Acts 13:27–31

Scripture is God breathed and true. When we memorize it, we carry the good news of Jesus with us wherever we go.

As we look at the New Testament together, we’ll commit Acts 13:27–31 to memory. In the second half of this sermon

from Acts 13, Paul spoke about the role Israel played in Christ’s death, fulfilling Old Testament prophecies about a coming Savior. This passage reminds us that, as believers, we serve the risen Lord while bearing witness to the hope of the gospel.

This week, let’s begin our memorization with just the first verse of this passage. To help you visualize what’s being described in the text, write down the verse, then underline the subject of verse 27, circle who or what they didn’t recognize, and draw a square around what happened as a result.

27 Since the residents of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize him or the sayings of the prophets that are read every Sabbath, they have fulfilled their words by condemning him. 28 Though they found no grounds for the death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him killed. 29 When they had carried out all that had been written about him, they took him down from the tree and put him in a tomb. 30 But God raised him from the dead, 31 and he appeared for many days to those who came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are now his witnesses to the people.
—Acts 13:27–31

Shes, I want to ask for prayer. I’ve been struggling a lot this past week emotionally. It’s been so difficult over the past few years of the Lord calling me back to live with my parents. I’m turning 34 in November and my heart is hurting so much from the relational loss I’ve experienced over the last few years- friend after friend don’t turn out to be who I think they’ll be and I end up feeling heartbroken. I’ve been waiting on the Lord in terms of finances, lasting and real local community, and of course, marriage. Appreciate any prayer. I’ve tried to be so thankful for my blessings, but I can’t seem to get out of my funk this week. It seems I’m still grieving the loss of my former community …. and lack of support in ways I thought some of them would show up. Praying joy comes in the morning…

WE too, are a witness to the people for what God has done in our life!

It was a hard night and morning for me mourning the loss of my sweet, crazy Sav gone. I have been in a silent treatment war with the hubs, and just sad. I didn’t want to go to church this morning. I have 3 chances to get there! The first one was a hard no although I watched all of it online. As I started praising in the 2nd I kept wanting to go, but not. Finally, I decided to throw on something easy and go.
The pastor that was speaking today is my good friend, and the one who I called to pray on the phone with me right after the call with my sister. I really wanted to hug her.
Some of the youth were sharing their testimonies from this week’s camp. Her daughter got up there and nervously began. She talked about how she was not happy and would hurt herself. She then went on to say that last year at camp she broke free and Jesus spoke to her. But some still remained, and this year she felt more chains broken.
It was hard to hear…b/c I’m always gonna have that question of why didn’t God move in Sav’s life. I kept telling her she should come here and go to church with me that we have an amazing young adults program. Well, I wanted to go and do Altar Call because it’s always uplifting to pray for others as we go through our own trials. Out of all the people in the church, you guessed it…one young, shy, pretty lady came up to me. She said she too, had fought with depression, medications, and had just had a hospital stay feeling so confused and worthless.

You can believe I just started crying. I could barely speak..but God wanted me to tell her I cared..and more importantly he cares. He has a plan and purpose for her and he created her perfectly. To look to him before all else. We were crying and hugging each other and I got her number to reach out occasionally.

I hugged my pastor and told her although a hard, tough 2 weeks, it was good to see God through it all. But I was still questioning why didn’t God have a fierce breakthrough in Sav. She assured me we don’t know..that when I had tried all those time…God’s word doesn’t return void. With all of this..I felt a peace with it all, and I texted my sister to say so. I told her to look for a dragonfly today. It wasn’t even 20 minutes later- the single text—I saw a dragonfly.

Another sidenote…on the drive home a young 20 something drove to come beside me and yelled I just want to tell you how pretty you are! Am I excited that someone told me I was pretty….yes, when it is exactly something my niece would lean over to tell me when I comment on my “oldness!” She would always say..you are SO PRETTY!!

Your spiritual tenacity is impressive. It is so good you showed up and prayed despite the emotional struggle you are facing. God is with you and your sister. May He continue to help your family gain perspective as your days continue. May you all have peace and wisdom in this challenging time. Keep fighting. ❤️

    3. Wendy B says:

This time of grieving will be so difficult, Rhonda. Identifying with and supporting others can be helpful but also give yourself grace❤️

  18. Mary says:

‘Because the residents of Jerusalem and their leaders did not recognise him or understand the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath, they fulfilled those words by condemning him’.
Missing the point on who Jesus is means missing the point on absolutely everything. It makes sense that they neither understood the words of the prophets nor recognised Jesus because John tells us that Jesus is the Word!
While I can rejoice that I know Jesus, this verse also terrifies me because I know so many people today (after the resurrection) who don’t understand the Word, and so don’t understand who Jesus is. A person I care about deeply looked at me recently and said (about the Bible) ‘you know these are just words to me’. But, strangely, he still found himself drawn to a verse from Romans(!), so I almost want to use this verse today to pray that he would understand the words as they meant to be understood, and ultimately recognise Jesus as his saviour. Oh Lord, all you ask of me is to be your witness – Father, please help me to be your witness. Remove anything in me that gets in the way of Jesus. Renew my mind so that it is fixed on my Hope! Amen

Ditto Kelly re: that statement you made! ❤

    3. Searching says:

Perfect nutshell statement, Mary. Praying with you for your friend and for friends of mine also who ‘miss the point on who Jesus is’ – one commented that ‘I’ve looked at all that and decided I didn’t need it’. Oh, the heartbreak of that statement.

    4. Traci Gendron says:

Missing the point on who Jesus is means missing the point on absolutely everything.

My husbands daughter told me that I could keep my God. I was so taken back with shock.
