Hebrews 5:7-9

Scripture is God-breathed and true. When we memorize it, we carry the good news of Jesus with us wherever we go.

For this plan, we will memorize Hebrews 5:7–9, a passage from this study that summarizes how Jesus is both the firm foundation of our faith and how we are to imitate Jesus’s faith in our own response to God. We’ll begin by memorizing the first half of verse 7.

7 During his earthly life, he offered prayers and appeals with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. 8 Although he was the Son, he learned obedience from what he suffered. 9 After he was perfected, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him…
—Hebrews 5:7–9

    I had to keep rereading Hebrews 5:7-9. What came to mind was I had walked through a rough patch here this past month and landed me working at The school district office. Even through those times God was with me. He gave me the peace I needed to get through. It gave me comfort knowing that HE had walked before me and was there by my side through the whole thing.

    I’m comforted knowing Jesus experienced internal anguish during his suffering – he knows what it means to be sorrowful and distraught, and he prayed with loud cries. He is the Son, but he suffered just like we do.

    We are on vacation with the camper by the river for a few days. Sitting outside this morning just relaxing in the cool weather and I heard the most amazing sound. We are in a little Texas town and we heard the church bells ringing. It was such an amazing sound. I’m not sure I have ever actually heard them in person. It was so refreshing. Later we were able to meet up with our former pastor and his wife and son, who was in our youth group when we first started doing youth ministry. It was such a blessing. Exactly what we needed.

    Interesting that Jesus learned obedience through suffering. It was required to become perfect. This is not how i often see suffering.

    Worshipped today at our “church away from home” in CT. We sang “Jesu, Jesu” don’t know how many of you know the song, but it speaks to what being a Christian is. Love the melody! May your day be blessed.

    To the ONE who was able! And HE did! And here WE are! Thank you JESUS! Happy Sunday sweeties!! I going to church this evening with my kiddos instead of going this morning. Resting. Cleaning. Time with my daughter (even though she’ll be working on homework) at a coffee shop. Sometimes I wonder (rambling here a bit) if having my fitbit and knowing “how-much-I-slept” is helpful. Yesterday I slept over 7 hours, last night “almost” 7 hours (6h 52m). I really want to get to 8 hours daily, but I wake up A LOT during the night! BUT GOD….yep thank you JESUS I do feel pretty good this morning and rested.

    1. Rhonda J. says:

      Hi Mari! I ramble all the time, lol!! We also didn’t go to church this morning because it just felt good to lay and rest with my husband, so we ended up watching online sitting outside in our gorgeous weather this morning! I used to wake up all night and magnesium has made a huge difference! Glad you are having a great Sunday and not thinking about the looming work tomorrow yet! lol.

      1. Mari V says:

        Love you sweet girl.

  24. Traci Gendron says:

    Hello! I was on a trip and today I’m reading the entire week. So many good comments. As most of you know the hardest time of my life that God carried me through was my son, Tanner, illness and death. Clair Mote I cry in church all the time! I cry to Christian music. I just listened to Honey in the Rock. So good!!

    Ladies it seems we have all been through trials. BUT look where we are. God has been faithful. We are able to study together from all areas of the world!!

    1. Mari V says:

      Good morning sweet Traci!! YES….”look” where we are! Thank you Jesus! I too, LOVE we are able to study together from all-areas-of-the-world! Can’t wait to meet you all some day and give you ALL a “real” hug. So meanwhile as Tina always says: “Sending you hugs across the pond”

      1. Rhonda J. says:

        Yes, amen! so good!

        Traci- you must be on Klove too, I was just singing to Honey in the Rock! Brandon Lake was the BEST concert I have ever been to!! I still don’t see how you make it without Tanner, but you tell us it is ALL GOD and hopefully our prayers as well here from your She’s!

    @sarah Ritchie the Bible memory app pro version is amazing for memorizing scripture! The icon is an open red Bible with a cross inside it.

    1. Rhonda J. says:

      Oh I should look into this! I need all the help I can get! I just started memorizing scripture 2 years ago after being a Christian my whole life!! We are told to bury the word in us, and it really is helpful to KNOW the word to help others in their walk, not as a Pharisee throwing out scripture, but to pertain to their need, know God’s word never returns void!

      1. Rhonda J. says:

        Love this app, been using it all day to help me with Romans 12:2 and it really works!

    2. Mari V says:

      Looking this up right now. Thank you Phobie!

    3. Sarah Ritchie says:

      Thank you Phobie!!!!

  26. Sarah Ritchie says:

    May I ask you all a question? Do you all actually try to memorize the verse each week? Thanks!

    1. Barb D says:

      Sarah Ritchie, yes, I work on Scripture memory, even though I’m certainly not as good at it in my latter years. At least it plants those words for general recall when the Holy Spirit taps on my shoulder in a given situation where those words are needed.

      1. Sarah Ritchie says:

        Thanknyou Barb. I’m going to challenge myself!

    2. Mari V says:

      Yes and I’m not always successful. I know I could try harder, and feel the noise of “the-must-do’s” get in the way for me.

      1. Sarah Ritchie says:

        Thank you Mari. I am going to make a more concerted effort. I am a SPED teacher and always look out for your posts and day an extra prayer for you.

  27. Jody Striker says:

    Yes, we offer our prayers to the one who can save us from death and everything else.

  28. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

    “…He is able” – praise God!
    ~~~~~~~~
    It reminds me of the chorus of an old hymn we used to sing…
    “He is able to deliver thee, he is able to deliver thee, tho by sin oppressed, go to him for rest, our God is able to deliver thee.”
    ~~~~~~~~~
    Blessings to each of you n this day of worship. ❤️

  29. Gwineth52 says:

    Good Morning Shes
    I am struck by how little I know about suffering. In my current, comfortable life. Not sick, not struggling. Not persecuted, not perplexed. Momentarily unlike Paul who saw his suffering as sacrifice to Christ.
    I pray in my ignorance to grow neither vain nor presumptuous.
    It is by His Grace & His Generosity…
    wherever, whenever, however…
    I may experience this earthly life.
    Let me be glad in it.
    I pray also in His infinite Might & Mercy to comfort & care for my SRT sisters in whatever trial(s) they may confront.
    He is able to carry you, us, through.
    Amen & Amen

    1. Rhonda J. says:

      It is true that we know “little” of true suffering as we all live in America and have a cushy life compared to other parts of the world. I just finished a book written in comparison of just that when the author went to spend time to write of the great mudslide in Nicaragua in 1998. But their everyday life was hard in itself, a way of living and of great prayer life for every need. The things we take for granted so easily. He speaks of the Indifference we have for others in suffering. Most things don’t affect us until it does. Thankfully then our tests can become our testimony to help others! That’s what we need to be mindful of, not being indifferent, but looking and searching to be a hand to others in their suffering!

    2. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

      Amen. ❤️

  30. Carol J Mylin says:

    This old Gaithers song “popped into my mind, as I was contemplating JESUS… willing to “learn obedience” walk in my shoes… and give His very life for me… and you…♥️

    “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus; there’s just something about that name
    Master, Savior, Jesus, like the fragrance after the rain;
    Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, let all Heaven and earth proclaim
    Kings and kingdoms will all pass away
    But there’s something about that name
    Kings and kingdoms will all pass away
    But there’s something about that name.”

    So Precious…Thank You, Jesus!! ♥️

  31. Cheryl Blow says:

    So thankful we can turn to the One who is able!

  32. Rhonda J. says:

    GM!
    This is such a somber and sobering verse. The true, coming King, our Savior- coming as a baby (a humble beginning) and lived a perfect, sinless life. But we often forget he was nervous and scared of what was to come, and prayed fervently to His Father. It blows my mind, when He was deity and could have erased it right, with one wave of his hand. Yet he gained comfort through his obedience and faith. We have that same promise as children of God. Not all are children of God, only those that have accepted the gift, and with that comes all of the inheritance! He loves all creation, but he hears his children–!!

    Be thankful the veil was torn, that we have access through Jesus Christ to God! It should blow your mind anew every day. What a joy, what an incredible thing not to be taken for granted one single minute. The song playing right now sums it up nicely- Lauren Daigle “Thank God I Do!” “I don’t know who I would be if I didn’t know you, I would probably fall off the edge..

    Yesterday in our Ephesians study we talked about Paul’s “Damascus Road” experience. And that we all have been CHOSEN, and can now live in that new life! It is a true reminder to live every day with the eagerness, earnestness, hunger, and desire ! To live our life pointing to Jesus! Amen!

    1. Donna Wolcott says:

      ❤️ Amen

  33. Cee Gee says:

    Sisters, thank you all who have been praying for me! I feel strong again and will be going to church in person today! Yay & PTL!! Enjoy your day of worship!
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    NKJV MacArthur Study Bible, 2nd Edition: “Christ did not need to suffer in order to conquer or correct any disobedience. In His deity (as the Son of God), He understood obedience completely. As the incarnate Lord, He humbled Himself to learn (cf. Luke 2:52). He learned obedience for the same reasons He bore temptation: to confirm His humanity and experience its sufferings to the fullest (see notes on 2:10; cf. Luke 2:52; Phil. 2:8). Christ’s obedience was also necessary so that He could fulfill all righteousness (Matt. 3:15) and thus prove to be the perfect sacrifice to take the place of sinners (1 Pet. 3:18). He was the perfectly righteous One, whose righteousness would be imputed to sinners (cf. Rom. 3:24–26).”
