Psalm 119:1-88

Scripture Reading: Psalm 119:1-88

Have you ever tried to describe someone you love to someone who’s never met them? Sometimes words just don’t seem enough to convey how wonderful that person really is. That’s when we might say, “To know him is to love him.”

In 1680, Puritan theologian Edmund Calamy expressed a similar sentiment when he wrote, “All that meditate in, and study God, cannot but love him.” Psalm 119 beautifully captures this. The psalmist knew God and treasured His commands. They were a fountain of comfort and encouragement in the midst of his suffering. After all, princes had plotted against him (Psalm 119:23). He was taunted and ridiculed (v.42,51), bound in the cords of the wicked (v.61), slandered (v.69), and persecuted (v.86).

In his suffering, he kept returning to God’s words for comfort and peace. He delighted in meditating on God’s words (v.16,35,70). He longed for them and put the full weight of his trust in them. He even said his afflictions were good because they kept him nearer to God (v.67,71). If I’m being honest, I’ve struggled to cling to God’s word in the face of afflictions. How about you?

Jesus said, “…everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled…the Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead the third day” (Luke 24:44,46).

The psalmist’s sufferings and love for God’s Word point to Jesus. Rulers plotted against Him. He was taunted and ridiculed by His own people. Though He was innocent, the wicked bound Him up, lied about Him, and persecuted Him to the fullest extent which led to His excruciating death on a cross.

On Calvary, Jesus even recited familiar words from a psalm in the midst of His torture! He fulfilled the psalms so that “repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be proclaimed in his name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem” (Luke 24:47).

Here is good news! What keeps me (and you) close to God is not our imperfect efforts to obey Him but Christ’s perfect obedience. Jesus loved every word that came from the Father. He faced undeserved afflictions with perfect faithfulness. When we put our faith in Him, God treats us as though we lived His life.

As you continue reading through the psalms, remember the One through whom we receive God’s eternal peace and comfort. To know Him is to love and obey Him. May this be true of us in the coming days: “I have treasured your word in my heart so that I may not sin against you” (Psalm 119:11).

Oh how I admire the steadfast faith of this psalmist… always returning, drawing nearer, closer to God’s word. I am guilty of going through a period of outright frustration before turning to the word… I aspire to flee straight to God before anyone else or trying to validate my emotions/reactions. Psalm 119 is just beautiful!

119:66 Teach me good judgement and discernment for I rely on your commands.
    .
God’s commands are given us out of love. He has our best interests at heart. Our friends and family mean well, but God is who I want to always turn to.

I remember a couple of years ago doing the 2 week reading of Psalm 119 with SRT. It is one of my favorites. Beautiful book. At the same time Christie Knuckles was doing Psalm 119 on her Glorious and Mundane podcast. It was such a lovely study…..

If you ladies could please pray for me. I have been struggling with anxiety, these past couple weeks. I think I have just been too busy, and not taking the right amount of time to recharge. I also need to focus on Jesus and allow him to be my rest and peace. ✝️

    1. Tricia C says:

Jennifer, that can be so difficult at times. I’m also finding that I need to rest and lean into Him and His Word.
I am praying now for you to find the peace that only comes from Him.

  7. Mercy says:

“I will run in the way of your commandments when you enlarge my heart!” (Psalm 119:32). This really caught my attention today. I will run in the ways of your commandments WHEN you ENLARGE my heart. A big-hearted person is someone kind and generous in my understanding, but here, the heart needs an enlargement, and that has to come from GOD, not from one’s efforts. Wow- that is a gift to have a big heart. You know our family loves the movie the Grinch so much, written by the famous Christian theologian Dr Seuss, and one of my favorite quotes in the movies, “And what happened, then? Well, in Whoville they say – that the Grinch’s small heart grew three sizes that day”, this pivotal moment happens when he realizes that Christmas means more than just gifts, but a little bit more. This part always gets me teared up. And surprisingly, this is the concept in Psalm 119 today that was illustrated in the Grinch. The heart is the center of the will, the emotions, the intellect. To have a “small heart” can mean to be narrow-minded, spiritually restricted by ego and fear. When God enlarges a person’s heart, for example Mr. Grinch, he goes from a resentful isolated green fuzzy creature, to being sweet, he has a new volume of love and grace for others. I love that. Mr Grinch can now connect, and focus on others instead of solely inward to himself (to be so pitiful of his own immediate troubles). With a larger heart, one can have room for other’s burdens as well, not full of self, and not so easily offended. So my prayer today, dear LORD, enlarge everyone’s heart that we may run in the way of your commandments. Enlarge our heart, something only YOU can do, reach out for the lost, the blind, the resentful, the isolated, the outcast, the Grinches out there, help us to be an inviter with kindness and innocence like a child (make us like the Cindy Lou Who), so we may extend an invitation for the outcast to come and sit at the table of the King… in Jesus’ Name. Be blessed dear sisters.

Happy Monday sweet She’s! I’m here just later! So much to dissect. “I have treasured your word in my heart (hide) so that I may not sin against you.” (Psalm 119:11) There are somethings I really need to work on, such as the words that come out of my mouth. Sigh!!!!…… I feel so shameful many times yet I know my Jesus STILL loves me!!!! I’m being honest here, making this short as I’m looking forward to a run OUTSIDE!!! The sun is beautiful and it’s a gorgeous morning here in NorCal!

    1. Tina says:

I have treasured your word in my heart, so I will not sin against you.. Right there is a work in progress. This is so heart hitting..
Work on it Tina, shall we work on it together Mari?
      Much love..❤️

  11. Rhonda J says:

When we read, study, and meditate on the word..God’s precious words and instructions, and promises…it penetrates our souls. Gives understanding (opened eyes!). It pours out of us…and we then can live it out in action. In our feelings and emotions. We stay steadfast! Don’t you love someone steadfast in your life? They always exude a steady confidence, sound the same, look the same. They are refreshing. They are a joy, they are precious, and rare!! I think of my madre, that was ALWAYS the same. Throughout my life…never getting worked up, never raising her voice…(although maybe just some frustration at my dad. WHICH is very understandable. He was up and down constantly, reactive, hot tempered, but also very fun and loving).
We can TRUST in God, He is steadfast, a rock, always guiding us and loving us! No matter if we fall or go astray- He is the Father watching, anticipating, hoping we come to our senses. I like the verses that touch on that. For they are dumb that don’t know you are follow you. Yep! Truth.
Also the one that says I suffered so you could wake me up…get my attention back to you!! I say this all the time…if there wasn’t something that stopped us in our tracks of living from Him, we would keep living for ourselves. Suffering turns our eyes off ourselves. If it is not our own, then we should see others hardships–giving empathy and compassion, prayers, and provisions, etc.
We need to not only honor and bless God, meditate on Him…but see what he desires and has for his children!! He wants to use us, He is looking for usable daughters! We have to listen first- be still and quiet, and focus on him throughout our days. Then SAY YES–and we will be amazed! This is walking in his precepts. Honoring and Action to give back all he has giving. It’s not a life that’s good…it’s about honoring him. Love your God, with all your heart, soul, and mind. Then love others.
May we all keep Psalm 119 front and center in our “good ones” to go back to often to re-calibrate us!
For sorrow comes for an evening, BUT JOY comes in the morning!

Also, LOVE that he is “a lamp at our feet, a light to our path!” ONE step at a time, trusting. I got to see that in our mission this past week (with Stacey). God gives us our bread for today..not for tomorrow. I pray we will keep our eyes on the lamp. Not trying to keep ahead and use a flashlight and binoculars. :/

Hugs and prayers for She’s that need that today! I guess that is ALL of us! :)

    2. Tami says:

Rhonda as I read today’s psalm, I couldn’t help but think of you because you’re always talking about how important it is to stay in God’s word and how it’s impacted your life:)

      1. Rhonda J. says:

(Heart!) Yes, I love to tell everyone HOW important and life-changing it is to read the word! Front to back at least once…and then never stop reading and studying/meditating! It is crazy the small percentage of proclaimed Christians that don’t read their Bibles at all! :/

    3. Mercy says:

Daily bread. Enough for one day. Thank you Rhonda ❤️… Adrienne hope all is well sister. You were missed.

3 They do not compromise with evil,
and they walk only in his paths.
    4 You have charged us
    to keep your commandments carefully.

11 I have hidden your word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you.
    12 I praise you, O Lord;
    teach me your decrees.

18 Open my eyes to see
the wonderful truths in your instructions.
35 Make me walk along the path of your commands,
for that is where my happiness is found.
    50 Your promise revives me;
it comforts me in all my troubles.

    64 O Lord, your unfailing love fills the earth;
    teach me your decrees.

65 You have done many good things for me, Lord,
    just as you promised.
    66 I believe in your commands;
now teach me good judgment and knowledge.

72 Your instructions are more valuable to me
than millions in gold and silver.

As I much of the Psalms I have many verses underlined, circled and margin notes all over Psalm 119. It if full of instructions, testimony, precepts, statutes, and commandments. It has countless action words/phrases for us to be mindful of as we read the Word….walk in His ways, seek Him, obey Him, praise Him, do not stray, teach me, direct me, meditate, delight, open my eyes. Vs. 11: I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you and then Vs.30: I have chosen the way of truth; I have set my heart on your laws really stand out to me as ones that bring the importance of knowing/reading/obeying God’s Word and prioritizing it in our lives. We just can’t be complacent in the consumption, studying, meditating and knowing God’s Word and letting it and the Lord himself be the most important, central source of guidance and instruction in our lives. We read also of God’s great love and care for us, His comfort, His promises, salvation, and that He hears us. Vs 41: May your unfailing love come to me, O Lord your salvation according to your promises and Vs. 50 My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life.

There is just such rich instruction, direction, comfort and ways we can identify with these verses and I am so thankful for God’s Word and the ways I am reminded of who He he is and how He loves us. May we all be blessed and encouraged in the reading of His Word today.

Amen! I always love reading your comments after the devotional because you all have such wonderful insights. Also, THANK YOU for all the prayers yesterday— I felt them all. I felt like I have a wonderful support system, especially because my husband doesn’t want to tell anyone in the family yet, and I was feeling so alone with this diagnosis. Yesterday was a full day of praying and quiet moments, processing and digesting the information we received. But this morning, I woke up feeling lighter and ready to face what’s next. Today we call the doctor to discuss treatment plan, and we put our faith in God. Thank you again, and prayers for all the requests, especially the prodigals. Oh that the list gets shorter, as we continue to pray for them. Have a wonderful day, sisters.

34 – Help me understand your instruction, and I will obey it and follow it with all my heart.

I think because the kingdom of this whole world and the kingdom of God are so opposing, really understanding the what/why/how of God’s instruction can be honestly difficult. Especially the why… In this world we wait for the “why” before we act. This is especially true of children- the first genuine, honest question is always “why?”, and it’s not always out of distrust but because our hearts really want the understanding. We see God’s kindness in how often he gives us the why in scripture, regardless of the fact that his authority alone can rest as our reasoning for following his word. But I will say this- I do believe that as we mature in our faith, often we’re asked to follow first with the reasoning (sometimes) to come later. I say sometimes because there are actions we are asked to step into that I believe are seeds being planted, the fruit of which we won’t always see this side of heaven.
Currently I am trying to know and understand some circumstances and how God is guiding me to respond to them and i’m getting conflicting input. I’m praying that HIS voice will guide my actions and what I commit to, AND that He will graciously confirm or quickly correct my decisions. I know that he knows my heart and I am confident his grace is sufficient to guide me and his mercy is enough to forgive me and that his loving desire is to always provide me with plenty of both.

❤️ praying for the Lord’s clarity and guidance, Heidi. I need the same in at least one situation and am doing my best to wait on Him. It’s The Thing I should do and the only thing I can do other than let my mind spin in circles.

I wanted to dive more deeply into the idea of mediating on God’s word after I heard a teaching by CS Lewis on this yesterday. I posted it on FB if anyone wants to listen. It is so good and so timely for today’s reading. The Hebrew word for “meditate” is (hāgāh), which means: to quietly speak, repeat, and deeply think about something over and over. Meditation in Hebrew is actively repeating and focusing on God’s Word until it sticks in your mind and shapes your actions. David was so good at this, he could be in the middle of a lament and then turn it into a BUT GOD… “In his suffering he kept returning to God’s words for comfort and peace”. Amen! Let us all do the same! V28 My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word.” V37 Turn my eyes away from useless things; preserve my life according to your word.” V50 “My comfort in my suffering is this: your promise preserves my life”.

    1. Leslie Bishop says:

Could you tell me your name on Facebook? I would like to follow you and hear this teaching.

      1. Searching says:

She may be referring to the private fb group Rhonda set up, I think it is “SRT SHE’S” –
RHONDA, would you please confirm or correct me?

      2. Karen Swanson says:

SRT SHE’S is a Facebook group. Search for it and ask to be admitted

    2. heidi says:

It wasn’t until a study I did with some friends in college that I understood more of HOW to meditate. My brain is wired on “active” so I just always felt like I did it wrong. But I love that you clarified there IS action in meditation. It isn’t, as secular circles encourage, the “emptying your mind”, but rather FILLING it with the truth of who God is. We can empty of our distracting/anxious thoughts – but always in the light of replacing them with his truth.
A system I learned that helped SO MUCH – was Picture Ponder Pray. You always start by reading out loud the passage in front of you.
      1. Then you read it again, slowly, and PICTURE it vividly using your 5 senses- what would you smell, hear, see, etc. if you were right there.
      2. Next you PONDER, define each word as you read it, think through questions, insights, sharing with God the thoughts those images in the passage bring.
      3. Last you PRAY it back. Whatever insight you gained, gratitude you can share – all of it. You read it this 4th time, praying back to God the heart of the passage. Sometimes it means claiming promises he’s sharing, expressing gratitude for what he’s done, praising him for his Being, sometimes it’s confession of what he’s brought to mind… But by the end you have read the passage 4x so thoughtfully, it brings so much life to what’s typed on the page :)

Love the 3P method you described!! Thanks for the offering! Dutifully recorded & willing to implement!

    3. Tami says:

Yes I was referring to our FB group. And Heidi so true. We hear meditate and we think “emptying” but Biblical meditation is “filling” ourselves with God’s word. I also learned that meditate can mean “chewing” like when cows chew the cud, they keep chewing and chewing I wish I knew Hebrew with all of its different meanings.

GM ladies. Here is a list of our prodigals, longer and longer each week. I’m praying that the Lord surprise us and that we hear of testimonies this week! Add any names in the comment below my name. Have a blessed Monday!

Acts 2:39 For the promise is for you and for your children, and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

Acts 26:18:… open their eyes, so they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God. Then they will receive forgiveness for their sins and be given a place among God’s people, who are set apart by faith in me.

Jeremiah 31:16-17  But now this is what the Lord says: “Do not weep any longer, for I will reward you,” says the Lord. “Your children will come back to you from the distant land of the enemy.17 There is hope for your future,” says the Lord.“Your children will come again to their own land.”

Did anybody else notice we went from Psalm 112 right to Psalm 119? Excuse my ignorance, but what about 113-118?

    1. Kelly (NEO) says:

These psalms are being covered on the Grace Days (Saturdays) of this study

      1. Searching says:

Kelly ❤️❤️ in looking back in my book, these are on Sundays … the weekends are a blur, right?!
Here’s what the book says for week 1, Day 7:
Hallel psalms, coming from the Hebrew word meaning “to praise,” are individual psalms or groups of psalms traditionally used during celebratory seasons of the Jewish calendar. While there are many Hallel psalms, Psalms 113–118 are known specifically as the “Egyptian Hallel” (a reference to Ps 114:1) and were recited, sung, or prayed in Jewish homes to commemorate the Passover.
Each Sunday during this plan, we will read a different Hallel psalm and memorize one of its verses.

      2. Karen Swanson says:

Because they are the “Hallel” or praise Psalms

        1. Kelly (NEO) says:

100 %…thank you for correcting me…Saturdays are the days we are doing tradional Lenten readings (right?) LOL❤️❤️

      3. Rhonda J. says:

I, too, was surprised this morning! Why did we just skip?! lol. I would have never realized they were those on Saturdays!

        1. B says:

          Me too/me either!
          Thanks Kelly and Searching!!

    2. Karen Elizabeth says:

      Wondering the same thing!

    3. Brittany Jacobs says:

Yeah I though same thing why we skipped over them

    4. Wendy B says:

There has been some additional explanation of the Hallel Psalms and why we are reading them in a different order in the podcasts as well. :)

  35. Cat-tee says:

“Open my eyes so that I may contemplate wondrous things from your instruction.” Amen!

    1. Kim says:

This resonated with me as well! So good.

  36. Sally B. says:

Loved the observation that all the psalmist’s experiences point to Jesus’ life and death on the earth. While I can love the word and study it and hide it in my heart; I can never fully obey it.
Thank You, Jesus that Your perfect obedience and faithfulness to all of God’s word offers salvation to all who put their faith and trust in You!! Amen.
