This Is the New Testament is part of a twelve-week thematic overview of the entire Bible. As we read, we’ll gain a broader understanding of the redemptive story of Scripture. Each day we’ll read a thematic selection from a different book of the Bible, along with supplemental passages that show how the theme of that day’s main reading is found throughout Scripture. We’ll also read a brief summary of each book and a reflection on how the book fits into the larger story of Scripture. This week, we move from the Gospels and Acts into the Pauline Epistles.
The Book of Romans: Romans is a letter written by Paul to Jewish and Gentile Christians in Rome. In it, Paul offered clarity on the source of salvation and righteousness, and he encouraged unity among Christians from all backgrounds.
How Romans Fits into the Story: The book of Romans highlights the effect of sin on all of creation. Romans includes a detailed explanation, unlike any other in the Bible, for why righteousness can only come through grace by faith in Jesus Christ. It also emphasizes the power of the cross and how it changes us—from sinners worthy of God’s punishment to His beloved children—and calls us to live in eager anticipation of Jesus’s return.

The differnce between unrighteousness and righteouness is. Unrighteouness is going againist God’s word and truth also wisdom to be sinful. Righteouness is being explained in Romans 3:21-22-26 saying that righteouness us given through our faith in Christ Jesus to all who believe in Him. We got to genuinely fully believe in what Christ did for us on the cross, and walk in faith with Him.

Happy Monday shes. So yesterday, while many people gathered to watch the FIFA World Cup final, I was locked out. I didn’t have a TSN subscription, and every free streaming site I tried sadly failed lol. Everything is licensed, copyrighted, and monetized these days. No pay, no access. And this morning, the phrase “access by faith” jumped out at me loudly lol, praise the LORD (“through Him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand” Romans 5:2). It made me pause and rejoice. We have access by faith to GOD, not by subscription, not by title, but simply by faith. Can we afford it? Absolutely. So faith comes by hearing and hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:17). When we read Scripture out loud and truly hear it, we gain access to His righteousness in our hearing (the gateway), to His mercy, and unending grace through these rich promises.

1. After reading today’s passages, how would you describe the difference between unrighteousness and God’s true righteousness? Proverbs 14:12 immediately popped into my mind, “There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death”. Modern unrighteousness rarely looks wicked. Sin rarely announces itself, it comes dressed up in glamour, sophistication and elegance (seeming reasonable, justified to the human mind). But sin is anything and everything out of alignment with God’s character and will. A person can be confident that they are doing the right thing, but apart from GOD, that is just foolishness and futile. The culture “follow your heart” has led many astray, because Jeremiah 17:9 tells us that the heart is deceitful and wicked above all things. Following our desires without submitting to the truth leads to a destructive illusion of “finally happy”. Even the ideas of blessings, prosperity, and wealth can trick us into thinking we are right with God. Guard our thoughts. Mirror with the Word. Jesus said, “Blessed are those who are persecuted”. Things are not always what they seem. True blessing isn’t measured by wealth and smooth sailing, but it is written, blessing is marked by endurance through trial. persecution, mourning, meekness, thirst and hunger (strong desires) for justice, heart purity, etc. (the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-12). Things are not always what they seem. There will always be “a way that appears right”, so make sure we measure all things against the Word. May we seek the godly guidance, “Where no wise guidance is, the people fall, but in the multitude of counselors there is safety.” Proverbs 11:14. Community of wise counsellors is so crucial. I love our SRT shes for the many sweet counselling that have been offered in many situations.

2. How does today’s reading shape your understanding of the story of redemption? Redemption depends on faith. And where is faith? Faith comes by hearing the Word of God for us. What if we don’t understand faith? Look at the thief on the cross (Luke 23:39-43), no theological training, no bible study. All he did was a true recognition that Jesus was an innocent man, the Son of God, and he asked Jesus, “remember me” earnestly, and Jesus extended access, “Today you will be with me in paradise”. No delay. No probation period for correct doctrine. That’s redemption. Faith in Christ! What a powerful access. (Note: The thief had no time. But we have time to study until the Lord returns. Don’t skip bible study, we must do our diligence in being vigilant in our learning because satan is a master mind of counterfeit, if we don’t know the real thing, we have no chance spotting a counterfeit, imagine spot the difference game).

I haven’t read through the entire devotional this morning. But I will. My daughter and I are heading out to Pacifica soon. But I wanted to hop on here to please pray for my son Caleb. He leaves this morning to start living in San Francisco. He moved most of us belongings on Saturday. He starts his new job on Tuesday. Please pray for his safety, his surroundings. He will also be looking for a new church. As I mentioned yesterday, they prayed over him. And it was beautiful to see the outpour of the grown adults, giving him ideas of some local churches out there.

We just said our goodbyes to him less than two hours ago.
Hello She’s! I had a hard time keeping up last week and didn’t take the time to give you all an update on Debbie. After the terrible car accident she was in, she has been in the ICU – BUT, praise God, she gets to move to a rehabilitation facility closer to home this week. Continued prayers for her as she continues to heal, adjusts to life as an amputee, and continues in her faith journey through all of this. Prayers for her husband, Mark, are also appreciated as he is simply exhausted from the trips back and forth to the hospital and still trying to work.

Righteousness and grace are things I can’t explain but we don’t earn them. Let alone deserve.

Unrighteousness is going against God’s word and wisdom to sin. Righteousness is explained in Romans 3:22-26, we will find it in our faith in Jesus to all who believe.
2. How does today’s reading shape your understanding of the story of redemption?
We have to believe in our God and Jesus. We have to be faithful.
I am trying to impute this truth into my heart and mind, we are justified freely(we are no longer guilty before a righteous Judge) by his grace( a free undeserved gift). We are redeemed, bought with a price( Jesus are substitute sacrifice) we are no longer slaves to sin, the world, and the devil. Jesus has said us free and we are free indeed. We have peace with God. Help me Jesus to share this truth.
You did good at saying it! I am not good at summerizing, and making it make sense when talking to an unbeliever, but the more we try it does get more comfortable. God’s word never returns void. Once about 5 years ago, I really wanted to start the conversation with my nephew who is not a believer. It went awful! lol. It ended with me so frustrated and crying, lol. But I still to this day keep serving up God’s word to him. He is the one in prison now…so the funny thing is….I can write my monologue on Jesus and he can’t interrupt!! lol! He never answers back, but he reads them! :) It’s awesome!!

Why then is there so much divisions among the churches? Why are people fighting with each other – not willing to repent, holding onto bitterness and grievances? This is going on in our churches today. I keep hearing about it more and more and I don’t understand. How is any of that showing the love of God that has been poured into hearts?

Life is to short. We need to be living our best life, our life in Christ, now. Not tomorrow, next week or next year. It starts with us.

Love one another as Christ loves us. God loved us so much, He demonstrated it by sending Christ to die for us – while we were still sinners. Let us then love one another.

Sharon, that is so true about the churches. Ours has experienced that. All of a sudden our pastor was gone. The congregation was not aware that there were issues. Six Godly men could not agree on the direction and mission of the church. How does that happen? They said there was no need for reconciliation because they had love for one another?? Lots of questions!!!❓

Romans reminded me that unrighteousness is living apart from God, while true righteousness is found only through faith in Christ. It isn’t something we achieve, it’s something God graciously gives!
Today’s reading also shaped my understanding of redemption by reminding me that we are saved by grace, not by our own efforts. Through Jesus, God offers the righteousness we could never earn on our own.
Definitely digging in to Roman’s 5:10-11 today.
“For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.”

Here we get Paul’s long winded sentences, which I hate, but I do as well. (laughing face!) I’m like…what did he just say??!
Romans is gold. We learn the head knowledge is great, but do we apply it? Do we practice what we preach? We learn ONLY Jesus can bring us into Righteousness, right standing with God. We are filthy rags on our own.
It’s not hard to look at the world today and see what no faith looks like. Even in the US, that used to clearly be a Christian nation as I was growing up, we don’t see much evidence today. It saddens me, but it also propels me to keep sharing, keep loving, keep reaching out. There are so many hurting people, especially the younger generation lost in depression and anxiety. If all the people that fill churches on Sundays, truly lived our faith out loud, Shined our light, talked to the unbelievers…it could and would make such an impact. But many just don’t look that different in their week at work or even in their families.
Lord, help us to truly reflect the love you have for us. When we receive it, it should overflow in us. That people see something different. Help us to forgive quickly, to love strongly, to go and preach and minister. Let us want to be your hands and feet. Give us divine encounters Lord. (just like yesterday that I shared!) You want action on our part Lord. The step forward that says Yes, Lord use me! It is not comfortable, but that makes us know it’s YOU Lord, not ME!! We are praying in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Yeah, I don’t know how we managed to get so corrupt, but we did. I’m not gonna go sharing my religion, knowing that they might believe in something else. I keep it a secret so that I don’t force it on anyone out of respect.
Sharing is not forcing. We are not sharing a religion we are sharing Jesus, and people need to know, have to know it is the ONLY way to heaven! That is the whole commission! Not to keep to ourselves. Would you not share a cancer cure if you knew it?! If we know Jesus it is too good not to be passionate about it.

Unrighteousness can be so surface level; appearing to be doing the right thing, following rules and laws out of obligation but not being truly changed or vested in caring what the outcome is in any way. True righteousness is genuine, intentional and transformations our hearts. Its pursing the Father heart of God with the understanding that its part of the redemption we need in our lives and should seek to share with others so they too can know Jesus.

Romans is one of my favorite books in the Bible! So much knowledge and wisdom that reminds me of why we needed Jesus back then and why we need Him now!!
Based on today’s reading, unrighteousness is pretending and claiming to know what is true in what we say, but not living to match the words. Where God’s true righteousness is admitting our sin, recognizing we can’t save ourselves by living perfectly, and accepting the gift of salvation provided by Jesus life, death, and resurrection.

But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

The verses in Romans 2 are calling out the Jewish people who are living a ‘do as I say, not as I do’ lifestyle, and wow, don’t I do the same thing at times? Lord, help me to see my words and actions as they are, not as I distort or justify them in my mind.

I’ve read Romans 5 many times but today I had to read Romans 5:3 again … tribulation produces hope. What?! Are we glorying in tribulations? Why not? They teach us perseverance and character, leading to hope. Gotta work on this …
And then verse 10 reminds us of the unimaginable work of God through the sacrifice of His Son for our sinful selves, and the glory of Jesus’ resurrection, hallelujah! So much thankfulness every day for this.
V 10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.

The line from Isaiah 19 “And His glory from the rising of the sun” reminded me of Forever, by Chris Tomlin (writers Brian Kennedy Seals, Jamal F. Jones, Andre Darrell Merritt, Christopher Maurice Brown, Robert L. Allen), love the lyrics in this song … His love endures forever.
“tribulation produces hope” -amen sister, what a gem you pointed out. Tribulation also produces grief and frustration that our human’s brain tends to focus on, without the Word we are truly blind and deep in the pit of despair, aren’t we? A lot of renewing the mind to build strength for sure.
Without a heart surrendered to Jesus and transformed by His grace, anything we do to “obey” God’s law falls short because our actions and attitudes are corrupt. This is what God calls unrighteousness.

Today’s reading spells out the whole reason we are in desperate need of redemption!

This verse is so very true and there is noone better to reassure us of this than Paul! His background and history, I am not judging.. but by golly, if HE understands the righteousness of God in his life, we ought to as well.
Let’s face it, his sin was, in our book far worse than ours, he knew it, and yet, he now, after his encounter with Jesus on the Damascus road, also knew he had a second chance at getting his life right with God..

I am always inspired by his story.. as a sinner, it is only by the grace of God and the gift of His Son Jesus, that I get to stand today clothed and covered in His righteousness and love.. not perfect but capable of understanding my worth in Him, and living my life accordingly to the best of my ability for His Glory.

For all have fallen short of the glory of God, we are justified by faith and by His grace through the redemption that is in Jesus Christ our Savior.
And yes Paul, if he can forgiven, we certainly can also. If God can change and use a person like Paul, we need not question if we too repent, and turn, can be used by God also.
