Thanksgiving and Prayer

Philippians 1:3-11, Acts 16:16-40, Philemon 1:4-7

A few Advents ago, I wrote letters until the ring finger on my right hand blistered. For two days straight, I wrote cards of gratitude and joy for each of the volunteers in the children’s ministry I lead, followed by cards filled with stickers and sweet words for every child (ages three and over) in my ministry. In each child’s card, I wrote a variation on a similar theme, but all had the same conclusion: “I hope you always remember how much Jesus loves you.”

I assume these cards were tossed aside in the holiday hubbub or purged in the requisite January clean-out that most families undertake. As I wrote, I kept thinking, “Do these words matter? Is it worth the time?” Maybe the cards matter, maybe they don’t, but I know the words on them do. And every time I penned that phrase, I prayed the child who received the card would take it to heart.

Paul’s letter to the Philippians starts with similar sentiments, echoing ancient truths and the hope that the words within the letter would sink down deep into the hearts of those who would read it. This opening exhortation to his readers in Philippi offers a template for godly relationships of believers deeply committed to sharing the love of Christ. Paul expressed gratitude for the Philippians, “for every remembrance” of them (Philippians 1:3), as well as their partnership in the spread of the gospel.

Paul seemed to care very deeply for the Philippians. As modern readers, we know the rest of this letter will hold both caution and affection. But this beautiful opening reveals the heart and intent behind Paul’s words. We see in these verses how godly relationships work when they are anchored in love for the gospel; there is push and pull, earnest prayer, and deep care for one other’s true well-being and spiritual growth.

Paul had a history with the Philippians, and it is on this rich foundation that he built this really beautiful letter. In Acts 16, we see that when Paul first went to Philippi, a woman called Lydia was converted to faith, and then she and her family invited Paul to stay with them. Their generous hospitality was marked by open ears, open hearts, and open homes.

Later in the chapter, Paul and Silas were arrested, and in the end, the Lord delivered them from prison. However, during their imprisonment, one of their jailers became a believer and also welcomed Paul and Silas to his home: “He brought them into his house, set a meal before them, and rejoiced because he had come to believe in God with his entire household” (Acts 16:34).

As I write, I see the faces of those believers who I know I can cling to with the same godly affection Paul has for the Philippians, who balance their love for me with their desire for me to grow more like Jesus every day. They aren’t afraid to whisper (or shout) rebuke in love, and they bathe their strong words in prayer for my sanctification. These people have partnered with me in the hard work of sharing the gospel with a world that has become increasingly hostile toward it.

I am so thankful for these friends, and today I pray for them in the same way Paul prayed for his friends in Philippi: “that [their] love will keep on growing in knowledge and every kind of discernment,” and that they would “be pure and blameless in the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ to the glory and praise of God” (Philippians 1:9–11).

    Paul and Silas are a great example of the depths we should go personally to share and spread the gospel to all

    It’s so amazing that no matter where we are, we are united by the Holy Ghost in the love of Christ where we can pray for one another help one another and care for one another and encourage each other to spread the gospel to this lost and broken world. Where they can see Jesus in us, and know that just as He saved us and gave us life, He can do the same for the.

    On the note of mental health, I was listening to medical podcasts to gain knowledge to combat these issues. There is a direct impact between gut health and mental health. They did an experiment, by transferring some gut microbiomes from patients with schizophrenia onto healthy lab rats, and the rats start to have schizophrenia as well. Fitness also has direct impact with mental health. So while building up the inner man is important, taking care of the outer man/ our body will influence how we worship God. I heard this from Joyce Meyer and she would go on a treadmill. The key is not to think about it, and just do it (overthinking can lead to double mindedness.. ouch). Father, I lift up our sisters and their families in prayers. We take authority in the Name of Jesus and we break any unclean spirits behind the demonic fears, torment, insecurities, anxiety, depression, mental illnesses, etc. we claim joy and peace for our mind, strength and good health for our body. Lord we pray for wisdom, knowledge to eat healthy and remain health, to take care of our body and our mind. We pray for your grace to cover those who are sick and facing medical issues that they might recover and be strengthened to their tip top shape. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.

    Me and some of my church friends memorized Philippians one summer. So many of the verses (and what comes next) have been coming back to me. I think I will tackle this memorization again, and feel like I would be better equipped to be successful in my memorization and also be better equipped to take in the context of this letter from Paul since we are studying it here. Please pray I can do it! (Older brains aren’t as good at memorizing… can anyone relate?)

    My thyroid ultrasound and some other tests were fine (other than the low iron that I’ve been addressing with an iron supplement for about a month). It is really making me think I’m crazy. If it is anxiety related, please pray that any anxiety subsides. (On a side note… I don’t FEEL anxious at all.)

    1. Tricia C says:

      Adrienne,
      I’m grateful to hear that your test results came back ok. I will tell you that I take organic desiccated liver in a capsule. It has made a huge difference in my iron levels. That iron supplement that often is prescribed does not really do anything. I’d try the liver. It doesn’t taste like liver. It’s in a capsule so really tastes like nothing.

    I was reading through this action packed chapter, and the heart of God was the shining light throughout this whole thing. This part really stood out, “He drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled”. According to the Roman law, if a prisoner escaped, the jailer who had him in charge was compelled to suffer the penalty which was to have been inflicted on the prisoner. This accounts for the despair of the jailer in this case. He preferred death by his own hands to the death by torture, which probably awaited some of the condemned prisoners whom he supposed to have escaped. A reference from an online source. If I was in Paul’s situation, would I just run out and leave? I wondered what truly happened, did the Lord tell Paul to sit still when the common sense is to walk out? He must have. They loved not their life unto death, but lingered to save the life of the jailer. The heart of God is so beautiful, to turn things around so the abusee can save the abuser.

    Lifting prayers up to our JEHOVAH NISSI:
    @A WALTON: healing, recovery over your mother and effective treatment be given.
    @MICHELLE P: so sorry about the car accident, praying you will recover from the shock of it, and may the Lord grant you favor in getting a new vehicle through compensation.
    @BRANDI: over Aven Grace that the tumor be completely dissolved in Jesus’ Name, strength and hope for the family in the Lord.
    @LAUREN GW: my heart really breaks hearing this, praying for a safe place that your husband can retreat to and for God’s hand to undo, uproot and pull out all the yucky things that his mind has witnessed and held on to, and a safe place for you and the kids to heal from the second hand ptsd he passed down. It takes time but it is possible.
    @SHARON JG: Tom’s family to be covered in God’s comfort and strength.
    @KELLY (NEO): good adjusting for new staff and successful training.
    @TINA: hugs and much love across the pond. Please keep your letters coming. Yours ever friend.
    Be blessed dear sisters.

      Thank you for your prayers.

    Hello Shes
    What gets me – and I learned this in listening to the SRT podcast yesterday – is that Paul was writing this letter to the Philippians TEN years after he founded it. Of course there was correspondence in some form during the intervening years- but my goodness, the tenacity of heart shown here. The faithfulness, the devotion, the allegiance, the tender compassion…!!
    As Rachel & Amanda noted: a letter saturated with joy & profound confidence. While the were 10 years old, they were still, and ever, his children. Remember your ten year old self! Think on a ten year old in your family of acquaintances! Saved or in the need of saving!
    Thank Him for His generosity & put faith into action.

  15. Cee Gee says:

    I was looking for the VBS song that helped us memorize Philippians 1:6. I haven’t found it yet, but found this old song by Steve Green. I don’t remember it, but the words are comforting.
    Steve GREENS HE WHO BEGAN A GOOD WORK IN YOU SONG LYRICS:
    “Chorus:
    He who began a good work in you
    He who began a good work in you
    Will be faithful to complete it
    He’ll be faithful to complete it
    He who started the work
    Will be faithful to complete it in you

    If the struggle you’re facing
    Is slowly replacing your hope
    With despair
    Or the process is long
    And you’re losing your song
    In the night
    You can be sure that the Lord
    Has His hand on you
    Safe and secure
    He will never abandon you
    You are His treasure
    And He finds His pleasure in you

    Repeat Chorus
    ———————————-

    Christs work in you: Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus, Philippians 1:6”

    1. R says:

      Cee Gee: I truly from my heart thank you for the song from Steve Green as for me ” the process is long and I’m losing my song in the night” . I’ve been reading in this community for 5 years but have never commented , but your post caused such a renewing of my faith that I had to say thank you!!!

      1. Rhonda J. says:

        I love that R, that you were touched today and that you have been here with us for 5 years!! :)

      2. Cee Gee says:

        R – you don’t know how much your comment means to me! God bless you for leaving your comfort zone to share that with me! THANK YOU for blessing my heart!!! I hope now you will feel comfortable doing so more often. Love and prayers! ❤

    Hello, it has been awhile since I have written.

    My mom has been sick with C- Diff and needs healing. She has had it 6 times. It keeps coming back. I feel the drs are just getting her the same antibiotic, which isn’t working, and are super slow at getting her a different treatment. She is losing weight and didn’t have much to lose in the first place. I would appreciate your prayers for her. Thanks so much.

    1. Cee Gee says:

      A Walton – so good to hear from you! Prayers for compassion and wisdom on the part of your mom’s medical team! Please keep us posted and update on your house situation when you can. Apologies if you have done that and I missed it!❤

    2. Victoria E says:

      A Walton I will be praying for your mom and her doctors.

    3. Portia Dunaway says:

      Have you consulted with an infectious disease doctor? My dad experienced the same thing. In and out of hospitals every couple months. He was able to do the Vowst treatment in July. So far he has had 3 good months without a bout of it.

  17. Michelle P says:

    Hello! I posted this on FB and am reposting it here:

    Hi Shes. I’m actually on a Facebook fast, but I logged in very briefly to share a picture of what happened yesterday with our group and ask for prayer requests.

    My car was totalled while I was working yesterday (I do grocery delivery part time, I was on my way to the store when it happened). I was rear ended. The good news (God moment) is that a volunteer fire fighter was driving behind me and was on the scene almost immediately after it happened and notified the police.
    I’ve never been in this kind of accident… def have played bumper cars with others, but my glass completely shattered and my face and chest hit the steering wheel. Very scary. It was a big pick up truck, they only have slight bumper damage.

    I use my vehicle for work, so I’m really sad about losing it. It was paid off, thank God, but I don’t have any money saved for a new car. The insurance will give me what it is worth… but it had almost 190,000 miles on it… so I can’t imagine it will be much. It is also a 2009 Pontiac (they are no longer on market).

    I am picking up a rental car later today, my insurance almost covers that. I pay a few dollars a day – up to 30 days. Thankful I can do my delivery job still, with that, and get to the cafe on the days I am scheduled there.

    Please pray for the Lord to help me remain calm and trust Him with finances. I have been in a season of financial testing for a few years now. This car has definitely played a huge part in that. I know God is with me, I don’t want to be afraid of the future.

    Thank you so much ❤️

    1. Cee Gee says:

      Oh, Michelle, I just praise God you are OK. He will take care of the car! Certainly the one who caused the damage will be liable to some extent. So glad God provided a first responder close by! Praying for your anxiety through this! ❤

      1. Rhonda J. says:

        Yes..I am so sorry too Michelle!! How awful, but so glad you are okay!!! I pray you feel okay in your neck from the whiplash it causes! And I KNOW GOD will help you in BIG WAYS!!! Trust! Big HUGS that you are okay!!

    2. Adrienne says:

      Dearest Michelle… I just want to say, “Eeeek!” Praying for you (glad you’re ok!) and all the issues that surround this accident.

    3. Theresa says:

      Praying for you Michelle. Believing that God will provide the perfect solution for your car and that He is using this situation for your good and His glory. Thankful you are ok!

    4. Victoria E says:

      Michelle, praise God that you are ok! I will be praying for your finances.

    5. Mari V says:

      Oh…Michelle…I knew there was a reason why I felt compelled to came back to the comments here on SRT. I’m so sorry to hear about your accident, BUT so grateful YOU are OK! Michelle……God WILL provide!! When my old 1997 Camry (had just reached 300,000 miles) was totaled, God provided a nice CRV for me then a year later I was struck from behind totaling my car again (remember me tell you all the incident) and I was devastated, BUT GOD… My JESUS provided an even better and newer CRV! WE here at SRT are trusting GOD will provide for you!

      1. Michelle P says:

        Thank you for sharing the testimony!!! Thank you so much!

  18. Kris says:

    The verse that stands out to me is Philippians 1:6. There are days/weeks when I feel I’m not making any progress at all. But when I read that I can be sure that God is going to complete the work He started in me, I can be sure that even when it doesn’t look/feel like it, He has not given up on me. He is still FOR me, He is still rooting for me, He is still guiding and leading and doing things behind the scenes. I’m grateful for that. On the days when I’m too weary to do anything, He is still holding me up.

    1. Cee Gee says:

      Kris, that was our memory verse for VBS a few years ago. There was a cute song that helped us memorize it. Part of it still rumbles through my brain. I am in week 3 of Revelation by Jen Wilkin. One of the things she highlighted for session 2 is that even now, Christ is ruling and reigning over all. We know that yet…

    2. Gwineth52 says:

      Hold on, dear Kris. Because He always does.

    3. Tami says:

      I get it Kris. Thank you for highlighting that verse! He is always at work in me, even when I don’t see it!

  19. Cee Gee says:

    You ladies bless me so with your incredible gift with words! I struggle so to get my basic thoughts in a readable sequence!
    ~~~~
    I am hopping on the bandwagon of thanks and praise here! I feel closer to y’all than most I see in person. That’s the spirit we see Paul so often encouraging his readers to have.
    ~~~~
    I will be pondering what a letter from Paul to She Reads Truth would say! Then, I will make that personal. What kind of witness am I portraying? Is anyone impacted for good by my example? Good, really good thoughts to align my mind.
    ~~~~
    Praying for your needs- spiritual, physical, and emotional. ❤
    1. Rhonda J. says:
      I struggle with writing my thoughts in a readable way as well..but it’s okay, because we each touch people just when God needs us to with our words and prayers! Now out loud prayers…ugh..still get so caught up in not speaking well!! (Moses’s syndrome!! Which is okay too!!)
      I just remember that I love Jesus and my walk with him, that I just have to let that overflow to others!!
  20. Kimberly Z says:
    Such a great reminder today! As I was leaving dinner last night with a friend we had a ton of left over pizza. Neither of us wanted it so I said I’ll take it and see if anybody was sitting outside the crisis center on my way home. These people are typical homeless so they’re usually grateful for anything. On my way I passed the tumbleweed building which is a service for homeless youth. I noticed some tents out front either two girls sitting there. I slowly pulled over and got out to offer them pizza. They were hesitant (I would have been too haha) but took the pizza. Two other kids quickly came over and they all shared the box of pizza. It wasn’t much but I hope that small act ripples into something bigger for them. We are so loved by our Heavenly Father.
  21. Cheryl Blow says:
    As always, you have blessed me with your thoughts, prayers,& insights!
    Praying for Gods word to take root in our hearts and bring forth fruit in our lives and the lives of those we encounter! May we abound in His knowledge and grace! Whether we are in a difficult place or a mountain top may we be able to sing praise to God like Paul and Silas! And may many come to know Jesus because of the fruit we bear!
    Praying for all! Keep up the good fight of faith!
  22. Jacqueline Regier says:
    Wonderful reminder to pray for those who I’ve labored with in the past—some are going through serious trials right now. Praying for joy and peace in the midst.
  23. Rhonda J. says:
    GM She’s!
    Oh how I love this section of Acts! I refer to it a lot in my letter to my jail ladies, and also at homeless ministry because they are often broken and filled with discouragement! I tell them how Paul and Silas had been beaten, scourged and shackled put in prison..again. And what did they do…did they complain, drown in their misery?? NO, they Praised God! They didn’t let discouragement, fear, or anxiety take over and get the best of them….they Sang and Worshipped in their pain and affliction! And God tore the prison walls down!! And because of their great belief shocking everyone around them and the jailer, the jailer believed!! It is an amazing testimony, and a great one to share when trying to encourage others! Funny side note- This story is also in our “Giant Killers” book which I tell them…well I wondered why some of my letters had “not been delivered!” Come to find out you can’t use words like “killers,” “escape” “preaching to the guards” and so on in letters to inmates!! lol.
    I usually end up closing my prayers in a blanket please of Lord, just draw these people close to you…in their trials, troubles, praises and all! Because really it is all that matters.
  24. GramsieSue says:
    Each year I’ve been getting hand prints of all my grands (all 10 of them ❤️). I add a verse with each print to pray over each of them for the year.
    This year I made a booklet for them and on the first page this was one of the verses I penned to pray over all of them. Such a blessing! ❤️
    1. Rhonda J. says:
      How beautiful is that!! And what a blessing—10 grandkids!
    2. Gwineth52 says:
  33. Aimee D-R says:
    Lord thank You for the gift of friends and loved ones. Open my heart to others always. In Jesus name, Amen
  34. Laura says:
    This section of scripture is so encouraging, so beautiful. The love that Paul has for his friends is touching and also convicting. Paul often comes across as harsh, to the point, not mincing words. But here we see his deep and affectionate love for these members. It really touched me this morning.
    Another thing that I noticed yesterday and now today is that those who were baptized were baptized with their whole family. How cool is that? Lydia and then the jailer. It encourages me so much that one day MY whole family too will be baptized and following the Lord together!
  35. Kate K says:
    I don’t always post every morning, but I am usually here, reading through prayer requests and looking forward to seeing stories and encouragement from others. Thank you all for this community.
  36. Searching says:
    My heart is full from reading these verses. I try to make a point of remembering the lost in my life & their need for salvation as I pray for other needs in their lives. But I still catch myself too often focusing on their earthly needs and forgetting about their urgent spiritual needs. Lord, please guide my focus as I bring the needs of my people to you.
    .
    LAUREN GW ❤️ praying fervently for your husband! For safety, for protection, for healing, for the assistance y’all have sought that he needs more each day. Praying for you and your children as you cope with his absence, praying for local support as we lift your family up in prayer.
    .
    NEW SRT SISTERS – welcome! Love seeing these new names ❤️
    1. Michelle P says:
      Thank you, sister ❤️
  37. Kathy says:
    I found great encouragement in verse 6. “I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Two things give me encouragement: God IS doing a good work in me and He won’t stop until He’s finished and calls me home.
    I am challenged to pray for others like Paul did. I need to pray as much for the spiritual needs and growth of those on my prayer list as I do praying for health, comfort, family issues… which I need to pray for, but I should always pray first for their growth in knowledge and discernment “so that (they) may approve the things that are superior and may be pure and blameless in the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ to the glory and praise of God.” (10-11)
    1. searching says:
      Amen!
    2. Tricia C says:
      Yes, this. I think we often are quick to pray for peoples physical needs, but don’t pray for their spiritual needs. I also need to remember to pray for their spiritual needs. Thank you for sharing Kathy.
    3. Sharon, Jersey Girl says:
      ❤️
      Some time ago I began to make it a habit to use Paul’s prayers as I pray for my family and church family.
    4. Donna Wolcott says:
      Amen.
  38. Sally B. says:
    I always find myself convicted by Paul’s eloquent prayers for his friends’ spiritual needs and growth, here and especially in Ephesians. I find my prayer list looks way more like friends and family’s health needs or job needs or children’s issues…so many temporal things it crowds out the eternal things. Father, help me remember what is most important to bring before You for my friends, family and a world, as Melanie reminds us, that is becoming increasingly hostile to the gospel! Amen.
  39. Jo Turnbull says:
    I find it so hard to read these verses and feel the huge difference from my own heart. I DO NOT thank the Lord every time I remember the folk in our fellowship. Most of the time it’s more like moses crying out to God ‘why have you lumbered me with these grumbling people’. It’s obvious from the rest of Paul’s books that the people he were writing to were just as flawed and not miraculously loveable. So I pray that God would change my heart to those in our fellowship so this prayer could be true!
    1. Searching says:
      Amen!
    2. Sharon, Jersey Girl says:
      Jo, I am so sorry you are feeling this way. It can be very hard to love those who do nothing but murmur and complain. But as Tina would say…But God. We can love them through His eyes. We are all flawed and broken, it is only with the help of the Spirit that we can learn to love – even those who are most unlovable.
      Praying along with you that God would change your heart toward those in your fellowship. ❤️
    3. Kat D says:
      And may I/we not be those grumbling people, but feel the love and encouragement to open our eyes and ears in joy to the good news of the gospel.
  40. Tina says:
    When I was at boarding school, my father wrote to me every week. I so looked forward to his letters, truly encouraging and loving, letters from home..always signed..Yours ever, Daddy.
    My heart sings, as the tears flow at this memory, no longer a practice..
    But that is okay, because the memory is a remberance of his words, his love his humour and wit, his larger than life smile that did light up my life, for sure.. I was and am still being blessed for having had this wonderful man for my Daddy here on earth..
    Thank you Father God, Thank you.
    .
    BUT GOD..
    .
    I thank my God for each and every one of you, dear SRT sisters, every time I think of you; I pray with joy and Thanksgiving in my every prayer, because of the bond we have in the love of the Gospel. I think it actually goes beyond that, we have become sisters and dear friends from afar, though, we have never met..! How awesome is that!
    I cannot imagine days when I do not touch base, here, to feel the love and encouragement from one to another.. and like Paul says..”… because I have you in my heart”.
    We partner each other in grace, love, encouragement, prayer and the hope of ‘one day ‘
    I pray now, as we delve into this study, that we will grow some more in the knowledge of what we already have stored in our hearts, and grow more and more each day like Christ, pure and blameless, and filled with the fruit(of the Spirit) of righteousness ( faith) that comes through Jesus Christ to the Glory and praise of our Father God..
    .
    I do not write this on paper, with strokes carrying love with each word, true, but, rest, assured the prayer and thoughts are the same, from my heart..♥️
    .
    Praying your day is blessed and covered in much love and hugs, dear sisters in Christ.♥️
      Dear TINA – echoing your prayers for our sisters here, and your thankfulness for this community – the partnering as we seek a closer relationship with our Lord together, and the sisterhood we have to share joys, praises, concerns, needs and troubles.
      TINA, what beautiful imagery! I actually saw – in my mind – an elegant hand moving swiftly across the page as you write on paper filling it with your beautiful words of encouragement. Thank you! I, too, echo your words about our sisters here – those we have shared life with for a while and those we are just meeting. Thank you, Father, for my sisters here and please bless our time together daily. Adding my amen to your prayer, Tina. ❤
