Psalm 46:1-11, Psalm 47:1-9, Psalm 48:1-14, Psalm 49:1-20

Scripture Reading: Psalm 46:1-11, Psalm 47:1-9, Psalm 48:1-14, Psalm 49:1-20

There seems to be a perpetual heaviness to our days—so much uncertainty, unrest, and disunity. It feels like wickedness is having a field day in the world. It wears on our already worn hearts.

These pangs of helplessness have been felt throughout history. The wicked prosper, the faithful suffer, and the days keep going with no change in sight. What good is there when all of life feels upside down?

Psalm 49 is a psalm of admission that life feels unfair, that the wicked prosper with no break for the upright person. Is there any justice for the righteous? Where is God when it feels like His people can’t get ahead? It’s exhausting trying to tread the trends of this world only to realize you’re losing steam.

But we can endure, because kingdoms rise and fall, fads come and go, and what many put their focus on—money, power, status—crumble. What lasts is understanding and relationship with God.

The writer of this psalm understood who had his back. He lifted his perspective and made a prediction that God was still attentive and would come to his aid: “But God will redeem me” (v.15). It’s a guarantee. The psalmist was confident of the Lord’s involvement and placed his trust in God for the redemption of his own shortcomings as well as overcoming the evil of the world.

Psalm 49 reminds us that it isn’t about what we have but who. Life in Jesus is the best offer we can receive. Knowing Him is everything, and we will be left standing on His foundation when all other imitations of what the world values dissipate. Through Jesus, all is redeemed. All will be made right again in a new heaven and earth when He returns and establishes His reign. We can take this redeeming on a macro level, holding hope for humanity. And we can take this personally, as we place our trust in God to work in our lives, both now and forever.

God is a generous God who, because He rose from the grave, offers us grace, goodness, and redemption, both now and forever. Have confidence in Him to take your heart in His hands and hear your cries. He is over everything, and the events of the world fall under His authority.

What’s good in all this? God. He gives hope and redemption, a promise of a future where wrongs will be made right, evil is finally destroyed, and the people of the Lord live in harmony with Him. The Lord turns everything right in the end. Let’s look to Him to fulfill all we desire and to trust Him when it looks like we’re behind.

What the world wants won’t last. It’s God’s kingdom that will remain, and it is He who carries us through.

Reading the Psalms alongside today’s real world events makes me tremble at how prophetic God’s words truly are. They are alive, still valid, still speaking, still showing, serving as a mirror that reflects the actions of humanity, the chaos of godlessness, and the enduring conflict between good and evil. This battle has always existed. The Lord, the Lord of Hosts, is a true warrior. When we think of military power and strategy, I was reminded that God wages war differently. The battle of Jericho comes to mind as a profound example of God’s position and our position. It stands as the testimony of a sudden, supernatural collapse brought about not by human force, but by divine command. For six days His people marched around the entire city ONCE and then quietly went back to their camp. No taunting. The silence was commanded strictly by Joshua, “Do not shout or let your voice be heard, nor shall a word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I say to you, ‘Shout!’”. Can we handle the suspense of six days? Can we hold our tongue in a disciplined stillness when commanded so? I pray we have the grace and endurance to do so.
    .
And on the seventh day, the routine changed, they rose at dawn and marched around the city SEVEN times, the priests blew a long blast on the trumpets, Joshua commanded the people, “Shout, for the Lord has given you the city!”. There is spiritual refinement in the wait. We are in that wait. Six days of doing the same thing must have felt foolish, walking in circles, under risk in close range of arrows from the walls of the enemy, while those on the walls securely perhaps mocked and laughed mercilessly upon God’s people. Nothing appeared to move in six days, not a thing. Can we hold on? Knowing what we know. Then comes the seventh day, the fullness of time is reached. “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). His purposes unfold when the appointed time is complete. By finishing the seventh day, those who obeyed became witnesses to a miracle. God has a subtle approach for His people, by placing them in positions of stillness, singing, worshipping, and walking, God ensures that the victory is His alone, for His glory alone, as a divine strike from a higher dimension alone. A reminder for us, praise is still the weapon. Praise is still the strength for the battles of the mind, for the despair that looms in darkness, for the prolonging of waiting. Our God still inhabits the praises of His people. And another reminder in the current hour, “The Lord shall go forth as a mighty man, he shall stir up jealousy like a man of war: he shall cry, yea, roar; he shall prevail against his enemies” Isaiah 42:13. God is the still the Mighty Commander (not a panicked observer of current events). His Strike is precise, even when things look messy, His intervention is 100% surgical, He knows how to “confuse the Midianites” and turn the tide in ways no analyst can predict.
    .
Our modern call to “march” is different, yet no less demanding. Today, our march is to remain in prayer, to keep our hearts tender in a hardened world, and to refuse fear. “Do not fear”, “fear not”, “do not be afraid” was mentioned approximately 365 times in the bible, perhaps even more with close variants in different translations. We are called to keep walking forward and to keep the silence of trust.
    .
“Be still and know I am God” (Psalm 46:10).
    .
“Only with your eyes shall you look, And see the reward of the wicked” Psalm 91:8
    .
    Be blessed dear sisters.

so good! I meditate on Joshua and the battle of Jericho all the time because my daughter loves the good news guys and that particular song bc she just learned how to stomp and yell when they say yell. lol. I yell with her and it usually will take me out of whatever funk I’m in. I circled the “stop fighting” verse today, so this resonates

I am so glad that we serve a God who is in control and who one day will make everything right. I have lived a very blessed life and sometimes I forget just how scary and terrible this world can be for so many. I have gone through my own struggles but nothing like what I see around me. I am praying right along with all of you that God‘s will be done in this world. I choose to put my hope in him and that one day everything will be made right.

  14. Leslie Gray says:

Timely Psalms we have read today. There are no coincidences with God. Most of these psalms for today, call on God as King.
Psalm 47:2 “He is a great King over all the earth.” Today I am praising the King of Kings along with David! The kings and leaders of this world THINK they are calling the shots. They think they are in control. Oh, but our King has sovereignty not just over one Kingdom, but the whole earth. And after this weekend, I needed that reminder today. He is in charge, He is sovereign, and He has already won! We praise the highest King, seated on the highest Throne.

  15. Erica Chiarelli says:

What an apt bunch of chapters, especially chapter 49. With so much evil in the world, & it’s really in our faces now, it’s a beautiful reminder thy

  17. Tricia C says:

Happy Monday! Lots happened over the weekend, but we can be sure in this:

“For the Lord Most High is awesome. He is the great King of all the earth.”

  18. Cheryl Blow says:

Ps 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Ps 47:7-8. God is king over all the earth; sing by praises with a psalm! God reigns over the nations; God sits on His holy throne!

All of the Psalms brought such peace to me this morning and reminded me that God is still in control. Not to sit passively and do nothing but sing a psalm if praise to Him and to pray!

Thanks you for your prayerful thoughts and reminders of songs!

    Praying for all!

There is so many verses this morning that have encouraged me. Psalm 46:1, ‘God is our refuge and strength,” 46:10, “Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” 47:5-7 “God has gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of the trumpet. Sing praises to God, sing praises! Sing praises to our King, sing praises! For God is the King of all the earth; sing praises with a psalm!’ Psalm 48:1 “Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised in the city of our God.” There are many more, but these have blessed me and encouraged me this morning. I will be singing Psalms to God today. This is the answer to my fretting and anxious heart.

  22. Wendy B says:

Perpertual heaviness sure does seem to be the narrative these days, doesn’t it? Sigh. As of late, I feel like there is not a single day that goes by in my own circles without news of a great concern in the list of struggles – job loss, illness, diagnosis, heart turned from the Lord, financial hardship, marital strife, suffering, unexpected passing, deep hurt or heartache …the list goes on and then there is the state of our world and the news cycle. The world events just this last few days, goodness, the Psalms we read this morning are timely.
Praise the Lord for this truth from Psalm 47:7-8For God is King if all the earth; sing to him a psalm of praise. God reigns over the nations. God is seated on his holy throne.

Thank you Lord that you rule and reign above it all.

Psalm 46 has some longtime favorites

vs1&2a God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear.

vs7 The LORD Almighty is with us;the God of Jacob is our fortess.

vs10 Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.

I have a note in my margin at the end of Chapter 46 that says Cease striving, God is in charge. Good reminder to just be still and rest in Him. He is in control and Sovereign over all.

Thank you for praying for my Mom. Her pain and nausea has been managed much better since Saturday. She is scheduled to be transferred to another(larger)hospital today and hopefully have a day surgery procedure to address the issue.

  23. Lynne from Alabama says:

Good morning, sweet sisters! Several years ago I asked for prayer for my precious friend Gina who had just been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She has been really battling and has had many ups and downs with her treatments (sadly, more downs than ups). She has recently decided to stop all treatments. Of course, this makes me sad. My first thought upon hearing this was “It’s in God’s hands now.” Then I realized that it’s been in God’s hands the entire time. Please pray for peace for her, her family, and all her friends as she nears what could be the end of this long journey. She is a precious friend and sister in Christ.

“What the world wants won’t last. It’s God’s kingdom that will remain, and it is He who carries us through.”
    .
This reminded me of a podcast I was listening to earlier this morning. The subject was eternity. It’s good to hear over and again, that what the world has to offer – won’t last. So many people in this world strive to have things and accomplish much. What they aren’t realizing is that it’s all in vain, because we can’t take anything with us! “People who have wealth but lack understanding are like the beasts that perish.” (Psalm 49:20)
    .
I love the “but God” phrase in this chapter, (I immediately though of Tina ❤️) “But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead; he will surely take me to Himself.” (49:20)
    .
Praise God for the hope we have in Him, through the redemptive work of Jesus Christ!

Two of my favorite verses of Psalm 46:
→Psalm 46:1 – “God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble.”
→Psalm 46:10 – “Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted above the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

  27. Rhonda J. says:

God is our refuge and strength in times of trouble- on personal levels, country, and global. There is nothing we have to fear..let’s repeat. When the world seems out of control, and when we want to debate and fight, know that God has it in control always, and that’s where our eyes must stay. When you know the Bible you have such more understanding of everything that is happening. That there is nothing new under the sun. That in a time when we think we have come so far, well, the human heart is still sinful and lost. Making money and things idols, stealing God’s glory. Fighting for peace, or land, or power. Personal or global.
Oh how powerful these Psalms are for such a time as this, coming off of Advent (God’s ultimate plan for salvation). And then Acts (walking with Jesus and SHARING and TELLING the world!). Putting it all together. God is still powerful and active. He once again is trying to get us to pay attention, always pulling us to him. “In all our ways acknowledge him, he will keep our paths straight.”
In worry and fear- peace. In hate and anger- love. In remorse and sorrow- repentance. In sickness and disease- healing. Through loss-restoration! death- NEW life!! Resurrection!! Nothing to fear. The Lord is coming back for HIS church soon! We are given oil for our lamps..but you can’t have them in a closet or attic thinking the time is afar. It is closer than ever, right?! We are told to always be a bride waiting, Holy Spirit giving us wisdom and knowledge, knowing the word, having courage and understanding–Aren’t we thankful for that?! How God takes care of His children!! “If anyone loves me he will keep my word!” If we love him, not only do we do as his word says…we desire to!! With great earnestness and joy! We don’t have to worry about the outcomes. That is a weight we don’t have to carry, the burdens of the world. Personal and global. We pray. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on our own understanding.”

  31. Lanie H says:

a message God keeps putting on my heart is seeing God as the creator, anyone else? I tend to praise him and view him for the relational aspects, and missing the point that he is the ruler of the whole earth and YET he cares for me specifically. these psalms are helping drive it home for me.

    1. Cee Gee says:

That’s a great insight, Lanie! Similar to our person to person relationships now that you mention it! It’s easy to lose focus of a person’s WHOLE being and focus only on certain aspects of a relationship. I do recognize His role of Creator and try to capture creation in photography. Your comment gives me lotsvto think about! ❤

  32. Nancy Davis says:

Acts 26:18:… open their eyes, so they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God. Then they will receive forgiveness for their sins and be given a place among God’s people, who are set apart by faith in me.
Jeremiah 31:16-17 But now this is what the Lord says: “Do not weep any longer, for I will reward you,” says the Lord. “Your children will come back to you from the distant land of the enemy.17 There is hope for your future,” says the Lord.“Your children will come again to their own land.”

    2. KB says:

Holy Spirit, will you remind these precious ones of God’s steadfast love and faithfulness? Will you open their eyes to how you are and have been working in their life? Would you show them your glory and the depth of their shortcomings? Would you remind them that you are a safe, strong tower to which they can run and be saved? Would you turn the hearts of stone into hearts that seek your face? God, we know that you are working. We know that you love them. You know them intimately and you want them to come home to your holy hill. Bring them LORD of Angel Armies, bring them home ❤️

Good morning ladies. Be still and know that I am God… even though the mountains fall into the sea, though its waters roar and foam, and the mountains quake with their surging. In the midst of all the chaos and craziness surround us, be still! Not so easy to do all the time but a great reminder to me to look up and not around when I feel I am surrounded on all sides. And to let go and let God!

    1. Traci Gendron says:

      Amen

    .
    Psalm 48:8b
“The city of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

    It is the city of our God;

he will make it safe forever.”

I feel like I’ve never heard Psalm 49 before.. Well it certainly isn’t one I hear spoken of, often, or even one I might use on one of those days when…
And yet, OMG, it should be!
    .
    It should absolutely be!
    .
Every word of this Psalm had me!
    .
    From the “Hear this all you peoples;
    To
Why should I fear in times of trouble?
    To
Yet these cannot redeem a person or pay his/her random to God-
    To
For one can see that the side die:(but here is the thing, so do the foolish and stupid too)
    To
    BUT GOD will redeem me.
    To
For when he dies (the rich man, the wealthy man) takes nothing with him.
    To
Mankind, with his assets but without understanding, is like the animals that perish.
    .
I feel like this is the lesson of life, strive by all means, but strive for what is true, not the accolades or the praise that is not yours to begin with. Strive, with and for the One who strives with you, because He is your peace giver, your redemption, your Hope, and He will see you through when, this life lets you down, when, all seems lost, when we feel alone, when, we feel we are not worthy of being saved, He WILL bring us Home through Jesus, in His redemptive love..
    .
    BUT GOD.
    .
    Selah.

    Selah.

Happiest of Mondays dear hearts, He is here, He is near, He’s got your back.. Always..

  51. Helen Pennington says:

I’m so comforted by these timely Psalms today in a world of global unrest and war. The news brings more this past weekend and Psalms 46 and 47 remind me our God is refuge and strength, a helper who is always found in times of trouble. We will not be afraid though the earth trembles and the mountains topple. The Lord of Armies is with us, He is our stronghold and he makes wars cease throughout the earth.
    Do it again, Lord.

    1. Tina says:

      Morning Helen!❤❤

    2. Searching says:

      Same, Helen ❤️

    3. Libby K says:

I felt the same, Helen. The comfort from these verses grounds me back in the knowledge that the King is returning. He’s just holding back so that He can have as many souls as possible come to Him. Thanks be to God.

    4. Cee Gee says:

  52. Sally B. says:

Uncertainty, unrest and disunity – that pretty much sums it up, I think. And for me also, that can certainly lead to exhaustion and feeling like I’m losing ground.
Grateful for the reminder of Who has my back and Who is still in control of the world and everything in it.
Thank You, Father, that it is Your kingdom that will remain and You who carry us through! Amen.

    1. Cee Gee says:

      Amen ❤

  53. A Walton says:

My son has memorised Psalm 45 and 46. He made them both into rap songs, so I couldn’t help hearing it as I read. He’s working on Psalm 51 now. I especially love Psalm 46. Have turned towards that many times in different and difficult circumstances. Thank God for his word.

    1. Searching says:

      Your son’s creativity ❤️

    2. Rhonda J. says:

I love the Psalms to music! I have memorized Psalm 57 and 43 that way, and want to work on more! How great that your son has! Putting God’s word down in our heart where it will be written forever!!
