Today’s verse really spoke to me. I have been wrestling with an unhealthy romantic relationship and cutting it off. The part of the verse about sound judgment is what got me. I know that even though this hurts and is confusing, God has given me sound judgment to make good decisions for myself, and the power to do so! He is so good.

Kelly (Neo), thank you for asking!! My time with my sister last weekend was good. We had fun playing with the kids, went to an indoor pool, and made cookies. I am disappointed in how my niece acts (throwing tantrums/things she says) and I feel that it could be prevented through proper discipline and teaching. But I’m still praying for them, I wish that I could be more open with my sister, but I think that will come with time. I have not told her yet about my anxiety, but I think I need to work it out first with my parents and then a counselor. Which btw, I have my first virtual counseling appointment on Monday, so prayers definitely appreciated for that!! I came home this weekend for a doctor’s appt to check on if any physical things may be off for me, but I think all is well, main thing is anxiety. Love you all, thankful for our God who is with us always!!

I have been in a weird mood today. I have so many reasons to be joyful, yet I find myself fighting negative thoughts today. I pray I would rest in your peace and joy Jesus.

  29. Dorothy says:

WOW!!! WOOW!!! Does the Lord speak to you when you least expect it. This verse is what I needed to hear today. I just got woke up to a friend upset with another friend. My birthday is 15th so several friends of mine and I are going out to tomorrow to celebrate. Two of them live in the same complex, one is always very negative and the other is trying to not be so all the time. I invited them both b/c they are a part of the group I call “the girls” (there is a guy in the group now b/c he’s married to one of them) and the Rhonda the not so negative one calls me all upset and wakes me up. Well, Judy, the other one (who has no boundaries), and she were going to be picked up by Angie, Judy’s daughter, and her hubby and I was to take them home b/c Rhonda doesn’t have a car. Judy has a car but just doesn’t want to drive very often I guess. Well, I’m not sure what the argument was about, I missed that part b/c I was still waking up, but I was told by Rhonda that Judy doesn’t want to ride with her. So here I am trying to calm Rhonda down and make sense of it. I told Rhonda okay we will figure something out. I called Angie, who at the time was talking to her mom. After Angie finished talking to Judy she called me and Judy is either driving herself or not coming. I guess I am telling you all of this sisters is b/c I’m asking for prayer for the whole situation, for my friends to get along so I can have a nice birthday celebration and for there not to be any kind of drama tomorrow.
Be blessed and remember to love and not fear because God is near sisters.

I have been in Florida visiting 3 different sets of friends. It was a welcome reprieve from grief. Not everything reminded me of Tanner there. I clearly thought of him, but I wasn’t falling apart. God is good. He knew I needed that rest. On the plane I caught up on this study. I found how much I missed doing it every morning. I thought I would still be able to, but found it hard with others around.

  31. PamC says:

Like you, Patty S., I went to look up this verse to see how many different ways it was said because I’d learned it with “self-control”. I loved the Message that said, “God doesn’t want us to be shy with His gifts, but bold, and loving, and sensible.” Changes the perspective completely, doesn’t it? This has long been a verse I cling to because it seems my “no” switch, my “I have everything I need”, etc switches have been broken and my self control is toast! Could use some prayer there if you think about it. Thanks.
Have a blessed and peace filled weekend She’s.
    Hugs & love to all.

  35. PattyS says:

Being older and attending church when the King James bible was mostly used, I learned this verse ending with…and a sound mind. Its a favorite Scripture of mine. It struck me that having or using ‘sound judgment’ is a bit different than having a ‘sound mind.’ ‘Sound mind’ seemed to me something for ME to apply to ME, whereas ‘sound judgment’ sounds like something I may apply in dealing with other people or situations. I got curious and looked up 2 Timothy 1:7 in several versions of Scripture and found even more interpretations:

KJV, NKJV, and YLT all say sound mind

    NLT and NIV use self-discipline

NASB20 and 95 just say discipline

ESV, NET, and RSV use the phrase self-control

and my personal favorite…DBY says wise discretion! (Side note: DBY also uses ‘spirit of cowardice’ instead of spirit of fear!!)

I was an English major in college and am sort of a word nerd still, and for me, looking at different versions of Scripture can add a lot to my study of God’s word. Thankful for His Word every day!

    1. Anastasia McLeod says:

I love the etymology of things as well! Thanks for posting this here. I find it helps a lot too as our use of words isn’t the same as they once were and it’s very easy to misinterpret, not to mention our choice of words when translating isn’t necessarily the right translation of the original language

  36. Rachel says:

God does not give us a spirit of fear, which then leads me to question…if He doesn’t give that, then where does it come from? I have to assume that it’s from His adversary who “prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. ” (I Peter 5:8). The beginning of that verse starts with “Be sober-minded; be watchful…” And then I realized that while it’s not the same word in Greek as the one used in our verse today, it’s similar. “Sound judgment” has also been translated as “sober minded, disciplined, self-control, a sound mind.” Satan is a bully and he plays for keeps. BUT he has no power over those who are in Christ unless we hand it to him!! Not today, Satan! :) We spend time in His word and in this He gives us wisdom and truth which then brings discernment and a sound mind (along with power! and love!) – all of which are antidotes for fear. We are not victims. We are not captives. We are daughters of the Most High God who bought our freedom with the precious blood of His Son. Praising the Lord for HIs word and truth today! Happy Saturday, She’s!

KARRIE – There are so many! Joshua 1:9 – This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
Psalm 46:10- Be still and know that I am God…
Psalm 16:8 – I know the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.
Psalm 37:7 – Be still in the presence of the Lord, and wait patiently for him to act.
Joshua 1:9 – This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 – Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. 7 Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.
Deuteronomy 20:4 – For the Lord your God is going with you! He will fight for you against your enemies, and he will give you victory!

    Karrie,
I highly recommend “Fierce Women” by Kimberly Wagner and her husband LeRoy’s book “Men Who Love Fierce Women”. Don’t be put off by the title; it’s chock full of humbling truths about a marriage that is pleasing to Christ. Each speaks beautifully through the eyes of both spouses while targeting individual root sins to address. The Lord was kind to use these books to open our eyes and rescue our marriage. May you be blessed moving forward.

  42. Karrie says:

Good morning ladies, I’m in need of this study so much lately. My husband and I are working very hard to restore our marriage. We r living in 2 separate homes and are trying to go back and forth and figure it out but it is so overwhelming!!! My girls are very cold to my husband, I pray that they will come around and accept the situation sooner than later. I have been fighting depression off and on lately. On the verge of tears most days. I’m exhausted and overwhelmed. I am trying so hard to give it all to God to deal with but I’m struggling. Any suggestions or verses to mediate on? Thank u for your prayers Kelly (neo). ❤️

  43. Jessi says:

One of my favorite verses! Praying for you Barbara. ❤️

  44. Donna says:

I think about the things that make me afraid sometimes – being powerless, unloved, and allowing the enemy to fill my mind with irrational thoughts…. this verse is such a blessing! The Holy Spirit empowers us to do things He calls us to do that we feel inadequate to do in our own strength, or to face circumstances that we feel overwhelmed by… the Holy Spirit fills our life with His love so we don’t have to base our feelings of self-worth on other people. They need Jesus to fill them, too. He fills us so that His love overflows from us! And when our thoughts become irrational and fixated on the negative, the Holy Spirit gives us a sound mind and fills our thoughts with truth that sets us free! What a gift!

  45. Melissa Mcronney says:

    Amen

  47. Kelly (NEO) says:

Sound judgment is truly a blessing from the Lord especially when the current cultural climate seems to be one of extremes that does not allow for nuances or grace.

One of the best things I have rediscovered lately is The Pause App developed by author John Eldridge’s team. It’s a wonderful way to pause and look at God as the one you trust. It starts by unlocking a one minute pause where you hear John say, “Father, I give everything to you. I give everyone and everything to you…” It has been a powerful reminder for me to open my hands that are clutching for control. God has my people and my circumstances. It is a free app that I would highly recommend giving a try.

  50. Sherry McCollum says:

When I have heard this verse quoted, I have heard the power and love but sound judgement seems to get left off. For some reason that is resonating with me . I have been thinking about it for a bit. I know what it means but I really want to fully understand what it means in my situation (s) to overcome fear, which God has definitely not given me, if that makes any sense. Because my heart’s desire is to follow Him and His plan.

  51. Josie Smith says:

Holy Spirit, thank you for your wisdom and sound judgment. Help us listen.

  52. Barbara Isabell says:

I started memorizing this verse serval months ago incorporating in my prayers in the morning with my children before they head to school and I went about my work day! Little did I know that God gave this verse to me for a reason. To help me through some things that I am going through now. I praise God for his word and his timing. I would appreciate some prayers !

  53. Dana says:

I just love when verses hit different even after you’ve read them for years. Tonight I feel this verse like I never have before and I feel strengthened to accept it, believe it and embrace it. Thank You Father. I hear You. Amen.
