The Pouring Out of God’s Spirit

Open Your Bible

Isaiah 32:14-18, Isaiah 44:3-4, Ezekiel 39:29, Joel 2:28-32, Acts 2:1-47

If you’re like me, you’re a little prone to, um, an overabundance of feelings at all times. But though the feelings you have are strong, sometimes they aren’t the right ones. Maybe you want to feel empathetic, but you feel defensive. You want to feel loving, but you feel selfish. You long to hunger for the Word of God, but the day was long, and you “accidentally” opened a different app like, say, TikTok. Ahem.

Sometimes we want to feel the right things but pursue them the wrong way. Second Corinthians 3:17 reminds us, “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” We want to want the Spirit, right? Of course. But how can we have the Spirit and feel the freedom He brings when life is so full of distractions and pains and questions that get us wanting other things we didn’t want to want in the first place? How can we be people who embody the Spirit who lives inside of us? In Acts 2, Peter quotes what was once spoken through the prophet Joel.

And it will be in the last days, says God,
that I will pour out my Spirit on all people;
then your sons and your daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
and your old men will dream dreams.

—Acts 2:17

Did you notice that it’s God who does the pouring out? It’s God who is the Spirit. God is, and God pours out. We, on the other hand, are to receive. But we’re not going to recognize what is available to us if we’re distracted, looking at Instagram or news updates more than we’re looking to God.

In Isaiah 32, we’re reminded of the glorious benefit of being filled with God’s Spirit: “The result of righteousness will be peace; the effect of righteousness will be quiet confidence forever” (v.17). We have the Spirit of God. We can be filled with the Spirit of God. We can have and experience His peace. We can live with “quiet confidence forever.” The Spirit who came upon the apostles “like that of a violent rushing wind” is available to all of us who follow Christ (Acts 2:2). We don’t have to conjure it up. We don’t have to strive forever for the feeling of Christlikeness. The Holy Spirit is being poured out. Open the Word. Obey its instruction. Focus on filling more than feeling, and remember this: the work of Jesus Christ has already made you pure. Your sins are already forgiven. You are loved. You are full of God’s power, God’s peace, God’s presence, God’s life, God’s hope. Wow.

  2. Kimberly Humphrey says:

It is mind blowing that we were reading just a couple days ago about the temple and where the presence of God resided and now we are where God resides. The Holy Spirit in us! I definitely have a tendency to be distracted or even oblivious of what God is going to…. Please Lord help me to be able to see your presence!

  3. Karen Wilson says:

Once we are saved and are truly a child of God, at that instance we are filled with all the Holy Spirit we will ever get. It’s what we do with that and how we allow the Holy Spirit to move in us that matters. We are fully filled at the time of Salvation! So thankful that my salvation is not up to me.

I think the following excerpt from today’s devotion would be a great daily affirmation! Thank you Jesus!
“. . . the work of Jesus Christ has already made you pure. Your sins are already forgiven. You are loved. You are full of God’s power, God’s peace, God’s presence, God’s life, God’s hope. Wow.”

  6. Sophia Ayres says:

Being filled by God’s presence versus feeling God’s presence is a principle I need to live by more, especially when I am reading hi word and praying.

I loved this devotional! I am such a feeler, and so often I feel like I need to conjure up these amazing feelings. I think that if I don’t feel like something is true, it isn’t. I love knowing that I don’t need to feel something for it to be true. I also love that it isn’t up to me to make myself feel something, I just need to receive from God. I make myself available to God’s spirit.

  13. Tricia C says:

Good afternoon She’s. I’m getting around for work and love sitting here in the quiet, reading The Word and then reading your hearts. The thing that always gets me in the Acts reading is how the people were a community and how they took care of each other. I do love how the Spirit filled each one of them and they couldn’t help but share the Good News with other people. Fill me with your spirit, Lord, so I am able to and want to share You with all who I come in contact.
I’m reading through your comments and request and praying as I go. Hugs to you and prayers for all on this Wednesday.❤️

Lifting up your individual prayers today!!!

  21. Sharon, Jersey Girl says:

“The work of Jesus Christ has already made you pure. Your sins are already forgiven. You are loved. You are full of God’s power, God’s peace, God’s presence, God’s life, God’s hope.” Yes and Amen! “Filling more than feeling” – so much needed in our lives and world today.

Interestingly enough I was listening to Francis Chan again this morning (I put him on when I’m at the gym) he had his wife come up and read aloud the entire chapter of Acts 2 that’s two times this week this devotional and his sermons have been on the same scripture! Whatever it is, God wants me to hear it twice!!

@Mia Faith – it’s so good to see you are back. I can’t imagine what you are going through but know that we all here are lifting you in prayer. May God continue to strengthen you and peace, quietness and confidence.

@Martha Hix – praying for your travels today!

    @Lynn from Alabama & @Linda in N.C. – praying for you both.

    @Michelle Patire – beautiful song!

  22. Jen B says:

Love filling more than feeling! It brought the song Fresh Wind to my mind:

    Spirit sound, rushing wind
    Fire of God fall within
    Holy Ghost
    Breathe on us, we pray
As we repent, turn from sin
    Revival embers smouldering
    Breath of God
    Fan us into flame
    We need a fresh wind
    The fragrance of Heaven
    Pour Your Spirit out
    Pour Your Spirit out
For hearts that burn with holy fear
    Purified in faith and deed
    Refiner’s fire
    Strengthen what remains
So we the church who bear Your light
    Lamp aflame, city bright
King and kingdom come is what we pray
Yeah, we need a fresh wind
    The fragrance of Heaven
    Pour Your Spirit out
    Pour Your Spirit out
    A holy anointing
    The power of Your presence
    Pour Your Spirit out
    Pour Your Spirit out
Pour Your Spirit out (pour Your Spirit out)
Pour Your Spirit out (pour Your Spirit out)
Pour Your Spirit out (pour Your Spirit out)
    Pour Your Spirit out
Pour Your Spirit out (pour Your Spirit out)
Pour Your Spirit out (pour Your Spirit out)
Pour Your Spirit out (pour Your Spirit out)
    Pour Your Spirit out
    Let all the redeemed
    Prophesy and sing
    We can hear the wind
    Blowing, blowing, blowing
    Move upon our praise
    Sons and daughters sing
    We can hear the wind
    Blowing, blowing, blowing
    Let all the redeemed (prophesy)
    Prophesy and sing
    We can hear the wind
Blowing, blowing (pour Your Spirit out), blowing
    Move upon our praise
    Sons and daughters sing
    We can hear the wind
    Blowing (blowing)
    We need a fresh wind
    The fragrance of Heaven
    Pour Your Spirit out
    Pour Your Spirit out
    A holy anointing
    The power of Your presence
    Pour Your Spirit out
    Pour Your Spirit out
    Pour Your Spirit out

Filling over feelings and God’s presence and filling of the Holy Spirit.

  25. Donna Wolcott says:

Praying for more “filling”, and not getting in the way! Asking the Lord that you also might experience this today and for your needs.

  26. Kris says:

So thankful for these promises of the desert places being lush with life and provision, streams of living water being poured out in the dry places. The promises of peace and quiet confidence. I envision a regal woman walking with her shoulders back, her head high. She is confident and at peace. She isn’t hurrying about, rushing to figure things out. She trusts. She’s disciplined. She makes good decisions because its right. She is at peace with her world. This is the woman I want to be. Obedient to God’s word, and therefore not anxious or worried. Confident in His care for me, therefore not flustered. Leaving a legacy of peace and confidence. I want people to say, “There goes Kris, a woman of peace and confidence because she trusts in her God”.

    1. Renee Parish says:

      Amen! Me too, Kris!

    2. Tricia C says:

      Amen Kris! Me too!❤️

  27. Cheryl Blow says:

”The fruit of that righteousness will be peace; its effect will be quietness and confidence forever.“
    ‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭32‬:‭17‬ ‭NIV‬‬
    https://bible.com/bible/111/isa.32.17.NIV

This verse really spoke to me! This is why we can live in this world and be free of worry and fear. We have the Holy Spirit with us to guide us. We something is robbing us of our peace, we need to talk to God about it. Give it to Him. He will answer us. Surround us with His love.

MIA FAITH – praying that you will be surrounded with God’s love and peace. Sending you hugs of comfort.

  28. Rhonda J. says:

@DEE DEE So grateful we could pray for you last night and continual prayers for answers and treatment!

Mia Faith- Continual prayers as you and your family walk through this valley, but so glad you are here with us. You are a woman of God and give us such an example of faith and strength!

  29. Mari V says:

Focus more of filling then feeling! WOW! Needed to hear that! MIA FAITH…..love you sweet girl. I think and pray for you often. Happy Wednesday sweet She’s.

  30. Rhonda J. says:

That was a good devotion Scarlet! Feelings! Yes, too many feelings, and oftentimes we fill ourselves up with social media to “lose ourselves” for awhile and look at other things and people’s lives, and then that just adds more feelings! lol. I don’t want all these feelings, they leave me tired. I love the tagline “filling over feelings,” YES, please!! But the RIGHT filling! Holy Spirit FILL me. I long for peace in my home. It has me up and down, and all over the place. While I should be living the dream, (I am!) I have a person that seems to be out of control with the attacks on him. Lord, fill him with your Spirit of peace. Make the devil flee, in Jesus name. I want for him to want you Lord, your Spirit to guide him in his emotions. It is exhausting Lord not living with your presence. You care about us Lord, you want us to dwell with you at all times. In the hum drum and in the busy, in the ups and downs, and the valleys and the mountains. In paradise, the dream.

I listened to a great message from Charles Stanley today of how we get in the way with the Lord’s working in other people. It was a good lesson today for the above comment in my house. I will try not to get in the way of what God is doing in my husband’s life. I can’t fix people, that is the Lord’s job, although I can be of help not hindrance. If you want to hear the message you go to his website, to radio message today.

    @Laura-so good, I’m with you!
    @Mercy-prayers
@She’s- pray as I come to your requests and comments, and for all of you silent as well.

  31. Ada McCloud says:

    You (we) are already forgiven!
    Amen

  32. Adrienne says:

    ❤️

  33. Laura Dianne says:

Feelings are funny things, aren’t they? I don’t think I am a very “feeling” type gal. I’m pretty cerebral when it comes to situations and actually, my hubby cries more easily than I do; sometimes I wish I could be more emotional like him. But being cerebral isn’t what God wants us to do either; that was the downfall of the Pharisees. I love the thought of being filled – where it is neither feelings or thinking – it is part of us. I want that. I need that. To have the Spirit be part of me and therefore I pursue righteousness because it is who I am through God’s Spirit. Wow.

MICHELLE PATIRE I purchased your song yesterday and listened to it on my walk – beautiful! Keep singing, sister! You have a fan club right here at SRT!

No longer bound by the chains of sin, Amen.

    Praying for the lost.
This passage from Peter’s speech – how many have this desire for redemption today?
    Acts 2:37-41 NKJV
37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”
38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”
40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation.” 41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.

BG’s verse today sums it up – 1 Corinthians 1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

  46. Bassy says:

It was the verse in Ezekiel 39 that had me, “I will no longer hide my face from them…”. God desires so much to be intimate with us and as it would seem, more than we do as we often get lost in the rabbit hole of sensationalism and feelings, instead of being open and present.

Thank you so much for this devotional, #FillingOverFeeling is my take away also.
