just to be reminded today of what Jesus went through for me. he was mocked, whipped, beaten and crucified for me. now that’s love. matthew 27. this chapter always takes me back to the video Jesus is loving barabbas by judah smith.

  2. mel b says:

“You must treat them as holy because they offer up food to your God. You must consider them holy because I, the Lord, am holy, and I make you holy.”
    ‭‭Leviticus‬ ‭21:8‬ ‭NLT‬‬

““You must faithfully keep all my commands by putting them into practice, for I am the Lord.”
    ‭‭Leviticus‬ ‭22:31‬ ‭NLT‬‬

  3. Rose Vanderschel says:

I am strict with all the warnings of the High priest to remain Holy. How he could not be around or touch someone unclean and yet Jesus the Great High Priest touched many who were unclean and dead. He alone brought life and healing!

  8. Britt Clark says:

The world wanted Barabbas to live; this shows that the world loves sin and darkness. So many people desire peace and equality and love but they are seeking everything but Jesus. I am a sinner, I am guilty, I am Barabbas

Reading the words of how my Savior was tortured and beaten for my sins breaks my heart every single time. His humble obedience is the reason I pursue to be the best I can be each day; to be who I’m called to be. I’m humbled by and ever grateful for his great love for me.

I’m way behind right now, and it worked out that I’m reading this passage in Matthew on Good Friday. I think that it’s no coincidence and that God for sure wanted me to read this today!

  20. Kendra Koelsch says:

Every time I sin, I am nailing Jesus Christ, my Savior, back up on the cross. My heart trembles and hurts because of that. Lord Jesus, thank you for your sacrifice and forgiveness that I could never deserve.

  22. Lois Shaw says:

I am struck by the emotional torment Jesus went through, in addition to the physical pain. As he was hurting, he was made fun of, mocked…I can’t imagine how lonely that was. Praise Jesus for his complete sacrifice for us.

  23. Sarah Johnson says:

Jesus makes no reply to the charges against him, though he is the most innocent person to walk the face of the earth. I can’t imagine the humility and trust in God it takes to not defend yourself against charges that are not true.

  24. E Hong says:

11Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus said, “You have said so.” -ellie

Oops. Sorry about that, I must have hit a button while reading everyone’s insightful posts.

  26. ragamuffin says:

Worthy is the lamb! Our perfect, sinless ,spotless substitute! Jesus paid it all, and all to him I owe, sin has left a guilty stain, but he washed it white as snow. And when before the throne, we stand in him complete. Jesus died for our soul to save, so my lips shall still repeat that Jesus paid it all. Thank you Father for the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord. John 3:16

  27. Kylee says:

Matthew 26:25 “And all the people answered, ‘his blood be on us and on our children!” …and oh, how it is. What a chilling scene. Imagine the roar of voices, a riot on the brink of breaking out. So much anger in that crowd….All to condemn the man who came from heaven to save the world. And God saw it all. I cannot fathom the weight of it all.

    1. Lauren says:

      I felt this too

  28. Ryann says:

It is truly amazing that we a sinful people are loved so much by a pure God! Thank you God for you consistent, compassionate love! Thank you for your son and loving us even when we have fallen short!

  29. Vickie says:

God is so AMAZING! As you read Leviticus and all the ways you have to be clean to approach God! He had a plan all along , He knew we could never live up to all that . He knew He was sending the perfect sacrifice JESUS so that believing in Jesus and what He has done for us it is through Him that the veil is torn and we can approach our Holy God! All through Leviticus He repeatedly says ” I AM LORD who makes them holy” Praise Jesus!

  30. Britney says:

When reading in Leviticus about how the prostitutes and those with defects, it struck me how before Jesus they were were not allowed near Gods sanctuary-the holy place. When Jesus came, they were no longer cast aside as “unclean” but touched and healed by Jesus. What a clear picture of how he was separated from us by our sin but then made a way to come to US. Wow. Praise God

    1. Stephanie says:

Thank you for sharing that! I was struck by the definition of being unclean in this reading and confused because aren’t we all considered God’s children? But your comments helped clarify for me.

  31. Savannah says:

What I got from Leviticus today: “I am the Lord. I am Holy. I make you holy. You should strive to to be like me, but I am the One who makes you holy”

  32. Ashlee E says:

I can’t imagine the sadness jesus felt as the people he came to save shouted “crucify him!” He had so much compassion for each person who shouted that and even us today when we “shout” that with our actions when we sin. Thanking the Lord for grace and forgiveness and His perfect plan.

  33. Gabrielle says:

Jesus is so good. Everyday I need to be reminded of how much I need Him. He is the perfect example of love and the perfect vision of God. How incredible it is to be able to read his Word and talk to Him

  34. Meaghan says:

Reading through Levicticus makes me so grateful and humbled by the cross. All throughout these chapters God repeats “for I am the Lord who sancitifies you.” I can’t sanctify myself but God offers me the gift through Jesus’ sacrifice.

  35. “His blood shall be on us and our children!” How amazing and ironic that even as Jesus’ bloodguilt is on their heads, His blood redeems them as a peace offering to the Father God. They claimed responsibility for His murder as he was claiming responsibility for their every wrong.

    1. I don’t think I ever saw that irony before. Amazing.

  36. Siyanda says:

Go through Leviticus, seeing how holy God is, how high and absolutely perfect His standards are. Standards we never could meet no matter how sincere our efforts. In steps Jesus to fulfil God’s righteous demands perfectly ! Making a way for us to be reconciled to God and fellowship with Him now and forevermore! Oh the mercy and love of God…

  37. Nicole says:

Each year on Palm Sunday we read the Passion (Matthew) as our gospel – this is the first year that I fully understand what Jesus did for me, for us. I am so thankfully for finding SRT and so grateful for the amazing, intelligent women participating in the reading of the bible. Your comments have turned on a light bulb in me and because of you all I am finally understanding the rituals of my Catholic upbringing and mass (instead of just going through the motions). I feel so blessed that I get to raise my 3 young children with the knowledge I am going from you all. God bless and thank you all again I look forward to my reading each morning and reading through your comments throughout the day.

  38. Caroline says:

Doing my bible study on the bus as I head to work today. Tears as I read Matthew. So much to take in. Thank you so much our amazing God for sending your only son and allowing us to mock, beat and crucify him (we are so, so awful), thank you for teaching us all about salvation and love, thank you Jesus for being willing to come and steadfastly and silently paying for all of my sins. The love is God really is beyond comprehension, simply amazing.

  39. Colleen says:

The law was given to show us that there was no way we could keep it… Jesus was given, willingly, to fulfill it completely. Leviticus is a challenge to get through, but I was struck this morning by the detail of the law and how it is impossible to keep – and how some Jews today are still trying. Jesus – the perfect sacrifice and God’s perfect plan to bring us back to Himself. Hallelujah Jesus!

  40. Jennifer says:

Reading this was a reminder of the Lord’s humility. Not only did He lower Himself to be limited as a human being, but to be able to be pushed to such a low point by society, the world..He experienced so much negativity : the betrayal of a disciple, being “voted” lower than a man such as Barrabbas. Most of us would cringe at the thought of even ourselves being thought of in the same sentence as such a man. Our Lord is so worthy of all our praise, and His love is so limitless. Hallelujah for His righteousness.

  41. Antimony says:

Mt 27:23, 25 And he said, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they kept shouting all the more, saying, “Crucify Him!” … And all the people said, “His blood shall be on us and on our children!” Did they know what they were demanding? Demanding that their promised Messiah be killed? And that they would bear the guilt? Yes, they would bear the guilt. As would each human ever born. The One “Person” to fulfill Gods law perfectly. To live for 33 years without ever sinning. And we killed Him. He died innocently. For us.

  42. I am struggling with the whole defect thing. If God is creator and doesn’t make mistakes why would these defects happen back then and why would they be shunned for something they are born with. This chapter has me sad.

    1. Jill says:

To me it is to point is even more to Jesus Christ! He makes us perfect, inside and out. The law was established to show that no one was worthy of being in the presence of God. No one can live under the law and be saved. We needed a perfect blood sacrifice. And praise God we live under Jesus and His grace, not under the law which only points out our flaws, our sins, our imperfect nature….physically and spiritually.

    2. Heather says:

Without sin in the world, yes, all of God’s creation would be perfect without defect or blemish. But once sin entered the world, all of creation suffered. Nothing is perfect anymore. But God is also still sovereign over all. Perhaps God has a different purpose for those who had defects. He has a plan for everyone, not all are called to serve as the priests, but everyone is called to do something.
I don’t know if you’ve heard of him, but there is a guy named Nick Vuijivic (sp?) who was born with no arms and no legs, and he now has an amazing ministry going around and speaking! Thousands of lives have been touched by him, and that would not have happened if he had been born “normal”.
      Just a different perspective! :)

      1. Love nick! Good point.

    3. Linda says:

The defects may not have all been from birth. Lameness and injuries could happen in travel and fights. But what I take from this was that we give the best to God not our unwanted. The men with defects were still allowed to eat, just not offer the sacrifice. In a way, that left the defective animal to be cared for, to live. Maybe this can tell us again that each one has a purpose?

    4. Ruth D says:

It made me sad at first, but then the more I thought about the purpose of all these laws, the more it made sense. Deformities and blemishes are marks of humanity’s sinfulness. And our God is holy beyond all other things. So sin cannot be in His presence. So I don’t think God saying that those with deformities could not be in the Holy of Holies was coming from a lack of love for them (especially since He made sure they were still provided for and were allowed to eat the priests’ food) but instead was just a command to protect His holiness. Hope this helps!

  43. Journey To Freedom says:

I am enjoying this bible reading plan. The insights that are revealed by reading the New and Old Testament at the same time. In today’s reading Old Testament, the Lord gives instructions on how a priest should act to remain holy and then in the New Testament reading our high priest personifies holiness as the actual sacrifice. Amazing!

    1. Elisha says:

me too. when reading the scripure fome Matthew, I couldn’t help but think back to Leviticus – how God demanded sacrifices without blemish. and the perfection of Jesus.

    2. Catherine says:

Yes! Love this – humility personified.

  44. Carie says:

Reading Leviticus is hard! The law was given to Israel to set them apart, but today’s passage repeats over and over…I am the Lord, who makes you holy! So thankful my holiness comes from Him! I could never keep these laws! Never! Reading the law then reading of the sacrifice he made on my behalf elevates my worship! Thank you Jesus!

    1. Catherine says:

Yes! Such a great point, Carie. I too have been struggling a bit thru Leviticus, but it gives such important context to what happens in Matthew. The Jews had been taught to keep God’s law and here was Jesus turning everything upside-down. I’ve always thought of the law as a demonstration of our humanity – and Jesus as the atonement for our inability to keep it.

      1. Britt says:

So well put, it gave me such peace to see your perspective.

  45. Jennifer says:

25 All the people answered, “His blood is on us and on our children!”

    Wow

    1. Jess says:

I took a big gasp in when I read that… Did they have any idea the gravity of what they said???

    2. Britt Biddinger says:

That stopped me too. How blessed we are because His blood is on us, to read about the perfect sacrifices in Leviticus & then read about true perfection sacrificed for us – whose blood is on us & cleanses our sin. It’s breathtaking; deepest sadness & deepest gratitude in one moment. Praise the Lord that He is faithful to Himself.

  46. Abby says:

I’m amazed with how Jesus stayed silent. How strong he kept himself — what an amazing Lord we have. It’s kind of how the world has always been.. We have the choice of having Jesus or something else and people go for the something else even though Jesus is being given to them. How sad He must be seeing His children turn away from Him..

  47. Jess says:

Our precious Lord suffered so greatly for love’s sake and didn’t say a word… Our King who deserved all glory and honour humbled himself to be beaten, spat on, and mocked. I can’t describe how I feel about this. It’s just time to bow down and worship.

    1. Cecalee says:

Amen. I have such a heavy heart & I am so blessed to have an amazing Lord to have died on the old rugged cross for my sins.
