Proverbs 1:7

Scripture is God breathed and true. When we memorize it, we carry His Word with us wherever we go.

At the conclusion of each section of this reading plan, we will commit to memory a proverb that summarizes the theme of the week’s reading. This week, we will memorize our key verse, a proverb about the fear of God and the wisdom that God offers believers.

The fear of the LORD
is the beginning of knowledge;
fools despise wisdom and discipline.
—Proverbs 1:7

We fear the lord first because I think he reveals our sin and it’s truly a beautiful thing!

  8. Rebecca Winkler says:

I think the key to keep in mind is “fear” doesn’t mean we are afraid. To “fear God” means to hold a profound reverence, awe, and respect for God’s power and majesty, recognizing His authority and striving to live in a way that pleases Him.

  9. Heather G says:

    Fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Lord please help me to learn and grow every day. Please forgive me for my sins and the way I have looked back on worldly desire or temporary fulfillment. I pray that I act consistently, pure heartily, with serious intent and and dependence on your word, breath and presence in my life.

KJV says – The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

NLT says – Fear of the LORD is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

AMP says – The [reverent] fear of the LORD [that is, worshiping Him and regarding Him as truly awesome] is the beginning and the preeminent part of knowledge [its starting point and its essence]; But arrogant fools despise [skillful and godly] wisdom and instruction and self-discipline.

CEV says – Respect and obey the LORD! This is the beginning of knowledge. Only a fool rejects wisdom and good advice.

GNT says – To have knowledge, you must first have reverence for the LORD. Stupid people have no respect for wisdom and refuse to learn.

Happy Sunday beautiful She’s! Woke up an hour ago to a cool beautiful gorgeous day and my daughter got up as well and we sat here talked and talked and she shared what she was reading and we talked some more. God is good! Now its time to make breakfast before church. Going to my kiddos church this morning as my daughter needs a ride since my son just left to work at the coffee shop. The fear of the LORD for me tells me to have reverence for my God! He is EVERYTHING for me! I don’t want to be anywhere else or look up to anyone else but to my JESUS!

  21. Wendy B says:

I love this verse. If we can seek out that knowledge, and its just the beginning, how much growth, understanding and blessing will be for us in pursuit of continuing to seek that knowledge? Even though we will never fully understand the depth and awesomeness of our God the journey to pursue Him is such a richness to our lives and it leads us so well, guiding us away from harm and heartache. Heavenly Father, my hearts desire is to seek you, know you and walk in step with your ways, to have an undivided heart and to grow in wisdom and knowledge. Thank you for your Word that points us to you. Thank you for these sisters that share in ways to challenge, build up and support one another and the SRT leaders that are committed to the ministry of your Word. Encourage and lead us Lord as we seek to know you. Be with us this day as we have opportunity to meet with our church families to further know you and be in community face to face. Build your church Lord. We love you and praise you for who you are. Amen.✝️

Thank you friends, for your encouragement, shared excitement and praying. No troubles on the first part of my drive and I had just lovely visit with my dear friend last night and her beautiful hospitality is a blessing. You know those heartfilling people? She is one of those to me. I’ll be on my way shortly for the rest of the drive. I am just so excited to see my daughter(its her 25th Birthday today), my SIL and to hold my grandson. Again, thank you for sharing in the joy.
I won’t be able to share photos on FB as my daughter and her hubby are not comfortable with social media posting of him, but just imagine the cutest baby boy. Ha, ha. ❤️

    1. Mari V says:

How sweet Wendy….will continue to pray as you travel some more. Enjoy your little grandson!

  26. Cee Gee says:

I noticed less variation in this verse from one translation to another. NLT has added one little word – TRUE and uses the word FOUNDATION in place of beginning. I like that reminder.May we seek only the TRUE Wisdom provided by God’s Word and His Holy guidance and firm foundation.

    Proverbs 1:7 NLT
Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
    .

    MACARTHUR said..
The fear of the Lord is a state of mind in which one’s own attitudes, will, feelings, deeds, and goals are exchanged for God’s…”
    .

    WIERSBE SAYS:
“If we truly “fear” the Lord, we acknowledge from our hearts that He’s the Creator, we’re the creatures; He’s the Father, we’re His children; He’s the Master, we’re the servants. It means
respecting God for who He is,
listening carefully to what He says, and
obeying His Word, knowing that our disobedience displeases Him, breaks our fellowship with Him, and invites His chastening. This is not the servile fear of the slave before the master but the reverential and respectful fear of the child before the parent.”

    .
Reminded of the hymn How Firm the Foundation (partial lyrics):

How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord
Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word
What more can He say than to you He hath said
To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled
Fear not, I am with thee; oh be not dismayed
For I am thy God and will still give thee aid
I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand
Upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand

Also reminded of Holy Forever by Chris Tomlin.
    “And the angels cry holy
    All creation cries holy
    You are lifted high, holy
    Holy forever
    Hear Your people sing holy
To the King of kings, holy
    You will always be holy
    Holy forever
    Your name is the highest
    Your name is the greatest
Your name stands above them all
    All thrones and dominions
    All powers and positions
Your name stands above them all”

    .

    3. Rhonda J. says:

Yes, love the Wiersbe commentary!!So convicting and a great song. I listened to my church live just now! We are doing Revelations, I have to admit is was a little soft, for a better word!! I feel like in this day and time we need a little more sharpening from our pastors like the letters to the churches. But maybe b/c I listen to Phillip Anthony Mitchell! I don’t want to be luke warm, I want my fire to stay a flame, even through hard and suffering! I need a firm foundation and the solid rock, and a preacher that firs me up!
Thanks for the prayers! Can’t wait to see my son today!! Its been since Feb!

  30. Tina says:

Google tells me ‘the fear of the LORD’ is …deep reverence, awe, and respectful submission to God, rather than a cowering terror of His power. It means acknowledging God’s supreme holiness, power, and majesty, and living in obedience to His will as the foundation of wisdom and a godly life.
    .
    .
Lord, may I always have a deep reverence, and awe, and a respectful submission to You.
May I always acknowledge Your supreme holiness, power and majesty and live in obiedience to your will which is the foundation of wisdom and Godly life..
    .
    May it be so..

  31. Laura Breen says:

Recently I’ve had folks bring up theology more distinctly. At every opportunity I’ve said whole heartedly I believe in God the father, Jesus the son, and the Holy Spirit. It’s amazing to me how I’ve been having these interactions increasingly where I have the chance to declare my faith publicly. It feels like a calling to bring the Holy Spirit out of the periphery and into the forefront. It feels so good to be available to speak truth into the day to day. I am always a bit taken aback by the way God uses us for his glory. How simple it can be like just saying yes I believe in God and watching the good work begin in them, all from a simple yes from me.

    1. Tina says:

So very true Lauren! Even if the person was not ready to listen… trust me, they heard what you said, which opens up more of a conversion when you meet again.. because they want to know more..
God would use us every day if we were open..
      .
      God is good..
      Amen..❤️

    3. Rhonda J. says:
