23Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.

  10. Susan Dexter says:

Many questions reading the passages in Deuteronomy today. I think the most I have had throughout this book so far.

Faith Can literally move mountains and prayer is so powerful. I pray this week that I would feel God’s presence with me as I go to classes, meet with small group girls, and spend time with my roommate. I pray that the Lord would work in my heart so I see every event I have this week as an opportunity not as something that just needs to get done. Amen

  15. Charis Schneeberger says:

Purge out the evil from among you.
Is there a difference between holiness and cleanliness? It seems like they are sometimes used interchangeably.

He didn’t tell them by what authority because he knew they were choosing not to believe.

  16. May Alcorn says:

Yes!! So powerful for me too with Easter approaching! The true gravity of the punishment! Also love that Jesus rides a colt never ridden before!

  17. Sharon Ide says:

God displays his great wisdom in the giving of the intricate law to the Israelites, particular to what they needed in this time and because of their sinful tendencies.

  18. E Hong says:

24Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. -ellie

  19. JoAnn Foley-DeFiore says:

17And he was teaching them and saying to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a den of robbers.”

  20. Sara Richter says:

Day 1–. Nice for this year it lined up a little with Easter. I thought: wow-the OT readings show practices of Israel but at first there is still the reminder that it starts with loving God. Then in Mark, it is the beginnings of Easter and how asking God thru prayer and faith is powerful. So interestingly positioned against each other.

A good reminder to me today.

  22. Lauren says:

I love how snarky Jesus is in answering the Pharisees. He’s so not afraid to challenge their ways of thinking.

  25. Addison says:

24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours—I need to believe that the Lord will provide instead of continuously praying empty prayers

  26. VA says:

A fruit tree is intended to bear fruit as is a believer for the good of the Kingdom.

  27. Courtney says:

God is so powerful! We only need faith the size of a mustard seed

    1. Franchesca says:

Amen! Courtney that is all you need

  28. Jenna says:

Deut 20:3 ‘He shall say to them, ‘Hear, O Israel, you are approaching the battle against your enemies today. Do not be fainthearted. Do not be afraid, or panic, or tremble before them, 4 for the Lord your God is the one who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.’

When I’m going through a hard time or things don’t seem to work out the way I want them to, it’s easy for me to look & see what I can control/fix rather than to turn to prayer & ask God for guidance. I need to trust His plan for me & need to remember that He is always there & won’t abandon me, just like He always provided for the Israelites & fought for them. I’m in a transitionary period of life right now & I’ve been anxious & a little fearful of what the future holds, but reading these verses is a wonderful reminder that I don’t need to be worried bc God is the one who goes before me & will fight for me.

    1. Jenna says:

Oops meant to say God goes with me!

    2. KK says:

Jenna, thanks for sharing! I’m in a transition time too and these verses demonstrate God’s faithfulness to us. By His power alone will I be able to continue on this journey.

  29. Skyler says:

I was confused on how Deuteronomy 19:21 it says that it is eye for eye, tooth for tooth, etc. but later in the Bible its says that we should not return evil for evil

    1. Amy m. says:

This is Old Testament, before Christ became our actual sacrifice. These are the laws we would have been held to before He saved us.

  30. In Deuteronomy 20:5-9, is God saying that the soldiers that haven’t been able to enjoy their new house/vineyard/marriage should physically return to those places and not participate in battle? Because adding that the faint hearted should also go rather than fight and possibly die makes me think that…

The only other way I can see it being understood is as God saying they will win the battle and be able to return safely to their homes. I would love to hear your insight!

    1. Antimony says:

I think He didn’t want anyone who was distracted by other things. Wholehearted, singleminded commitment from people who wanted to be part of it

  31. Savannah says:

Ladies I am asking for prayers today. God has laid it on my heart to share the gospel with someone at my orchestra retreat this weekend. I don’t know who it will be, but I feel that there will be a kid there that will really need to hear it, and I need to be there to say it. Praying that the Holy Spirit will guide me through this!

    1. Lyndsay says:

      Amen!

    2. Angelyn says:

Savannah, I love your heart for other musicians. Keep fighting the fight :)

  32. Niki says:

I’m still here ladies… Playing catchup on the readings. It’s amazing how you think you only miss a few days and boom, you are 10-11 days behind. :( gotta catch up and return it to my daily schedule.

  33. Melissa says:

I read Mark 11:25 over and over and I am still caught… I am struggling with finding the difference between forgiving someone’s wrong doings, but also fear of putting myself in a position to allow the same troubling things to happen again in a challenging family relationship. Thoughts on this?

    1. Melissa says:

Except that I need to remember… The Lord gives me a second chance every time I ask…

      1. Yana says:

25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.

In your prayer ask for help in forgiving them while you protect yourself. If it is unsafe to forgive them in person then forgive them in prayer. Forgiveness is as much a self cleansing and healing as it is a public confession. Sometimes, It is more important that we forgive what someone has done to us and include the welfare of that person in our prayers than it is practical to physically approach that person and tell them you forgive them. I know family members that would be shocked to know how much their words and actions have hurt me. If I were to make this apparent to them it would cause hurt, not heal it. So I pray for my ability to forgive them their unkindness and I pray for strength and guidance when I have to be around them. Our Father does not want you to put yourself in harms way, but He does want you to forgive in prayer so you can heal and become stronger in Him. I hope this makes sense.

    2. Traci says:

Melissa, I believe that you can forgive but don’t have to forget or allow them to continue to hurt you. Boundaries are the key. God bless

  34. Antimony says:

Mk 11:25 “Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father who is in heaven will also forgive you your transgressions”. If I can’t forgive someone who has sinned against me, how can I expect God to forgive me?

  35. ClarissaForrest says:

19“When you lay siege to a city for a long time, fighting against it in order to capture it, you must not destroy its trees by putting an ax to them, because you can get food from them. You must not cut them down. Are trees of the field human, to come under siege by you? 20But you may destroy the trees that you know do not produce food. You may cut them down to build siege works against the city that is waging war against you, until it falls.
12The next day when they came out from Bethany, He was hungry. 13After seeing in the distance a fig tree with leaves, He went to find out if there was anything on it. When He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. 14He said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again! ” And His disciples heard it.
I appreciate the correlation between these two passages.
Does anyone have insight into this? I’m planning on looking what other translations say and check Strongs concordance.

    1. Heidi L says:

Not sure if a correlation between these 2 passages about trees exists or is supposed to be evident. Maybe they just fell on the same day. But… If you find something out, please post! :)

  36. Meghan says:

    Lord, help me understand.

    1. Kelly says:

The Old Testament is a beautiful story of how we as humans can not navigate this world without Christ. I see two things. The Jews need the Old Testament because it points to Jesus as the messiah. We need the Old Testament to hear about the people’s struggle of living under the law and how it is impossible given our human nature. Christ had to come for us to be free

  37. Meghan says:

I struggle with Deuteronomy sometimes. It’s very different from the New Testament.

    1. Ali says:

You aren’t alone! I have struggled through most of the OT so far but I’m hanging in there!

  38. Chaunrose says:

24 ‘Therefore I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted you.- What a promise! Lord help my unbelief!

  39. 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. – Prayer requires belief . James 1 speaks to this as well…those who ask, but don’t believe are double minded and unstable. Let’s be women of Faith who don’t doubt, but believe all that Jesus has for us if we pray with all our hearts!!

    1. karen says:

      Amen!

    2. Tatiana says:

      Thank you

  40. Suzanne says:

24Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
We have to be very careful here with these verses. John 14:10-15 makes it clear that Jesus did not preach a health and wealth gospel. If we truly believe in Christ, we will be praying for the things He puts on our hearts, not just for selfish gain for ourselves. I pray that I would desire the things of God, and not just the things of the flesh.

    1. Meghan says:

      so very true.

    2. Hesaved83 says:

      Amen, Suzanne!

      1. Jessee says:

Agreed, it’s easy to read this as ‘if I pray for it I will get it’ whereas if we are true believers who trust our God we will be praying for his will, his way, and we will certainly receive it. It may not be what we ‘want’ but in our belief we will know it is Gods will.

    3. Savannah says:

Agreed! My youth pastor just preached two weeks on prayer, and this is one thing he mentioned

  41. Kelly says:

23 you must not leave the body hanging on the pole overnight. Be sure to bury it that same day, because anyone who is hung on a pole is under God’s curse.

Wow this just reminds me of Jesus’ crucifixion. He was hung on the cross, took all my sins so I can inherit all His blessings

    1. Hesaved83 says:

Kelly, Holy Spirit impressed the same thoughts to me as well.

    2. Tolu says:

Wow! I hadn’t thought about that!
