1 & 2 Kings

Open Your Bible

1 Kings 18:30-39, 2 Kings 8:16-29, Matthew 2:1-6, Revelation 19:16

Scripture Reading: 1 Kings 18:30-39, 2 Kings 8:16-29, Matthew 2:1-6, Revelation 19:16

This Is the Old Testament is part of a twelve-week thematic overview of the entire Bible. Each day we’ll read a thematic selection from a different book or two of the Bible, along with supplemental passages that show how the theme of that day’s main reading is found throughout Scripture. We’ll also read a brief summary of each book and a reflection on how the book fits into the larger story of Scripture. This week, we’ll finish the Historical Books and move into the genre of Wisdom Literature.

The Book of 1 Kings: The book of 1 Kings recounts the final days of King David’s rule, King Solomon’s prosperous and relatively peaceful reign, and a civil war that divided the nation into two separate kingdoms, both ruled by kings mostly failed to follow God.

The Book of 2 Kings: The book of 2 Kings continues where 1 Kings ends, with more stories of the kings in the divided kingdom of Israel and Judah who ignored God and the prophets until both kingdoms fell to other nations. It also chronicles the prophetic ministries of Elijah and Elisha.

How 1 & 2 Kings Fit Into the Story: The Jewish exiles in Babylon longed for an explanation for what they saw as the failure of the religious system in Israel that led to their captivity. The books of 1 & 2 Kings were written during this period. These two books interpret Hebrew history in light of Old Testament covenant theology, finding the failure was due not to God but to God’s people, who did not uphold their part of the covenant. But God’s gracious and merciful character is displayed throughout Israel’s unfaithful history, emphasizing that He is faithful to His covenant with us, even when we are not.

Reflection Questions:
1. How does a faithful recognition of God’s kingship change your view of authority here on earth?
2. How does today’s reading shape your understanding of the story of redemption?

Take time to reflect on your responses and share what you are learning with others in the community in the comments.

Being reminded of Jesus’ kingship in my life convicts and encourages me. He is our perfect Shepherd-King and I want to so much to live u see His perfect Lordship.

  2. Mari V says:

Good morning beautiful she’s! I mentioned I believe on Friday that I’ll be doing the Morning and Dancing devo with a friend. We have the study guide. I will chime in for this current plan as much as I can. I am officially on Summer Break! Therefore when I join you it will be much later.

    1. God is in control no matter what is going on the in our world. Even when it gets scary, I remind myself, MY GOD is bigger and in control.

    2. Redemption was always part of His plan. All we need to do is accept it. I wish more people would realize that. I can get so down on myself when I fail, yet I know My JESUS forgives me EVERY time.

Happy Monday y’all. I am so grateful for this break. Please pray I would be “wise” with the resources I have. Please continue to pray for Caleb as this job as they are requiring a lot of info/background, etc… and its taking a long time. Meanwhile he applied at another local coffee shop, but not enough hours and pay. Also Alyssa applied for another “on campus” job and planning to apply at another one as well on campus.

  3. Erica Chiarelli says:

    1. Everyone is under the reign of God as King, whether they realize it or not, or whether they want to recognize it or not.
2.We see that God would continue to allow Judah and his line to continue, despite their failure to follow God as their ultimate King. He does this because He promises, and because God is always faithful to His word! God never fails; He always makes a way—even for the eventual coming of Jesus to earth the first time, legally, as a baby. He did not give up on us! Thank You for never giving up on Your people, for never giving up on the world, and for making even those outside of Your people and covenant brought near by the blood of Jesus!

  4. Traci Gendron says:

I’m totally with Rhonda here. Why don’t more christians vote? And yes I agree that God is our King, but we have a responsibility to our nation as well. It would be like not taking your child to a doctor and being prayer alone will heal them.

    1. Traci Gendron says:

      Believing prayer…sorry about that.

  5. Cheryl Blow says:

This is just a reminder to me that God is in control. My job is to trust God, keep my focus on Him, and pray for those in leadership whether nation, state, or city. Our prayers make a difference.

How does it shape my understanding of God’s redemption? God is always working and He is faithful to His promise, and He always makes away for His children! He is sovereign and no matter how much the world seems to be spinning off its axis, He is holding it all together.

He is a good Father and we can always trust Him!

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Truth! God is in control! But I believe as faithful followers we have a big part to play! It takes action on our part to make people aware that he is indeed King and to be praised, worshipped, and obeyed. Give us strength Lord, and keep you in our center! To speak when you tell us to, and to be quiet.
I love when King Josiah comes in and takes the idols down. His heart was saddened of where the nation had come to, fallen so far away! But God gave him lots of people to turn it around!
He died and then it drifted away again. there has to be the remenant that stays with God and helps leaders.

I also meant to say that there is a book series on Kings, historical fiction, that makes the history and scriptures relatable and understandable, interesting, and rememberable. I think the title is King of Kings ..by…?? Actually someone here told us about it last time we studied Kings! Y’all will have to Google…I got to get ready for a boat ride! hubby promises to go slow and easy for my back! It’s me taking action to make him happy over myself! ;)

      1. MarieS says:

Be careful, Rhonda, those backs can be so unpredictable. I hope your husband is grateful for your company and all goes well.

  6. Tricia C says:

God is our King forever! He doesn’t come and go every four years. He rules and is in control. There is no reason to fear.
    Psalm 118:6-
    “The Lord is on my side;
    I will not fear.
What can man do to me?”

    Thank you Lord!

Tami, thank you for the list again today. God be glorified. ♥

  7. Cee Gee says:

Lost my comment – page closed on me! I will just say that there is only One authority I bow to – the Authority of Heaven and earth for all eternity. I respect the positions of earthly authorities as instructed in Romans 13, but God rules over all.

  8. Rhonda J. says:

I love Elijah! Remember he held strong to his convictions when everyone else was blowing down to idols. He needed the Lord to give him strength and power to get the people back on track. It came to a great showdown! Can you imagine…was he nervous? Or did he have enough trust and faith!? He was like, if I’m gonna prove this is not a fluke…I”m gonna not just douse the wood, I’m gonna soak it to prove God is powerful and in charge! I did a study of Elijah, by that name, by Priscilla Shirer! It was so good and went through so many details and meanings! I highly recommend it. It was good as a small group to discuss it with others.
As far as Kings as a whole, we can see the parallel of course in our own countries and nations. In America’s case, we see the line of Presidents come and go and what they do in their reign. We can see as a whole the depart from God and what is right in their own eyes. A decade ago we saw, quietly and only if you were paying attention, many provisions for Christians slip away. At the same time, things we consider sin, were given more leeway and made legal. It has bounce back and forth. Just as Kings 1 & 2 depict. As believers we should stand for our faith and reject the things of the devil. We get to choose who we elect which they did not. To say that Christians should stay out of politics is so ridiculous. We can see the more recent laws shift that have done so much damage to society! The unborn babies being killed (sacrificed) by the hundred thousands. How is this possible in this day and age. Surgeries on kids to change their sex! Not being able to speak truth of the Bible, but it being called hateful and bigotry. We had a huge wake up call in the last decade that did shift it back to conservative values, hallelujah! That was a joyful 2x. Although far from perfect, the needle was shifted. A Spiritual awakening did happen. And is still happening. We are standing with Israel as we should as believers. Jerusalem was made the rightful capital again! Rights of Christians are being put back in place here. Law breakers are being held accountable. We are not going to celebrate sin and call it Pride. We are not going to let children change their sex when they are under age. You will never convince me how you are a believer but don’t stand firm on our values and God’s laws in politics. Christ followers will be labeled and called names. But if you do not stand for the name of Jesus in front of others, Jesus will not stand for you.
“Will you lay down your life for me?” Will you suffer for me? Will you stand firm for me. will you stand against the rest of the world? Even when it’s hard, even when you are a small remanant(sp?)
We know by Revelations that the world will still and always be rebellious and lost, and living for the devil. Give us the strength we need O Lord!!

The ONLY way to know God’s will is to stay rooted and grounded in Him and in his word. Praying for eyes to see and to show you the way. To be strong and courageous in a lost world. Directed and guided by what we can do with our words and actions.
Let us be the salt and light Lord. Let us have righteous anger for what angers you. Let us not be swayed by “phrases that sound good,” and wrapped with a bow even when it is not. Your word is clear. Let us not stumble and fall Lord, but walk with your lamp guiding our feet and lighting our path. For you are the Maker of heaven and earth. It is a Spiritual battle and war. But we are victorious with you, in You. Thank you Jesus! Nothing is new under the sun, and if we know you there is nothing to fear! Amen.

Abbey Ramsey said it good below-

The Lord is faithful even when His people are not. He provided a way for His people even when they turned away from Him. I am thankful that even when I struggle to see His plan that He still has one. He keeps His promises and truly is the King of kings!

Thank you for the prayers for back pain. My class went great! God has and is healing my overall ability to do and go, and move more than I had been over the last 3 years. And that I am “teaching” exercise again, that I thought was of the past—That is a Praise. Whoop, Whoop! (But…doing more will add more stress! :/)
It was sad to see my friend and co-leader, who was so hopeful in a miracle healing, pass away so unexpectedly on Saturday. But we KNOW that is the ultimate healing!! He had been suffering with such intense pain that could not be figured out that just spiraled. But he is well now! Halelu-JAH!

    1. Traci Gendron says:

I have never understood why so many Christians do not vote. Can you imagine how the elections might go if we all did. It would certainly make a difference. It would show America we do not want sinful leaders.

      1. Cee Gee says:

        Amen! ❤

    2. Cee Gee says:

“But if you do not stand for the name of Jesus in front of others, Jesus will not stand for you.”

      Matthew 10 NLT
32 Everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven.
33 But everyone who denies me here on earth, I will also deny before my Father in heaven.
      .
Glad your meeting went well and again, symoathy in the sudden loss. ❤

    3. Rhonda J. says:

oH, also, I saw that Laura, our butterfly, got transferred back to her home store. I am SO thankful for the 3 weeks she was in our jail, That she requested a Bible and started reading it for the first time! that she came to our class that first week and God was still moving on her and then this past week that she raised her hand for salvation call!! pray that she keep leaning on the Lord and that roots grow! She will face a lot of outlash for her negligence that led to the loss of her two toddlers and though she is forgiven, we still have consequences we know. But God..he is merciful and just, and may his will be done in her life and we pray for that to help strengthen her.

    4. Mercy says:

Amen 100%. Christians need to be in politics to implement the Book of God’s Laws into the laws of the lands. We see the Islam laws integrating slowly in Canada, and also in New York. We need the Daniels in the government to stand firm, who would fast and pray, and the Esthers next to the kings to intercede to protect the death of little children or the death of the nations. But who will say “send me Lord”. Praying for your back and the boat ride, and Laura. So sorry to hear about the sudden loss of your friend.

      1. Margaret W. says:

My daughter works for the government of New York City, and I can assure you that religious freedom is alive and well in NYC. While the mayor is not a Christian, he shows respect for the faith of all citizens and their beliefs, and he is working to make sure all citizens have their rights protected and that they can afford to live there and get the healthcare they need. She works in public health, so she is building her career on serving everyone. And separation of church and state is absolutely vital for this. Christianity always suffers when we become the state religion. One of the fastest growing places in the world for the church right now is Iran. If that surprises you, maybe we should all rethink what we pray for. And that is WHY we pray in Jesus’ name. Because none of us is wise enough to know what to ask for (myself included.)

  9. Wendy B says:

No matter whose name it is we refer to as leader, ultimately, our King Jesus is Lord over all. We are to pray for and respect that authority – it is the person government that God has established.
“Let everyone submit to the governing authorities, since there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are instituted by God.” Rom 13:1
These days it can be so hard because we have just fallen so far away from what our countries were built upon, and we are broken, wayward mess and yet we can still trust the our Almighty God holds it all and look to Him to be out ultimatel authority and He reigns above it all.

This verse really stood out to me
“When all the people saw it, they fell facedown and said, “The Lord, he is God! The Lord, he is God!” 1 Kings 18:39

The power, might, authority and strength of who God is and what He can do is laid out for is in 1 Kings. May my heart be postured to humbly fall down with hands lifted high and proclaim Lord, you are God.

  10. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

Evil kings will come and go but God our King will reign forever and ever!
    .
No matter who is king, president or in higher authority here on earth – God is the true King of kings. He rules over every authority and their heart is in His hand, God directs it to where it should go. Therefore, I can not and will not let myself worry or fear because of the state of our nation or the world.
    .
    “The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord;
he turns it wherever he will.” Proverbs 21:1
    .
Jesus Christ is our Redeemer King and one day He will rule on this earth. (The 1,000-year reign will be the beginning of Jesus’ reign over Israel and the earth (Revelation 20:4, 6).
    .
What a day of rejoicing that will be! …I have been redeemed by the blood of the lamb and will forever live with Him.

    Happy Monday She’s!

    1. Tricia C says:

      Yes! Amen and Amen! ♥

    2. Shar says:

Yes, I was going to mention Proverbs 21:1.We can get so anxious when the “wrong” leader is in power, but it is such a comfort to know that the leader is in God’s control and His plan will not be thwarted.

  11. Abbey Ramsey says:

The Lord is faithful even when His people are not. He provided a way for His people even when they turned away from Him. I am thankful that even when I struggle to see His plan that He still has one. He keeps His promises and truly is the King of kings! Yesterday at church we sang the Revelation Song and it’s such a great reminder.

    1. Adrienne says:

“when I struggle to see His plan that He still has one.”
      .
      Amen, Abbey!

  12. Shelby Foltz says:

16For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
    Colossians 1:16-20
Thank God that He holds all things together!

  13. Searching says:

Q1 my first thought is, every time I read of these evil kings, won’t y’all ever learn?! The nearly irresistible pull of evil, the lure of short-lived pleasures, the temporary soothing of egos – even in our Iives today, as believers, at times we succumb to these same things. Even when God has clearly worked in nearly unbelievable ways in our lives, even when we have witnessed or been directly affected by what is a miracle by anyone’s definition- still, we push aside God’s majesty, authority, love, mercy and grace. Even after watching Elijah’s drenched and water-soaked sacrifice being consumed by the fire of the LORD, still, they turned away from what was confirmed to them, to their faces, “Now when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, “The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!” Recognized without a doubt and then disregarded.
As it was in the days of the kings, earthly authority at every level is put in place by God or at a minimum is allowed by God. He is still on the throne, our ultimate and only true King, praise His Holy Name!
    .
Q2 Jesus, always God’s plan for our salvation and redemption.
    Romans 5:1-5
1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
    .
Let’s stand firm in our faith, sisters.
    .
No updates this weekend on CC.

  14. LaRae Taylor says:

I’m so thankful He holds it all in His hands!!

  15. Tanya Evans says:

The Israelites told the prophet Samuel they wanted a king. They rejected God’s sovereignty; essentially God’s kingship over their nation.
However God allowed them to have a long succession of Kings ( some good, some bad) until it was time for the one and true king to enter into time and history; Jesus Christ.
Recognition of God’s kingship reminds us that we live in an alternate kingdom. We are in the “already and not yet”. We are citizens of another country functioning as ambassadors for the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

    1. Cheryl Blow says:

      ❤️

  16. Susan Burley says:

Sometimes it’s easy for me to forget God’s great power. Obviously, I believe in it, but reading 1 Kings and imagining Him sending down fire to consume the burnt offering is amazing to think about! May God continue to be the ultimate authority in each of our lives!

    1. Rhonda J says:

Yes, this would be cool to see a movie about this to see it more visually! I did a study by Priscillia Shirer “Elijah” that was really, really good.

  17. Teresa Cooper Donley says:

For me, there is no comparison between God’s kingship and authority here on earth. As the kings of Israel showed us, and earthly king can either follow God’s ways, or go the way of the world and do evil in the sight of the Lord. Only God is truly King. We can, and should, pray for our earthly leaders to walk in the way of the Lord, while also realizing that there is only one true King over our lives, our country and the world.

I loved reading the story of Elijah calling down fire from heaven to consume the altar today. When I was a little girl in children’s church, I remember being fascinated by this story. Elijah having water poured all over the altar, and God still sending a fire hot enough to consume not only the sacrifice, but the altar and everything around it. My little girl imagination could just picture the whole scene, and I was amazed at the power of God. I also wanted to be like Elijah, and be able to pray a prayer so powerful God would send fire from heaven. Hopefully, I’ve matured to the point I realize my prayers to God are heard just as powerfully by Him. He heard Elijah’s prayer. He also hears my prayers today. He answers with love, in His will, and His timing, every time.

    1. Searching says:

      Thank you! ❤️

  18. Lisa Anglin says:

Recognizing God as the true King helps me remember that no earthly authority is ultimate. It encourages me to trust God’s wisdom and sovereignty above all else.

Today’s reading also highlighted the story of redemption for me. The failures of Israel’s kings reveal our need for a perfect King, and God’s faithfulness throughout their failures points us to Jesus, who fulfills that need completely.

  19. Kayla Bostwick says:

When we think of God’s kingship, it gives us eternal hope in the midst of broken earthly leadership. Our hope, as was Israel’s, is not in an an earthly king, but in the faithful character of the King of Kings. Praise God for never letting us go!

    1. Teresa Cooper Donley says:

      Amen ❤️

  20. Aimee D-R says:

    Amen

  21. Tami says:

Q1 – My husband tends to worry about the world, the state of politics, who is in office, etc… and can have a bit of a “doomsday” mentality, which he likes to talk about at night as we are about to go to sleep. (Me, I’m thinking of my morning coffee.) I worry about a lot of other things (our kids mostly), but not this. My response to him all the time is, “ultimately God is in control, if He put them if office, He wants them there”. This goes to what Kelly (Neo) wrote, “no earthly authority is at place without God allowing it”.
Q2 – God is a promise keeper. He made a promise and He stuck with it, no matter how the Israelites failed at keeping their end of the bargain. Failure after failure, the Lord showed mercy and grace to His chosen people. And we are the recipients of that grace also. Daily it could be said of me, “And Tami did what was evil in the sight of the Lord…” BUT God…

    1. Teresa Cooper Donley says:

Wow, Tami. That last line really hit home for me. Daily it could be said, “And Teresa did evil in the sight of the Lord.” BUT GOD…

How true is that! God’s love, His redemption story is everything.

Thank you for putting it so clearly.

    2. Searching says:

This stopped me in my tracks “And ______ did what was evil in the sight of the Lord…”
My name goes there too. Dear Lord, I am so sorry, please forgive me, and guide me going forward.

    3. Rhonda J. says:

I so relate to what you say about your husband being caught up in our leaders. When they are bad, oh boy does he go on the rampage of them all the time. I, too, try to remind him God has put them there. He uses every leader in ways we can’t see. Sometimes, many times, to wake people up. We do need to be involved and always pray for them.

    4. Adrienne says:

Your husband and mine are quite similar… brothers from another mother?!?!

      1. searching says:

I have one too – triplets, perhaps???

  22. Kelly (NEO) says:

So few of Israel and Judah’s kings were faithful to recognize the truth of God’s ultimate kingship and believed they were in control. Same is true with the leaders of countries today yet no eartly authority is in place without God allowing it.
    .
Romans 13:1 “Let everyone submit to the governing authorities, since there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are instituted by God.”
    .
    1 Tim. 2:1-4
“First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all those who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. This is good, and it pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
    .
Today’s reading shows me that God’s story of redemption includes His people enduring through poor human leadership as a contrast to His ever faithful and loving leadership.

    1. Tami says:

This is such great insight Kelly! Thank you! I was struggling with question 1 today and this was really helpful!

    2. Alana Anderson says:

      This is super helpful…thank you!

    3. Searching says:

      So good! ❤️

    4. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

      ❤️

    5. Cheryl Blow says:

Kelly, this same verse from 1 Tim 2:1-4 was what I was seeing as an example of what we should be doing as believers. Pray for those in leadership. And keep our focus on the One who is in control.

  23. Tami says:

Here is the list of prodigals. Praying that the Lord does a new thing in their lives and surprises us with testimonies this week!
Acts 2:39 For the promise is for you and for your children, and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

Acts 26:18:… open their eyes, so they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God. Then they will receive forgiveness for their sins and be given a place among God’s people, who are set apart by faith in me.

Jeremiah 31:16-17  But now this is what the Lord says: “Do not weep any longer, for I will reward you,” says the Lord. “Your children will come back to you from the distant land of the enemy.17 There is hope for your future,” says the Lord.“Your children will come again to their own land.”

Proverbs 20:7 The righteous who walks in his integrity— blessed are his children after him.

Peter 3:8–9 (CSB): 8 Dear friends, don’t overlook this one fact: With the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. 9 The Lord does not delay his promise, as some understand delay, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish but all to come to repentance.

  24. Rita H says:

There’s is no way better than God’s way. Hhe allows man to try it theirs and He still has to rescue them from their selves.

  25. Hannah Carmel says:

Yes! We know from history and we have excellent teachers today who remind us to put our trust in God. I know that when I step out of the way and say “Gods will be done” His Peace takes over.
    Happy Monday ladies! ❤️

  26. Sally B. says:

This is yesterday’s sermon from Daniel 3 all over again. To whom shall we bow? The world’s loud demands to what is right in their own eyes or to the Lord, the maker of Heaven and earth….
The consequences of ignoring the later and following “all the other nations” were clear for Israel then as they are clear for us now if we just look around at all the carnage.
Lord have mercy and turn us back to You!

  27. Tina says:

    1. How does a faithful recognition of God’s kingship change your view of authority here on earth?
    .
    I smiled at this question!
    .
Let’s face it, there is no comparison of Gods kinship and authority here on earth, certainly not in this lifetime!
    .
The governments and the authorities do not hold God close, nor do they live by the rules of Gods kinship!
    .
    BUT GOD..
    .
If He has said it, then He will do it!
There is no fear or disappointment in Gods words and promises.. truly, there isn’t.
The gift of Jesus to take our sins on the cross should be enough for us to see, He/God keeps His Word! Never changing always true and ever loving the sinner to the point of dying for us, to redeem us!
    .
The verse ‘…as for me and my house..’ (Joshua 24:15b) comes to mind, there is only one God and one authority we need to heed, to listen for and hear. If the authorities are listening to the same Word and voice, we would be of one accord, and i believe the world may just be a different place!
    .
To get, no, GET and understand Gods redemptive love, redemptive forgiveness, redemptive grace and redemptive love.. for sure is the beginning of knowing to whom, and by whose sacrifice you have been set free..
The KING of kings and the LORD of lords..
    .
    BUT GOD..
    .
    AMEN.
    .
Happy Monday, so totally wrapped, this wet and rainy day in warming love, hugs and prayers..
    Much love, you guys,
    Tina ❤️
