Deuteronomy 7:1-16, Hebrews 9:1-28, 2 Corinthians 1:20

This Is the Old Testament is part of a twelve-week thematic overview of the entire Bible. As we read, we’ll gain a broader understanding of the redemptive story of Scripture. Each day we’ll read a thematic selection from a different book of the Bible, along with supplemental passages that show how the theme of that day’s main reading is found throughout Scripture. We’ll also read a brief summary of each book and a reflection on how the book fits into the larger story of Scripture.

What Is Deuteronomy? The book of Deuteronomy, meaning “second law” or “repetition of the law,” contains commentary on the law given to Moses at Mount Sinai, which equipped the covenant community of Israel with instruction on how to live faithfully in their covenant with God. In Deuteronomy, Moses repeats the law to the new generation of Israelites preparing to enter into the promised land after forty years of wandering in the wilderness.

How Deuteronomy Fits Into the Story: Deuteronomy emphasizes the need for God’s law to be internalized into the hearts and minds of God’s people. After the books of Psalms and Isaiah, the New Testament alludes to Deuteronomy more than any other book in the Old Testament. Jesus and the apostles considered the book of Deuteronomy to be vital in their own teaching about God and His relationship with His chosen people and all of humanity. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He quoted Deuteronomy to rebuke Satan (Lk 4:1–13).

Reflection Questions:
1. How does your reading in Deuteronomy point to God’s faithfulness, holiness, and justice as motivation for obedience to the law?
2. How does today’s reading shape your understanding of the story of redemption?

Take time to reflect on your responses and share what you are learning with others in the community in the comments.

  2. Karen Roper says:

Obedience to God is key. The laws were given so we could see them in written form but God wants our obedience to stem from our heart for Him.

We are called to be in this world, but not of it, just like the Israelites.

Deuteronomy 7 just speaks so much love to me today, especially the verse, “you shall be blessed above all people” (Deuteronomy 7:14). How great is God’s plan for His children. BLESSED ABOVE ALL. ABOVE ALL. Amazing God. Who is like You God? Thank you thank you thank you for your goodness.

Dorothy, my go-to verses/passages for encouragement would be Psalm 23, Psalm 34, and Psalm 121. (The LORD is your keeper, the LORD is your shade on your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your life. The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forth and forevermore. Psalm 121: 5-8). I am loving the all verses and songs suggested. Such strength is imparted on us when we share the anchor verses in our lives that keep us through the storms. Thank you Dorothy for requesting this for your sister (God bless your heart) so that we too can benefit from this. Bless you all dear sisters. Have a wonderful weekend wherever you are!

Heidi, praying for your brother’s marriage.

So beautifully said everyone. Thank you for sharing all the songs & verses today. I think we’ll all have a long play list and verse readings for comfort. Mine is always the 23rd Psalm. My grandmother taught it to me when I was little and I’ve clung to it most of my life it seems. It always reminds me of her. Rae-Ann thank you for bringing Churchmouse’s comments over.
It’s been a rushed morning week for me. I’m sorry to have not gotten back to y’all sooner to thank you for your prayers and let you know the results. The numbers were good …. I should say “improved”… I have to find the the right balance of meds, foods, etc. so that I can keep my kidneys strong enough that I can manage an aleeve now & then rather than having to rely on opioids for chronic pain & inflammation. I appreciated your prayers a lot!
Sending hugs and prayers to all y’all for a blessed weekend.

I am excited to know that we are going to study Deuteronomy in a few months. I have never really read much of it and don’t no much of what is in it. I found the explanation about it interesting and lately have been wanting to learn more about some of these Old Testament books.
I’m thankful Jesus came and died for my sins and I don’t have to give a sacrifice of various kinds.
Lord, I give thanks for all You have given me. I give thanks for a wonderful, loving biological family and a wonderful, loving Christian family. I rejoice for the open and loving arms of the SRT community. Lord, bless all my Christian sisters through out the world, watch over them and those who need your help, help them. Amen.
