Because at the point… God turned his face against Jesus because he saw all of our sins.. sin is detestable to God.. so therefore he was taking the punishment of our sin. God turns away from sin.
Jesus is dying alone… he I am sure didn’t want this..
God did forsake Jesus on the cross because he, in that moment, assumed all of our sins and bore our guilt AND our punishment. However, Jesus is also fully God and went to the cross willingly. So, there is some level of mystery here. Because in his humanity, he was abandoned by the Father, but in his divinity he was never separated from the Father.
Reading of our Lord’s crucifixion I find the incredible patience and humility of Christ. The insults and blasphemies called against him are recorded in detail perhaps because they are so unjust. Yet our Lord continued on in the will of His father for the joy set before him of glory in the bride He would receive.
Seeing the repeated reminders & pleas over the last few days (“Be strong & courageous”, “I believe, help my unbelief!”,”The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak “) is so comforting in its own way. The struggles I feel are not unique, but have been faced & overcome by humans before. I can overcome because of my mighty God. ❤️
9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
I’m encouraged by God’s use of Rahab, a prostitute, in these verses. Such a great reminder of how we are all sinners, but that God uses us for His glory and loves us all the same!
I love thinking about how wide the dry path through the river must have been. The people were commanded to stay a certain distance away from the Ark, but the Levites were standing with the ark right in the middle of the river! How much space there must have been for the people to go around it and keep the proper distance!
Josh 2:11 “When we heard it, our hearts melted and no courage remained in any man any longer because of you; for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath”. The nations saw the acts of God and they were afraid. They realized that only God could do these things.
I love the part where Rahab says that the people of her land have been hearing about the Israelites ever since they crossed the Red Sea! That’s been 40 years of awe that has been building up. So amazing.
Me too… Reminds me again about the importance of waiting on God, and again how he goes before us even though we may not think so or see it from our existing position.
It’s not just us who’s heart and character needs to be prepared 2 Peter 3:9 reminds us “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” Interwoven into a greater story.
“Patience isn’t about how long we can wait, but how we behave while waiting.” (Danny Silk)
9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Comforting words through life’s challenges. I am not afraid; with God, I am strong and courageous!
And then the people echo this when Joshua commands them — “we will do everything you say, only be strong and courageous!” Our Great God gives us the encouragement we need on earth in the form of His people. How refreshing!
April, Peter’s vision about all foods being declared clean is in Acts 10:9-16. You are correct Jesus did save us from the food laws along with many of the other laws the Jews used to have to practice. My study notes for Acts 10:15 say “Jesus had already laid the ground work for setting aside the laws of clean and unclean food (Matthew 15:11; see also 1 Timothy 4:3-5).
I am convinced, being fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean in itself. But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for that person it is unclean. (Romans 14:14 NIV) the entire chapter of Romans will be a good one for them
Hi April, I’m sorry to hear of your health issues & I pray that God continues to see you through it! I’m sorry you are in such a difficult situation with that person. That being said, I just wanted to add that the story that you are thinking of with Peter is actually not about Jesus freeing us to eat any foods. If you read that chapter again, it is actually God’s way of showing that no person (Jew or Gentile) is impure or unclean. See Acts 10:28 for reference. I hope this helps & I pray for God’s healing with your health.
Hi friends, I have an off-topic question that I am needing help with. (I guess it relates to what we were reading a few days ago).
In the OT God declared certain foods to be unclean in order to protect the Israelites. But I know that somewhere in the NT He gave a dream to someone (Peter?) where He lowered a bunch of the unclean food down and told him to “rise, kill and eat”. Do you girls know where this story is? It’s how we know that Jesus has freed us from that part of the law, isn’t it?
I have serious health problems that God is seeing me through, and yesterday someone was arguing that I am sick because I don’t follow that part of the law. Even though in truth I don’t eat the unclean foods just because I’m too sick to eat them, but that’s not the point. The point is that we are no longer bound to that law. Even if I were eating them, I don’t think it wouldn’t be reason for me being sick. But this person thinks that my belief in that is the reason I’m sick and they even said it would kill me. I know the story refuting that lie is somewhere in the NT! Can anyone help me find it?
Hey April! I’m no bible scholar, but I think God had many intentions for those food laws before Jesus. Possibly for practical (like hey if you don’t cook it right you could get sick, or this meat doesn’t keep well) and spiritual reasons. But you ARE RIGHT that Jesus challenges the heart and purpose behind those food laws. In Matthew 15:1-20 should help you and possibly enlighten that person who is telling you those things. “It’s not what goes into your mouth that defiles you; you are defiled by the words that come out of your mouth” Matt 15:10
I’ll pray for your health problems!
Rahul’s story is a great start to studying godly ethics! I think in her case is would have been a huge evil to expose gods servants, the Israelite spies, to those wicked men. God commends her FAITH in Hebrews 11:31 and James 2:25. Corrie ten boom felt compelled to tell the truth about hiding the Jews when the nazis came to her door and she can also be commended for her faith that God would protect them.
ah! So much good stuff in Joshua 1-3
— (1:5-6) His presence makes us BRAVE.
— (1:7) He knows best.
— (1:9) there’s no room for fear or doubt.
— (3:5) When God is about to move, there’s no excuse for sin. It’s time to set yourself apart!
— (3:17) God won’t just bring you halfway!
Be encouraged today, ladies! God is so good. He is moving all around you and NOW is the time to run after him with bravery and faith.
It is great how God used Rahab, she was a prostitute and was not from God’s choosen people! This reminds me that it doesn’t matter who you are, God can use you and have mercy on you! She only heard about the miracles that God made with the isrelites and confessed that God of Israel is God in Hevens and Earth!!!
Rahab’s lie is similar to the lie told by the Egyptian midwives (to bless and keep God’s people from harm- love her confession of faith that the God of Israel is the true God of heaven and earth), and the scarlet cord on the door is similar to the blood over the doors for Passover, the parting of the Jordan similar to the Red Sea- love how God repeats themes and reminders for His people to strengthen faith and remind (both then and us now!)
Interesting that they parted water again with the arc of the covenant. What a miracle! Their faith must have been strengthened to see how faithful God was with them
8 Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
A reminder to stay in the Word daily and a promise of Our Father walking with me. Thank you She Reads Truth for helping me stay in the Word.
34 And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).
Christ took in all of our pain, hurt, and sin when he died on the cross in our place. How amazing is it that we have a Lord who loves us so much to be torn from his own son!
Thank you Jesus for your sacrifice! I love you!
❤️
Be strong and courageous

✅
The pain Jesus suffered on the cross does not compare to the wrath He bore for all our sins
❤️
Not once, nor twice, but three times the Lord calls us to be strong and courageous ❤️
There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for a friend ❤️ we are conquerors and co-heirs with Christ.
Why did Jesus ask His Father why he had abandoned him? I don’t understand

I think Acts 10 is the passage you are looking for!

Thanks for pointing out that Hebrews and James passages that commend Rahab’s faith! I didn’t realize she was referenced in the NT.

I have always struggled with Rahab’s lie. Clearly God blessed her. Any thoughts?

I’ve never thought about how her hiding the men was a lie, but you’re right. It was!
