John 1:1

Scripture is God-breathed and true. When we memorize it, we carry the good news of Jesus with us wherever we go.

During this study, we will memorize the first five verses from John’s Gospel. In his prologue, John uses poetic language to describe the identity and nature of Jesus. This week we will memorize the first verse of this passage which identifies Jesus—the Word—as God Himself.

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it.
—John 1:1–5

God was and IS and ALWAYS WILL BE the Word. The Word is what I need to live by. I try but sometimes I fail. God and Christ understand and tell me to get up and try again unlike many humans who will just keep feeding you negativity. I try to remember it doesn’t matter what I’ve done in my past God and Christ have forgiven me and will continue to forgive me whenever I ask for forgiveness. When I have troubles all I have to do is turn to the Word and also pray.
Sisters be blessed and remember ALWAYS BE IN THE WORD.

This is my first ever Bible study (I’m new to Christianity), and my first week has been fantastic. I’ve loved reading the passages, devotionals and the comments on this thread; it’s so much better than reading the Bible alone. Thanks, everyone!

Love this passage. Thank you for the Slugs &Bugs recommendation! I also really love the Seeds Family Worship one, called The Word (John 1:1-14). I taught this one at church last year and an entire group of young kids memorized it! Music really helps! So grateful to be here. Praying through the needs mentioned today. ❤️

    1. Laura Wally says:

Kelly, thank you for your prayers for my son. He is doing well, getting stronger every day. He sees the dr Wednesday to see if he can be released. In the meantime, his wife tested positive and I am not feeling the best. His wife has no symptoms while I have a cough and cold like symptoms. I took a home test last night and it was negative. Not sure how accurate they are. Continued prayers are appreciated.

  32. Abby D says:

‘Slugs and Bugs’ and ‘The Chosen’ are both great ways to watch and learn about God’s word! Any other recommendations? I’d love to spend more time watching/ listening to quality content!

  33. Rhonda J. says:

Beautiful words @JenniferLovesJesus! (again!) You have a way with words that penetrate the heart! Thank you for sharing!

@SarahJoy, glad your husband was safe in his travels, and prayers for your friend you are reaching out to!

Please continue to pray for my unspoken prayer request, it is actually for our 13 yr. old grandson. He is a special boy living in an unfair home environment for many years now. His parents aren’t believers, but I have tried to implement to him and his little sister that there is a God and we can pray to Him anytime about anything, so I’m hoping and praying he will remember that as he is by himself in a special care hospital for the last 5 days. Our poor youth of today are so caught up in a world that is too hard, too busy, too hurtful. We must shine the light and reach these kids! I pray the Lord will guide me to be brave to reach the parents, and that the Lord will soften their hearts, and open up to Him.

Have a great Sunday She’s! May we be good Christian soldiers, marching as to war…WITH the WORD of Jesus, going on before!

  34. Mari V says:

    Praying for your husband GramsieSue.

  35. Jennifer Loves Jesus says:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was fully God.” John 1:1 NET

I love that we are being tasked with memorizing scripture. This is not my strong suit. It’s funny how some things stick in my mind without even trying. There are songs and sayings I can remember from 40 plus years ago. How, in my first decade of life, did those seeds grow into permanent memories? The power of words that get into our minds… without trying. So in grace and trying, I will work to memorize the first verses of John with you. These life giving Word(s) from our Father, put in written form, for us to read and know. To plant in our minds. To grow for and with Jesus.

Thoughts on Creation and the scriptures in John and Genesis: The beginning of all things created by God seems small in comparison to Him. The stories He tells unfold with such gentleness. Formless water was his canvas. First he paints light, then sky, land and seas, sun, moon and stars… a beautiful ballet show of creation. And His Word, The Word, brought forth all we have come to know. And much we may never know. The veiled mystery that will be revealed “then”. (For now we see in a mirror indirectly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully, just as I have been fully known. 1 Cor 13:12) Like a tiny acorn holding the power to become an immensely strong and large oak tree. Living in Louisiana, I see these hundred plus year old oak trees everywhere. I thank God for the reminder. And I thank God for this SRT community where I can experience others seeking God and truth.

Father God, bless those reading here. Give them the power of your mercy to work and love and cultivate life in their world. Let Your hands give comfort, peace, and joy where it seems impossible. Remind us of Your Word, living in us as believers, and what that actually means! The profoundness of creation, the inside out way of understanding the hard things here, and as we wrestle with who we believe Jesus is, knowing He is the Son of God, the Powerful Word of God, the Wisdom of God, who loved us more than we can fathom. He came and gave us what we need, and we are so blessed to know this truth on this side of the gospel story. Remind us that those who seem to have it together, may just be held together by the strength of God. That power that holds all things together is beyond comprehension. Let us love each other well and let the Word bring about all it was set to accomplish. Thank you Jesus, amen.

  36. Brandi says:

Rebecca, this is the perfect place! Will be joining my other Shes in prayer for your son! So glad you are here!

  37. Rebecca says:

Brand new to SRT-Just began last week. Loving it already. Not sure if this is the correct place for prayer requests but asking you to lift up my adult son that his eyes, mind, and heart would be opened and he would believe in our Jesus. He is so very lost. ❤️❤️Thanks

  38. Casey Caliendo says:

Yes!! We love Slugs and Bigs at our house! It’s helped me memorize scripture as much as it has my kids.

  39. Meghan Fox says:

This passage of Scripture is one of my favorites. It really took hold of my heart even more after watching episode 1 of season 2 of “The Chosen”. Hearing this passage spoken over/with Genesis 1 was just beautiful.

  40. Nicole Van Zante says:

If you want a song to listen to to aid your memorization of this passage, check out Randall Goodgame’s “In the Beginning” on Slugs & Bugs’ “Sing the Bible Christmas”. It’s a beautiful song on a beautiful album, not just for kids.

  41. Maria Baer says:

GRAMSIE_SUE: I’m so sorry. Will definitely add your hubby to our prayer list. This is such a tough time for many employers. Have him take walks outside, get some fresh air…. That always helps me too when I’m stressed. Sending love, and prayers for comfort and less stress.

  42. Maria Baer says:

God— OMNIpresent. OMNIpotent. Everlasting. The alpha and the omega. Thank you God, for always being present even during times when it feels like I can’t connect. I know you have never left me alone.

  43. GramsieSue . says:

Ladies, i am so blessed by all your comments. I am asking for prayers for my husband please. His anxiety and stress levels have increased to the point that he is physically ill. Simple tasks can cause extreme frustration. We own a business with 170 employees and the government mandates are throwing him over the edge. He takes magnesium calm, L-theanine, gaba…natural supplements for stress. But they do not seem to be helping. I’m so afraid he is leading up to a stroke. I know my medical issues in 2021 did not help this situation. Please pray. And have a blessed Sunday. ❤️

  44. SarahJoy says:

FOSTERMAMA – said a prayer for you and the young man you’re ministering to. May God pour out His love and comfort!

  45. SarahJoy says:

Thank you all for your prayers. Especially for the prayers for safety as my husband and his brother got stuck on I-35 at the Iowa/Missouri border and had to stay overnight at a hotel. Thank you, Jesus, for protecting them from a crash!
I got the opportunity to share Bret’s story with one of my friends who was hurt by the church years ago. I pray that I can continue to build a relationship with her that will give her the courage to try again.
This passage is so lovely. I confess I don’t always make an effort with the memorization, but the poetry of this section has me convinced I need to try. “In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God and the Word was God.” Plenty to meditate on there!!!

Enjoy your Sunday, She’s! Wherever and in whatever way you worship today.

  46. Ali Adair says:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Lord, please open my eyes to see the glory and beauty of Christ. Amen.

  47. Churchmouse says:

In the beginning, and throughout eternity, the Word will stand firm. He was there in creation and He will split the eastern sky upon His return. He sustains all of creation. He is sovereign. How majestic is our God! How personal He desires to be known by each of us. Open the Book. Read His love letters. Fall into His embrace.

  48. Cara P says:

    In the BEGINNING……say no more.

  49. Kelly (NEO) says:

    Haiku Sunday!

    Forever scared for my sin,
    Reign in my heart.
