The God Who Forgives

Open Your Bible

Luke 23:32-43, Mark 15:33-36, Luke 23:46, Isaiah 50:7-10, Acts 7:54-60

Though Scripture contains many written prayers, like those found in the book of Psalms, and many teachings on how to pray, like the parables and sermons in Jesus’s ministry, this reading plan focuses on the prayers offered to God in the narratives of Scripture. Each day we’ll read a narrative that includes a prayer from an individual or group. Their prayers vary in length, type, posture, purpose, and God’s response. The secondary passages explore how the rest of Scripture speaks to the themes demonstrated in the main reading.

While each account is different, every prayer recorded in Scripture teaches us about the unchanging God who invites us to speak to and hear from Him. These prayers model for us what it can look like to be in conversation with God. As you read, notice the posture and emotions present each day.

Reading Scripture together is the centerpiece of what we do at She Reads Truth. As we spend time as a community reading Prayers in Scripture together, we encourage you to start by reading the daily Scripture on your own. Then join us here to engage and encourage one another as we respond to what we’ve read in the comments.

This Monday, we’ll start the week thanking God for His forgiveness. Share with others in the global community why you’re thankful for a God who forgives.

I am thankful for God because of my past, and my past includes this morning on my way to school with the kids…running late shoving them out the door but then realizing no, don’t start their day this way and rolling down the window and embarrassing them with I love yous and blowing kisses. I found joy in that moment, after a moment of ugly and yelling to get out the door. My heart today is to turn my thanks to God for everything…even just praising God for being the great I Am….so I am thankful he sees me and sees my heart and intervenes to soften my words and my mouth and my spirit. And that I can make any moment new in Him.

I’m thankful for a God who forgives, because otherwise I wouldn’t be able to be a part of His love and community. His forgiveness washes away all sins for his believers. His love and generosity of forgiveness allow for us to know what it means to be the best that we can in this life. It pushes us closer to Him and it keeps us in His light. So I’m thankful and grateful for such love that allow our Lord to forgive us.

  41. Kimberly Z says:

I am so thankful for a God who forgives. Yet sometimes I have a hard time forgiving others for things they’ve done to me even though God forgives me without any doubt. I struggle because I ask for forgiveness for things that I know I will probably do again . @Dorothy praying for your living situation to get better and also for your sister. It’s hard to watch loved ones make that decision.

  42. Michelle Baier says:

Whenever I get resentful at a person who has hurt me I have to pray for them. Who am I to not forgive someone after everything Jesus did so I could be forgiven. When we forgive it is so freeing and I regain my peace.

  43. Mercy says:

Forgiveness is such a hard thing to grant to the offender. Yet the Lord did it again and again for me. And when He asked me to forgive the individuals who hurt me, I tried to do it and it was so difficult that I broke down and cried, realizing what He went through for me. I asked Him to help me to forgive the pain that was brought to me unexpectedly. Slowly it happened and I was healed. The forgiveness of God through us to others can be a gift to them and to us (door to untold peace & mental well-being), and could only be achieved through our full surrendering to God and killing our flesh/silencing the retaliation and angry thoughts. Why? Our hearts must be kept pure, with all diligence. “Offenses will certainly come, but woe to the one they come through! (Luke 17:1). After so many heartaches, I need to remember NOT to pick up these offences as they come so I don’t have to do the hard long work of forgiving later. To take offence is to take up the woe onto ourselves (Beware!). To ignore offence and stay far from it is wisdom. Don’t pick up offences as they come, don’t even peek at it, they are designed to come. Let us understand the trap of the devil through offence. And on the flip side I am thankful for the beauty and hardship of the forgiveness of God. Be imitators of Him to extend forgiveness to our enemies, and render not evil for evil. True love will not keep track of the list of wrongdoings. Praising God for teaching us this gift through the example of Jesus & Stephen today. Be blessed dear sisters.

Sometimes it is unfathomable that the Holy Creator of the Universe could be bothered to even notice one plain, little person such as myself, and yet even more

I love those lines…. All to Him I owe!

  48. Charity McConnell-Edwards says:

I’m thankful for God’s forgiveness, it helps me forgive others to know I am forgiven. This keeps my heart and mind open to the will of God and not so focused on my own will because I’m hanging onto things that I shouldn’t.

  49. PamC says:

I’m reminded of the song Great is Thy Faithfulness. I sob through the Carrie Underwood-CeCe Winans version because it’s so incredibly beautiful. So many here said they were grateful for His mercy being new every morning. So often, that is the verse that tops my gratitude journal entry for the day. How could I ever get by without His faithfulness, forgiveness, patience when I’m so prone to run off? Be impatient? Headstrong & want my own way? Thank you Jesus!

  50. Audren Bruszer says:

    Oooh amen sister

  51. Cynthia Loves Jesus says:

I am thankful for the forgiveness Jesus extends to me in such abundance that I can not withhold it from those who hurt me. God provided such forgiveness for me to forgive my earthly father for abandoning our family when I was a young child. Three days before he passed the Lord gave me the opportunity to see him in person and extend forgiveness when I wanted to let him have it in my flesh. God is so good that the Holy Spirit held my tongue and made me speak love and forgiveness to a dying man who did not deserve it. I do not deserve such love and forgiveness either! Thank you, Gracious Heavenly Father, for your amazing love!♥️

  52. Audren Bruszer says:

I’m thankful for a God who forgives because that means I don’t have to stay being wrong honestly. I don’t have to have my wrongs be pinned against me for the rest of my life, or even the rest of the next hour. They are GONE. FORGOTTEN. Sin who? Don’t know her!

  53. Candy Michalski says:

I am so thankful that God is willing to have a relationship with me here on earth. Even though I fall far from being like him He still loves me, forgives me and makes this life here on earth less hellish with all the hate and unkindness in our world. A relationship with Him here on earth is a little piece of heaven. Thank you JESUS that I can always count on you and your love!

  54. Dorothy says:

I’m thankful for a Lord who forgives because I know I’m not perfect and at times I feel guilt for things that are out of my control.
Sisters please pray for me I moved back to my apartment and my sister is living by herself. My sister is an alcoholic and when I first moved in with her she hadn’t been drinking. Then a little over a week ago when my son and I were finishing up the moving — moving the rest of the small things, mainly boxes — my son went back to the new house to unload and put together a shed she had bought. He found her drunk, she had drunk a 750 ml bottle of vodka and her oxygen tubing out on the front porch. It had only been three hours since I had left her. I got home and took her to the hospital in hopes she would go to rehab. I told if she didn’t go to the hospital I wasn’t going to stay. We got to the hospital and we stayed maybe 30 or 45 minutes and she insisted on going home. I reminded her I wasn’t going to stay if I took her home she said she didn’t care she wanted go home. I took her home and got her settled in and took a few of my things and left. I love her dearly but I can’t deal with her drinking. Yes I know alcoholism is a disease, but I also know she has to want to be helped.
Be blessed and know you CAN ALWAYS, ALWAYS reach out to go sisters.

  55. Erica Chiarelli says:

I’m so thankful God forgives when I have made so many mistakes…messed up, sinned, missed the mark. Over & over. By mistake or on purpose. Realizing or not even realizing it. I am thankful He gives 2nd, 3rd, 10,304 chances! He loves us & knows we are human but does not leave us in this state! He gave us Jesus so we can confess our sins and be cleansed! We do not need to live in shame or condemnation! Hallelujah!

  59. Lorrie says:

I’m so very thankful for the forgiveness of Jesus, first in my own life. That the God of the universe sees me, wants me, went to extreme lengths to offer me forgiveness is both overwhelmingly humbling and brings deep joy and gratitude. It also brings me great hope for my adult prodigal children. They can never fall farther than His forgiveness can reach. Lord, please hasten the day that they turn to You as their Savior and Lord.

  60. Jeanie says:

This reading has caused me to think about my response when I have been wronged. It should automatically be forgiveness but so many times I respond as the servant did in Matthew 18. He was forgiven much but did not forgive the little owed him. God, help us to always keep in our mind and hearts your unending mercy. Help us to extend that mercy to others.

    1. Erica Chiarelli says:

@Jeanie amen!!! I was in my son’s PreK church class, & they taught about that and showing love. Even in there, it was convicting!

  63. Libby K says:

I was listening to a song this morning, singing along. The part of the song that gets me every time is “like a blessing buried in the broken pieces”. It’s the story of my life. I thought I was beyond ever being whole again…. But Jesus. Not only did He forgive me, but he pieced me back together with His love. He truly is the God of miracles.

  64. Laura Struyf says:

Lord, Your complete and constant forgiveness humbles me to my core! I have no words that are big enough or grand enough or powerful enough to convey how thankful I am for Your presence and Your forgiveness. Without Your forgiveness I would have no hope of any forgiveness, no hope of living a fruitful life, no hope of salvation, no hope of gaining heaven. NO hope. And so, with a humbled and contrite heart, I simply say thank You, thank You, thank You.

  65. Rebecca W says:

    Forgotten, forlorn, forsaken……Forgiven forever!
For God So Loved The World ❤️❤️❤️

  67. Melissa Brazier says:

The depth of His forgiveness is unbelievable. If we could mirror the same. Not enabling wrong or leaving it with no consequences but truly loving through it. We are all so undeserving. He is so very good.

  68. Katarina Friedman says:

I am so thankful for God’s forgiveness and never ending love. He loves me despite my shortcomings and mistakes. He sees me for who I am and loves every part of me. 71. Sharon, Jersey Girl says:

I am so thankful for the forgiveness of God. And so thankful that Jesus went to the cross for my sin. Without forgiveness I would be eternally lost. I can not even begin to fathom what Christ has saved me from – eternal punishment, hell, eternal suffering – I shudder to think of it. But God – His grace is sufficient, His mercy is more! So thankful for 1 John 1:9!! My constant prayer for my unsaved family, friends, neighbors and the world is Acts 26:18. May those who do not know the forgiveness of God, turn from darkness to light and come to Him today.

@thebestisyettocome – I’m right there praising the Lord with you!!

    Happy Monday sisters!

  72. Donna Wolcott says:

With a grateful heart, thank you Jesus for what you have done for me(us). Those two words, “thank you”, are just not BIG ENOUGH! Giving thanks for each one of you this week.

  73. Mari says:

Good morning sweet sisters! Happy Monday! I admit Mondays have never been my favorite, but here I am. I am thankful for a God who forgives because I don’t deserve it, yet HE does. Just before starting todays reading, I came before HIM asking HIM to forgive my shortcomings. Many times, I don’t like myself very much because I mess up all the time YET, my God, my Jesus is quick to forgive me when I don’t deserve it and compare myself to others who are SO sweet, and I want to be like them when in reality I should be MORE like Jesus.

  74. Ruby Hunter says:

Like the robbers who were crucified with Jesus, I deserve nothing else but death. My blackened heart is full of sin. But, because of God’s gracious act of mercy to send his son to die on the cross (and rise again) I have eternal life in him! That is much to be thankful for!

  77. Kathy says:

God’s forgiveness…I am struggling to find words. The picture painted in today’s reading showing the thief on the cross who had done zero good in his life, receiving forgiveness. I am speechless at God’s mercy. Where would I be without His forgiveness? I would be hopeless and without God. BUT GOD has forgiven me. His forgiveness is a gift freely given. So much of my time, too much of my time is spent feeling like I am not enough. But like the thief on the cross, I place myself in God’s hands because He is enough.

  78. Karen Y says:

At the time of death Jesus prayed, “Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit.” Stephen also prayed, “Jesus, receive my spirit.” God forgives us from our sins and forgives us to eternal life with Him. What a generous gift.

I’m thankful but intimidated by these accounts in Scripture. Where Jesus and Stephen freely forgave those who were physically and emotionally abusing them. It amazes me that they had such love in their hearts even in their worst moments on Earth. I can’t say that I would have the same reaction. Just another revelation that I need to grow so much in the love of God.

  86. Erica Wilson says:

Jesus not only did what seems impossible by forgiving us of his death, he showed us that we can forgive too. Unforgiveness crushes our soul, yet he taught us a more excellent way. 91. Felicia P says:

I am thankful for redeeming me from a sin and death. I am thankful for his grace and blessings.

  92. Angie Mills says:

I am thankful for forgiveness because facing God’s wrath is unimaginable. Jesus experienced His Father’s wrath and abandonment as He died on the cross so I do not have to.

As He was dying, one of the thieves being crucified along with Him cried out for Jesus to remember him when Jesus came into His kingdom. Jesus replied that that day he would be with Him in Paradise. I am thankful that because of God’s forgiveness I can dwell with Him forever and He is always with me.

Jesus satisfied God’s justice and displayed God’s mercy. Now, when I go to God confessing my sin and unrighteousness, I am forgiven and given Christ’s righteousness.

  93. Julie Cooper says:

Thank you Lord for forgiveness. If Jesus and Stephen could forgive while still being tormented, who am I to withhold forgiveness from anyone? Help me to be like you Jesus.

  94. Aimee D-R says:

I can’t imagine the weight of this world and my sin without the Grace and Mercy Jesus gave us through His blood. Thank You Lord Jesus!

  97. Kelsey Thurman says:

I’m thankful for forgiveness because, like Karen said, carrying the weight of what I’ve done wrong or where I’ve simply missed the mark, can be crushing. I need forgiveness and the assurance of new mercies each morning.

It was cancelled for today – hallelujah, thank you Jesus!!

  99. TIna says:

There are so many sinful things I would love to correct/change… so many words.. so many action..

  108. Mindy Shiffert says:

This is everything I needed to read this morning

  109. Kristen says:

I’m so thankful for forgiveness. If Jesus would not have endured all that He did, we would never have hope to be saved for time and eternity. The betrayal, abandonment, the false accusations, the lies, the phony trial, the scourging, being beaten beyond recognition, the mocking, the spitting, the torture wasn’t the worst parts. He drank the full cup of God’s wrath! This is unfathomable! I don’t understand what He endured to make a way. Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sins! May we all be overwhelmed by Jesus! May I been convicted to repent quickly and often and May and never take the ability to do this for granted. May God please help me to do more what is pleasing to Him! Amen @Karen Roper, I agree! Guilt is awful! Praise God that we don’t have to live with guilt, shame or condemnation! I can’t say that this is a priceless gift, because an unimaginable price was paid! Glory to our God and Savior!
