John 1:4-5

Scripture is God breathed and true. When we memorize it, we carry the good news of Jesus with us wherever we go.

This week we will memorize John 1:4–5. Here, John continues to draw on the themes of the creation narrative, pointing to Jesus as the source of both life and light. Throughout the Gospels we see Jesus not only identify Himself using these terms, but fulfill them with the actions of His ministry (Jn 11:25; 8:12). Jesus is the Light that has overcome the darkness.

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it.
—John 1:1–5

Can you imagine being trapped in the darkness without the hope of the morning light? I have had nights where it seemed to go on and on, so slow..
Then finally the sun breaks through, bringing hope, warmth, and light. It is the one thing we can count on- the sun will rise! Bringing it’s glorious brightness! And that’s what we have with Jesus!! The hope and salvation that breaks the evil that wants to envelope and take over! Evil can’t win. What a truth to know and take solace in. I know plenty of people that walk in the dark, that NEED the light! They need to know there’s better, there is the One, the healer, the redeemer, restorer…
    graves to garden,
    ashes to beauty, captives freed!!

    I Speak Jesus!
Your name is power, your name is healing, your name is light!! Break every stronghold, shine through the shadows, Burn like a fire!

Shout Jesus from the mountain, Jesus in the darkness over every enemy..Jesus for my family, I speak the holy name Jesus!

    Also singing
Song of the Saints with Phil Whickham this morning!

    Have a beautiful Sunday She’s!

From the NET Bible footnotes on “darkness did not overcome it” in verse 5.
Or “comprehended it,” or “overcome it.” The verb κατέλαβεν (katelaben) is not easy to translate. “To seize” or “to grasp” is possible, but this also permits “to grasp with the mind” in the sense of “to comprehend” (esp. in the middle voice). This is probably another Johannine double meaning—one does not usually think of darkness as trying to “understand” light. For it to mean this, “darkness” must be understood as meaning “certain people,” or perhaps “humanity” at large, darkened in understanding. But in John’s usage, darkness is not normally used of people or a group of people. Rather it usually signifies the evil environment or ‘sphere’ in which people find themselves: “They loved darkness rather than light” (John 3:19). Those who follow Jesus do not walk in darkness (8:12). They are to walk while they have light, lest the darkness “overtake/overcome” them (12:35, same verb as here). For John, with his set of symbols and imagery, darkness is not something which seeks to “understand (comprehend)” the light, but represents the forces of evil which seek to “overcome (conquer)” it. The English verb “to master” may be used in both sorts of contexts, as “he mastered his lesson” and “he mastered his opponent.”

As one of the stars that God told Abraham to count, I pray I shine in the darkness!

The Good News Translation says it this way..
    .
The Word was the source of life, and this life brought light to people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has never put it out.
    .
    Understood!
    .
I am thinking about the great grandson whom I am blessed to see 3.5 days a week. He is 2 and very verbal. Not babble, proper words strung together to make sentences..
He is such a good boy. He listens to Nana and we have fun together..
He holds on to Nanas words, Nanas words are gospel. They are truth. So deviate from that which his little 2 year old mind has accepted, and things go pear shape!
    .
I think the same with us and the Word.
When we accept Jesus as our personal Savior, when we believe we can not do life without Him, when we confess to having faith in Him, when we trust His power over the darkness, and know He is with us, within us and around us.., always… we sure do have a great SOURCE to live life well. To trust all is as it should be, even if we can not understand..
The Word WAS, but He IS still, even today, our greatest source of life in this broken world. We may live, sometimes, in confused darkness ..
    .
    BUT GOD..
    .
..has given us a Hope in that darkness, that shines bright around and within us, pointing if we live right, others to Him and the light He can shine in them..
    .
    Amen..
    .
Glory Hallelujah. All Praise to Him who shines bright in us..

I am struggling with memorization this time, especially. Any tips? Verse three killed me, and now verse four is upon me. Ugh! Maybe it is so hard because it is so familiar? I don’t know!

    Blessed Sunday to you all!

    1. Samantha M. says:

Same here! I gave myself permission with verse 3 (and many other scriptures) to memorize the point of the verse and not get caught up in word for word. For example for verse 3 I “memorized” it like this: all things were created through Him, nothing was created apart for Him.

      1. Cee Gee says:

Same! I try to remember the ‘address’ and key words/phrases so I can find it quickly if necessary. ❤

    2. Kelly (NEO) says:

Maybe writing it over and over?

I have an app on my phone for memorizing scripture because I am the worst. You learn in 3 steps, recalling the first letter of each word. It helps, then your collection stays there so you can go back to your older ones.
