Rebuilding the Walls

Open Your Bible

Nehemiah 3:1-32, Isaiah 58:11-12, Hebrews 6:7-12

I was just a high school cheerleader whose only interests were football players and glitter hairspray when I landed a job at T&G Constructors. With cheer curls and back flips as my only skill set, construction was a less-than-obvious field for me to pursue.

In reality, my friend’s uncle owned the company and I needed a job, so I found myself sending and receiving purchase orders for materials that construction workers needed to complete jobs.

I didn’t know anything about what I was buying, but the boss was really passionate about his work and felt compelled to teach me the ins and outs of things like rebar and acoustical ceilings. Reading Nehemiah 3 today felt a little like listening to the speeches he gave me about the orders I was placing for drywall.

Nehemiah 3 is very tempting to skim over if you’re not into construction logs. It’s a lot of names and a lot of details that can seem cumbersome and boring at first glance. But if you slow down and think about what you’re reading, you’ll notice how beautiful it is that each name and each assignment and each gate represented a small piece in the big picture of what God was doing.

It was not glamorous or exciting. It was tedious. It was laborious. It was obedient. It was beautiful.

They rebuilt the Sheep Gate, the gate through which the sacrificial animals would enter the city—the place where the lambs came through, the ones offered up to atone for sin. What a beautiful foreshadowing of the ultimate Lamb who would later walk through that city to be offered up for our sin: Jesus.

If your life looks like mine, the exciting or glamorous moments are few and far between. Most days, my serving the Lord looks like what Eugene Peterson called “a long obedience in the same direction.” But even though most of life is little acts like changing diapers, organizing purchase orders, scrubbing burnt eggs off the bottom of pans, etc., all those little things are acts of faithfulness and obedience that can point to and prepare the people around us for Jesus.

I thought the speeches my boss at the construction company gave me were boring, but they weren’t boring to him because he was involved in the projects at the job sites from beginning to end. He knew what an order of rebar meant; it meant there would be a beautiful mansion built at the end of the job.

Similarly, Nehemiah gives us details that point to a bigger picture that we get to be part of thanks to Jesus. We are all called to serve in small ways. In small moments. Building gates. Working on walls. And God uses those moments for His Kingdom. What an honor to place a hinge on a gate for the Savior to walk through.

Wow! That last part what an honor it is to put a hinge in the gate, for the savior to walk through! Takes the mustard seed to be planted for the fruit of the spirit to grow.

  2. Joyce Walker says:

Amen so beautiful when explained as she did. All about the meaning of the details.

Sometimes I diminish the little things I do without realizing that those little things are part of how I serve. Even in the mundane, God is working through me to serve others so that He is glorified

  6. Ucobb says:

“He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love” Ephesians 4:16(NLT).
After obtaining the Hand of God upon the work and the Kings favor, it was time to build. Everyone had a part and everyone did their part until it was completed. God has a work for all of us to do. We have talents and gifts that contribute to the maturing of the church as a whole, Jesus bride until we all become mature in the faith growing and growing. We have work to do…. Jesus entrusts us to it and he will equip and help us through the work of the Holy Spirit.

We each have our own part in rebuilding but my take away is we can never do it alone. This is scripture saying, “it takes a village” ❤️

  14. Norma Nashold says:

What a great way to see how the body of Christ can work together to accomplish God’s plan. Also, it struck about the nobles who didn’t do anything. Wow, I have thought about that and was convicted of times when I was not comfortable and so did not do the work, ouch! Praise God! He is rebuilding my heart to get out of the way of myself and to surrender into His will and doing even what makes me uncomfortable. Thank you for the beauty of teaching His Word that renews our minds.

  15. Amanda McKinley says:

I loved reading about how each family or person had a responsibility for a part of the rebuild, but what really stuck out to me was the dad and his daughters being highlighted (Nehemiah 3:12). I just thought it was special that they were still recognized in the efforts, even though they didn’t have the typical “son of” lineage associated with their family. That truly just made me pause because we are all important in the kingdom of God. Sons and Daughters. And how easily that can be forgotten when we can get caught up trying to prove our worth. Our contributions to building the kingdom matter.

  16. Emma White says:

I appreciate the comments and reflection because at first read I wasn’t understanding the importance. Thanks for highlighting the community and the important tasks each person is given to glorify God. It helped me want to go back and read again with a new perspective

  17. Nichole Sells says:

Excellent team work! If different people all play their small parts, so much more can be accomplished. Great examples in today’s reading!

  18. Meagan C says:

May we learn to be content with our role in God’s Kingdom. We don’t need to be the biggest or best – we just need to perform our role to the best of our ability. The rest will work its way out and we will be left with the beautiful complete work of the Father.

My daughter just called me to say that there is an active shooter on the University of North Carolina Wilmington campus. She is safe but scared, of course. And so am I. I am about 1 crisis from an explosion right now, and that was before she called.

    1. Mercy says:

      Praying!

    2. Kelly (NEO) says:

Lord flood Margaret with your peace. Be with those at the University of North Carolina Wilmington campus.

    3. Cee Gee says:

Margaret, I am so sorry you had this to deal with. I just read on FB that lockdown was over. If I had known your daughter was there I would have read on. Thankful she is safe and praying your heart is resting a bit. So scary, but God is with you. ❤ Agreeing with Kelly and praying for all!

      1. Margaret W. says:

There were threats earlier in the day that had supposedly been resolved. That may be what you saw. The University has not done a very good job of communicating with the parents or the students, compared to the schools my older children attended. Not much transparency and a bit of bias, it seems. And there may be more trouble on the way, because Friday’s classes were cancelled. Thanks to all who prayed.

  20. Mindy Hencey says:

I couldn’t agree more with everyone in the reflection of how today’s reading highlights the community effort in rebuilding. Every aspect as important as the next. It’s a reminder for me the importance of community not only in times of rebuilding, but in all facets of our faith walk.

  21. Traci Gendron says:

So my ADD spoke to soon. I went from to day backwards. It all makes sense to me now! All good comments the past few days. Thank you

  22. Traci Gendron says:

I’m not going to mince words. I just got home from a trip last night and was looking forward to catching up with our study. I prayed for understanding and opened up my book only to find my that I felt disappointed. I can’t seem to hold interest in names I can’t pronounce. In repetition. This is going to be a tough study for me.

  23. Tami says:

So many great comments! At first reading this seems so monotonous, like the building of the temple. But with a little digging and reading all of your comments, wow!, today’s reading has been brought to life. God honors any and all work done in His name and we will be remembered for our “work and love demonstrated for the saints in His name”. (Hebrews 6:10) I also love the take away that we are called to rebuild what is right in front of us? Our families, neighbors, work relationships etc. What areas in my life need rebuilding? After losing my brother and dedicating so much time to him and his care, what do I need to do now? What relationships/things have I neglected that I can start to rebuild? In what areas do I need to call others to help me to rebuild? Great thoughts today! Praying for all requests!

  24. Lauren M says:

In today’s reading, I was really moved by the community effort. Each participant was important and accounted for. Nehemiah, the high priests, the Levites, everyone (except the nobles, boo) worked in community, using their individual spiritual gifts in acts of obedience. They couldn’t even fathom the impact these “boring” tasks would have but they stepped out in faith. This reminds me to not just be present in community but to be active in community, using my spiritual gifts and working shoulder to shoulder with my brothers and sisters in Christ.

  25. Mercy says:

It took a whole village to rebuild. I was watching a documentary on Jerusalem yesterday and it was such a small but beautiful city. I did not know it has been built layers upon layers, various foundations, and there was an underground excavation project shown on the video I watched, where they found the gold bells of the priests (24 karat gold) that were at the end of the tassels on the high priest’s garment. I just love this city so much. A verse that stood out, “For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it, and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, and its end is to be burned” (Hebrews 6:7-8). My study bible says, drawing a common agricultural metaphor used in the OT and NT alike, the author warns that those who fall away are like lands that does not bear a crop hat is useful, but only bears thorns and thistles. In a picture impending final judgment and condemnation, the author says that such land is near to being cursed and its end is to be burned. This is a chilling warning, which land does not drink the rain from above? All drinks. God rains on both the just and unjust. The land/soil is a picture of the human heart or life. The “rain” is the repeated grace of God. His Word, His Spirit, His blessings, His truth that keeps falling into our lives. The writer sets it up as only two options, fruitful or worthless. It’s meant to wake us up and highlight the seriousness of ignoring God’s grace. If God’s Word is falling on our hearts, we need to let it produce something useful, like the builders that Nehemiah called to engage with him, love, obedience, good works, faith. Be blessed dear sisters.

I needed a visual of the work and found a great map on kids maps dot com. Just be ready to see pop ups!
The map is simple and easy to read!
    .
Most of my takeaways have been shared, but the biggest stand kut wad what a couple of you mentioned from the SRT Bible. Jesus at Siloam.
    .
Sisters, the work God calls us to is eternal, not temporal.
No matter how mundane, God will use it.
    .
A town I used to live in did a major project in the town park. They put in new landscaping which included beautiful brick pathways. Now citizens didn’t come to lay the bricks, but each person who contributed a certain donation had a brick with their name engraved!
God engraves/blesses our efforts- no matter how small.
    .
    Love, hugs, and prayers! ❤
Adding my prayers and amens to the lists shared earlier! Thank you, Searching, Kelly, and Julia for those! ❤ ❤

  28. Ashley M. says:

My thoughts feom todays reading included 2 simple truths:

    1. No role is too small. Even repairing a gate hinge was recorded in Scripture! In the same way, every act of service we offer—whether leading a ministry, encouraging a friend, or praying quietly—is seen by God.

    2. We build stronger when we build together. The wall could not be completed by Nehemiah alone. The same is true for us: we are called to community, to carry each other’s burdens, and to labor side by side for the sake of Christ.

    1. Cee Gee says:

      Amen! ❤

  29. Adrienne says:

As I was reading,I had two thoughts. First…this accounting reminded me of the many genealogical accounts that we want to skim over. But EVERY person listed is important. (As we are!) Second… it also reminded me of Paul saying in First Corinthians how everyone has a part in the body. EACH PART is important.
    .
I also noticed that the nobles didn’t help. Let me not be like that!

  30. Tanya says:

“Tikkun Olam is a Hebrew phrase meaning “world repair” and is a central concept in Jewish philosphy and practice referring to the responsiblity of humanity to work with God to improve the world through acts of justice and compassion.”

My observations: women participated. Verse 12: ” Beside him Shallum son of Halloshesh, ruler of half the district of Jerusalem, made repairs- he and his daughters.

This was a community effort like the building of the Tabernacle in the bookof Exodus.

    1. Mercy says:

      Yes. Women builders. ❤️

  31. Caitlyn Mae Wagner says:

That last line brought tears to my eyes: What an honor to place a hinge on a gate for the Savior to walk through. Beautiful thought!

  32. Rhonda J. says:

Good Morning She’s! This is one of those passages where it is easy to skim through quickly or skip altogether! But devotionals are so good to shed light as this one….the seemingly small task of the day, or through the “boring” days and weeks ARE getting things done! Motherhood is such a great example. I have Christian stations on all the time that make the humdrum days of cleaning and projects more fun by singing praises, or great podcasts like SRT or The Unfolding. There are so many good ones as Adrienne always shares!

Then, as HRT shares the rebuilding of this great task with everyone contributing is so important. Think of a great city being rebuild, if we heard our names—Tina came with her family and did her area outside her home, then Kelly Neo and her husband came and did the gate of sheep, then Searching build this area, and then CeeGee with her brainpower put up this area with her workers….it made it more relevant to me and how cool it would be!! The She’s putting up the walls!!!
Also I love CeeGee how you reminded me how it was after our huge hurricane Ian right here in my own neighborhood! The anniversary is this month!! It was crazy to wake to the light and see the destruction, but how our neighborhood started working right away to help the worst houses although they were everywhere. All I could do was make PB/j sandwiches to give them food as they were busily working nonstop but BOY WERE they wanted and needed and I would come back and make more and put them in my bike basket and go back out through the impassable. I even started praying for people for the first time in that period!! So God worked tangibly in my faith!! It was a beautiful thing that brokenness and destruction can do wonderful things in us if we let God! I imagine each set of people learned new things such as discipline, discernment, hope, endurance, God’s timing, surrender, and humbleness. God has to tear down many things in our own lives and rebuild. What we think we need and want often he takes away and we realize it is good for us in the long run. As a matter of fact I might put the video I shared at jail ministry yesterday that is about this. If you feel you are broken right now and don’t understand it, I would love for you to watch it. We can never see that our story is going to come from our brokenness, but it will if you turn to God in faith and trust and see that your pain is your purpose!! Your test your testimony! Hold steadfast, he will rebuild your life, he is a God of RESTORATION!

    1. Cee Gee says:

Good word, sister! I am honored to be mentioned in your scenario- with brainpower even! ❤❤❤ :)
      .
Your PB/J sandwiches provided the protein and sugar those workers needed to keep up their hard work. I bet some of them still remember you doing that and especially the prayers. They were small acts of obedience at the time, but look what God has entrusted you with now that He knows He could trust you with the small things. ❤

    2. Mercy says:

So good Rhonda. Such grateful thoughts you had after such devastating hurricane, it was so bad. No whining, no blaming, no woe is me. How did you do this? :) Praise God for the gold that has been through the purifying furnace.

  33. Wendy B says:

Lots of great reflections and insights SRT sisters, thank you.

I needed this reminder today. After being away for 3 weeks from both home and work, things were not as I left them. Ha,ha. ;)
A couple things stood out to me. First, it took a number of people working together to rebuild. It wasn’t just one person. Everyone contributed to the task and everyone had a part. Secondly, the task of rebuilding may not have been enjoyable to all, likely tedious and monotonous at times, nonetheless, it needed to be done. The devotional gave great analogies to everyday life. On a personal level but also on a church life level, these are relatable to us. The seemingly mundane, tedious, day to day tasks have to be done around home to keep up with upkeep, make sure maintenance, to both care for our 4 walls, but also ensure we have what is needed to care for our needs or serve our families well. Garbage needs to be emptied, dishes washed, laundry done, groceries purchased etc. We may not enjoy these tasks, but letting them go by then wayside will negatively effect us. If we are single, they are solely our responsibility but in a family, hopefully those responsibilities are shared. In the church setting, we all need to be serving so as to support the ministries of the church. The pastor cannot nor should he do everything. We are called to use our gifts, talents and abilities to support. The ministry that God calls us to, Kingdom work is often nit glamorous but its neccessary. Our hearts always need to be soft and postured to serve, and can never be above or beyond what needs to be done. Whether its in our personal lives, church communties, work places, volunteer roles, we are all better together if we contribute and work towards a common goal. All that we are called to is important. May it honor and glorify Jesus❤️

Thank you for praying for me❤️

    1. Cee Gee says:

      So true, Wendy!
Praying for enetgyy and focus as you put things back to order! ❤

    2. Mercy says:

❤️ amen to all of this.

  34. Ada McCloud says:

As I read today I found myself lost in the names. People working side by side to rebuild walls and gates. I am worried about our future and pray we can put differences aside and rebuild.

  35. Susan Burley says:

Sometimes our Kingdom work can seem tedious just like rebuilding the walls! I love the modern day examples Scarlet provided (I.e. changing diapers, washing dishes, & working). God can truly be glorified in the little things when we reframe our mindset to one of thankfulness & praise. For me, I despise doing laundry. Putting it in the washer & dryer? Not a problem! Folding & hanging the clean clothes? I’d rather do anything else. I’ve started listening to worship music lately as I fold laundry so that even the mundane can be an offering of praise.

    1. Cee Gee says:

❤ I am remembering ‘the old days’ when ladies could be heard humming or singing while working. Also thinking of the phrase- “whistle while you work.”

  36. Karen Breaux says:

  37. Alexis Smith says:

I loved following along with the map in my Bible to show what part of the wall was being prepared by whom. It was great to see all areas being taken care of.

    1. Cee Gee says:

Thanks for that tip! I looked online, but now I will flip through my Bible to see if it has one. ❤

  38. Angela Van Dyke says:

Beautifully explained with the example! ❤️

  39. Carie Ritz says:

I love that names are listed. So personal

  40. Rachel (CO) says:

Great insights today! I was struck by v5: “And next to them the Tekoites repaired, but their nobles would not stoop to serve their Lord.” Lord, please keep my heart right-sized so that I never think myself too important to serve.

  41. Sarah Carmona says:

This was a cool “aha!” from the She Reads Truth study bible. Shallun in Nehemiah 3:15 “in John 9, they’re calling the pool “Siloam”, but don’t be confused it’s the same pool. Hundreds of years later, Jesus stood at the very pool Shallun repaired, and gave sight to a man who was blind from birth”.

  42. Emily says:

This is such a beautiful reminder that your work matters and what you are called to do is important even when it seems mundane. Needed this today.

  43. Samantha M. says:

Oof, I needed this reminder today! I help co-manage our church facilities team, and we often say, ‘facilities facilitate.’ Lord, may every act of obedience whether big or small be a way to create space for someone to encounter You today.

    1. Laurie Fouts says:

      ❤️❤️❤️

    2. Tanya Evans says:

I wrote this prayer in my study journal today.

  44. Searching says:

    BG verse today Philippians 2:3-4
Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.
    .
When tasked to work on or assist with something that’s not the norm for you, do it to the best of your abilities -you are representing not only yourself, but Christians and the Lord too. The phrases – start as you intend to finish, take pride in your work, actions speak louder than words – come to mind.
This group working on rebuilding came from all around the area and came from all walks and stations of life – the high priest, other priests, goldsmiths, perfumers, district leaders, merchants, men of the plain, the daughters … Several are noted as doing the community work first and then taking care of repairs in front of their homes.
What a coming together for the good of the community! I’m reminded of the work we do after hurricanes or other disasters to help set things to right – whatever is needed.

Step up and don’t automatically think it’s someone else’s job – it might be that you are the one called for the task. Seek the Lord’s guidance and wisdom daily.

Do you see what they all have in common? These people were all working on the parts of the wall that were right outside their homes. They were doing the hard work that was in front of them.”

  53. Julia C says:

OH THIS IS GOLDEN JOY (term borrowed from Tina ❤️) IN ACTION!
    (Great devotional, SCARLET HILTIBIDAL!)
    Let me explain my excitement…!

I have been watching a class from the Bible Project, called ‘Introduction to the Hebrew Bible’. One of the goals is to develop skills for reading narrative and poetry. Often, the literary elements of the text help to explain the story that is told. One of the most obvious features is repetition. In Nehemiah 3, two things are repeated in every verse: the person/people and the action (built / made repairs / restored / installed etc.). The text could have just said: “They listened to Nehemiah, renewed their confidence in God and restored the walls”, right? So what are the repetitions telling us?

Each person is important: it is a community project, women/daughters included, see verse 12.
Every effort counts: faith is expressed in sore backs, blistered hands and repaired gates.
Summary: Faith is built in the daily, communal, faithful work of rebuilding broken places.

But there is more! If you have the SRT Bible, you can find an example in Jess Connolly’s devotional on page 729, next to Nehemiah 3: “Did you notice Shallum, in Nehemiah 3:15? (…) He repaired the wall of the Pool of Shelah. No biggie, right? (…) In John 9, they are calling this pool ‘Siloam’, but don’t be confused -it’s the same pool. Hundreds of years later, Jesus stood at the very pool Shallum repaired, and gave sight to a man who was blind from birth. As Shallum was laying stone after stone in that very spot, he couldn’t possibly have known that all those years later, the Messiah would reveal His deity to a blind man in that very spot. This is an important place.”

Jess Connolly ends with this question: “What if your simple job is the setting for miraculous, kingdom-size work for generations to come?”
    Be blessed today sisters ❤️

    1. Kelly (NEO) says:

      Love this!

  55. Sammi E says:

Silly, but I thought of the episode of Bluey where Mum teaches the girls boring things are important too. They make the good times better when you’re prepared and organized. I’m very Type A and love to have my task lists and house put together (I won’t claim I love cleaning). I love what Nicole T said that “faith and patience give us strength to do what we’re called to do.” For me, many days this is an office job and the daily routine with littles picking up the same toy for the 100th time. Learning to slow down and love every moment, even the “boring” ones.

A hard lesson for me as well…

  56. Sally B. says:

If we look at the big picture, from Genesis 3 until now, all of God’s people have had responsibility to build a small part of His coming kingdom. Some days it feels like building it over and over again! But one day when Jesus returns, ALL will be made new and His kingdom will be perfect.
May we be faithful for our section of the wall until then!

    1. Tina says:

      Sally, this is lovely.. Amen.♥️

    2. Danielle B says:

Great reminder Sally! We all have a part!

    3. Julia C says:

A Walton, you’re in my prayers

  58. Nicole T says:

Faith and patience give us strength to do what we’re called to do. Dividing a task and believing in His strength through us and His people will allow us to accomplish great things. No matter how boring it may seem, small acts of obedience daily is what it’s about.

    1. Tina says:

      Amen.♥️

    2. Amanda Dunlap says:

  60. A Walton says:

    Hi!
I had a call from my doctor yesterday telling me I have lower iron despite taking iron for the past three months. That was hard for me to hear. I don’t think my supplement was working! I felt the same tiredness the whole time, so it didn’t surprise me it was low, but that it was lower!!! I’m going to switch brands. That news sent me down a path of worry. I am trying to cast my cares on Him. Would appreciate prayers.

    1. Sandi says:

Praying for you,and that your dr would get to the bottom of it;and that would calm your anxious heart

    2. Lynne from Alabama says:

      Praying, sweet sister! ❤️

    3. Tina says:

Praying A. Walton. Praying this gets sorted soon. Praying also that you DO cast your worries on the Lord, as they come to mind, give them to the Lord. He holds you. He sees you and He knows what is going on.. hold fast and tight to Him..
      He’s got you..
Much love dear heart, to you and yours..♥️

    4. Kelly (NEO) says:

      Praying.
Just a thought, if you can easily access them, snacking on raisins (or even better dried goji berries) helps boost your iron levels. ❤️

      1. Cee Gee says:

Cool fact, Kelly! My son planted Goji berries this year but I didn’t know about the iron! ❤
        .
Praying for wisdom for your doctor as you switch brands – to know if further testing is necessary. Hugs, sister!

    5. Julia C says:

      Just prayed ❤️

    6. Susan Burley says:

      Praying!!

    7. Ashleigh H says:

Praying for wisdom in this situation. You might ask to be referred to a hematologist if the low iron level continues. My five year old has a rare blood disorder that changes the shape of his hemoglobin to appear low iron in a blood draw. Not that you have it for sure, but a hematologist could help rule out blood disorders or confirm one and help with managing it. Regardless, prayers for your path forward.

    8. Wendy B says:

That is discouraging. Have prayed for you

    9. Jane K says:

Praying you get answers and help to raise your low iron levels. My daughter has struggled with this for years and the iron supplements have been hard on her body. She tries to get her iron from foods rich in iron and that has helped her.

    10. Kari Jae says:

Praying! I had a similar issue most of my life, then I started taking digestive enzymes. Turns out my body can’t break down the proteins and plant based foods enough to free the iron from them for my body to absorb, without a little help. I’ve also been on PPI’s most of my life, so this should have been a given to the docs, but it took me learning on my own to figure it out. I haven’t had low iron since. ❤️ (taking vit C is also crucial for helping free plant based food sources of iron)

      1. Mercy says:

Amen to KARI’s advice. Take your Iron supplements with vitamin C (always), have oranges, fruits that are rich in vitamin C so it can absorb. Beets, liver, beef are rich in iron. Prayers for you.
