When do we most often ask God for help? When we’re in a mess, particularly a mess of someone else’s making. We find it pretty easy to say, “Hurry to help me, my Lord, my salvation” (Psalm 38:22) when circumstances are hard, when we are suffering, or when we are being oppressed or opposed. But those aren’t the scenarios Psalm 38 is addressing. In this psalm, David was addressing our need for help in a mess of our own making. He wrote of sin (v.3), iniquity, (v.4), and foolishness (v.5). So this is a psalm for the person who has blown it and made a disaster out of their own life. It is a plea for deliverance without deserving it.
Of course the question this raises is, why would God listen to that cry for help? After all, our sin is primarily against Him, against His will and His name, and in rejection of His love for us. In verses 2–12, David agonizingly described the cost of sin—the physical and emotional cost as well as the relational cost. Some of this is what you might call the natural consequences for sinful actions. Some of it, though, is the heavy hand of God in response to sin (v.2). So if God is the one against whom we have sinned and the one whose wrath and judgment we face for our sin, why would we think that calling out to Him for deliverance makes any sense at all?
The very fact that David had the impulse to appeal to God gives us a clue. Either David was wildly presumptuous or he knows something of God’s character that gave him the confidence to beg for mercy and help… and it is the latter. David knew that God was the only one who could deliver him (v.15). He knew that the judgment of God is not aimed at destruction but at correction and restoration. God shows this throughout the Old Testament, acting severely toward His people when they sin so that they turn back to life and joy in relationship with Him. His heart is gentle and loving—it is for His people. And David knew that God has always promised to restore the repentant. So of course He turned to God for deliverance from God’s own judgment.
What is especially beautiful is that, as we piece all this together, we see that Psalm 38 has a Lenten shape to it. It is a psalm of confession, acknowledging need and asking for rescue. It is a psalm of anticipation, looking to God as our only hope and waiting on the deliverance He will bring. And Psalm 38, like the season of Lent, is concluded and fulfilled in the work of Jesus. Jesus is the incarnate means of God’s help and salvation, the manner in which God ultimately answers this plea. Thanks be to Him.

Never take Gods grace and forgiveness for granite because He gives us those gifts because He loves us and cares for us so deeply❤️❤️✝️✝️
This is true. I have always been a Christian but a Luke warm one. I developed auto immune diseases and a brain condition and was hospitalized. I surrendered to god and went all in for him and I have been flare free for 6 months without medical intervention. Thank you Jesus!
❤️✝️
This hit home to me… recently i missed judged a situation and lost some very good friends because of it… my foolishness, my wrong reaction caused great pain to them and the loss of the friendship has brought great sadness to me…. Reading this psalms I could see it… a wrong of my making… But God still loves me, he has been kind to me and shown me how I was mistaken, He has started to heal the brokenness inside me and that gives me peace… although I might never recuperate this friends, I know God forgives me, will continue working in me and will lead me to a place where I will be able to find joy again….
“When you discipline a man with rebukes for sin, you consume like a moth what is dear to him, surely all man kind is a mere breath” Psalm 39:11. This verse gave me chills and flash backs. I experienced my idols (what is dear to me) consumed one by one, heartbreaks one by one, to be stripped down to bareness, and to be rebuilt back up with a different heart, different identity, and different desires (“I will give you the desires of your heart”). The Word of the Lord is truly a super sharp two-edged Sword to cut, to separate the hidden intentions, and to circumcise the heart. God is to be greatly feared. Holy is His Name forever and ever.
I read Psalm 38 as a heavy Psalm in that David is really feeling the weight and heaviness of his sin. He is so grieved by it and it just makes me really think that in all honesty, I’m not sure I truly recognize how deeply my sin grieves the heart of God. I’m not sure I truly feel the disconnect it causes my heart to God’s. I think I can so easily justify it, or gloss over the ways it can be harmful and not sure that I genuinely take the time to have a full repentant heart. Sigh….my humanness becomes so obvious in these Psalms. This is what the Lenten season is about.
Lord, search my heart. Bring me to me knees and show me the offensive ways in me. Your forgiveness, grace and mercy is far more than what I deserve and yet it awaits me. I’m sorry Lord for how route and simple I have approached confessing what is cleary wrong. Help me Father to walk with you. To turn away from the things that lead me to my own ways, my own desires and to look to you. Thank you Lord for your extravagant love and forgiveness. Amen.❤️
❤️
Amen!
This is so so good. I am grateful to see there is such a loved man of God that felt to same way I do when I review my choices in life. I know it’s to His goodness I have sinned against. I appreciate the Lenten shape as they said of confession and repentance. What a great season
❤️❤️
I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry – Psalm 40:1
“LORD, make me aware of my end
and the number of my days
so that I will know how short-lived I am.” (39:4)
This is ever so much more true at 60 than it was at 20 or even 40, but the truth is that none of us are even promised tomorrow. We must make every day count for God’s kingdom!
I know, that’s what I was thinking! And it speeds up the older you get, and you say…how did it go so fast!
As a longtime U2 fan, Psalm 40 had me singing along in my head, as the band turned the first few verses into a song in 1983. :-)
These were a bit of a rollercoaster to read. And so many peeks ahead to what we see with Christ. Through it all, He is faithful and with us.
Me too! Always loved that song!!
Me too! I have always loved that song!!
Thank you Lord!!
Amen Barnabas Piper!
We sin, God chastises, we cry out — God shows mercy, grace, forgiveness. It is the story of old.
So many times (but not always) our troubles are brought on by ourselves. And even in that, God awaits for our repentance. His desire is not to completely break us to a place of no return, but to correct, restore, and bring us back to Him. What a gracious heavenly Father! He loves us so, so much and wants to have a relationship with us – even though we are wretched sinners, we are still His children…but for the grace of God!

Father God, during this Lenten season, examine my heart – see if there is any wicked way in me. Bring it to my attention that I might confess it to you. I need you every hour of every day, I can’t afford to be “far off” for a second. You alone are our hope. Thank you for the cross and for the precious blood of Jesus that was spilled out for me. In Jesus name, Amen.

@Grammie Sue – it was so good to see your name here this week. I am so sorry for the news that you relieved about Steve’s tumor. How very disheartening that must have been. Continued prayers for his health, for the business, and for you. ❤️

Thank you ladies for all your prayers. Even though the conference was shortened and nothing went as planned (main speaker couldn’t make it due to cancelled flights) – it was perfectly planned by God all along. God ministered to our hearts through those who stepped in, and through the testimonies of those we met. We heard testimony after testimony from other ministry families of how God miraculously brought their prodigals to Jesus! It was if God was saying, “I see your prodigal, I hear your cry, I’m not finished yet”…we came away with so much hope, not only for our prodigal sons but for our church ministry. God is good!…so thankful for the part you all played in it through your prayers!! Have a blessed Thursday! ❤️❤️
P.S. – today is “move back home” day for our youngest son Jonathan.
Beautiful prayer! ❤️ Thank you and I hope all goes well with your son.
What a praise! So happy to be a part of the team praying y’all through and thrilled when that kind of praise is the result! Yes, praying for Jonathan! ❤

It is quite funny, not funny, how when our world seems wrecked, and we beg to God..help, what is happening, why must I face all this? Why am I going through this..I need You to fix this?! …AND Quick, might I add! Sigh. And 99 percent of the time we don’t even think about our wayward ways, trying to do things on our own. Or the sin we have been living in, with no thoughts of walking in God’s ways (even though we do claim our title as Christian). It takes a lot of humility to look at ourselves when the sticky situations come. The valleys, the pit, the fire. Accessing our life and not pointing the finger outward, but turning that finger back to ourselves. Just like David, that was living for his own desires and pleasures at one point, the troubles started piling up—but, he didn’t even see it, even as his friend tried to point it out!
When we finally hit our knees and see our wayward ways as an affront to God, straight out against Him, then restoration and healing can begin. Recognizing our sin, conviction AND ACTION, is a must to truly have fellowship with Him. Oh how patient God is. Oh how sweet to trust Him, knowing His way is good for us. I look back and wish I would not have made excuses and reasons of my own. We can be thankful for Jesus and the grace that brings, but it isn’t a reason to know what we are doing isn’t in alignment with God. I hope this Lent season we will self-exam ourselves, ask for conviction in all areas, where we need to submit, where we need to confess, where we need to do a u-turn. Lord, we pray for guidance, discernment, and conviction. Your ways are the best way. We want to continue a faithful fellowship with You, and find joy and peace within. We can’t do it on our own. And that, You, Almighty God, care, is so crazy even. That you could just let us go and destruct on our own, BUT you don’t. You keep trying to correct us. May we not grumble but seek you, search you. Remain in faithful prayer and meditation. Turn off distractions and hear you. Praise and Worship no matter what we face. For your ways are higher than ours. We thank you for the privilege that is ours that you accept us. In Jesus name, Amen.
When David talks of his sickness I couldn’t help but think of all the sickness and illnesses, and the bad health of so many people. It truly is an epidemic of bad choices. But maybe, that our nation has strayed so far from God. “Because of your anger, my whole body is sick; my health is broken from my sins.” How often have I prayed for healing and or just to feel better for the day, without looking to access faithfulness to him.
And when David talks about life being fleeting and fast- you don’t realize until you realize it. When you’re old! lol. And think..wow, how did I end up here? How did my kids grow up so fast. Just like they say, you can’t wait for them to get out of the “stage” they are in…then all the sudden they are gone out on their own. “Human existence is just a breath.” Oh the wasted years of living to have clothes and things, material items, bigger houses, nicer cars… that go out of style or rust. Always chasing the next thing…that doesn’t matter in the long run. Working away our time, as the kids grow up and leave. No, you don’t think about these things until you’re older….and it’s too late to correct. Then we try to tell our young ones, and they are as hardheaded as we were. Solomon was right all along. lol.
But now, as I am awakened, I do want to honor the Lord with my time and my money, following after the things of Him. Leaning my ear close to his lips, going where he sends, turning off the noise and distractions to hear, praying and seeking his direction, and saying Yes. Use me Lord, your servant, not my will but yours be done.
These Psalms do remind me of how much I need God daily! Ps 38:15 But to you, O Lord do I wait; it is you, O Lord, my God, who will answer.”
Only God can give us the answers when we fall like David or don’t understand our world, or when we are hurt! Keep looking to Him!
Praying for all the requests. Thank you for the songs!
I love from the meditation:
“David knew that God was the only one who could deliver him (v.15). He knew that the judgment of God is not aimed at destruction but at correction and RESTORATION. God shows this throughout the Old Testament, acting severely toward His people when they sin so that they turn back to life and joy in RELATIONSHIP with Him. His heart is gentle and loving—it is for His people.” — nicely written!!
I’m excited this morning because I read a set of verses a few years ago and decided that I wanted to put them up in my hallway….then couldn’t find them….
⭐Here they are in Psalm 39
“Lord, make me to know my end,
And what is the measure of my days,
That I may know how frail I am.
5 Indeed, You have made my days as handbreadths,
And my age is as nothing before You;
Certainly every man at his best state is but vapour.
…
7 And now, Lord, what do I wait for?
My hope is in You.” (NKJV)

Have a blessed day, my sisters
Love your use of the emojis! ☺ Like you I watch for the ones others use so I can ‘adopt’ them. The CROSS is what I was looking for, but I didn’t see it. I am going to scroll through again since it worked for you in your previous reply. Hopefully, I just missed seeing it! ❤⭐⚡✨☺
I noticed your hearts are also either black or white (depending on if it’s replying to someone else)…are they a different colour at your end.
I’m on Android and yes LOVE ✝️ because it’s the cross of my Lord….AND purple!!!!
That’s the one I love, too! I have an android phone and it’s in my list there, but so is the red heart. It posts as black! Even the red one on my laptop shows as black once it is posted. They all used to be red on each device. Also, the heart shows as white on the darker “reply” background.
Tough techie stuff! ❤
Song…in the 80s, my sister and I had a favourite Debby Boone secular song….in the 90s, I had a cassette full of her Christian songs, one of which was essentially Psalm 40.
I can’t think of the title (I repeat… cassette ☺️).
If anyone knows, feel free to remind me. ❤️
Debbie Boone!
Yup!!
You light uo my life! I loved that song, too!
From memory:
You light up my life,
You give me hope to carry in.
You light up my days and fill the nights with song
Going to look at lyrics now!
That means the world ❤️
Oops! Your prayers DO mean the world to me but, I might that comment for SHARON JERSEY GIRL.
Yes, in the 80s, we listened to “You Light Up My Life”, playing a 45 on our Mickey Mouse record player. But then in the 90s, a friend gave me a cassette of Christian songs sung by her….I will try to scour the internet tonight and report back tomorrow!
Continued prayers for your foster son.❤️
That means the world ❤️
I was reading that Psalm 38 is a penitential psalm because David expressed sorrow for his sin, as was mentioned. He confessed his sin to God. I am so grateful that we have a merciful Savior who cares us when we cry to Him.
Then when you read in Psalm 40:6, God wants us to come to him with a contrite heart. He wants us to confess our sins willfully.
1 Samuel 15:22 states the same as this verse. Samuel was speaking to Saul when he said, “Obedience is better than sacrifice.”
I can do a whole bunch of things and sacrifice a whole lot of time for things that I think are for the Lord, but if I am not following his will and his direction it doesn’t mean a thing.
Lord, I confess my sins to you today and ask for you to please forgive me. Lord, I pray that the things I do and I say will bring you glory, and that I would be obedient to your call and your will for my life. In Your precious and holy name, Amen.
I can do a whole bunch of things and sacrifice a whole lot of time for things that I think are for the Lord, but if I am not following his will and his direction it doesn’t mean a thing.” omph. swallow. yep. That’s good Tricia! Trust…and obey. For there’s no other way…to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
❤️
“Obedience is better than sacrifice.”

“I can do a whole bunch of things and sacrifice a whole lot of time for things that I think are for the Lord, but if I am not following his will and his direction it doesn’t mean a thing.”
Amen to both statements and to your prayer! ❤
One of my favorite worship songs these past few months has been “A Forgiving God” by SEU Worship. It tells the parable of the wayward son returning home to his father, but I’ve always pictured myself as the wayward daughter returning to God. “He’s been sitting on the porch, awaiting your arrival, you never left His heart, He’s always thinking of you.” What a gift Lord!
I will have to find that song. Thank you for sharing Susan.
Susan, I have never heard them or the song. Thank you for sharing! Talented group of young people; encouraging to see that kind of worship! ❤
Praise be to our God that He chooses to seek restoration and wholeness for us. His punishments are for our good.
So thankful for this, amd I also pray as a mom that I can do this for my son. May my punishments always be motivated by a desire for restoration and for his good.
Thank you Jesus!
(heart)
“He seeks restoration and wholeness for us. His punishments are for our good”
I always see that so vividly for many of our ladies that are in jail. Many, God is actually trying to stop and get their attention to change their ways and their destructive path.
Well said, Meagan! Yes, thank You, Jesus! ❤
These few verses stuck out to me today in Psalm 40:
How happy is anyone who has put his trust in the Lord and has not turned to the proud or those who run after lies.
I delight to do your will, my God, and your instruction is deep within me.
The world, social media, the news, etc. can be so loud and misleading. Content that initially seems helpful and validating (mental load/women doing way more than the husbands, default parenting) can easily lead ME astray. God, please help me continue to stay grounded in you! Ruminating about all of the things in my life that are hard is certainly not helpful! Have a blessed day, ladies!
So true ❤️
“Ruminating about all of the things in my life that are hard is certainly not helpful!”
Something I put before the Lord everyday, too, Kim! Thank you for sharing! ❤
Hi Kim, thank you for taking the time to put this into words, “Content that initially seems helpful and validating (mental load/women doing way more than the husbands, default parenting) can easily lead ME astray.”
This is something that I have found myself becoming more aware of as well. Content quickly becomes toxic when it reinforces a “heart hurt” – such a good thing to be cognizant of, especially as it can help lead us to deeper relationships with our spouses if we are able to consider (in compassionate conversation) the hurt that lies behind the desire for that affirmation from social media content. Praying that the Spirit would continue to guide all of our hearts, helping us to evaluate how the things we consume distract us from the voice of the Lord.
Amen

Psalm 38:15-16 –
Despite his spiritual depression, David clung to hope in the Lord. Though he did not feel it, in faith he believed God would hear. This affliction pressed David closer to God as his only hope.
.
Psalm 38:21-22 –
More than anything, David wanted the sense of God’s presence (be not far from me). The absence of that sense was likely David’s greatest trial in this dark season. David pressed his need before God with urgency and looked to the Lord as his only salvation. The psalm ends without a change in circumstances but with continued faith in God.

My first thought as I read Psalm 38 was, “Of course David sought out God for forgiveness; he was in a covenantal relationship with Him.”
Father, may I always, like David, seek Your face QUICKLY when I recognize that I have sinned. May I see You as my Savior and be mindful of Jesus’ sacrifice –
His blood for my salvation. That is a true covenantal relationship!

Draw Me Nearer by Fanny Crosby
(1st and 2nd verse and refrain):
I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice,
and it told Thy love to me;
but I long to rise in the arms of faith,
and be closer drawn to Thee.
Refrain:
Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,
to the cross where Thou hast died;
draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,
to Thy precious, bleeding side.
2 Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord,
by the pow’r of grace divine;
let my soul look up with a steadfast hope,
and my will be lost in Thine. [Refrain]

I tried some different emojis today, hence the periods/ gaps in previous comment! I wasn’t sure which ones would be accepted. ☺

Psalm 38:15
For in You, O Lord, I hope; You will hear, O Lord my God.

David prays openly about the source of all he’s going through:
“Because of my sin” “Because of my foolishness” “For I will declare my iniquity; I will be in anguish over my sin.”
.
So many times, people blame others in an attempt to side step their choices and their sin … all the way back to Eve and Adam.
Genesis 3:11-13
11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?”
12 Then the man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.”
13 And the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”
The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
.
And to what end? God knows all and sees all, let’s admit and confess.

Great parallels and prayer prompt; joining in those prayers! ❤❤❤❤
Reminds me of Flip Wilson. His famous quote was, “the devil made me do it.”
“I didn’t want to buy this dress. The devil made me buy this dress!” (This was from a skit I’ve seen on an old Ed Sullivan show.) In the same skit the devil said, “It’s because of me that your husband has a job.” (The husband was a preacher.) Hahahahaha… yep!
Praying over these requests!
Thank you for echoing my prayer – I had a hard time putting it into words. I knew the Spirit would speak to those who prayed!
Amen. Forgive me Lord. Amen
What a comfort to know that God’s discipline is because he wants our repentance so that we can be in relationship with him.
Last night, my daughter’s high school orchestra has the most beautiful concert with guest artist Wendell Kimbrough. He is a folk singer and songwriter who has written many songs based on the Psalms. His recordings are available on music platforms for anyone interested. I was truly blessed by the concert and look forward to listening to ones available that go with our readings each day.
Praying for you and your mom, Cat-tee!

Psalm 38:9
“Lord, my every desire is in front of you;
my sighing is not hidden from you.”
.
This struck me today as I have found myself sighing a lot lately. Sighing for missed opportunities. Sighing for seemingly unending injustice in the world. Sighing for the young, single mamas I work with who cannot seem to catch a break. Sighing over my own hard-heartedness. Sighing for those who are grieving losses…
.
Praying for your requests, Shes. May we all lean into Jesus today.
Joining you in prayer and sighing, sister.
