this is probably my all time favorite passage in the Bible. King Jehoshaphat’s honesty and vulnerability before his kingdom is so beautiful. I love that he brought EVERYONE before the Lord to pray – men, women, and children. I hope to be this open with my own husband and children when faced with battles – battles that belong to the LORD! my heart is always stirred up when reading this story! if Jehoshaphat wasn’t such a weird name I’d probably name a baby after him ;)
also! did anyone catch who the guy was who told the nation that the battle belonged to the Lord?!? it was Benaiah’s grandson! Benaiah was one of King David’s right hand men who fought tons of battles with him! talk about a lineage that was blessed by the Lord!
24 “Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.”
Read some commentaries on this passage because it caught my attention. Salvation isn’t as easy as we are often led to believe. Jesus tells us right here and elsewhere it’s a struggle to enter. We must die to ourselves, take up our cross daily and follow him.
I felt like this was referring to staying firm to the end. Because He said they knew him in the streets and enjoyed good things with him, but did not enter through the door to the glorious end. And it reminded me of Jehoshaphat and Asa and how they set their hearts of God for a good part of their reigns but towards the end got derailed. May we stay steadfast and rest on Him through the afflictions to enter into His Kingdom.
The story of Jehoshaphat has a special place in my heart because Jesus appeared in my dream once, and uttered the name Jehoshaphat during a very low season of my husband and I’s lives. “You don’t even need to fight, stand still and see the Lord’s victory..” and indeed, we saw how the Lord fought for us and gave us victory…
This morning, before I read chapter 20 again, I asked God to reveal something new to me through Jehoshaphat’s life.. and this is what struck me: The two instances when Jehoshaphat made alliances w/ the Israel’s wicked Kings were seasons when everything was going well with him… God reminded me that now that my husband and i are in a season when things are tarting to go well, we shoul be careful not to compromise in order to gain more influence or more wealth… we must remain grateful and content with God’s blessings and not grab things that aren’t for us yet…
15 He said: “Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the Lord says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s. ” Amen! The battle is God’s battle! What a comfort!
I loved these chapters of Israel (Judah)’s faithfulness and how earnestly they sought the Lord! Thanks, God, for this little gem in the sometimes hard-to-connect-to book of chronicles! =)
