the lyrics of truth

Open Your Bible

Psalm 92:1-5

{Text: Psalm 92:1-5}

I love music. I love singing in the car, while I cook, rocking my daughter, while I vacuum: you name a place, and I bet I’ve sung there. Sometimes when I think about the ratio of scripture I’ve memorized to lyrics? It’s quite embarrassing. I have so much brain space occupied by lyrics of music – some uplifting, sure, but some I would rather not name.

Today I want to challenge us as a community. In the comments, twitter, facebook, or Instagram, share a favorite song–a song that glorifies Him, the Most High, Lord of Lords, Kings of Kings. If you can find a song that uses scripture, awesome! If it’s a song about being thankful, great!

Here’s the challenge: begin your day with songs that center your heart on Him. Continue your day with music and lyrics that bring Him glory. And end your day with the same. Play a song before you eat dinner as a family. Turn on a few songs while you clean up the kitchen or fold laundry. Use these seemingly mundane moments to bring your focus and attention back to Him.

Don’t know what to sing? Enjoy the lyrics to a favorite hymn below!

All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name

All hail the power of Jesus’ name!
Let angels prostrate fall;
bring forth the royal diadem,
and crown him Lord of all.
Bring forth the royal diadem,
and crown him Lord of all.

Ye chosen seed of Israel’s race,
ye ransomed of the fall,
hail him who saves you by his grace,
and crown him Lord of all.
Hail him who saves you by his grace,
and crown him Lord of all.

Let every kindred, every tribe
on this terrestrial ball,
to him all majesty ascribe,
and crown him Lord of all.
To him all majesty ascribe,
and crown him Lord of all.

O that with yonder sacred throng,
we at his feet may fall!
We’ll join the everlasting song,
and crown him Lord of all.
We’ll join the everlasting song,
and crown him Lord of all.

Text: Edward Perrronet, 1779; alt. St. 4 John Rippon, 1787

    I adore the albums
    Beautiful Love by Elizabeth Hunnicutt
    and also
What If It Is by Joel Hanson …
Both albums are so great in their entirety and the lyrics are beautiful.

Bless the Lord, o my soul and all that is within me bless His holy name. I will be careful not to forget His benefits. He forgives all my iniquity and wraps me with His goodness. Thank you Jesus.

  8. Temeka says:

Thanks, thanks I give you thanks
    For all you have done
I am so blessed, my soul is at rest
Oh Lord I give you thanks

This is a simple chorus from a great song shows God the gratitude I fail to express in simple words. I am super grateful for both music, surely a godly gift, and I’m grateful for this loving relationship with our Heavenly Father.

  9. Kim says:

My family and I have made this a daily routine to make music a part of our lives. We have used music to express ourselves as individuals and as a group. There are certain songs that really have a big meaning for us.

  10. Jen says:

The other day, while driving to work, a childhood song, which I have not sung in maybe 20 years, convicted me. I find it amazing that we sing these songs over and over, but most times just skip over the depth of its message.

This song is so short and simple, yet packs a punch!

He’s changing me, my precious Jesus

I’m not the same person that I used to be

    Some times it’s slow going

    but there’s a knowing

That one day perfect I will be

    Little by little everyday

    Little by little everyway

    My Jesus is changing me

Since I’ve made a turn about faith

I’ve been walking in His grace

    My Jesus is changing me

  11. Kandice says:

As I sat down to start my studies, there was a song on my heart & mind, My Worship Is For Real:

    You don't know my story
All the things that I've been through
    You can't feel my pain
What I had to go through to get here
    You'll never understand my Praise
Don't try to figure it out
Because my Worship, my Worship is for real
Because my Worship, my Worship is for real

    Then it says:

I've been through too much not to Worship Him

Simple song, SO much meaning, Praise God! It's like my testimony….how can I NOT Worship Him??!!!

  12. Lindsey L says:

So, I'm a little late, but maybe this song will speak to someone who reads.

Loving this post too! This hymn and Victory in Jesus always thrill my heart!

    363. And Can It Be that I Should Gain

    Text: Charles Wesley, 1707-1788
    Music: Thomas Campbell
Tune: SAGINA, Meter: 88.88.88 with Repeat
1.And can it be that I should gain
an interest in the Savior's blood!
Died he for me? who caused his pain!
For me? who him to death pursued?
Amazing love! How can it be
that thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
Amazing love! How can it be
that thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

2.'Tis mystery all: th' Immortal dies!
Who can explore his strange design?
In vain the firstborn seraph tries
to sound the depths of love divine.
    'Tis mercy all! Let earth adore;
let angel minds inquire no more.
    'Tis mercy all! Let earth adore;
let angel minds inquire no more.

3.He left his Father's throne above
(so free, so infinite his grace!),
emptied himself of all but love,
and bled for Adam's helpless race.
'Tis mercy all, immense and free,
for O my God, it found out me!
'Tis mercy all, immense and free,
for O my God, it found out me!

    4.Long my imprisoned spirit lay,
    fast bound in sin and nature's night;
    thine eye diffused a quickening ray;
    I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
my chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed thee.
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed thee.

    5.No condemnation now I dread;
    Jesus, and all in him, is mine;
alive in him, my living Head,
    and clothed in righteousness divine,
bold I approach th' eternal throne,
and claim the crown, through Christ my own.
Bold I approach th' eternal throne,
and claim the crown, through Christ my my own.
Ps. Accidentally erased the last two words! Hope I remembered right!

  14. Lori says:

‘How Great Thou Aren’t”. Then sings my soul, my Savior God to thee!

  15. Rachel says:

I have been singing this song for weeks, since we did it in church several weeks ago. It is so powerful. Just saying the name of Jesus over and over can change you, your perspective, give peace that is unexplainable. Here's the link by Prestonwood Church Choir: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdD9S8txImI
Jesus, something special, supernatural about Your name.
Jesus, something happens when I mention your name.
Demons have to flee when I say Jesus.
Sickness has to heal when I say Jesus.
Every knee shall bow before and every tongue proclaim
with worthy praise, that matchless name of Jesus.
Jesus, something special, supernatural about Your name.
Jesus, something happens when I mention your name.
When I call upon your name the very atmosphere will have to change.
We'll be transformed, we'll never be the same
by the power of your holy name.
Jesus, something special, supernatural about Your name.
Jesus, something happens when I mention your name. Pepeat
    Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.
    Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.
    Something happens.
    When I call you

  16. Connie says:

    Babbie mason sings

All things work for the good
    Though sometimes we can't
    See how they could
Struggles that break our hearts in two
Sometimes blind us to the truth
Our Father knows what's best for us
His ways are not our own
So when your pathway grows dim
And you just can't see him,
Remember He's still on the throne

    Chorus:

God is too wise to be mistaken
God is too good to be unkind
    So when you don't understand
    When don't see his plan
When you can't trace his hand
    Trust His Heart

    He sees the master plan
He holds the future in his hand,
Don't live as those who have no hope,
While our hope is found in him.
    We see the present clearly
But he sees the first and last
And like a tapestry He's weaving you and me,
To someday be just like him

    (Chorus)

He alone is faithful and true
He alone knows what is best for you

    (Chorus)

When you can't trace his hand
When you don't see his plan
    When you don't understand
    Trust His Heart

  17. Jess says:

I'm a few days behind, playing catch up, but the song that gets me every. single. time. is "Revelation Song". That song literally brings me to my knees. My fave version is by Phillips, Craig & Dean. Another one is a newer one by them, When the Stars Burn Down. In fact, I'm going to crank them both up right now! :)

  18. The Crafting Coop says:

The one song I find myself singing a lot is David Crowder Band – How He Loves
    It is definitely a favorite.

  19. I love Be Thou My Vision, Come Thou Fount, and I Stand Amazed. I grew up singing hymns in church every week, and now that I'm at a different church, I kind of miss them and wish we sang them more often.

  20. Laura says:

A favorite of mine, especially this time of year, is Josh Grobin’s “Thankful”.

  21. Karen says:

Without a doubt, “Nothing But the Blood.”

What can wash away my sins?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

    Oh, precious us the flow
that makes me white as snow
    No other fount I know
Nothing but the blood of Jesus!

  22. Calista says:

I was saved during a tornado, singing the only song I could think of at the time- Amazing Grace. My sisters introduced me to a new one when I went back to the US last month to spend time with my dad before he died:

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now I’m found
Was blind, but now I see.

    My chains are gone
    I’ve been set free
    My God, my Savior
    Ransomed me
    And like a flood
    His mercy reigns
    Unending love
    Amazing grace.

  23. Tracy says:

Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come, Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heav’n and home, When Jesus is my portion? My constant Friend is He: His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me; His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Refrain: I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free, For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

“Let not your heart be troubled,” His tender word I hear, And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears; Though by the path He leadeth, but one step I may see; His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me; His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Whenever I am tempted, whenever clouds arise, When songs give place to sighing, when hope within me dies, I draw the closer to Him, from care He sets me free; His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me; His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

So many songs, hymn suggestions. I love this post. I guess I take for granted that I have music sung around me all the time. My son is worship lead at my church. He is always practicing, singing praising the Lord. Everytime I hear him worship I am humbled. Music such a beautiful gift from God.

  25. Debbie says:

This song has been on my heart for awhile. It is a beautiful reminder of God's purpose for me!

When I'm With You by: Klaus Kuehn

I was made for loving You
    I was made to worship
I was made to give you praise
All of my days O Lord
    My all is for You
    My all is for You
    'Cause when I'm with You
    My heart is satisfied
    And when I'm with you
    My spirit can fly
    When I'm with you
All the cares of my life
    Fade away
'Till all I want until all I see
    Is You
'Til all I want is You
'Til all I see is You

  26. Carol says:

This post really expresses my heart. I OFTEN have a song on my lips, and love to worship by singing praises to The Lord. My favorite hymn is "Great Is Thy Faithfulness"…great is thy faithfulness…morning by morning new mercies I see…all I have needed thy hand has provided…Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me! (Lamentations 3:22-23)

  27. offthewaller says:

Spirit Speaks by All Sons & Daughters. Their music just totally transforms the environment of whatever I'm doing into a worship session!

    (Verse1)
Your spirit speaks It moves in me
And I awaken to your love
You're drawing me unto my knees
And I astounded by your love

    (Chorus)
Cause you spoke life into my lungs
And you are the air I breathe (You are the air I breathe)
    Still you move inside me
And you are the song I sing (you are the song I sing)

    (Verse2)
You cover me with arms that reach
And I amazed by your sweet grace
    You set me free
    You washed me clean
And I forgiven by your grace

    (Chorus)
Cause you spoke life into my lungs
And you are the air I breathe (You are th air I breathe)
    Still you move inside me
And You are the song I sing (You are the song I sing)

    (YEAH, OH YEAH, YEAH)

    (Bridge Repeat 3x)

    With every breath I breathe
    With every song I sing
I want to shout it out "LORD I AM LISTENING"
To every word you speak I'll go where you will lead
To love the least of these is my greatest offering

  28. Shannon says:

    How lovely is
    Your dwelling place
    Oh Lord Almighty,
    For my soul longs
    And even faints
    For You
    Oh, here my heart
    Is satisfied (is satisfied)
    Within Your presence
    I sing beneath
    The shadow of
    Your wings

Better is one day in Your courts
Better is one day in Your house
Better is one day in Your courts
    Than thousands elsewhere
Better is one day in Your courts
Better is one day in Your house
Better is one day in Your courts
    Than thousands elsewhere
    (Than thousands elsewhere)

    One thing I ask,
    And I would seek,
    To see Your beauty
    To find You in
    The place Your glory dwells
    (One thing I ask)
    One thing I ask
    And I would seek,
    To see Your beauty
    To find You in
    The place Your glory dwells

(My heart and flesh cry out)
My heart and flesh cry out
    To You, the Living God
Your Spirit's water to my soul
    I've tasted, and I've seen
    Come once again to me
I will draw near to You
I will draw near to You
    To You

    Better is one day
    Better is one day
    Better is one day
    Than thousands elsewhere
    (2x)
Better is one day in Your courts
Better is one day in Your house
Better is one day in Your courts
    Than thousands elsewhere
    (4X)
    Yeah, than thousands elsewhere (Yeah)
    Oh, than thousands elsewhere

  29. Annie says:

Never Once by Matt Redman is a very powerful song for me- there are lots of times I just need to remember we are not alone no matter what is going on in our lives.

    "Never Once"

    Standing on this mountaintop
Looking just how far we’ve come
    Knowing that for every step
    You were with us

    Kneeling on this battle ground
Seeing just how much You’ve done
    Knowing every victory
    Was Your power in us

Scars and struggles on the way
But with joy our hearts can say
    Yes, our hearts can say

Never once did we ever walk alone
Never once did You leave us on our own
You are faithful, God, You are faithful

    Kneeling on this battle ground
Seeing just how much You’ve done
    Knowing every victory
    Was Your power in us

Scars and struggles on the way
But with joy our hearts can say
    Yes, our hearts can say

Never once did we ever walk alone
Never once did You leave us on our own
You are faithful, God, You are faithful
You are faithful, God, You are faithful

Scars and struggles on the way
But with joy our hearts can say
Never once did we ever walk alone
    Carried by Your constant grace
    Held within Your perfect peace
Never once, no, we never walk alone

Never once did we ever walk alone
Never once did You leave us on our own
You are faithful, God, You are faithful

Every step we are breathing in Your grace
Evermore we’ll be breathing out Your praise
You are faithful, God, You are faithful
You are faithful, God, You are faithful

You are faithful, God, You are faithful
You are faithful, God, You are faithful

  30. Mariam says:

This was a lovely post. I've been thinking a lot lately about the music I grew up with in the church. I took a free class recently entitled, "Music in the Black Church," and I've also been thinking about scenes from the church I grew up in for the purposes of writing a book. Wonderful memories of songs and the voices I used to hear singing them have filled my writing notebook; sometimes I just have to jot down titles and hope I can find them on emusic or at least YouTube, but it's hard. We don't sing hymns at my church, and I miss them dearly.

Anyway, I often rise with this song, sometimes called, "In the Garden," in my head. I hear it with the first 2 verses and the chorus:

I come to the garden alone
While the dew is still on the roses
And the voice I hear falling on my ear
    The Son of God discloses.

    Refrain

And He walks with me, and He talks with me,
    And He tells me I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
    None other has ever known.

He speaks, and the sound of His voice,
Is so sweet the birds hush their singing,
And the melody that He gave to me
    Within my heart is ringing.

    Refrain

I’d stay in the garden with Him
Though the night around me be falling,
But He bids me go; through the voice of woe
His voice to me is calling.

    1. StephanieR says:

I love this song! I sing it over and over to myself! Because I garden I have often pictured myself in a garden with Jesus there–just talking!

    2. The Crafting Coop says:

This is one of my favorites! We sing this a lot at my church.

  31. What a lovely post this is!

My favorite songs are from the Hide 'Em in Your Heart series, because my mom would let us listen to those CDs whenever we got in the car, so I wound up memorizing a solid bunch of Scripture without even knowing it before I was 5! I will still start humming the songs when I hear a verse of scripture, because I connect to the verses so deeply through the music I learned as a child sitting in the car. :) I'm excited that the CDs are online now (and on Spotify, even!!) because I definitely want to share them with my children one day.

My favorites from that series would have to be "The Fruit of the Spirit" (Galatians 5:22 & 25), "I Can Do All Things" (Philippians 4:13), and "Do Not Worry" (Matthew 6:25, 26, & 34a), because I still find myself singing them without any prompting. What a great reminder of God's everlasting love.

I've also been listening to All Sons and Daughters as I scroll through the comments, and their music is so moving. Thanks for sharing!

  32. godcenteredmom says:

My sons started singing this hymn around the house after learning it at school. I often find myself singing as well:

O for a thousand tongues to sing
    my great Redeemer's praise,
the glories of my God and King,
    the triumphs of his grace!

2.My gracious Master and my God,
    assist me to proclaim,
to spread through all the earth abroad
    the honors of thy name.

3.Jesus! the name that charms our fears,
    that bids our sorrows cease;
'tis music in the sinner's ears,
'tis life, and health, and peace.

4.He breaks the power of canceled sin,
    he sets the prisoner free;
    his blood can make the foulest clean;
    his blood availed for me.

5.He speaks, and listening to his voice,
    new life the dead receive;
    the mournful, broken hearts rejoice,
    the humble poor believe.

6.Hear him, ye deaf; his praise, ye dumb,
    your loosened tongues employ;
ye blind, behold your savior come,
and leap, ye lame, for joy.

7.In Christ, your head, you then shall know,
    shall feel your sins forgiven;
    anticipate your heaven below,
and own that love is heaven.

  33. Nicki says:

I love that song "hands" by J.J. heller too. As a blind person, I love hands, the feel of them, how each has a different texture. I like imaging myself holding onto god's hand. I also love music. music is my life! I sing and play piano at church also. i also memorize lyrics more easily, and that might be a good thing when it comes to praise songs because they do bring to mind scriptures. I read in a book once, a christian novel in fact, that one of the characters advised memorizing Scriptures by setting them to music. that has helped me, but I don't do it like I should. One of my favorite songs is also by Casting Crowns, "who am I." So true and so poignant!

  34. rocknitat55 says:

Heidi, I love these lyrics. I am going to check out this song and artist. I to am recovering from an illness. There r some days that r so painful for me. I am comforted n knowing that I will never leave his hands.

    I also love Casting Crowns…

I think we have to be careful n judging people’s motives… their hearts…
After working n ministry for years I ve seen the most angelic songster deliver the
holest song and be a person that did the most unchristlike things. So bad that I am sure God will say ” I know u not”. There r christian artists and hymns that will have u depressed and melancholy. I want to make a joyful noise unto the Lord! I want to rise out of the ashes. I want to leap and jump and declare the works of the Lord.
Its important to moniter what u see and hear but know that deception is everywhere!
Wow, that’s enough preaching for today. Love u community. I so look forward to communicating with u. God bless.

  35. shannon says:

i can totally identify with this post today! i love music and almost have it on. so many times i just sit and listen to worship music and allow it to speak to my soul. i pray using the lyrics. i just soak it up! it's so refreshing to me. i believe there is so much power in worship music!
so to pick just one song, oh my! lately i've been really into all sons and daughters, particularly "the longing" and "oh how i need you". and just recently i found the song "rooftops" by jesus culture. it's the kind of song that you shout out & throw your hands in the air! in fact i'm listening to it now as i type & the tears are coming!
what a beautiful reminder today to be thankful for the talents of musicians that create such outstanding music that reflects the passion for our creator & savior.

  36. christa jean says:

I am just like you! Singing all.the.time. I can hear a song one time, and I remember the lyrics. I know I am called to lead others into His Presence through worship. In fact, because I am a worship leader and because of my uncanny ability to recall lyrics, I try to be careful what I listen to. That new song by Adele? Beautiful. But I will not listen. I can’t listen. Has anyone else noticed that the artist’s spirit seems to come through their music? You can tell this by the way it makes you feel: melancholy, depressed, happy, etc.
It is for this reason that I can’t.

I don’t judge those who listen to Adele, haha. I am just sharing MY conviction. For me, music affects my whole being and I must saturate myself in God-infused music.

One of the songs I turn to throughout the day, is by Jenn Johnson of Bethel Worship…

    “God, I look to you,
    I won’t be overwhelmed.
    Give me vision,
To see things like You do.

    God, I look to You,
You’re where my help comes from.
    Give me wisdom,
You know just what to do, yeah.

    Hallelujah, our God reigns… ”
    Powerful.

  37. Heidi says:

Karen, He is Mighty to Save is one of my faves, too! Always makes me tear up with thankfulness at church when our worship team sings it.

  38. Heidi says:

I love the music by JJ Heller. “Your Hands” is a song that I used to think was pretty and that’s about it. It speaks so much more to me now after going through open heart surgery, dealing with anxiety of getting sick again. Etc. it’s a lot for a 27 year old to take but at the same time I can find comfort knowing I’ll never leave His hands.

    Your Hands
    I have unanswered prayers
    I have trouble I wish wasn’t there
And I have asked a thousand ways
That you would take my pain away
You would take my pain away

    I am trying to understand
How to walk this weary land
Make straight the paths that crooked lie
Oh Lord, before these feet of mine
Oh Lord, before these feet of mine

When my world is shaking, heaven stands
    When my heart is breaking
    I never leave your hands

When you walked upon the earth
You healed the broken, lost and hurt
I know you hate to see me cry
One day you will set all things right
Yeah, one day you will set all things right

When my world is shaking, heaven stands
    When my heart is breaking
    I never leave your hands

Your hands that shaped the world
    Are holding me
    They hold me still
Your hands that shaped the world
    Are holding me
    They hold me still

When my world is shaking, heaven stands
    When my heart is breaking
    I never leave you
When my world is shaking, heaven stands
    When my heart is breaking
    I never leave
    I never leave your hands

  39. Kellie says:

I love this post. Lyrics are so powerful and such a great way for memorizing scripture and truth! One of my favorite worship songs is “o the blood”VERSE 1
    O the blood
    Crimson love
    Price of life’s demand
    Shameful sin
    Placed on Him
    The Hope of every man

    CHORUS
O the blood of Jesus washes me
O the blood of Jesus shed for me
What a sacrifice that saved my life
Yes, the blood, it is my victory

    VERSE 2
    Savior Son
    Holy One
    Slain so I can live
    See the Lamb
    The great I Am
    Who takes away my sin

    BRIDGE
O the blood of the Lamb
O the blood of the Lamb
O the blood of the Lamb
The precious blood of the Lamb
    What a sacrifice
    That saved my life
Yes, the blood, it is my victory

    VERSE 3
    O what love
    No greater love
    Grace, how can it be
    That in my sin
    Yes, even then
He shed His blood for me
Send “O The Blood” Ringtone to your Cell

  40. javacia says:

Hey ladies, I've really been struggling with this lately. I've grown bored with the songs on my local contemporary Christian station so I need suggestions of albums to buy. I'd like something somewhat new and preferably by a female artist. Any recommendations?

    1. Connie says:

Some of my favorite female voices are babbie mason, Kim hill, Damaris carbaugh…their songs are always good

      1. Becky says:

        Kim Walker Smith
        Misty Edwards
Bethel music with Jenn Johnson, Steffany Frizzel-Gretzinger and a bunch of other awesome people.

  41. Beth says:

“He has made me glad, He has made me glad. I will rejoice for He has made me glad!
He has made me glad, He has made glad. I will rejoice for He has made me glad!

I will His gates with Thanksgiving in my heart, I will enter His courts with praise!
I will say ‘this is the day that the Lord has made.’
I will rejoice for He has made me glad”

I’ve been singing this since we read these verses a couple days ago :)

  42. Karen says:

Mighty To Save is one of my favorites!

  43. Olivia says:

Two of my favorites are"Glorious Day" by Casting Crowns and "10,000 Reasons" by Matt Redmond. (Sorry, I'm horrible at memorizing lyrics!)

Old favorite hymns: "Open now thy gates of beauty," "Immortal, invisible, God only wise." "When He Cometh."

I started playing the organ for church services 40 years ago when I was 13. Okay, make that 41 years ago. So just about every hymn is one of my favorites in any given week.

    1. claire says:

10, 000 reasons is a great song! I will always remember before the first time we did that song at church we were all given a pile of post its as and had to see how many reasons we could think of to praise God. Was an awesome way to start worship and the image has really stuck with me. I’m challenged every time we sing it to think of at least 10!

  44. Tonya says:

A verse from one of my favorite worship songs, In Christ Alone …

No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From a life’s first cry to final breath
    Jesus commands my destiny

No power of hell, no scheme of man
Could ever pluck me from His hand
‘Til He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I stand

    1. Frances says:

A favourite with us too, my hubby & I are usually both all teared up by the end

    2. StephanieR says:

I love this song and by the end verses have tears rolling down my cheeks!

  45. Kristin says:

The song I immediately thought of is by Ascend the Hill and it's called "Sing". I've actually been thinking of it through this entire series so far. Here is a link to the song on you tube in case anyone wants to hear it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhR9GQ_0uHk

This we know, the Lord is God
And we are yours, we are your own
We understand we know the truth
You made us yours we're yours alone
So we enter in, into your gates with thanksgiving

    For you are good
    And your mercy will defend
Your lovingkindness lasts, it knows no end
    And I sing, I sing,
    I sing of your faithfulness
I sing of your truth again

Oh I sing of your faithfulness

We make a joyful noise to you
To you, oh Lord, all praise is due
With this song we bring you now
Our heart's desire to sing it loud
So we come today to your courts singing praise

    I sing of your truth
    I sing of your faithfulness
It never ends, it never ends
It never ends, it never ends

    [spoken]
Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth! Worship the Lord with gladness. Come before him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his. We are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and praise his name, for the Lord is good and his love endures forever. His faithfulness continues to all generations.

    [sung]
(We come) Into your gates with thanksgiving in our hearts
We come into your courts with praise on our lips
We come into your gates with thanksgiving in our hearts
We come into your courts with praise on our lips

  46. Carrie says:

    Love this song! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4MevLSD_JY

Come, Thou Fount of every blessing,
    Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
    Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
    Teach me some melodious sonnet,
    Sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it,
    Mount of Thy redeeming love.

Sorrowing I shall be in spirit,
Till released from flesh and sin,
Yet from what I do inherit,
    Here Thy praises I’ll begin;
    Here I raise my Ebenezer;
    Here by Thy great help I’ve come;
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure,
    Safely to arrive at home.

Jesus sought me when a stranger,
    Wandering from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
    Interposed His precious blood;
How His kindness yet pursues me
    Mortal tongue can never tell,
Clothed in flesh, till death shall loose me
    I cannot proclaim it well.

O to grace how great a debtor
    Daily I’m constrained to be!
Let Thy goodness, like a fetter,
Bind my wandering heart to Thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
    Prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it,
Seal it for Thy courts above.

O that day when freed from sinning,
    I shall see Thy lovely face;
Clothed then in blood washed linen
    How I’ll sing Thy sovereign grace;
Come, my Lord, no longer tarry,
    Take my ransomed soul away;
Send thine angels now to carry
Me to realms of endless day.

    1. madrejulie says:

this is mine too Carrie! It always brings me back to that place of remembering God is God and I am not!

  47. Kristine says:

I love the idea of my name being written on His heart. I get goose bumps every time we sing this in church.

“Before The Throne Of God Above”

Before the throne of God above
    I have a strong, a perfect plea:
A great High Priest, whose name is Love,
Who ever lives and pleads for me.

My name is graven on his hands,
    My name is written on his heart;
I know that while in heaven he stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart
No tongue can bid me thence depart.

When Satan tempts me to despair,
And tells me of the guilt within,
Upward I look, and see him there
Who made an end of all my sin.

    Because a sinless Savior died,
    My sinful soul is counted free;
For God, the Just, is satisfied
To look on Him and pardon me
To look on Him and pardon me

    Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Praise the One,
    Risen Son of God!

Behold him there, the risen Lamb
    My perfect, spotless righteousness,
    The great unchangeable I AM,
The King of glory and of grace!

One in himself, I cannot die
My soul is purchased by his blood
My life is hid with Christ on high,
With Christ, my Savior and my God
With Christ, my Savior and my God

  48. Alesha says:

    All this pain.

I wonder if I’ll ever find my way

I wonder if my life could really change at all

    All this earth

Could all that is lost ever be found?

Could a garden come up from this ground at all?

    You make beautiul things

You make beautiul things out of dust

    You make beautiul things

You make beautiul things out of us

    All around

Hope is springing up from this old ground

Out of chaos life is being found in You

    You make beautiul things

You make beautiul things out of dust

    You make beautiul things

You make beautiul things out of us

    You make me new

    You are making me new

    You make me new

    You are making me new

    You make beautiul things

You make beautiul things out of dust

    You make beautiul things

You make beautiul things out of us

    1. Alesha says:

This is called Beautiful Things by Gungor. It speaks so much truth.

      1. Kristin says:

We sing thing at my church back home (I just moved to a different state) very often. It's such a beautiful song.

  49. jimmie lee says:

My solid songs change all the time. Right now, its David Crowder Band After All (Holy).
As for hymns no doubt, It Is Well With Soul.

  50. Dyan says:

My favorite hymn is Amazing Grace. I have hummed the tune to all three of my kids. I love it. And my favorite contemporary Christian song is One Thing Remains by Jesus Culture. Actually, I could name a few but that one is at the top of the list.

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.
T’was Grace that taught my heart to fear.
    And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear
    The hour I first believed.
Through many dangers, toils and snares
    I have already come;
‘Tis Grace that brought me safe thus far
and Grace will lead me home.
The Lord has promised good to me.
    His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be,
    As long as life endures.
Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
    And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

When we’ve been here ten thousand years
    Bright shining as the sun.
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
    Than when we’ve first begun.

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

  51. Lisa says:

My favorite hymn is usually only sung on Easter, but I think it should be sung all year round.

    He Lives

    I serve a risen Saviour,
    He's in the world today;
I know that He is living,
    Whatever men may say;
I see His hand of mercy,
I hear His voice of cheer,
And just the time I need Him
    He's always near.

    ####Chorus:

    He lives, He lives,
    Christ Jesus lives today!
He walks with me and He talks with me
    Along life's narrow way.
He lives, He lives, salvation to impart!
You ask me how I know He lives:
    He lives within my heart.

In all the world around me
    I see His loving care,
And tho my heart grows weary
    I never will despair;
I know that He is leading
    Thro' all the stormy blast,
    The day of His appearing
    Will come at last.

    ####

    Rejoice, rejoice, O Christian,
Lift up your voice and sing
    Eternal hallelujahs
    To Jesus Christ the King!
The hope of all who seek Him,
The help of all who find,
    None other is so loving,
    So good and kind.

    ####

  52. StephanieR says:

Mine is an old one but comes to mind every time I look out my window and watch the storm clouds roll over the mighty Rockies!

    How Great thou art!

    Oh! Lord my God
    When I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds thy hands have made
    I see the stars
    I hear the rolling thunder
Thy power throughout the universe displayed!

    Then sings my soul!
    My savior God to thee!
    How great thou art!
    How great thou art!

    1. Lisa says:

When my son was a fussy baby, I ran out of lullabies to sing while trying to get him to fall asleep, so I switched to hymns. This was one of his favorites :)

    2. Kandice says:

This is my favorite song….I get chills every time I think about the lyrics to this song, then the tears flow. What an Awesome, Mighty God we serve!!

  53. rocknitat55 says:

I thought about this song this morning:

You, know, sometimes in life, situations are going to occur where you may look to the left or the right and you can’t find any answers and you can’t find anybody to help you but I’m reminded of the Word that says they that wait upon the Lord, He shall renew their strength. They shall mount up on wings as eagles. They shall run and not be weary. They shall walk and not faint. Come on. You’ve got to learn how to wait.

    I don’t mind waiting.
    I don’t mind waiting.
I don’t mind waiting, on You Lord.
    I don’t mind waiting.
    I don’t mind waiting.
I don’t mind waiting, on You Lord.

    I don’t mind waiting. (I don’t mind)
I don’t mind waiting. (I’m gonna wait on)
I don’t mind waiting, on You Lord.
(on You Lord) (I don’t mind)
I don’t mind waiting. (Because I know He’ll come after awhile)
    I don’t mind waiting. (So, I don’t mind no)
I don’t mind waiting, on You Lord. (I’ll wait on You Lord)

    I don’t mind waiting. (I don’t mind)
I don’t mind waiting. (I will wait on you)
I don’t mind waiting, on You Lord.
(I’m waiting right here because I know You’ll come)
I don’t mind waiting. (Yes, I will, Yes, I will I’ll wait on you)
    I don’t mind waiting.
I don’t mind waiting, on You Lord.
    (Yes, I’ll learn to wait.)

    I don’t mind waiting. (I don’t mind waiting)
I don’t mind waiting. (I’ll wait on You Jesus, waiting)
I don’t mind waiting, on the Lord. (Yes!)
    I don’t mind waiting.
    I don’t mind waiting. (waiting)
I don’t mind waiting, on the Lord. (with choir)

    I don’t mind waiting. (It’s a long way)
I don’t mind waiting. (I’m gonna wait on you, Jesus)
I don’t mind waiting, on You Lord. (ooohh)
    I don’t mind waiting. (ooohh)
    I don’t mind waiting. (I don’t mind waiting)
I don’t mind waiting, on You Lord. (I don’t mind waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting.)

I don’t mind waiting. (I don’t mind, You are God, it don’t matter, I’ll wait on You Lord.)
    I don’t mind waiting.
I don’t mind waiting, on You Lord.
    I don’t mind waiting.
I don’t mind waiting. (I don’t mind waiting, it’s a privilege, it is an honor to wait on You)
I don’t mind waitinig, on You Lord.

I love this song, I am reminded that those who wait upon the Lord shall mount up like eagles, they shall run and not be weary.
Awesome post I shall be singing all day.

  54. Madeleine says:

What we hear, say, think – all matters. This devo reminds me that fighting for the truth starts in my own heart, my own mind. If I stay grateful and able to praise our awesome God, no matter the circumstances, then grace can flow freely. Thank you for encouraging me to keep seeking freedom from my hang ups and hurts so I can live in Jesus wonderful love and be of service.

  55. claire says:

This is a song that came to me earlier this week and has stuck with me. It is special as it really helped me when I was grieving for my grandad a few years ago. Matt Redman better is one day in your courts.

How lovely is Your dwelling place, Oh Lord Almighty My soul longs and even faints for You For here my heart is satisfied, within Your presence I sing beneath the shadow of Your wings

Better is one day in Your courts Better is one day in Your house Better is one day in Your courts Than thousands elsewhere (repeat)

One thing I ask, and I would seek, to see Your beauty, To find You in the place Your glory dwells My heart and flesh cry out, For You the living God Your Spirit’s water for my soul I’ve tasted and I’ve seen, Come once again to me. I will draw near to You. I will draw near to You
