He wants pure hearts. He is fair. He has good plans. He gives chances. He warns us. He pays attention. He is just. He equips us and wants us to work together. He wins. He strengths us. He loves obedience.
This verse in Jeremiah echos the voices of people who say things like, “It will be normal again soon.” As if “normal” is good, and our personal, communal and global strife doesn’t demand reconciliation: 14They dress the wound of my people
as though it were not serious.
‘Peace, peace,’ they say,
when there is no peace.
God is a god of peace and rest, but also a god who can crush Satan under his feet and bring righteous wrath upon a whole country. What an amazing God to have on our team, fighting for us and interceding on our behalf.
23But this command I gave them: ‘Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people. And walk in all the way that I command you, that it may be well with you.’
I love how even though the city is being condemned for doing wrong, the lord still says that with everything he is doing, he is bringing peace that will crush satan
In this passage in Jeremiah, Judah is particularly condemned for serving other gods and then coming before the One True God. May we also know that it is blasphemous to serve two masters. Oh Lord, help us not to seek to worship the world and then desire spirituality before You. You are God alone and the Lord Jesus is alone Master over our lives.
27 “I have made you an assayer and a tester among My people, That you may know and assay their way.”
Do I do this? Do I use the gift of right judgement, wisdom and knowledge given to me at my baptism to recognize the way of the lord in everyone I meet? Or do I give into flattery and affirmation too easily? Lord reaffirm in my spirit a wisdom to assay the ways of my self and mankind.
doing exactly what verse 16 says – looking to the Word for the examples of those who walked in the good way, the ancient paths of earlier prophets, and choose to walk in the same faith-driven obedience. That starts right here making time for the Lord and filling ourselves with truth each day (even if you’re a day behind like me!) to give us perspective for the circumstances the Lord has each of us in.
Jer 6:13 13 For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them every one is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.
In what ways am I also covetous ? All of Christendom appears to be infected with this idolatrous sin. We want all we don’t have and go after any form of thought or practice we think will bring us benefit.
I may not be baking cakes for the queen of heaven but am I truly content with such as the true LORD has blessed me with? Am I content with my job? No not really. Am I content with my house? No, I am usually thinking of ways to improve it. Am I content with plain food or do I desire all organic food brought from far away? Yes I do remember the Proverbs 31 wife brining food from afar, but at what cost? Shall the world go without Bibles that I may live in luxury ?
Is not the widespread obesity and indebtedness just an outward sign of idolatry?
My prayer and meditation today is on the goodness of my Savior. How excellent are His ways. He will supply all my need and I can rest in Him.
Yes, Amen! This is so challenging when we have easy access to so many things. I was struck by the lack of obedience in Jeremiah, but also how Paul exhorted the Roman church for their obedience. It is key to staying on track with the Lord: hearing and obeying.
Took me time to read all of the feedback, but I actually loved the article. It proved to be very useful to me and I am sure to all the commenters here! It is always good when you can’t solely learn, but in addition engaged! I’m sure you had pleasure writing this article. Anyway, in my language, there aren’t a lot good source like this.
What an honor (that went against the customs and traditions of the day ) it was for Paul to list specific women for recognition and praise. Jesus loves women and they can and do mighty works for the Kingdom
I love the words in Romans 16:27 “to the only wise God.” Especially with all of the OT readings where we see people repeatedly turning to gods they create. He is the only God, wise and powerful. Even today though, it’s easy to replace our need for God wit things that bring us temporary satisfaction. I have been thinking about that a lot as we read through the OT. It’s easy to judge them for stepping away from the Lord..but don’t we do the same, just in a different manner? Today I am thankful that we worship and study the word of “the only wise God..” Can I get an amen? ;-)
The problem: 5 Why then has this people turned away in perpetual backsliding? They hold fast to deceit; they refuse to return…22 Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then has the health of the daughter of my people not been restored?
The solution: 25 Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ…26…made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith— 27 to the only wise God be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ! Amen
God, In Christ, by the Holy Spirit brings about the obedience of faith. So thankful for a God who redeems and restores- who remains faithful to make a way when we are faithless!
Amen! Don’t you love God has made the scriptures to be so complete, we lack nothing that pertains to life and godliness. It’s all here for us, in black and white (and red)!

We need to take notice of these warnings, individually and as a nation. God will still punish the disobedient.
