2 Samuel 7:1-17, Psalm 84:10, Revelation 22:16

Scripture Reading: 2 Samuel 7:1-17, Psalm 84:10, Revelation 22:16

This Is the Old Testament is part of a twelve-week thematic overview of the entire Bible. Each day we’ll read a thematic selection from a different book of the Bible, along with supplemental passages that show how the theme of that day’s main reading is found throughout Scripture. We’ll also read a brief summary of each book and a reflection on how the book fits into the larger story of Scripture. This week, we move from the Pentateuch into the second section of the Old Testament, the Historical Books.

The Book of 2 Samuel: The book of 2 Samuel is a history of David’s reign as king of Israel and his relationship with God. Though flawed and sinful, he was still described as a man after God’s own heart.

How 2 Samuel Fits Into the Story: As God established a king in Israel, He also established a new covenant with him—one that would find its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ. Though 2 Samuel displays plenty of examples of leadership failures in Israel, God displayed His mercy and grace through His promise to use this broken nation to bring the Savior into the world.

Reflection Questions:
1. How is God’s promise to David in 2 Samuel 7 fulfilled in Christ?
2. How does today’s reading shape your understanding of the story of redemption?

Take time to reflect on your responses and share what you are learning with others in the community in the comments.

2 Samuel 7 shows how God can still show His grace and mercy to us in the broken down bad times.

    Reflection Questions:
    1. How is God’s promise to David in 2 Samuel 7 fulfilled in Christ? That the Son of God would come from David’s lineage. That Jesus would build a house for God’s name, and that God would establish a throne for Jesus’ kingdom forever.
    2. How does today’s reading shape your understanding of the story of redemption?
That God has a plan. We think we know what to do but God knows best and He knows at what time He will make plans known.

Does anyone feel that this a bit too fast paced of a dance through scripture? I’m finding it hard to connect with this study like some others have mentioned. And I usually LOVE the Old Testament…

    1. Margaret W. says:

Yes, it is fast; but it is intended to give us a sweeping overview of Jewish history, which as Christians, is our family story, too. If it’s new to you, it can be overwhelming; but wherever you are in your faith journey, it is a great gift. When it is overwhelming, try to find meaning in just the focal passage if you can. Scripture is living and active and offers us new gifts each time we approach God in this way. I’m praying that this helps you and all of us SHEs find meaning in the journey. ❤️

Praise report! Harper is on her way home from the hospital! She was able to walk around last night and her pain has decreased significantly over the past two days. She has 11 prescriptions (that she hates all of because they are “yucky”) but she gets to continue her healing journey from the comfort of her own home. Your continued prayers are appreciated, and I am so grateful to each and everyone of you who has been praying for Harper. God is good!

    1. Cee Gee says:

This makes my heart so glad! Thank You, Father, for hearung our prayers and may Harper’s recivery remain uneventful with less pain every day. ❤ Thank you for this wonderful news, KIRA! ❤❤❤

    Reflection Questions:
    1. How is God’s promise to David in 2 Samuel 7 fulfilled in Christ? I was puzzled at this question and the vast scope of answer, but thankful for your answers in the comment. I am very fascinated with the lineage of David (the king after God’s own heart, despite his struggles). In Matthew 1:1-17, the lineage was mentioned, something profound came up today for me I’d like to expand on. Abraham to David: 14 generations, David to Babylonian exile: 14 generations, Babylonian exile to Jesus: 14 generations. There are three groups of 14.
    .
In Hebrew, vowels aren’t written out, so David is spelled D-V-D, and by assigning numerical values to Hebrew letters, David is 4+6+4 =14.
    .
In the Bible, number 7 is the symbol of completion, wholeness, perfection (God rests on the 7th day Sabbath, 7 churches, 7 seals, 7 trumpets, 7 spirits of God, 70 times 7 forgiveness= full forgiveness). 14 is 7 times 2, it represents a double measure of perfection and completion (it is finished). And Matthew uses the ultimate number 3 (three groups) with the double perfection 14 here. God’s timing for when Jesus was born is God’s perfection. The Passover lamb was sacrificed on the 14th day of the first Hebrew month. The blood of the lamb was smeared on the doorposts on the evening of the 14th day (just hours before the Angel of Death passed through Egypt to strike the firstborns, but spared the homes with the blood on the doorposts, we now have the blood of Christ on us when we receive Him as LORD and Savior through prayers, sparing us from eternal death). On the 15th day, the Israelites left Egypt in haste, in absolute haste (represents instant freedom). So right after the 14th came to a close, freedom comes immediately. It was so fast that they rushed out of the land of slavery. “Yes indeed, it won’t be long now.” God’s Decree. “Things are going to happen so fast your head will swim, one thing fast on the heels of the other. You won’t be able to keep up. Everything will be happening at once…” (Amos 9:13 MSG). So that’s Number 14. Oh my goodness, I have goose bumps writing this. Praise the LORD for His wisdom.
    .
    2. How does today’s reading shape your understanding of the story of redemption?
    .
Redemption takes the appointed time. In the biblical worldview, time is split into two concepts: Kairos (appointed kingdom time or season) vs. Chronos (the calendar time, the clock). To “redeem” means to buy back or reclaim something from bad circumstances for a good purpose. “He has made everything beautiful in its time (kairos)…” (Ecclesiastes 3:11). In this sense, redemption takes the appointed time because true transformation can only happen when a person aligns their actions with the designated season of opportunity, rather than trying to force it on their own timeline. God’s timing is something we human wrestles with, because we can’t measure divine time with our watch. Delay in human time is usually a period of necessary preparation. The idea is that the door doesn’t open until we have the maturity or strength to walk through it. Psalm 90:4 says, “A thousand years in Your sight are like a day that has just gone by”. Ecclesiastes 3:1: “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens”. Divine timing operates by seasons (Kairos), just like nature, we cannot force summer fruits to grow in the dead of winter, no matter how hard we work or how anxious we feel. “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven…” Ecclesiastes 3:1-2. Therefore, anxious tolling does not change the clock. “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the Proper Time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9). And Jesus in His mercy to our anxiousness gives us the signs of the divine season (Kronos) in Luke 21,
    .
“…for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict. You will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and some of you they will put to death. You will be hated by all for my name’s sake… And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world…. Now, when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your Redemption draws Near”. Stand up, lift our heads, rather than cowering in fear or bowing down in despair when crises happen, stand up and look up to Heaven, for our redemption is near. He is coming back. He is coming back like a thief (suddenness, unpreparedness, unexpected timing, not that He is doing something illegal). “Blessed is the one who watching, and keeping his garments, so that he may not walk naked and they may see his shame” Revelation 16:15.
    .
    Be blessed dear sisters.

  12. Ada M says:

The past & future verb tense really stood out to me in today’s passage, highlighting that God has been there since the beginning, and has great plans for our future. As in verse 9: “I have been with you wherever you have gone. […] I will make a great name for you…” and the rest of the verses with such redemptive promises for us. Everything is HE WILL! A statement of certainty, of promise! It really highlighted to me His faithfulness, how great is our God! May the truth of His steadfast promise truly resonate deep in my heart. Hallelujah!

    1. Tami says:

I love that you picked up on the past/future. It is so true!

    2. Rhonda J. says:

That’s what stood out to me too! Especially that David had such a long, tumultuous road just to this part of his story!

Thank you for praying about my appt. I do finally have one, but not until July 2. We trust in God’s timing and know He is Sovereign over this but considering my history, symptoms and how I’m feeling the delay is frustrating and discouraging. However, I am currently first on the cancellation list with the possibility of an opening for June 11. Please pray this will be available to me. Thank you so much.

    5. Cee Gee says:

So sorry, Wendy, for the long wait. I recently had to wait 7 weeks while enduring severe pain and other unpleasantness and not knowing if there was something critical going on. I know that’s not the same as what you’re experiencing, but just wanted yoy to know I empathize with yoy and pray for cancellation to open the door sooner! ❤

      1. Wendy B says:

Thank you Cee Gee. Oh….waiting 7 weeks while in pain is awful. Sorry you had to endure that. I am so grateful I do not have pain.

NOTES from WARREN WIERSBE (NKJV Study Bible:
    [Catalyst: A Messianic Moment

    2 Sam. 7:12

God’s first announcement of the coming of the Savior was given in Genesis 3:15, informing us that the Savior would be a human being and not an angel. Genesis 12:3 explains that He would be an Israelite who would bless the whole world, and Genesis 49:10
    Genesis 49:10 NLT
The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from his descendants, until the…
says that He would come through the tribe of Judah. In the covenant here in 2 Samuel 7, God announced to David that Messiah would come through his family, and Micah 5:2 prophesied that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem, the City of David (see Matt. 2:6). No wonder the king was so elated when he learned that Messiah would be known as “the Son of David” (see Matt. 1:1)!

In 2 Samuel 7:11–16, the Lord speaks about Solomon as well as about the Savior, who is “greater than Solomon” (Matt. 12:42). Solomon would build the temple David longed to build, but his reign would end; however, the reign of Messiah would go on forever. David would have a house forever (2 Sam. 7:25, 29), a kingdom forever (7:16), and a throne forever (7:13, 16), and he would glorify God’s name forever (7:26).

All of this is fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the Son of David (Ps. 89:34–37; Luke 1:32, 33, 69; Acts 2:29–36; 13:22, 23; 2 Tim. 2:8) and will be manifested when He returns, establishes the promised kingdom, and sits on David’s throne.]

    Love, hugs, and prayers! ❤

  16. Michelle P says:

I’m actually going thru 2 Samuel right now in personal studies. :) it’s really encouraging to read it alongside the psalms and see David’s heart for the Lord through all his trials.
Thanks again for your prayers ladies! Things have been feeling a bit better in my transition… I’m making an effort to connect with new people and be open to sharing the new path the Lord has for me. It isn’t easy but I do see God moving. I’m sure in time things will feel lighter and easier.
    God bless you all !

    1. Cee Gee says:

Such an encouraging update, Michelle; I am so happy to hear this and pray God makes a clear path for you in forming meaningful, long-term friendships with other believers. Thanks for the good news! ❤

So glad you’re doing it too on another study. God is good. Praying for your joy everyday and beautiful community around you.

  17. Melissa Vandiver says:

We often want to do things with the right motive (for David it was to build the temple), but God may have a different plan for us. It’s important to listen to the Lord and wise counsel.

    1. Rhonda J. says:

      Yes, that’s a good point!

  18. Susan Burley says:

David is one of my favorite people of the Bible. His Psalms and story just seem to encompass the entire spectrum of human emotion. His story is a reminder that God can truly use each of us with our own unique stories. What a testament of His power & glory that He can use anyone to carry out His perfect plans. May I continue pursuing you, O Lord even when it’s difficult.

  19. Kathy says:

This brought to mind 1 Peter 1:20. “He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.”
I have this note in my Bible:
“It’s difficult to grasp the reality of ‘before the foundation of the world’ but there was indeed a time before the Earth existed. And it’s even wilder to realize that before ‘In the beginning God created…’ ever happened, ‘Surely I am coming soon’, had already been set in motion.
‘In the beginning was the Word.’ The Word was Jesus – He was God and He was with God in the beginning. Jesus was never Plan B. He was always Plan A. He is the piece that makes all the other pieces fit together.”
God has always had a plan. I find such comfort in that truth. I pray that y’all will have a blessed weekend!

  20. Kelly (NEO) says:

    1. How is God’s promise to David in 2 Samuel 7 fulfilled in Christ?
    .
Not to go too far off, but what came to my mind was that when the Son came in the flesh, He was in a temporary “tent” (think John 1:14) that traveled around Israel. When we join Him in eternity He is the temple (Rev. 21:22).
So while Jesus is the fulfillment of the eternal King, He is also the Tabernacle/Temple, the place where heaven and earth meet.
    .
God’s plan for the redemption of humanity is way beyond human wisdom or understanding.
    .
Praying for you and your requests

    1. Lisa H says:

      Oooh that’s good!

    2. Cee Gee says:

  21. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

God had a much bigger plan for David, than to build Him a dwelling place!…so often God’s ways are so much greater and higher than our own!
God promised that David’s name would become one of the greatest names on earth – and it certainly is, who doesn’t know the name of King David!
    .
I thought it very interesting the way Jesus described Himself in Revelation 22:16 – as the “Root and the Offspring of David”. It prompted me to look it up and this is what I found:
The Biblical definition for root – “In biblical literature, the term “root” carries significant metaphorical and theological weight, often symbolizing origin, foundation, and sustenance. The concept of a root is used both literally and figuratively throughout the Scriptures to convey deep spiritual truths and connections.
    .
The Biblical definition for offspring – “The term “offspring” in the Bible generally refers to children or descendants. It is often used to denote lineage, heritage, and the continuation of a family line. The concept of offspring is central to biblical narratives, emphasizing the importance of family, inheritance, and the fulfillment of God’s promises through generations.”
    (Bible Hub)
    .
Jesus is both the foundation and the descendant of David – how cool is that!

Better is one day in the courts of the LORD than a thousand elsewhere – Amen!

@Searching – continued prayers for C.C. May she have a quicker recovery and be able to be back home, to heal there soon.

I like that you shared biblical meaning of “roots!” That my first lesson in my new class starting tomorrow “Balance & Strength with Jesus!” Creating a Firm foundation….starting with good roots!

    3. Adrienne says:

Thank you so much, Sharon. ❤️

  22. Rhonda J says:

I loved that God says “I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, to be ruler over my people Israel. I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have destroyed all your enemies before you. I will make a great name for you like that of the greatest on the earth.”
I thought..remember how hard it was for David to actually take the throne?! Half the Psalms are of him lamenting, hiding in caves, wondering if God had forgotten him?! But God was with him! (we know this, but Nathan was reaffirming it to David!) Even though we know God has “a hope and future for us, not to harm us..” it is not easy. In fact for David, Paul, Joseph, Moses, Ruth, Joshua..all of them. Their life WITH Jesus was full of challenges and tragedy and seasons of waiting…but Victory! And God’s hand was on them even when it doesn’t seem like it! That is so powerful for us to remember in every affliction and valley, pit, lions den, fire, prison, and cave!! And our testimony is more impactful when people see us praising and worshiping God during these times just like the heroes of the faith! God promises us Jesus, He is our Savior and Lord, that redeems us, so we too, have the hand of God on us. The Holy Spirit is in us as a believer to walk the path strong is endurance and perseverance.

There is the show on Prime “House of David.” I like it. I know shows are hard to please everyone, but I like seeing the stories that we read about. It begins with David as a Shepherd boy called to be King by Sammuel. I love both actors they play them, and Saul!

I have a praise, this past Wed at jail ministry when I gave the altar call, Laura raised her hand (barely and shyly) but praise God! In an email she said she stays mainly in her cell and reads her Bible every morning and night, Psalms! Pray these seeds take hold and grow roots, and that she has healing from the trauma and loss of her 2 toddler girls. We had 13 ladies!

    1. Jane K says:

Love that Laura accepted His invitation! ❤️

  23. Erica Chiarelli says:

God the Father with God the Son!
His redemption was coming! And our Redeemer draws near and is soon coming again! Hallelujah!!!

  24. Monie Mag says:

Well, I can see in this story why David was called a man after God‘s own heart. David had a great desire to do something for God. But then we see God‘s heart and how he flips it and makes it about His love toward us. God gently tells David that one of his descendants will be the one who will build a house for his name. In Jeremiah 23:5-6, Jeremiah says, Behold the days are coming, says the Lord, that I will raise to David a Branch of Righteousness, a King shall reign and prosper, and execute righteousness in the Earth. Now this is his name by which he will be called: the “Lord our Righteousness”.And there it is, unless Jesus becomes our righteousness we will not be able to stand before God. I’m so thankful for the plan of our God that his Son Jesus will be our righteousness because our Heavenly Father wants us in heaven with him.❤️

    1. Rhonda J. says:

      Yes, So Good Monie Mag!

    2. Cheryl Blow says:

  25. Searching says:

Q1 we see the lineage of Christ clearly laid out for us in Matthew 1:1-17, generation after generation, beginning with Abraham. In looking at the sequence of families and births, we see the work of the hand of God through each. The declaration God gave Nathan for David regarding David’s son building the temple – this was before David ever lusted after Bathsheba, before Solomon was born to them.
Q2 – As we read the history of mankind and how God guides, disciplines, forgives, redeems – how can we doubt that God’s plan is for our turning to Him, for salvation and redemption? Every piece of this history leads to Christ.
    .
ADRIENNE – I hear ya! praying for you and your mom, maybe ask/tell her to be ready 15-30 min sooner than needed?
Praying for Jon’s interviews and his discernment.
MERCY ❤️ “Discontent is often the gateway to sin.”
“The right response to corrupt situations is to run faster toward the one true Shepherd, the Lord Jesus Christ, who laid down His life for the sheep.” Amen and amen.
“He is a Father who sometimes in His holiness and His sorrow permits us to walk the road we have chosen so that we might learn what He was trying to tell us all along.”
“God gave them what they asked for. This should not comfort us, this isn’t a blessing, but should be a wake up call.” More amens, thank you.

  26. Lisa Anglin says:

What stood out to me in today’s reading is that God’s promise to David was bigger than David himself. The promise of an eternal kingdom and throne was ultimately fulfilled in Jesus, the Son of David, whose reign will never end. It reminds me that God always keeps His promises, even when the fulfillment comes in ways people may not expect.

It shows that God’s plan was unfolding long before Jesus came. From David’s kingdom to Christ’s eternal kingdom, we see God faithfully working out His plan to redeem His people and bring them into relationship with Him.

  27. Tami says:

GM ladies. #1 God told David he would “raise up his descendant and establish his throne forever.” This promise was fulfilled with Solomon, but ultimately with Christ who is the “root of David”. #2 There is nothing that God does not have His hand in. God had a plan from the beginning and nothing could stop his rescue mission once it was put into motion. He can use anyone He wants to accomplish His mission and, oftentimes, it is those we would never pick (Rahab, Ruth, David).

Who am I, that the Lord of all the earth would care to know my name?
