Luke 6:46-49

This week, as a community, we’d like to pause between plans and refresh the way rhythms we use to read God’s Word. Join us as we dig into some familiar (or not so familiar) pieces of scripture and seek our Father together by reading and processing this truth.

Today’s passage is Luke 6:46-49

First, let’s pray. Ask the Lord to open your heart and your mind and to help you focus on Him. Confess the things that might be keeping you from really truly experiencing His presence and submit your time to His will.

Second, let’s read Truth! Take your time and see what catches your attention. Make notes of what impresses you and moves you. Try to see the whole picture of what the passage is conveying. What does it say about God?

Next, reflect on what He’s saying. What does this passage mean for you and for the body of Christ? Is there anything you feel like He is personally communicating to you for your exact season, situation, or circumstance?

Lastly, let’s respond. Prayerfully and humbly, see what’s next. What do you need to do in light of what you’ve read? How will it affect your day, your life, and your walk with the Lord?

And as always, feel free to share with us in the comments below!
It is our joy to read Truth with you all.

  2. This passage spoke volumes to me today, about how I'm approaching some new opportunities I've been given. I've been living in a growing period of "wait" for a few years, so to have God give me a green light (much less a couple of them), is exciting! I haven't embarked on either yet– one is an internship, and the other an area of interest/study– but I'm realizing how strong a desire I have to "build" not only myself, but both of these opportunities on the Rock. Many times we hold those things back from God (I know I have), our areas of interest, or our jobs. I truly believe these years of waiting and healing were intentional, so I would know that whatever God entrusts me with is also meant to be built on Him as a foundation.

“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord, and do not do what I say?” Wow, how sadly true this so often is in my life I cry out to God and I tell him that I love and believe in him. But then I proceed to cringe when he challenges me. When he tells me to dig deeper, I think about all the sweat and work that will go into this. Sometimes I desire to simply build a house on the beach and be comfortable but I know that is not what God has called us to do. I really love this song. It talks about how we could simply sit but “God has called us higher and God has called us deeper.” Its hard but oh man what joy comes from truly seeking the Lord.

Today may you set sail to do the work that Christ has called you. Knowing that the true lighthouse of God’s light will always guide your path!

Thank you for the image it is really helpful

  4. Jean says:

In today's newspaper is an article about hurricane preparedness. (I live in Central Florida.) We know storms will come but it's the foundation that is important. So, we build our foundation on being in His word, prayer, listening, and not answer Yes, Sir, but follow the path… love my neighbor, slow to anger, keep my thoughts on Him, being in community, pray continually, Lord, help me to understand and Obey!

Also, last year there were photos of journals, with highlighting, comments, arrows, underlining in the Bible. I loved seeing those and was the start of me keeping a journal of the verses we cover in SRT and situations in my life that perspective and prayer is needed. I hope SRT can add those periodically for continued inspiration.

God bless you this beautiful day!

    1. LynetW says:

Jean, the Instagram feed has plenty of photos with the types of things you are wanting to see! Check it out on the right side of the column bars!!!

      1. Jean says:

Thanks so much!! I'll check it out. :)

  5. Digging deep. When we go to His word, when we take the time to look up passages, marking them, listening, recalling them through the day as we are doing, God says we are “digging deep”. I love that. I did notice something….He says whoever comes to “me” and hears “my sayings”. I really think this has to do with specifically reading scripture. I love reading and we all probably read many Christian books, which may qualify as “digging” truth, but Jesus is saying, if you want to dig “deep” come to “my sayings”. This is why I love She Reads Truth…it’s putting me back into the red words of Jesus.

  6. Carmen says:

I love you Lord so very much. I want to continue to build a solid foundation by learning and living your Word. Please continue to help me to build my faith in You. Amen

  7. LaurenC_ says:

Lord, let my faith and my life stand on your firm foundation built on hope, trust, and confidence in you always. Amen.

  8. Kara Anne says:

Listening to God is easier said than done, even when we ASK for the help. The scripture says "Why do you call me "Lord, Lord," and not do what I tell you?". When we cry out for help, our compassionate, loving God ALWAYS answers and prompts our next move. But more often than not we choose to ignore it and do it our own way (like teenagers) than truly doing what we know we SHOULD and what God told us to.

Today I pray that before I pray for any prayer or help from my Daddy God, I will be prepared to LISTEN TO HIM and HIS SOLUTION. Just as in Matthew 26:39, just like Jesus submitting to God, even though I might be concerned, fearful or doubtful, I say, NOT AS I WILL BUT AS YOU WILL. Amen.

  9. Jennifer says:

This passage hit me. My roots are not as deep as they need to be. Also this reminded me of a saying I heard a lot growing up and still do. God asks us why we are kind and polite to him but do not do as he asked. We used to say you talk the talk but can you walk the walk. I think at times we also try to just talk the talk with our savior instead of walking the walk we have been asked to do. I have been this way for a long time and have a new goal of making sure that my savior sees me not only talk the talk but walk the walk also. Our savior shows us that our roots and foundations must be deep and strong. Without action and doing what is asked of us this can be hard to do. This was a great passage that I really needed today.

  10. deva says:

I took time away from SRT and something called me to the site today for which I am grateful – I needed to read this passage today about digging DEEP and really digging. It means so much to me and my heart.

  11. AnnaLee says:

Graphics, thanks for the video! :)
I love this, because it shows you what a real, true, intimate relationship with Christ is in your life- an unshakable rock to put absolutely everything on! it reminds me to invest ALL of my life in God, and to give ALL of it to him- if anything is left off the rock, it will perish, just like the foolish builders' house did. Putting God's words into action makes them real, meaningful, and it binds them to our habits and roots as people. It makes His word in our hearts truly alive. It also makes me wise. Having a true, living, personal relationship with Christ makes me confident in trial and in change, because if God and a relationship with Him are the only things that truly matter at the end of the day, it puts everything else into perspective- and we will not be shaken. Lord, I thank you for giving me the chance to have a relationship with you- please help me to remember in my times of temptation and anger at you, how the things in my life that were not based in you were destroyed.
Lord, let there be more and more of you- and only You. I pray that you'd search my heart, soul, and mind for anything in my life that is not based in you or that displeases you, and help me to correct it accordingly for Your will and glory. I love you Lord! You are so good!

  12. Graphics says:

I made a video for Solid Rock a while back and I wanted to share it with you. It seems like this is the theme today. Here is the link http://scripturesquegraphics.com/extras/

    1. Carmen says:

I really enjoyed the video…thanks for sharing!

  13. wiscogurl says:

Building a strong and solid foundation in The Lord is what I desire! I don't want to be a foolish builder who has a home that is weak and collapses with the onset of every storm. Instead, I'm striving for the home that has a foundation that can weather any storm! When I find myself listening it not obeying God it's usually because I fear the social, physical, personal, or professional consequences. Never the spiritual. Lord, help me to always think first of how you would feel if I ever chose to disobey you!

“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”

  14. Stacy says:

The phrase that stuck out to me was, in reference to the wise man, it says he "dug down deep," (vs. 48 NIV.)

I have been a believer for many years. I am so in love with Jesus, y'all. Yet, I am discovering lately, that I often have contented myself with a superficial knowledge. I have been on a diet of Sunday School lessons and other people's interpretations. Recent trials, however, have sent me to the Word with a desire to dig deeper and to know Him more intimately.

My foundation can not be a lifetime of great preaching. My foundation can't be the wisdom of godly professors. I must dig deep and make my foundation in Him alone.

    Happy weekend!

  15. Debbie says:

Hello Ladies. I've been doing the SRT studies for several months now, and haven't really commented much. I want to say now how much I really enjoy reading your comments. I have been so blessed by your insights, your comments and the shared links to web sights and you tube videos. After doing my study, I look so forward to what you all have to say. And I pray for you. Every one of us is in a different place in our lives, both spiritually and physically, and yet it feels as though we are sitting down together with a cup of coffee to chat about our Lord and His word. I pray blessings on each one of you today.

    1. eradical84 (EllenMR) says:

Thank you Debbie! How kind and considerate that you are praying for all of us. I sure appreciate ANY prayers, and may the Lord bless YOU for lifting up SRT and this community today! :)

  16. hundredforever says:

It's amazing the little rainstorms in my life that have destroyed my emotions or strength in Christ.. If I KEEP the rock solid foundation of God under me, I will never ever be washed away.

  17. Cathy says:

The similarities and differences were what stood out to me as I pondered this scripture.

Both build houses. Both have storms.

One digs deep & lays his foundation on the rock.

The other build on the sand, the surface.

As I thought about this in relation to my walk I really began to see some truths come to light for me. The scripture doesn't say anything about what the houses were built WITH, only what they were built ON. Sometimes I do things in my spiritual walk out of duty, obligation, or formality. "Ok, God, I prayed today." "Yes Lord, I go to church every Sunday." As if by checking these things off a list, I will be a strong Christian, I will have a very nice house. These things are things as a growing believer I should do, but not to "build my house" but to "strengthen my foundation".
Digging deep and building your foundation on a rock takes TIME! There is tons of new construction where I live, some is housing and other commercial. The houses seem to go up relatively quickly. They pour foundations on what is already there. It seems like overnight they are framed, and within a month or so we have new neighbors. The commercial property takes far longer. They start by digging a hole. It can take a bit of time before you see any resimblance of a structure. It is going to take time in scripture, meditating, memorizing, and discussing it in order for it to have an impact on my foundation. This time I spend "digging deep" is when I hear what God is calling me to do.

Lord, help me to hear your voice. Despite my fear & laziness help me to respond in obedience. Bring me to the deep places with you. Make my foundation strong & secure, so no matter what storms make come my way I will be able to stand in your truth.

  18. Diana says:

I haven't yet read the comments for today. I read this passage in the ESV and also in the MSG. In the message Jesus said why do you always say "yes sir and no sir", but don't do what I say….. He goes on to say, take my words and build you life on them. Don't just use them for bible studies because if you do you won't be able to stand when the storms of life hit. This is a paraphrase of a paraphrase.

Lord, may I take your words and plant them in my heart so they are a part of me and the foundation of my life. As this world gets crazier may I be able to stand strong thru the storms that come and be a blessing to those around me. Amen

  19. eradical84 (EllenMR) says:

Gosh! Roots, rocks, foundations, streams, rivers, TORRENTS! I'm picking up on a theme here, and without a doubt He is telling me my roots are NOT deep enough! I need to DIG IN to His word, find out more of what I need to learn and know to make my foundation stronger. Impenetrable and solid enough to withstand ANYTHING the enemy or this world throws at me. I've been steady and faithful in my bible time with Him since I returned to Him this past Christmas, but I've been taking such "baby steps" that it's time to put my big girl pants on and really apply and ACT on all the things I've learned through SRT and all of you!!
"But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and ITS DESTRUCTION WAS COMPLETE." v.49 NIV
I'm at the crossroads of Salvation and Destruction. I had better get busy building that foundation.

    1. Melinda says:

Amen, i echo in my heart much of what you said and have seen the same themes and feel similar convictions in my life. Thanks for wording it so well.

    2. darcie says:

accidentally thumbs down, I meant thumbs up lol. I'm in the same boat. No more baby steps.

  20. Candacejo says:

Chonda Pierce does a touching, and of course hilarious, take on this verse from The Message "“Why are you so polite with me, always saying ‘Yes, sir,’ and ‘That’s right, sir,’ but never doing a thing I tell you? These words I speak to you are not mere additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundation words, words to build a life on. (Luke 6:46, 47 MSG)

I never hear this scripture without thinking of this video now! If you have time I know it will bless you, especially if you struggle with fear or doubt. http://youtu.be/hmSg1wY0gso

Not mere additions to your life….got to have them or the whole foundation will crumble!

On Christ the Solid Rock I stand!
All other ground is shifting sand. All other ground is shifting sand.

    1. LeahTvt says:

Thanks for sharing that video, Candacejo! It sure was a blessing to me this a.m.

  21. Paulacw says:

On Christ the solid rock I stand!

    1. Candacejo says:

We were typing the same thought at the same time! :)

    2. hundredforever says:

Ah! Such a good way to remember this verse! "All other ground is sinking sand…"

  22. Linda says:

Thank you ladies for your insights and thoughts today. It really did get me thinking about the scripture. Amykelly yours especially with your knowledge without a relationship idea. The disconnect so many "Christians" have. And that brought two verses to mind (and forgive me because I do not know the address just the idea) but the fact that even the demons know God's word and fear him and paired with the verse that Not everyone who cries Lord, Lord will enter the gates of heaven. Wow. Foolish men with houses on sand. If the demons know and fear God and yet So many of us take it so lightly it's very… I don't even know the word… Disquieting I guess. The knowledge is not the foundation. We think we are laying a solid foundation to our children by having hem memorize verses or telling them Bible stories (and don't get me wrong it all adds to it ) but its the focus on the REAL relationship. The solid having God's Holy Spirit dwelling in your heart and guiding you through life. That constant fellowship and relationship that is the actual foundation. And that is why I feel so many of our children raised in Christian homes fall away from the faith. Their houses crumble in the first storm that comes their way. Humbled. Truly humbled.

  23. rocknitat55 says:

So personal for me this morning. U call me dad, I call U my daughter.

U have witnessed the storm, U have seen the enemy be swallowed up

to return no more. U know that you know But! U still will not do what

I told U. Step up, step out, believe. I got this, I got U.

Isaiah 51:16 And I have put my words in thy mouth, and I have covered thee in the shadow of mine hand, that I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and say unto Zion, Thou art my people.

Father, forgive me this morning for being slothful, for doubting, for having sooo many poor me parties that I ran out of tea. Obedience is better than sacrifice. In Jesus name Amen.

Ladies, I would like if you could remember in prayer a dear friend, her name is Joan. Her husband of 40 years is being buried this morning. She is a christian finding solace in God. Please pray that God

Will fill the void left behind. Blessings SRT.

    1. jesusgirl71 says:

Oo I loved this, Nita! wonderful, at the beginning of your post. will pray for joan.

    2. Carolynmimi says:

Praying for Joan….Thanks for this "Step up, step out, believe"

    3. Diana says:

Stopped to pray for Joan. For God's comfort during this time of grief. I just got thru burying my mom and last year my dad, so my heart goes out to her.

    4. LeahTvt says:

Praying now for your friend, Joan. May God give her comfort & peace.

    5. Saundra says:

I prayed for your precious friend

    6. Jennifer says:

"Having so many poor me parties that I ran out of tea" I love this!!!

  24. mindykim says:

Amen! Jesus asking us this question.. I can't. i don't want to be asked…with this question, honestly, right?
I want to be a good n faithful servant who not only speak His words but also DO them :). We all do.
And these verses give me strong affirmation that if our intention is to wholly serve and do what God commands us to do, we won't be shaken! Wow. A lot of times I experience feelings of shame, contrite and weariness to go through tribulations (both big or small) and that I see myself kneeling and praying to God, sometimes out of those feelings. But He wants us to ask seek and knock with audacious faith having a strong foundation! Ah! It's given to us all who have already declared this life isn't ours but for Him to use for his renown! Praise The Lord! :)

  25. Marie says:

GM LADIES, I am so happy right now. After so many times struggling to read the Word. I actually finished this plan! TGBTG I realize now like never before it was a failed attempt by the lil 1 to get me down. The Word is so refreshing and encouraging and whatever else YOU need it to be for you. I’m so blessed by the richness of His Word. He met me where I am daily. GBU SRT WRITERS AND ALL! I’m even glad there was no commentary since it led me to dive in the Word for myself….To HEAR + DO NOTHING = NO FOUNDATION. I want a foundation that’s pleasing to God! I want Him to know He lean on me. He is the Rock of my salvation! Glory to God! Have a blessed day!

    1. eradical84 (EllenMR) says:

      Congratulations Marie! :)

  26. amykelly213 says:

As I pondered this scripture the thing that hit me most was the wording about the foolish man. When the torrent came, his house fell quickly, immediately, like a house of cards. He has knowledge of God's word, but no relationship with Him. So when trouble comes, this fool does not just fall to sin, he does not hesitate to follow that path of evil. And when he does, it is a "total loss" (MSG). I pray not only for wisdom in Your word, Father, but also for a relationship so secure with You that I am grounded in bedrock and will not sway, shake, or move to temptation. You are my hope and my salvation. Thank you, Lord, for being the contractor for my house. Amen!

    1. Melinda says:

I love that phrase – a relationship with you that I am grounded in bedrock! Amen!

  27. Julia says:

"But anyone who hears and doesn't obey is like a person who builds a house without a foundation." V 49 Sometimes..oftentimes, I feel like that person. It's an uneasy feeling. I would much rather be the person with the solid foundation. Please help me Lord to LISTEN + OBEY.

    1. jesusgirl71 says:

Yes, I, too, feel like that person more times than i want to, more times than not. Amen to this prayer. It is mine as well.

    2. hundredforever says:

Amen! Lord help me to listen and obey, as well. And to fully understand what it is to LISTEN and to OBEY!

  28. claire says:

I feel like I have woken up in the middle of that storm today. I have struggled all week feeling like everything is getting on top of me and, as someone with chronic fatigue, that is never good. Today it got too much and I have had to stay off work to recover. This passage was a much needed reminder to cling to those foundations and trust that God will not let me fall. He is in control. A friend sent me this video this morning and wanted to share it incase anyone else also finds it helpful- clinging to the cross http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pD7z76sMGaw&fe

    1. amykelly213 says:

Claire, I loved that video. Thank you for sharing!! I am praying for you. Dear Lord, grant this precious sister peace from all her struggles. She is clinging to your cross, Lord. Wrap her in your loving arms and let her know she is deeply loved and completely secure from all harm in your warm embrace. Amen. Love you!

    2. rocknitat55 says:

Thank you for sharing the video, it was beautiful.
      Prayn for your restoration.

    3. Candacejo says:

      Thanks, it was timely…

    4. Diana says:

Beautiful video… thank you for sharing. Lord, I pray for Claire. I lift her to you and ask you to give her the strength she needs today. Help her to feel your love and your arms around her, comfort her this day and restore to her the joy of the Lord. I ask this in Jesus name. Amen
