sing it, there’s ten thousand ways I’ve received it, it never runs out, it never grows cold, just when I thought I’d reached the limit, it keeps pouring out, I’m drowning in it, it won’t shut me out, it won’t let me go, so I’ll keep singing on and on of this grace…” -Joseph Hadebank
Worship Jesus, in Spirit and in truth, He has given us what we do not deserve by filling us with a closeness to Him and sealing us with His Spirit. He is full of grace and truth.
Lord, thank you. You want me. You forgive me. And your grace got me and it won’t let me go. Lord, may I never lose the awe that you sent Jesus, to be with us. To live, to heal, to speak. To be silent, to be afflicted, to die. And to rise to life and walk with His own. Lord, this grace, I have no words to describe it. But thank you!
Please help me to walk in humility and forgiveness. My heart is yours Lord.

John 1:18 just slays me. “No one has ever seen God. The one and only Son, who is himself God and is at the Father’s side – he has revealed him.” That God would give us His Son in the flesh so that we, his creatures, could know him personally just knocks me to my knees. And while I’m on my knees, what can I do but worship?!

I was confused on some parts of Colossians so I looked up some other translations. Here is one:, but I also looked at the NLT version and another: Colossians 1:15–20 (The Message): 15–18 We look at this Son and see the God who cannot be seen. We look at this Son and see God’s original purpose in everything created. For everything, absolutely everything, above and below, visible and invisible, rank after rank after rank of angels—everything got started in him and finds its purpose in him. He was there before any of it came into existence and holds it all together right up to this moment. And when it comes to the church, he organizes and holds it together, like a head does a body.
18–20 He was supreme in the beginning and—leading the resurrection parade—he is supreme in the end. From beginning to end he’s there, towering far above everything, everyone. So spacious is he, so roomy, that everything of God finds its proper place in him without crowding. Not only that, but all the broken and dislocated pieces of the universe—people and things, animals and atoms—get properly fixed and fit together in vibrant harmonies, all because of his death, his blood that poured down from the cross.

The part that really stands out is at the end. All the broken and dislocated pieces of the universe- people and things, animals and atoms- get properly fixed and fit together in vibrant harmonies, all because of his death, his blood that poured down from the Cross.

My pastor stated before communion yesterday that she wasn’t sure how we looked at the Cross. She said that she wasn’t sure how you could look at it without being overwhelmed. (I’m paraphrasing.) She was saying to never get numb to His Sacrifice! That’s my prayer. I want to be moved, changed, amazed, in reverence and awe and even undone when I reflect and think of the Cross. We can’t really fathom what He endured for us! He could have stopped it all. I’ve heard it said the nails didn’t keep Him there, love did!
