Consciously or not, we move through life with guidelines about how to be in the world. Spend enough time in a family’s home, and you get a sense of what matters to them. Move to a new country (or even a new state), and you’ll pick up on local values. Whether you bristle a bit at rules or desperately want to know them, they are essential to defining a culture.
It’s the same with God’s kingdom. Long before Jesus’s birth and life on earth, the first foundation of God’s cultural expectations were laid by stone tablets on a wilderness mountain.
The Ten Commandments are God’s law in broad strokes, less about punitive rules and more about the ways of relating to God and each other. Then comes the rest of the Law (or Torah), which might feel strange to the modern, Western perspective. Many Christians even say it doesn’t matter because Jesus released us from all that, right? Mix fabrics all you want! Eat some bacon! Why are there so many rules? Who could keep them all anyway?
And yet, Jesus also said, “Don’t think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to abolish but to fulfill” (Matthew 5:17). As a rabbi, living according to the law and teaching his disciples the same was essential to His religion. Even when He expanded, clarified, or outright contradicted everything people thought—“You heard it said, but I say to you”—He never lost His deep respect for this part of His community’s story.
So what if the law never was about arbitrary rules? When Moses and his band of wanderers came out of Egypt, they were taught to “listen to the statutes and ordinances….Carefully follow them, for this will show your wisdom and understanding in the eyes of the peoples” (Deuteronomy 4:1,6). The law was not just a bunch of rules to make life harder. It was God’s way of showing His people and all their neighbors what He values. They’re like “house rules” for God’s family, all about honoring one God, taking a Sabbath rest, and treating their neighbors with dignity and respect.
During Advent, we reflect on how Jesus came to inaugurate a new kingdom, one not bound by tribal affiliation. This new kingdom needed a new relationship to the law. Jesus didn’t throw out what God began centuries before, but instead honored, challenged, and expanded on it. And even today, when we find ourselves struggling to live out kingdom values, we can trust the Holy Spirit to help us. After all, “there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus, because the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death” (Romans 8:1–2).
The law was given to show what it’s like when people walk with God, but Jesus shows us what happens when God walks among us. And with His Spirit, we can keep walking together until He comes to walk with us again.

I don’t typically talk about the Ten Commandments in our home with the kids, but this reading gave new light as to why I should. Of course we talk about you don’t kill… xyz, but never the story behind them and what all ten are.
Same, but I’m changing that moving forward and will share the story with them!
❤️
So good. ❤️

I have heard messages suggesting to not stress the law because we live by grace now, but I agree with this perspective more. The law still holds value even now because it shows the culture of true Christianity, what people would look like if they lived like Jesus, and it acts as a reminder that Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment! <3
May I walk humbly with The spirit until God comes again to walk with me to Heaven.
✨
Walking together. Amen.
Wow! What sobering thought that we, mere humans could never obey the law God gave but He sent His son to show us…. Through Him we can!
If we did open the law, then we would be perfect
Amen

I’m struggling with people and politicians who are weaponizing the 10 Commandments. I look at the 10 Commandments and see the greatest command from the Gospels “you shall love the Lord your God with all of your heart, soul, mind, and strength. And love your neighbor as yourself.” We need to be better humans and Christians.
This came to mind for me this morning too. I’m thankful to know that Jesus has a plan, even if we don’t see it perfectly right now and I hope He uses me somehow in my neighbors life.
❤️
I love the idea that the Law still matters, it just needs to be looked at from a different perspective on this side of the resurrection. Jesus didn’t come to abolish all that His Father established; He came to fulfill it!
❤️
I’m catching up after a quick trip to Leavenworth WA. It was so nice. I met 3 women from Idaho that let me know right away that they are believers. lol They were just setting things straight from the get go. The were very nice ladies.
Knowing how you struggle with the opposite situation arkund your tkwn, Traci, I am so happy you had that encouragement!

many many prayers.
“Jesus shows us what happens when God walks among us.” – Love the way she described this!
I love how Jen Yokel likened the law to “house rules.” It’s a concept we can all relate to. I’m so glad that I don’t have to be perfect to be accepted by God. I pray that I would rely on his spirit to be the woman he has called me to be.
It’s good to see you commented regularly again!
I learned the SOS acronym to remember that the Law Shows Our Sins and the Gospel Shows Our Savior. How amazing that Jesus came to perfectly do what no human could-to perfectly fulfill the law and bring us the Gospel!
Love this explanation, thanks for sharing and thank you Jesus for what you did!❤️
❤️
Why did God give a list of commands that He knew no one could perfectly obey? He did it to show the Israelite’s that they needed God because this list was impossible to keep, and to show us a need for a Savior.
.
All of us have one way or another broken every commandment that God gave. The only One to perfectly obey them was Jesus Christ.
.
It is to Him we look for forgiveness, salvation, and power to keep walking in His ways.
.
If the Law had never been given, we’d never know how much we needed a Savior.
.
I love how Jen put it when she said, “The law was given to show what it’s like when people walk with God, but Jesus shows us what happens when God walks among us.”
.
“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.” HALLELUJAH! Amen & Amen!

I missed yesterday’s readings and comments but will catch up tomorrow.
Praying for your requests!
Amen! I’ve missed 3 days of readings and trying top catch up now. I notice that I feel I miss out when I do this. We were traveling though.
Beautifully said, Sharon! ❤
Our very good God provided the Law for many reasons, one being to once again bring order to chaos. The people had been living under the rule and influence of a pagan society for hundreds of years. He brought them out of that and gave them the Law to provide them a way to live that would “show your wisdom and understanding in the eyes of the peoples”. He was establishing a Nation and that Nation was to represent him to everyone in how they lived.
When Jesus came to earth it was, again, for multiple reasons, but one was for the people to experience the physical, real, living, breathing, crying, laughing, sleepy, hungry, human existence of God himself–right smack in their presence. He told people to “come and see”. The Christian experience is just that–something to be EXPERIENCED. He gave a new commandment: that we should love our God with every single part of our being. Our thoughts, emotions, physical actions, our devotion. Then, love those around us in a way that inadvertently causes them to EXPERIENCE God for themselves. They may not have the vocabulary to recognize that is what they are doing, but we then have an open opportunity to share his love and truth. They get to SEE it, FEEL it. He fulfilled the old laws and left us with a new one that encompasses the purpose of the old ones–to live a life in a way that shows the existence of him to others. We get to exemplify a life lived in and for HIS kingdom, not our own, regardless of where in the world that may be. I really do want all that I do and say and show to be representative of the true, eternal, holy kingdom I belong to.
Very well said Heidi! ❤️

“The law was given to show what it’s like when people walk with God, but Jesus shows us what happens when God walks among us.”
Jesus came not to abolish the law but to fulfill it. To expand clarify and show the people what God values. Jesus walking among us was a living breathing loving example of God’s values.. and he did it perfectly. It should become second nature for us to follow. I love Jen Yokel’s insightfully comparing it to our own house rules because we all have them..even when they are largely subconscious. Our youngest daughter surprised us one evening by sayin (to her brother) “To whom much is given ..much will be required “. While I don’t remember pushing this idea on our children.. She had internalized it as our family creed.
Love that, Cindy! Like the old saying goes, “Little pitchers have big ears!” They are paying attention even when we think they aren’t! ❤
Thank you Indiana Elaine, Grammie D, and Cee Gee for your kind words and encouragement yesterday. I don’t know how you guys leave hearts, it never works for me, but “heart” :)
So glad you were encouraged, Kristy; thank you for the ‘heart’!❤❤❤

hi. does this mean we cant or shouldn’t eat bacon?
Natalie in answer to your question I found this explanation after a little “digging deeper” –
Christians are no longer under the Mosaic Law. The apostle put it plainly:
“The Law has become our tutor leading to Christ, that we might be declared righteous due to faith. But now that the faith has arrived, we are no longer under a tutor.”-Galatians 3:24, 25 (NWT)
.
Also see: Mark 7:18-19; Acts 10:15

Hope this helps!
It IS a known carcinogen… so there’s that. Hahahahaha! ❤️
Ha, ha. This made me chuckle :)
Natalie, this may help (from gotquestions dot org:
“… the Law, including the prohibition against eating pork, stood as a unique sign of the privilege granted to Israel, setting them apart from their pagan neighbors.
The whole world in Moses’ time was idolatrous, with each nation believing in many deities.
The forbidding of eating certain foods such as pork distinguished between what would later be termed “Jew” and “Gentile.”
The dietary restrictions further indicated that Israel was a separate nation and a chosen people. Saying “no” to eating pork and other practices of the pagans helped the Israelites to break free from idolatry — a sin they assuredly struggled with (see Exodus 32).”
So, it was part of yhe Mosaic law, but Christians today are allowed to eat anny food as long as it doesn’t cause someone else to stumble in their faith (in other words, if they don’t eat certain foods then we should abstain in front of them). ❤
So thankful for Jesus’s first coming and that he showed us the way but not only that, for BEING the way the truth and the life! Lord, please help us to abide in you while we wait for you to come again.
{As so often happens…I’m behind in reading but, am popping in to say hello and try to see some comments!}
UPDATE at our end…2 families are being interviewed / assessed to adopt our foster son and his sister (and perhaps another sibling). Both are financially stable and say they are ready for all the complexities of adopting foster kids (with lots of people attached)….VERY hard to find!!!
There is one family everyone is leaning towards and I, of course, asked about faith…They were reportedly born Christians but it sounds like they don’t really practice BUT said they would “go to church for the kids” and such. PLEASE PRAY!!
(And feel free to remind me that, if they are God’s will for these kids, that my Jesus will find a way to hold onto my boy’s heart and life…and that I need to keep praying and surrender.)
Perhaps…”a child will lead them…”
Love and prayers for each of you ♥️
It must be so hard to have to “let go” of your little ones, and especially as your desire for them is to be placed in a Christian home. But, as you asked for a reminder – God sees and knows the whole situation and He loves these kids more than you or any adoptive parent ever could, He’s got this. Will be praying with you for God’s perfect placement. ❤️
♥️
Praying for all of you during this time. God knows. ❤️

Warren Wiersbe notes on Deuteronomy 4:1-2 –
“Hearing God’s Word is a matter of focusing our whole being—mind, heart, and will—on the Lord, receiving what He says to us, and obeying it. The Word of God must penetrate our heart and become a part of our inner being if it is to change our lives. That’s what Jesus meant when He said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!” (Matt. 11:15). That statement is found at least eight times in the Gospels, so it must be important. (See also Deut. 29:4 and Ezek. 12:2.)
How can believing parents best influence their children to trust the Lord and live by His wisdom? Moses gives the adults three suggestions:
(1) Be examples to your children;
(2) don’t let God’s Word slip from your minds and hearts; and
(3) remember what the Lord has done for you in the past and share these experiences with your children.”
✨
John MacArthur notes in on Matthew 5:18-
“fulfill. This speaks of fulfillment in the same sense that prophecy is fulfilled. Christ was indicating that He is the fulfillment of the law in all its aspects. He fulfilled the moral law by keeping it perfectly. He fulfilled the ceremonial law by being the embodiment of everything the law’s types and symbols pointed to. And He fulfilled the judicial law by personifying God’s perfect justice (cf. 12:18, 20).”
✨
From HRT:
“The old covenant of the law brought death. But now, through His sacrificial death and glorious resurrection, Christ has ushered in the new covenant—an era of eternal life in Him! Now, we keep God’s law not as a means to salvation, but out of great love, obedience, and praise to the One who saved us as we are led by His Spirit (Romans 8:4).
This Advent, let’s celebrate not only God’s good laws but the perfect law-keeper— His Son, Jesus Christ!
Written by Josh Cooley”
✨
No condemnation! Romans 8:1!
I love the NLT version of Romans 8:3-4 –
3 The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins.
4 He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us, who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit.

SONG SHARE:
Whiter Than Snow (hymn)
Lord Jesus, I long to be perfectly whole;
I want Thee forever to live in my soul,
Break down every idol, cast out every foe;
Now wash me and I shall be whiter than snow.
Refrain:
Whiter than snow, yes, whiter than snow,
Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
2 Lord Jesus, look down from Thy throne in the skies,
And help me to make a complete sacrifice;
I give up myself, and whatever I know,
Now wash me and I shall be whiter than snow. [Refrain]
3 Lord Jesus, for this I most humbly entreat,
I wait, blessed Lord, at Thy crucified feet;
By faith, for my cleansing I see Thy blood flow,
Now wash me and I shall be whiter than snow. [Refrain]
4 Lord Jesus, Thou seeest I patiently wait,
Come now, and within me a new heart create;
To those who have sought Thee, Thou never saidst “No,”
Now wash me and I shall be whiter than snow. [Refrain]

….until He comes to walk with us again. Oh….I long for that day. Happy Friday sweet She’s.
Observation: I think the law was necessary. It taught the Israelites how to be humans. It’s intent was NEVER to save anyone but it served a purpose.
Noah’ s society was lawless before the flood.
In the book of Judges even after the law was given, ” everyone did was right in their own eyes.”
Even though some of the laws do not make sense in the 21st century, they set the Israelites apart from the surrounding nations who were raping, sacrificing to idols, having sexual relations with brothers, sisters, mothers, daughters. The law of Moses prohibited these practices!
A good example is in the Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy 21:10- 14.
When the Israelites went to war, they were were instructed not to just rape the women. If they saw a beautiful woman they wanted, there was a very humanitarian way to go about marrying her.
There are 613 laws not just the 10 commandments. Sadly the religious leaders made keeping the law a religious olympics and source of pride.
Jesus came to fulfill the law:to restore the connection between God and man and empower us to be what God intended us to be. Humans, a little lower than the angels.
There were laws against ingesting blood and drinking blood. I personally believe this was a foreshadowing for the sanctity of the blood of Christ.
Jesus restores our humanity!
I have a co-worker and she has little children. Sometimes I say, ” How are the little Smiths?
She says,” Struggling and stil trying to learn to be human.”
Jesus thank you for your Holy Spirit who helps us in our struggles to be human.
❤️
❤️
Thank you Jesus for fulfilling the Law. ❤️

This stood out to me today- Deuteronomy 6 Carefully follow them, for this will show your wisdom and understanding in the eyes of the peoples. When they hear about all these statutes, they will say, ‘This great nation is indeed a wise and understanding people.’ 7 For what great nation is there that has a god near to it as the Lord our God is to us whenever we call to him?p 8 And what great nation has righteous statutes and ordinances like this entire law I set before you today?
It’s actually beautiful isn’t. Think of today, how awful and sinful our nation is, down to cities, and even our neighborhoods. Geez, even our own families! lol. YET God wanted to set his people a part so others “WOULD SEE” how they were different. How they succeeded and had something unique and special!! That is what we are supposed to be as Christ-followers! Showing God’s beauty through our lives. Dealing with problems differently. Showing love to all those around us. Putting them ahead of our selves. We wouldn’t have any murders or evil. Of course he knew we couldn’t possibly uphold it perfectly and the need for a Savior!!! But— we do have Jesus now, and no, we can’t have perfection still, but we can live in his truth and obedience…loving him with all our hearts, souls and minds. And it will reflect him in our lives, and should set us apart!! When we have Jesus, we have it all. The song by Ben Fuller says so! “Someday, that trumpet gonna sound”..and then indeed, we will have everything promised that this fallen world does not. But until then, we follow in obedience, not to earn, but because of his great love that overflows in our lives, the fruit we bear!!
Oh the peace that comes, the Hope that it is finished. He came and did what was foretold, the work was finished at the cross. But he came as a babe in a manger to first fulfill the law! Thank you my Jesus!
❤

Amen!
Amen❤️
Reading Romans 8:1-4 made me think about John 8:1-11 showing God’s grace to us
Love the correlation of God’s law is how God’s people walk, and Jesus is God walking among His people. I can’t help to think about the Garden, before the fall, God walking with Adam and Eve, and then Jesus walking with the disciples. Oh, She’s! We get that in heaven one day!
Amen and amen!
The Law was put in place (in part) to show people that they could never measure up to God’s impossible standard, and how incredible it is that he would send Jesus Christ – the perfect, flawless, sacrificial lamb – to uphold and fulfill the law perfectly and die in our place. Such freedom we have in Christ!
Galatians 3:11: Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God, because “the righteous will live by faith.”
I remember one of my Bible professors reframing the idea I had of the Ten Commandments. He said that God does not give us rules to harm us or keep us in a box, but rather He gives them to us to protect us. At the end of the day, when we commit sin, it hurts us and God! These guidelines help protect us although they can be difficult to uphold all the time.
Good morning, She’s! There is so much to dwell on today, I really like how my pastor often reminds us “Love God, love people.” as I was reading through each passage today Deuteromony 4:2 You must not add anything to what I command you or take anything away from it, so that you may keep the commands of the Lord your God I am giving you and the echo in Revelation 22:18-19 I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book.” The simplicity of the gospel, “Christ in us the hope of glory” So rich, so joyful to celebrate His first coming, fulfilling the prophecies of old and yet, is to come again! One day we will see by sight what we believe by faith, what a glorious day that will be! Lord, help me to keep it simple, true to Your word, let me not add or take away! Thank you for the season of great joy!
❤️
❤ Danny Gokey has a song titled Love God and Love People!
It’s a posture of the heart. What’s the intent or motive behind your actions rather than following rules. If your heart is set on Christ than the “rules” set in place by God should be easier to abide by.
Amen
Whew. Reading through the 10 commandments was tough. We just finished a study at church on Exodus and spent 10 weeks on the commandments, including unrecognized ways we break them in today’s world. The verses that followed – don’t add or take away from what God commanded, the questions reminding of the value of God’s guidance on the nation itself and the caution to remember God’s words and teach them to future generations.
Wow, hasn’t the world failed here?!
All nations are facing the consequences of squandered opportunities to follow the Lord. What can we do about this? Are we individually living a life of obedience and sharing God’s truth with the lost as we seek to rebuild each of our nations to be God loving, God fearing and God following, one soul at a time?

CEE GEE ❤️ The Lamb chose us!!! Me! You! All the sisters! Hallelujah! And good observation! His life here began in humility and ended that way as well.
TRICIA C ❤️ I have asked that same question, at what point in His life did Jesus know what He would do for us? My guess is God revealed His plan as Jesus matured from a human standpoint (and/or Jesus began remembering what He fully knew before He left heaven). ¯\_( )_/¯

“Just make sure you stay alert. Keep close watch over yourselves. Don’t forget anything of what you’ve seen. Don’t let your heart wander off. Stay vigilant as long as you live. Teach what you’ve seen and heard to your children and grandchildren.”
Deuteronomy 4:9 MSG
https://bible.com/bible/97/deu.4.9.MSG
Deut 4:9 is what grabbed my attention this morning. Christmas offers so many opportunities for us to pass on to our children not only what we know to be truth but what we have ourselves experienced. The reason for the season alone teaches them but beyond that the increased time together in celebration provides time and opportunity to share truth from our own experiences that is so relatable to them.
Lord help me to recognize and use the opportunities for story sharing this Christmas to share with my children. Help them to see the relationship not only the rules and that rightness flows from You and not from us.
This verse challenged me, too. I want to share it with my grandchildren, too!
God’s Word is not a book of “don’t do,” it’s a book of “look at what He will do for me!”

Amen!
The people knew how to live by rules – or lots of laws. God was speaking in a way they were familiar with. He met them where they were. And then paved a way to be saved from the restrictions of that
The Law was for people who had never really been a people – they had been slaves with a shared heritage. He really wanted heart change but knew that couldn’t come about by the Law but it showed our need for a Savior. We can’t change on our own, or change our heart on our own. We can’t get to God on our own. Thank God for Jesus!
Amen❤️

Joyful beyond description ❣️
She is better, thanks for remembering her! She still has to go to the hospital for fluids a couple more days and the kidney infection should be gone! This is all even possible because the judge was gracious enough to look over the “mistake” and give her another chance. She surprised us as church and slid in beside us with her little 3yr old daughter! It was a prayer answered prayed months ago there in jail!! Pray her faith continues to increase and strength to rid of strongholds.

“The law was not just a bunch of rules to make life harder. It was God’s way of showing His people and all their neighbors what He values.” I like this perspective – not one I’ve considered in the past.
Can we imagine how different our world would be if we all loved and valued the things God loves and values!!
Blessings on your Friday, Ladies.
Agreed!
Amen. I think im fairly good at sticking to the rules. I definately dont murder or commit adultury. Putting things above Jesus, yes sometimes ans even coveting my neighbours ox. Or in my case, their shiny new car. Lord I pray that I remember the true meaning of Christmas, stick to the rules you have given me and enjoy the freedom in the safety of living a life with Juesus at the helm!
Jessica – Candace Cameron Bure uses the 10 commandments as a witnessing tool and goes on to show how we all break everyone of the commandments, it a pretty cool way to share the gospel!
I find it helpful to write my prayers after these reflections.
Dear Jesus,
I thank you that there is now no condemnation for those of us that are in you. You became a sin offering for humanity when you came to earth as a man and took up the cross. You fulfilled the law that we could never keep. Because of this, You set us free! Surely nothing is better than living for you. Help us to live according to the Spirit and not the flesh; please show me in my day today what that means. In Jesus’s name,
Amen
Beautiful, Mary! Thank you for sharing! ❤
