What does it mean to be anointed? Growing up, I mostly heard it used in a metaphorical sense, like when you want to describe a particularly beautiful solo of a hymn that’s a little too high for most of us. (“Did you hear her sing? Wow, she’s anointed!”) And then there are people in many Christian traditions who wouldn’t think twice about dabbing a little olive oil on someone as they pray as a physical, tactile practice of symbolic weight. But as we see in today’s readings, anointing carries a rich tradition behind it. Throughout Scripture it’s a tangible way to set someone or something apart for a holy purpose.
From our perspective, this story of Mary anointing Jesus feels like a story about extravagant, impractical worship. “Then Mary took a pound of perfume, pure and expensive nard, anointed Jesus’s feet, and wiped his feet with her hair. So the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume” (John 12:3). Judas griped about this foolish woman’s wastefulness. Jesus came to her defense, honoring her actions as beautiful.
I know for most of my life, I thought the lesson I should get from this story was, “Look at how freely Mary gives her worship! You should do that too!” But if I’m honest, there’s a little bit of my reserved, practical self that wonders if maybe Judas has a point. Dig a little deeper, and questions start to surface. Why perfume? Why all of it, and not just a tasteful dab? Everything about this moment feels so lavish and impractical, and if I were in Mary’s shoes, I know I’d feel ashamed for being so extra.
Thankfully, Jesus didn’t see it that way at all. He saw how Mary overflowed with gratitude to her teacher, her friend, the healer who elevated her at every turn and raised her beloved brother from death. Her response echoed the work of her ancestors, who lavished their most expensive fragrant oils on priests and instruments and altars (Exodus 30:23–33). In her world, this kind of anointing was kept for only the most sacred tasks. What could be more sacred than the anointing Jesus carried: “…to bring good news to the poor…to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives…to give them…festive oil instead of mourning” (Isaiah 61:1–3)?
“Leave her alone,” the Anointed One admonished Judas as the perfume dripped from Him. “She has kept it for the day of my burial” (John 12:7). In this moment, while the plot to kill him built to a crescendo and before He had ridden into Jerusalem on a humble donkey to walk toward His destiny in Jerusalem, perhaps the gift of Mary’s anointing was the scent of courage.

Thank you for that perspective
Mercy, what beautifully written thoughts that I am grateful to have read! Amen! And to the song – I am now remembering the Veggie Tales version my oldest children listened to. Thank you for this reminder. Have a wonderful day She’s! Although I am quite a bit behind.
❤️✝️
Amen. I just sit here in awe. To think He knew he was walking into his burial for US. To save US. Almighty King, Hosannah…. My light. The light. Thank you Jesus for your unconditional love, patience and abundance of grace as I stumble each day trying to be my best and a light for others.
Kelly (Neo) That comment from the Pharisees to each other about “You see? You’ve accomplished nothing. Look, the whole world has gone after him!” Had me puzzled. I found the cry of your heart to be counted as one of those who wholeheartedly goes after Jesus helpful.
❤️
Happy Friday shes. What stood out to me was the oil. God commanded the anointing oil from specific spices mixed with olive oil to be used to anoint the Tent of Meeting, the Ark, the altar, and all the utensils of worship, and also to anoint Aaron and his sons as priests. In the New Covenant, God no longer dwells in a tent made with hands, He dwells in His people through the Holy Spirit. He dwells in us. Praise God. “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?” 1 Corinthians 3:16. “In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for special purposes and some for common use. Those who cleanse themselves from what is dishonorable will be instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work” 2 Timothy 2:20–21. Just as the oil sanctified the tent and the utensils, the Holy Spirit sanctifies us, vessels for holy use, set apart to carry His presence. I am again brought back to the oil in the lamps of the ten virgins. I love this parable so much. The ten virgins are waiting for the bridegroom (Christ). All have lamps, all appear ready, but only five are wise because they brought extra oil to keep their lamps burning when the bridegroom delayed. Oil symbolizes the Holy Spirit’s presence, anointing, and sanctifying power. The oil refers to something spiritual, not physical. While all ten virgins looked similar outwardly (they had lamps, they were waiting), only those who maintained their inner oil were ready when the bridegroom came. External religion (lamps, forms, appearances) isn’t enough. What matters is the inner life of the Spirit, the intimacy, the holiness and faith. When the foolish virgins’ oil ran out, they discovered that borrowed oil doesn’t work. You can’t depend on someone else’s relationship with God! The life of the Spirit cannot be transferred. It’s personal and cultivated through your own walk with God. Can this oil be bought? “Go and buy for yourselves”, seems like a contradiction? Can one buy the Holy Spirit? No, salvation and the Spirit’s indwelling are a gift of grace. But the parable uses the image of “buying” to show that maintaining intimacy with God costs us something, a personal price of devotion, time, and surrender. We don’t earn the oil, but we invest ourselves in what keeps it flowing. The Spirit is given freely (John 3:34: “For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit”). His fullness and continual presence are sustained through a life of devotion, obedience, and spiritual discipline. We “buy” the oil by spending time in God’s Word and presence, walking in purity (virgin) and repentance, choosing obedience when it costs comfort, guarding our heart from worldly distractions (wisdom). The priests in the Old Testament kept the lampstand burning continually (Exodus 27:20–21), we’re called to keep the fire of the Spirit burning through our daily lives. Notice what Jesus said to the foolish virgins after they were shut out: “Truly, I tell you, I do not know you” Matthew 25:12. The oil is maintained by intimacy, through knowing. Intimacy can keep the flame of love and faith alive even when the night is long. This is not something you can borrow.
.
May I join you in contributing one of my favorite hymns (good for both kids and adults lol)

give me oil in my lamp, I pray.
Give me oil in my lamp; keep me burning;
keep me burning till the break of day.

sing hosanna to the King of kings;
sing hosanna, sing hosanna,

Be blessed dear sisters.
Wow, I feel like I went to church in that reading!! It feels like a jail lesson!! I would have to read your comment!! I have added so many “lesson plans” from this study! It would be cool to show the matching snippets from the chosen…(thinking emoji!)
And songs to go with the lesson! Always a plus! This one and the Albastor box.
I had forgotten all about that song I sang as a child! Thanks for the reminder. I love it, and now I’m singing it in my heart!
Give me oil in my lamp!
“Intimacy can keep the flame of love and faith alive even when the night is long.” Beautiful, Mercy!
.
Thank you for sharing that sweet song; I had never heard it before! ❤
That is so very good!
Mercy – This is beautiful
Oh, I learned this song as a child! We nee
I love the way todays readings connects the passages in scripture. These are not parallels that I can seem to make on my own. These days I really struggle with focus, understanding what I read, clarity of thought, comprehension, thought retention and remembering, so appreciate it all the more as well as the thoughful insights you all bring each day.
When I think of Mary in these verses, I just think of her deep adoration, her respect and her humble but extravagant gift she gave Jesus by anointing His feet. Its from a devoted heart. What beautiful qualities and heart attitude to have towards our Savior. May these be so in my life as I walk with Jesus and wholeheartedly desire to serve, honor, glorify and give Him the praise He is due. ❤️
You, my sister post some of the most clear and well-constructed comments on here! I always look forward to them! ❤
That is so very kind of you to say, CeeGee and almost moves me to tears. If you only knew how long it takes me to get those thoughts together and well articulated to share them….ugh. If they are indeed clear and well-constructed and make sense, that is the Lord’s doing because they are very jumbled and disjointed in my head.
Love you and your heart for that determination, sister! It is not in vain! Love you! ❤
So many good comments. Helped me see things I might have missed.
❤️
John MacArthur Study Bible notes help my brain organize what we have been reading. Hope it is helpful to you for review or further research:
“The resurrection of Lazarus is the climactic and most dramatic sign in this gospel, and the capstone of His public ministry.
Six miracles have already been presented –
(water into wine [2:1–11];
healing of the nobleman’s son [4:46–54];
restoring the impotent man [5:1–15];
multiplying the loaves and fishes [6:1–14];
walking on the water [6:15–21];
and curing the man born blind [9:1–12]).
Lazarus’ resurrection is more potent than all those and even more monumental than the raising of the widow’s son in Nain (Luke 7:11–16) or Jairus’ daughter (Luke 8:40–56) because those two resurrections occurred immediately after death.
Lazarus was raised after 4 days of being in the grave with the process of decomposition already having started (v. 39).
Bethany. This Bethany is different from the other “Bethany beyond the Jordan” in 1:28 (see note there). It lies on the E side of the Mt. of Olives about two mi. from Jerusalem (v. 18) along the road leading toward Jericho.
Mary . . . Martha. This is the first mention of this family in John.
John related the story of Mary’s anointing of Jesus in 12:1–8, but this reference may indicate that the original readers were already familiar with the event. Cf. Luke 10:38–42.”
.
.
Luke 10:42 There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”
John !MacArthur identifies this “one thing” this way:
“The one thing necessary was exemplified by Mary, i.e.,
an attitude of worship and meditation,
listening with an open mind and heart to Jesus’ words.”
.
May this “one thing” ring true in our hearts as we reflect on the studies of this week. Mary’s generous act revealed her heart of worship, her belief in Jesus as the Son of God. I don’t belittle Martha’s offering-a great feast- as she, too, recognized Jesus as the Son of God (yesterday’s read) and was most likely doing what was expected in their culture. More to ponder re: our individual offerings. Even though Jesus mildly reprimanded Martha here, we know He welcomes our offerings/service no matter the size. The widow’s mite is proof of that. The fact that His time was near was a very emotional and confusing time for these faithful followers. These sisters are a great example for honoring Jesus. Rambling now so time to stop! ☺
Back to “the one thing necessary” from MacArthur Study Bible:
-an attitude of worship and meditation,
-listening with an open mind and heart to Jesus’ words.
.
That brings to mind a song from years ago,
Back to the Heart of Worship by Matt Redman:
When the music fades
All is stripped away
And I simply come
Longing just to bring
Something that’s of worth
That will bless Your heart
I’ll bring You more than a song
For a song in itself
Is not what You have required
You search much deeper within
Through the way things appear
You’re looking into my heart
I’m coming back to the heart of worship
And it’s all about You, it’s all about You, Jesus
I’m sorry, Lord, for the thing I’ve made it
When it’s all about You, it’s all about You, Jesus
King of endless worth
No one could express
How much you deserve
Though I’m weak and poor
All I have is Yours
Every single breath …
.
It’s ALL ABOUT YOU, Jesus!
.
Have a blessedly wonderful weekend , sisters!
Love, hugs, and prayers! ❤
“Though I’m weak and poor
All I have is Yours”, amen ❤️
The “one thing”….yes, this is what we desire.
Great song ❤️
Imagine your brother being dead for 4 days, Jesus calling him out of the tomb, and then having dinner together!!! Lazarus reclining at the same table as Jesus. Oh man! So cool to think of! One day we will be reclining at a table with them and I can’t wait to get more details, its going to be amazing to hear these stories. I know when my family has a good story we are all wanting to tell it. I can’t wait! “No, no Mary let me tell this part! I’m the one he raised from the dead!!” Makes me smile.
Yes, I love the end part, how we all want to tell the good stories!! That is the story (miracle) of all!
I love reading everyone’s insights! I’m praying for all the requests.
Jesus knew exactly what was going to happen to Him and who would betray Him! He knew their hearts just like He knows ours yet He chose to die in their place and ours! He lived extravagantly!
May I pour out my praise to Him today for all He has done for me!
Amen Cheryl!
I had never noticed the instructions for the annointing of the tent of meeting before. Thank you, SRT, for always throwing in some connections for us.
.
And on a side note… let us be lavish and impractical!
❤
This stood out to me too. Anoint the tent.
As I read this account in John 12:1-3 it reminds me of another scene – a little bit similar in Luke 10:38-41.
In Luke Martha is busy serving and where do we find Mary? Sitting at the feet of Jesus. Martha was busy and distracted while Mary focused on spending time with her Lord.
Flip over to John 12:1-3 and once again the scene is set, Martha is serving and where is Mary? Sitting at the feet of Jesus, pouring expensive perfume on him and wiping his feet with her hair.
.
I’m not ridiculing Martha for serving. We all need to be ready and willing to serve. But sometimes we just need to stop – whatever it is we are doing, and sit at the feet of Jesus. It is there we will find joy unspeakable and be filled with His glory.
—
Jesus lavishes His love on us, should we not lavish our love on Him.
.
“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” 1 John 3:1
.
This is a reminder to me this morning, to purpose in my heart to set aside the time out of my busy day – to sit at the feet of Jesus.

Broken and Spilled out sung by Steve Green…
.
One day a plain village woman
Driven by love for her Lord
Recklessly poured out a valuable essence
Disregarding the scorn
And once it was broken and spilled out
A fragrance filled all the room
Like a prisoner released from his shackles
Like a spirit set free from the tomb
Broken and spilled out
Just for love of you, Jesus
My most precious treasure
Lavished on thee
Broken and spilled out
And poured at your feet
In sweet abandon
Let me be spilled out
And used up for Thee
Lord you were God’s precious treasure
His loved and his own perfect Son
Sent here to show me the love of the Father
Just for love it was done
And though you were perfect and holy
You gave up yourself willingly
You spared no expense for my pardon
You were used up and wasted for me
Broken and spilled out
Just for love of me Jesus
God’s most precious treasure
Lavished on me
Broken and spilled out
And poured at my feet
In sweet abandon
Lord you were spilled out
And used up for me
Lord you were spilled out
And used up for me.

Happy Friday She’s! ❤️
We were led to the same scene, Sharon. I was interrupted during my writing and just got my comment posted. ☺ Yours wasn’t here when I started and I love the connection!
Also love that old song! ❤
Love this song and haven’t heard it in years! I listened and now it is running through my head. Thanks for the reminder of this great song!
What a powerful song. I have never heard of it before. Thank you for sharing.
Just a funny for you all that say how “great” I do at jail ministry…my leader, after hearing me lead that last couple of weeks sent me a text last night. Starting with praise always (that’s when you know the “but” is coming. I see your passion..! lol. But, I think you need to let the ladies participate more, and let the volunteers take more parts in the class. Lol–quit talking so much Rhonda…(the shy Rhonda, not so much, lol) Let someone else talk.
Message received. I think I was overwhelmed by double showing up!
☺❤
I admire your great zeal and enthusiasm sister ❤️. I’d rather hear you speak. Imagine how the burning bush had to speak a lot before Moses listened!
It must be crazy to look back in hindsight (like John) and see things in a new, different perspective. What didn’t quite make sense at the time, has clarity now!
That is how it is with life, when you look back, with new, holy eyes! You can see how God was working in your life, and what looked so cloudy, painful, long and hard in the moment, we see with insight! We read the word differently, we see the world anew, we find thankfulness where there was bitterness.
For Mary to have such great love and foresight of who he was. She had seen her brother dead, buried and brought back to life…but so did the disciples, and she lavishly revealed her eternal gratefulness, pouring out her love and indebted devotion.
I hope I have that just, undeniable, full exposure, genuine love for my Jesus! To want to share it so earnestly, to give what I have to others, to make my love for him more valuable than what I have in riches and money!
I think of the song “Abandoned” by Benjamin William Hastings (with Brandon Lake version). Am I ambandoned in my worship and love for him. Also-
“Center” by Bethel. Since I have this great love—Is he the center of my life, which everything stems and flows from Him?! It sure wasn’t until recently! When we tell others of Jesus, it is life-giving to us, and builds our faith. Share the over-whelming, powerful, unwavering love of Jesus today with someone.
❤❤❤
This is so poetic and deep. Thank you Rhonda. The word ABANDON stood out, also in the song SHARON JG shared. He indeed abandoned Himself for us. What precious love He gives.
Do you know the song Abandoned..it really speaks to my Spirit, and I wore it out on my play list last year.
You reminded me of what my daughter said yesterday about looking back and seeing that she and her husband were put into their jobs by God. They’re in jobs where the employers were very willing to allow both Amanda and Gary to miss days or work from home when her treatment required it. Previously, they were both in positions where that wouldn’t have been possible. It’s amazing how God works in advance to give us what we’re going to need in our lives. And we only see it when looking back.
Yes!! Isn’t that amazing! Her letter touched me deeply.
I had closed my training studio the year before my mom died. Because of that, I was able to go visit my dad a lot, he lived 6.5 hours away. But I was able to help him and keep him company for the first little bit. I always thanked God that the timing was right.
After Wednesday’s devo on the Good Shepherd and reading the excerpt of Psalm 23 I was reminded of the verse “you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows” it was wonderful to learn more about the rich tradition behind anointing and the way it’s a tangible way to set someone or something apart for a holy purpose. It really illuminated that verse and chapter of scripture for me.
Rich traditions, indeed. I also think of David’s annointing by Samuel.
JD Walt: There’s something to be said about doing extravagant things for the people we love while they are still alive.
It seems to have pleased Jesus that Mary did this for him on that day rather than saving it for his burial!” JD Walt.
Jesus is a real living person and we all want to be loved. He was surrounded by haters from the religious establishment. The crowds thronged him for miracles. She didn’t ask for anything. I am sure she had needs. This was a moment in time when someone was giving to the giver of life.
Thousands of years later, we still speak of her.
Yes, that’s good Tanya. I had never thought about it that way- that it was probably a beautiful testimony of what He had come to do. I love when people give me praise for what I do, pridefully, but when I get it in a moment of my low point, it is a beautiful recognition that it will all be worth it.
Thank you for that perspective of “giving to the giver of life”.
❤️
Amen
The Bible is not new to me, I’ve read thru it several times (admittedly not deeply studying) so was I sure surprised to see that part about Lazarus being on the hit list of the Pharisees! Honestly do not remember reading that!! The Lord shows us what we need when we need it that’s for sure.
That part surprised me too. I have read this passage many times, but forgot about that part of the story. I wonder how it resolved! Obviously, they didn’t kill him.
I had a thought about Mary’s anointing Jesus‘s feet, since that expensive perfume was reserved typically reserved for anointing priest and kings, etc. That She poured all on his feet because there will be no other priest no other king no other important person to anoint after Jesus so why would you not lay it all on Him.
Ooo, good point! No need to keep/save it. Interesting
I love when Scripture reveals something I’ve read before but never truly noticed. In today’s passage, I realized for the first time that it was Judas Iscariot who complained when Mary poured perfume on Jesus’ feet. I also hadn’t noticed before that the Pharisees wanted to kill Lazarus, too—because his very life was a powerful reminder of Christ’s power. It amazes me how Judas didn’t seem to realize that Jesus saw right through him. There are so many little details showing how Judas thought he was deceiving Jesus, but Jesus already knew his heart.
This also stuck out to me today. I never remember them wanting to kill Lazarus. I love how it said the same crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb was at the triumphal entry and continued to testify.
See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! … 1 John 3:1
Contrasting Hearts:
Love (Mary) vs. Greed (Judas)
Worship (crowds) vs. Rejection (Pharisees)
Seeking (Greeks) vs. Misunderstanding (crowds)
.
Am I more like Mary, willing to pour out what’s precious and valuable, showing extravagant love?
.
Am I like the crowd, praising when convenient, retreating when costly?
.
Am I like the Greeks, truly seeking to see and know Jesus?
❤️
Mary’s story is yet another testament of Jesus’ love for us as women in the Bible. He stood up for Mary when her actions were questioned! He showed her gratitude for doing what no one else had thought to do. How amazing is it that Jesus does the same for us today.
John 12:19 “… Look, the world has gone after Him!”
Lord, I pray this would be true in the days to come.

MERCY ❤️ the wandering sheep … reminded me of Hebrews 12:2, really 12:1-3 From NLT: 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. 2 We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne. 3 Think of all the hostility he endured from sinful people; then you won’t become weary and give up.

Whenever I read that section of Exodus I find myself wondering what that incense smelled like and wishing that I could smell it. I think about how how scent is so closely tied to memory and emotion. After my dad passed, I loved to dig in the closet to find his coat because it smelled of his after shave and made me feel so close to him again. Did the Jewish people have this same experience in their worship? Did the smell immediately make them feel closer to God from his signature scent? Will we smell this same scent in eternity do you think? This whole passage stirs so much curiosity in me.
❤️
This is so true!
❤️
Ooo, I love that. I never thought about how the scent could have immediately made them feel closer to the Father. ❤️
Great questions! My mom wore a particular cologne and when I smell it, it causes me to remember my mom. My dad roasted coffee most of my life but I do not like coffee. But when I smell a good blend of coffee, it reminds me if my dad! Strong and roasted just right!
I love the smell of pipe tobacco because my father smoked a pipe until I was maybe 7-8 years old. I remember sitting in his favorite chair and opening the canister just to inhale the scent! It is something that I could not possibly enjoy without that association.
John 12:19 NLT
“Then the Pharisees said to each other, ‘There’s nothing we can do. Look, everyone has gone after him!'”
.
Oh, Lord, may this be true! May those who don’t know You, turn and go after You. May Your Spirit fall and revival spread in this land and around the world, starting with me.

As I was reading today this passage caught my attention John 12:10-11 But the chief priests had decided to kill Lazarus also, because he was the reason many of the Jews were deserting them and believing in Jesus.
Me too- I never really paid attention before! This is a gentle reminder of your being persecuted your probably doing something right!

Cece winans song Alabaster box is one of my favorite songs! It speaks to me, it speaks of me. It has me on my knees whenever I hear it! It is about me!
.
If I had been around Jesus, back in the day, i think I would have sought Him out, and done the same. I would have poured the pint of my very expensive perfume on Jesus’s feet too.
I could have been Mary. A grateful and thankful woman in awe of the man who gave my life meaning, who rescued me in my darkest times and who opened my eyes to who He truly was.
If my story of Julee and Gods gift of showing me where she was, is all I ever received, I would still give thanks, I would still give praise, shoot, I would pour my expensive perfume on Jesus’ feet and wipe them with my greying hair! I would kneel at His feet, in reverence, listening to no-one but Jesus and His words..
I would do it not for praise, recognition or money, but because my heart, my soul my being is thankful!
.
And i didn’t even know what a few pages later He would go on to do for me/us..
.
A pint of expensive perfume.. is that enough gratitude in these days, knowing the cost of our salvation, our redemption, our Hope in Him?
.
I would pour a million times the perfume on Jesus’s feet, I would pour daily, in thanks and absolute gratitude for the Anointed One, who came to give us life and life to the full, through His actions and love..
.
Thank you Jesus. Thank you..
.
Amen.
.
A chilly Friday here, so sending warming love and hugs covered in prayers and thanks for you all..
Much love, always..
Tina..♥️
May we all worship in thankfulness at the feet of Jesus ❤️ Reminded of the song, Look For Me At Jesus’ Feet
YESS!!! it’s one of my favorites also, it speaks directly to my heart…. I see it as my Anthem. Thank You Lord Jesus for your grace & goodness & Your Blessed Faithfulness!
Beautiful, Tina!
