  6. Kori Phillips says:

“Mary” That’s all he had to say, and she knew exactly who he was. He could have shown up at any time and revealed his resurrection to anyone. But he chose Mary – a woman – as the first person to see him for herself. She was there, following him and listening to him throughout his ministry, and she was even there as he hung on the cross and died. She loved her Lord. What an honor to be the one he meets first.

  7. Kori Phillips says:

“Mary” That’s all he had to say, and she knew exactly who he was. He could have shown up at any time and revealed his resurrection to anyone. But he chose Mary – a woman who was broken when he met her, and who stayed by his side until

Received news yesterday that angered me in a way I haven’t been in a long time…. was really struggling with working through my anger and praying last night before bed. Heard the Lord say “70 times 7.” Dreamed about Joseph forgiving his family… I’m several weeks behind in the reading plan so just completed this day today. Read again about how Joseph forgave his family members. Trusting God to help me forgive in this manner as well. Praise Jesus for redemption.

Believing brings us life in His name. So much packed into that statement.

  20. Ashley Martin says:

What lovely scripture of forgiveness. I always hear the words “I can forgive but will not forget”. Is that really the Christian thing to do? May we always be humble and always believe in the Lord. I have not placed my finger in His nail scarred hands like Thomas, but I feel so at peace in my belief. Thank you, Lord. ❤️

  21. Britt Clark says:

You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good… what a powerful word

  22. Oceanna King says:

Forgiveness ❤️ I’m ashamed to admit I might have a harder time forgiving my brothers than Joseph did if they sold me into slavery. But as Jesus says, we will be forgiven the same amount in which we forgive. A humbling reminder.

  23. Dianne Pacewicz says:

  24. Susan Dexter says:

I love that John tells us, this is just a snippet of what Jesus did while He walked among the people. He did so much more, and when I start to doubt that my circumstance may be insignificant to him, that’s when I need to trust and believe in the power of the resurrection all the more, because He did, can and will do more in my life than I can possibly imagine. Thank you for a great reading and start to the weekend! ❤️

  25. Liz Kuster says:

I love how the first person to know the good news of the resurrection is a woman. It’s funny, the woman to bring the good news into the world when she gave birth to Jesus was named Mary. Now, the woman who shares the good news of Jesus’s triumph over death is also named Mary.

What an amazing time to be in His presence. I love the book of John and how it speaks to me. The doubting, the questioning, and then the undeniable faith. So thankful to have Jesus in my life and someone that knows my path even though I do not ❤️❤️

Joseph forgave his brothers long before they ever asked for forgiveness, because He truly believed that God put him in Egypt at that time for a specific reason.

  35. Rachael Hebblethwaite says:

Both of these passages of scripture speak to the things that people mean for harm, but God uses for good.
I pray that I would look at the bigger picture of my life and see the good God is doing and has done and believe that he is doing good even in the hard times.

    1. Laura Andersen says:

Yes!! Love how you connected these two passages.

  36. Maclane Bever says:

And that by believing, you may have life in His name.

  37. Arique Aguilar says:

    ☑️

  38. Inez Lee says:

Blessed are those who have not seen but yet believe❤️ I like that the Bible list all of these signs and miracles of Jesus for us to read about but it’s all in believing what you cannot see.

  39. Victoria O says:

29Jesus said, “Because you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.” ❤️

  41. Lori Brock says:

10“The scepter shall not depart from Judah,
Nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,
    Until Shiloh comes,
And to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.
19So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
~until SHILOH comes-peace be with you
31but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.
~life in His name, what a wonderful, beautiful name, the name of Jesus!

  42. Sarah Johnson says:

It’s crazy when John says there are many more miracles performed by Jesus that the Bible just doesn’t have space for. That sentence made me realize if I were lucky enough to see Jesus I would have written a gigantic book about it, too!

  43. Julia Templeman says:

Got a bit behind but I’m catching up today!

  45. Steph C says:

“But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (20:31). This was the whole purpose of the Gospel message. To reveal the deity of Christ and His desire and power to save!

  46. Steph C says:

“As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today” (50:20). Again, He saw the hand of God instead of a set of “bad circumstances”. Father, give me eyes of faith so that I will look for your hand even in the darkest times!

  47. Casey Hicks says:

  53. Ashley Adkins says:

I love the pairing today. At the end of Joseph’s life he reminds his brothers of God’s promise. He reaffirms that God will deliver His people to the promised land. In John, we see the God’s promise to reconcile man to Him kept. He is faithful in all things!!

Chills. And to think he knows my name. He knows me.

    4. Emma Johnson says:

Yes!! It reminds me of John 10 where Jesus says he is the Good Shepard who knows His sheep and whose sheep know Him and recognize His voice as He calls them by name and leads them out

  57. Gracie Bonham says:

    Done❤️

  58. Tolu says:

Jesus is FOR us. He made the ultimate sacrifice so that we could join the family. “…go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.” (John 20:17b). That statement is SO powerful!

  59. Librarian Laura says:

And why do Biblical scholars speculate that Mary didn’t recognize Jesus at first?

    1. Ashley says:

14 And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.
15 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.
16 Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.

She though that he was a gardener, which is why Bible scholars say she didn’t recognize him at first.

      1. Ingrid Cey says:

This is one of a few cases where Jesus does not allow himself to be recognized at first. Another is in the end of Luke during the story of the first to ammaeus.

  60. Librarian Laura says:

What does it mean when Jesus says that the disciplines can choose to not forgive people?

    1. Kathleen says:

      Maybe if they haven’t repented.

  61. Kari says:

31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

    Amen.

  62. Blair Smith says:

It’s truly amazing to see how things transpired and how when she was weeping he said for her not to weep. Jesus is so good to us and doesn’t want us to cry. My favorite is when he said have you believed because you seen me? Blessed are those who believe but have not seen. And it is true seeing is not believing. Believing is seeing.

  63. Lisa Ann says:

Yesterday I was grieving and sad for the treatment and death of our Savior. Today I reflected on my personal walk of faith, still thirsting, still hungry for more truth and that this app helps to explain what I had not understood before or that other women of faith share their understanding or point out something I missed reading, and yes ask questions that I have not asked because I did not want to feel stupid. The word brings us closer to God and our Lord but it is also building their church.

    .

  64. Chika says:

The gravity of our responsibility always overwhelm me whenever I read this verses…21-23. When have so much to do and God has trusted us with so much. I pray we do not disappoint Him.

  65. Janna Laubscher says:

I love that Jesus chose to use a woman to appear to first. In fact, he chose a woman who had once been a prostitute to be the first person he appeared to. He spoke to her and then she spoke to the disciples! So beautiful! He showed so much dignity to women during that time, a time where women were not always shown the respect they deserve.

  66. BRicci says:

I agree with you, Kristen! I thought it was interesting that when the disciples entered the tomb, they saw the burial clothes…but when Mary entered after, the Angels appeared to her. And that she only recognized Jesus when he called her by name. S

  67. Savannah says:

Interesting to note that the disciples had doubts too, but Jesus helped them to overcome them. God helps me to overcome my doubts too!

  68. Kristen says:

I love how Mary was the first to learn of Jesus’ arrival through God sending an angel and now imagining the questioning and sorrow she felt in wondering back on this promise as she mourned his death…the faithfulness of God in hearing her cry and caring enough that she is also the first to see Jesus and met by not one but two angels this time to reassure her. Our God is so great and personal too!

  69. Emerson says:

30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
That is so amazing!!! I had know idea that some things Jesus did are not in the bible. Wow!

  70. Kay says:

John 20:29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

2 Corinthians 5:7 For we walk by faith, not by sight.

Absolutely love the consistency of God’s word! It’s so incredible to read and study and gain new insights each day. Thank you Lord for giving me a deeper look at your word, the truth, and law.

  71. Chelsea says:

I’m in awe of Joseph’s forgiveness towards his brothers but I have a question. We are always told to leave justice up to God rather than take it in our own hands, which obviously Joseph did but God never brings justice upon his brothers…is this because they are truly sorry and repent and therefore God doesn’t feel it necessary to bring justice or?? I wonder about that in my own life to people who have caused me harm even if good came from it…

    1. KK says:

Chelsea – this is a pretty delayed response, but your question reminds me of a passage in The Horse and His Boy by C.S? Lewis. As Shastar is trying to get to King Loon to warn him about Prince Rabadash, he encounters Aslan along the path. Aslan begins telling Shastar’s story. When Shastar tries to ask him about someone else, Aslan replies, “I tell no one any story but his own.” While I would like to know justice has been served, I recognize that God has been gracious and merciful to me through Jesus.

    2. Rachel says:

This is also a delayed response, but I think that God showed His grace and forgiveness through Joseph, and that was His way of showing it before He sent Jesus. But also, I believe that God showed justice through Jacob when he gave each of his sons a prophecy. Each of the sons that did serious wrong ended up paying for it, as did their descendants.

  72. Diya T. says:

Joseph’s life is a preview of what Jesus Christ will accomplish for humankind… teary eyed**

    1. Emerson says:

I completely agree Diya! It is almost like Joseph was meant to foreshadow Jesus!!!

  73. Emily J says:

I thought about the cultural and historical significance of Jesus choosing to reveal himself first to Mary. Out of everyone he could have come to first, he chose a woman, and a woman who was looked down upon by society. It makes me think that His ways aren’t our ways and He can’t be put into a box. You’d think he would have chosen one of the male disciples so that no one would doubt the truth in what they saw, but Jesus chose Mary to deliver the good news

  74. Samantha says:

This chapter of John always brings to mind the song “I’ve Just Seen Jesus” by the Gaithers/Sandy Patti/Larnelle Harris. The lyrics, like Mary Magdalene’s reaction, are so very poignant. “I’ve just seen Jesus, and all I’ve ever done before, won’t matter anymore. I’ve just seen Jesus and I’ll never be the same again!”

  75. Jessica says:

I love SRT studies, and am so enjoying this reading plan. Question: which disciple is John speaking of when he says the one Jesus loved? I know I have learned this along the way, but can’t recall.

    1. Emily says:

It’s John himself. Which is kind of interesting he would refer to himself that way, but it’s also cool to see how close of a relationship john had with Jesus.

    2. Fran says:

      John is referring to himself

  76. Angie says:

Leah’s story always moves me. In this reading we see that it is Leah, not Rachel who was buried alongside Jacob. Leah, who was unloved and had to watch as her husband loved her sister more. Yet here, in the end Jacob gives her this place if honor. God honors her even more by Christ coming through her son Judah. God sees the unloved, and in the end justice arrives. Poignant!

    1. autumn says:

My heart always breaks for her too! Once I heard person conjecture that Jacob buries her there because he knew she was the one God had given, even if she had not been his first choice. Regardless, it is reassuring to know God saw her plight and honored her.

    2. I didn’t even think of that. So true.

  77. Amy says:

This is AWESOME!! Genesis 49:10-12 is one of the first if not THE first foreshadowings of The Messiah! Just blowing my mind that all the way back in Genesis God was pointing towards Christ coming! And then to pair that with John 20 and reading about Jesus conquering DEATH and rising again!!! Oh my goodness! I love how connected the scriptures are! There is no one like our God!

    1. Ashley says:

Even more amazing, the first foreshadowing is in Genesis 3! In 3:15, God says to the serpent, “…he shall bruise your head and you will bruise his heel.” HE is Jesus and God is laying out for the first time, his plan for redemption of this fallen world. It’s so amazing!

  78. Genna says:

I am so enjoying reading along with all my sisters in Christ. I have done a 365-day plan before, but the community and the insight I am receiving daily are beyond compare! What a blessing this plan and all of you are to me!

  79. Donna Lloyd says:

I can’t help but be reminded that “God Knows” like Joseph said God sent me to prepare the way. when going through bad things we need to remember God has a plan and it will be revealed in his time.

  80. LeighAnn says:

I am thoroughly enjoying reading along with you ladies. I love to read thru your comments and go back and pick up on tidbits I might have missed. No matter how often we read scripture I’m thankful that God is gracious to bring things to my attention I didn’t see the first time. I was struck by several things today one being The Egyptians response to the passing of Jacob and their mourning with Joseph. To think of how the coming Pharaohs heart will be hardened and there will be no respect given to Gods chosen people. I was also struck by Joseph’s response to his brothers “am I in the place of God” oh how I pray that my response to situations would be more like this. And then in John when Jesus said to Mary “do not cling to me” I know He meant for her not to cling to his physical presence – but it struck me as I want to be characterized as one who clings to Jesus. May I become more like the One I long to behold more!!

  81. Bev Brandon says:

My hand is over my mouth at this stunning story of Joseph. Severe betrayal. No family in his life for 13 years. Suffered silently in a dungeon. And he let go. Wrestled well with his God! Comes out saying: “Am I in the place of God?” Gen 50:19. Love superimposing John 20:15 on the story—Who are you looking for? May we find Him in our suffering.

    1. Emilee says:

      This is so good.

    2. So so good. It’s incredible to see the role of forgiveness in Joseph’s life. He was able to look at the bigger picture and see that everything happened for a divine purpose!

  82. Moni says:

…”And the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days.
….When the days of mourning had passed, Joseph said to Pharaoh’s court…Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear to do.”

I love the respect Joseph had for Pharaoh, including asking for permission, and how the Egyptians respected & loved Joseph in return… They even joined Joseph in the funeral procession to another land to bury his father, Jacob. And when Joseph dies, he is buried in Egypt. There is so much to learn from this…respect for a position, respect for those in higher authority, leadership that stands out…and so much more! It seems, I have still so much more to learn…

  83. hesaved83 says:

Great revelations sisters the Holy Spirit is flowing through you, amen!

  84. Shannon Tyson says:

I was really struck at the end of genesis this time by Joseph’s last words to his brothers. Knowing what is to come… Decades of bondage and slavery in Egypt, “God will take care of you.” And “God will bring you to the land He promised,” are such encouraging words. God knew what was in store for His people and He allowed Joseph to encourage and remind them of His promises. I wonder how many times I miss His kindness of encouragement before a trial in my own life.
I’m loving reading with you ladies! Blessings!

    1. Katie K says:

I didn’t notice this in the reading today but you are so right. Not long ago it seemed every devotional and sermon I read or listened to was telling me “do not be afraid”. I knew I was approaching a challenge in my life and thought it was God preparing my heart for that. Turns out there is a completely different and unexpected challenge I’m now facing. As my heart grows discouraged I hope I can remember God speaking to me through those messages. How loving is our God that He speaks to us so! How wonderful that we have a living God who loves us and wants the best for us.

      1. Omo says:

Be encouraged Katie for He will never leave you nor forsake you. Your tests will form important parts of your testimony so do not be discouraged. Going through some tests of my own and I just want to share with you that our God is ever faithful ❤️

  85. Allie says:

Wow. John 20 is so good.

  86. Shirl says:

I am impacted how God consistently goes against the convention of the times. He consistently blessed the younger son when usually it’s the older son who receives everything. When he resurrects, he reveals himself to Mary, a woman who in biblical times had little status. God is gracious and able to do anything, not bound by society and culture. Praise the Lord.

    1. Stephanie says:

      Yes! Amen

    2. Moni says:

Shirl, great statement “not bound by society and culture”…

    3. Amen!

Reading how Mary stumbled upon Jesus thinking he was the Gardener is always so interesting to me. She was probably anxious and upset and didn’t take time to look into his face….but as soon as he said her name, she knew it was Jesus. So incredible. Can you imagine running to him as she did?

  87. Kati says:

I love how Jesus specifically blesses those who believe but haven’t seen…that’s us!!

    1. Cecalee says:

      Amen!

  88. Jennifer says:

15 He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” I’m thinking today about this first encounter with Jesus and Mary Magdalene. I can’t even imagine what that must have felt like to see Jesus again. Just by him saying her name, she knew then it was him…and believed!

  89. Antimony says:

v19-20 “But Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am I in God’s place? As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive”. Not only did Joseph refuse to exact revenge (“Am I in the place of God?”), he treated his brothers kindly. He pointed out God’s overarching plan – his suffering lead to the survival of the Jewish nation. His pain brought them life. Kinda like how in the NT Jesus is shown as giving His life (His pain) for the world (brought them life).

    1. Leah says:

Love love this verse – so often I hear God whispering, “I meant it for good” when things go wrong. I don’t always hear him, or want to hear him, but gentle reminders like this are just what I need after a long week!

      1. Amanda says:

        Beautiful ❤️

  90. Lo says:

I’m still struggling to understand Genesis. I am excited to read everyday and am learning a lot but it’s a hard book for me to fully comprehend. Anyone else having that issue?

    1. Libby says:

I recently told my retired Southern Baptist preacher Grandaddy the same thing, and he said we weren’t meant to understand everything. He said he has lots of questions when he gets to Heaven! I think we have to pray and ask for discernment and get as much as we can! That’s what’s great about this community of students. We can ask questions and learn together as much as we can :)

    2. Donna Lloyd says:

I too struggle with understanding so I make sure to have my Biblestudy commentary on hand. so I read the chapters along with commentary. it really does help to provide insight.

  91. Rebecca says:

Anyone have any insight on genesis verse 23 “If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” It would seem that he’s saying the power of forgiveness lies in our hands, or the holy spirits? But that can’t be true?

    1. Sarina says:

I was wondering about this as well

    2. Libby says:

Okay so I had to study this scripture too…John 20:23. My study Bible and my commentary books I read say that Jesus did not give them the power to forgive sins, but rather the privilege of teaching new believers that their sins have been forgiven IF they have accepted Jesus Christ’s message. The commentary book says “if one believes in Jesus, then a Christian has a right to announce his forgiveness. If a person rejects Jesus’ sacrifice, then a Christian can announce that that person is not forgiven.”
      Hope that helps some!

      1. Katie K says:

Thank you for that explanation! That verse has always confused me

      2. Great explanation!! Thank you!

  92. Susanna says:

I love the end of the passage in John where Thomas is doubting and Jesus tells him blessed are those who have not seen and still believe. Not having seen Jesus there are times I doubt and wonder if I had walked alongside him would I believe more? It’s oddly encouraging that Thomas who walked with him also struggled with doubt. I also love the end where Jesus says “but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.” I want to shout Amen, Amen! over and over again loudly!

    1. Katie Hentges says:

That is something to comfort in!! Jesus told the disciples many of things in person it then they took place and you see them lost in confusion! I want to say there is a verse somewhere that says that we have something more sure, being the word of God, in regards to seeing in person and reading it from the word of God. It’s 2 Peter 1:19 I believe! Kind of crazy to think about as we often feel that we are at the disadvantage when God has given us the full picture in one book.

  93. Kara says:

I have so loved reading this as well! Can’t stop thinking about the life of Joseph and his forgiveness & kindnesses to his brothers. He saw and trusted the great hand of God in his life not the hands of men. Oh to have this kind of faith!

    1. Annie says:

Yes, I’m inspired by Joseph to live a more forgiving life!!

I agree!! I am always so moved by the story of Joseph’s life! What an amazing example of forgiveness and trust in the Lord that he will turn our bad in to good. This encourages me today!

Agree with comments about Genesis! I’m looking forward to the next ‘instalment’. I feel gripped reading it like this in a way I haven’t before. It’s also tying it all together for me and making much more sense. I feel a bit foolish, but realised only this morning why ‘tribes of Israel’ are called that, ie sons of Jacob (aka Israel). Ping! penny dropped. Love this sense of learning in community, as I sit here with my morning cup of tea in England, knowing that all you women in other parts of the globe are reading along too throughout the day, well, it gives me a lovely sense of connected peace. Enjoy your reading and your day :)

I’ve never read the Old Testament except for bits and pieces, so I’m feeling the same!!
Here from the United States, with my cup of coffee. Amazing how unity in Christ spans the globe. Hallelujah.

In regard to the study; general comment for all- does anyone know if the whole twelve tribes of Israel are considered “existing” still today? I see a lot of these OT movements on social media that claim the twelve tribes are still living and active, and also that a believer should adhere to the Moseaic (sp) Law still based on the Scripture of Jesus didn’t come to abolish the law, but fulfill it. I obviously see a new covenant, as His blood was the sacrifice for all, forever. Just interested on other takes on this perspective, or if anyone had any insight.

In regards to John- wow!!! How wonderful is it that Jesus’ words were “peace be with you?” often times I don’t feel much a peace (I’m a SAHM to two little ones 3 and under) and I often forget that He is the Prince of Peace. In Him I have such a great rest for my soul. Oh, how amazing! I tried putting myself in the position of Mary Magdalen and I truly think I would have lost my marbles , knowing my nature, I don’t believe I would have been so calm (ish) when seeing Lord Jesus. In fact, I might have screamed. But oh, how overwhelming must that have been to hear Him say, “Mary.” And then she just knew…

      Oh, precious Jesus, thank You!!

Very cool, ladies! I’m sipping a strong cup of coffee over my scripture in Virginia Beach, Virginia! :)

I’ve dabbled in all of these scriptures before but this is the first time really hearing and knowing them. I’m having so much fun with you all!

The words that stood out to me the most, this morning are from John 20:27 “Stop doubting and believe.”

I understand the context that He was saying it Thomas but He used it to build my faith of Him in me. I’ve really been struggling with self-doubt, even in how I can be of any good to God, and with this, he assured me very simply that it is not I who will have the strength or courage to walk the walk. I need to stop self-doubting and believe in He who is in me to live through me.

        1. Elizabeth I’m sipping coffee in Portsmouth,VA ! “Stop doubting and believe” is so important to me lately because I can sometimes feel the doubt creeping in and I need to remember not to be a “Doubting Thomas” and trust in the lord and his plans for me!

        Ann Marie – I answered someone else mistakenly about the tribes – here is my understanding;
the tribes are not still all accounted for. When Solomon’s son became king the kingdom of Israel split in (north and south) and I believe it was at the time of the Babylonian exile that the other kingdom dispersed and was no longer accounted for. Just the (I think southern) kingdom remained – the one Christ came from.
Then in 70 AD the temple was destroyed, and it kept record of all the genealogies and such, so that was all destroyed.

        1. Anne-Marie says:

          Thanks Jessica!
