Nebuchadnezzar’s Pride and Praise

Open Your Bible

Daniel 4:1-37, Deuteronomy 32:39, 1 Corinthians 1:28-29

Scripture Reading: Daniel 4:1-37, Deuteronomy 32:39, 1 Corinthians 1:28-29

When I was in middle school I went on a father-son hiking trip with my dad and a few other families. One morning I saw one of the other dads lying face down on the ground near the river. At first, I thought he had fallen so I went to check on him. Beneath him was a small freshwater stream flowing out from under a rock. He was drinking directly from it. He looked at me and said, “this is the best water you will ever taste.” I tried to scoop some with my hand, but he said, “the only way to drink it is to get on the ground.”

There is a posture in life that offends God. It is the life we see King Nebuchadnezzar live in the first part of our story: “Is this not Babylon the Great that I have built to be a royal residence by my vast power and for my majestic glory?” (Daniel 4:30). This is the life of pride that trusts in and exalts self. You can trace the self-exalting sin of pride from the tower of Babel in Genesis 11 all the way to the beasts of Revelation.

There is a posture in life that pleases God. It is the life that King Nebuchadnezzar turned to when the Lord granted back his sanity, “Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise, exalt, and glorify the King of the heavens, because all his works are true and his ways are just. He is able to humble those who walk in pride” (v.37). This way of living is marked by humility and recognition of the greatness of God and is self-deferential in response to the glory of God.

Reading our passage today reminded me of the words from Mary’s song, “he has toppled the mighty from their thrones and exalted the lowly” (Luke 1:52).

It is a kingdom reality that God humbles the proud and exalts the humble. We may never devolve into animal behavior like King Nebuchadnezzar, but left to ourselves, we will choose a life of self-referential pride that betrays what it means to be human.

The beauty of the gospel is that Jesus was rightfully exalted and chose to be humbled to save us from our glory stealing pride. On the cross He did not act like an animal, but He was treated like one so that you and I may become truly human. His humble love makes a way for us to be rescued from sin and pride and welcomed into a life of humble obedience.

Like the stream of fresh water, the only way to get it is on the ground. We have to lower ourselves to the dirt, repent of self-exaltation, and, like King Nebuchadnezzar, exchange our heart of pride for a heart of praise.

    Praying for you all today.

Mercy – praying for your sweet husband. The S word is very near to my heart as you all watched me navigate that with my dad. Praying the Lord will lift his spirits and he can feel the weight of that lifted.

  7. Mercy says:

Hi ladies, I am coming to ask for prayers for my husband. He is having another mental meltdown, and I am the punching bag. He refuses to see a therapist (whom by God’s grace I was given contact of one that used to be a pastor and now works as a therapist to help others). I think my husband has bipolar issues, and also confirmed from diagnosed ADHD, poor emotional regulation. His rage is unpredictable and it is like he has double characters, and also hiding drinking issues, no longer believing in GOD. He kept thinking about his mom lately who disowned him a few years ago. He thinks therapists and counsellors are to make money and no one on earth can help him. Please pray for his sound mind and emotional stability, peace in our home and environment. Thank you for your prayers.

    1. Mercy says:

ps. I would appreciate your prayers against the spirit of su!cide.

    2. Cee Gee says:

Mercy, praying God’s protection over you and your family! I grew up with a father who exhibited everything you mentioned except the drinking issue. Praying God will re-direct your husband’s behavior patterns for all of your sakes! My husband had never been interested in councikung euther even though we have certainly needed it. He wouldn’t even do a marriage course I had on dvd. Said all of that so you know my empathy has a base! Hugs, sister!!! ❤❤❤

    3. Searching says:

Praying, dearest Mercy, for the anger, mental health challenges and darkness to be resolved and dissolved; for the peace of God to settle into his heart and mind enabling emotional stability and a clear mind; for the Lord’s protection over your family and home; for any thoughts of self harm to be totally removed and that you would feel and see the Lord moving in your life and home for healing and safety.

        Amen!!

  8. Heather Storie says:

My biggest point of pride is in my sin. I think that other people’s sins are worse than my own. This is wrong thinking! But so hard to see clearly. “Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.”Psalm 51:5

  9. Mercy says:

Just this morning, I heard a wise observation on pride, it was said, the spirit of offense and the spirit of victimhood are from pride. Eve blamed the serpent (i am its victim). May the Lord give us the heart of humility and repentance everyday. Be blessed dear sisters.

    1. Cee Gee says:

      Amen! ❤

  10. Tricia C says:

    From my NLT commentary:
“Although Nebuchadnezzar praised Daniel‘s God, he still did not believe in him completely or submit to him alone. Many people attend church and use Christian language, but they really don’t honor God with their lives. Profession doesn’t always mean possession.”

Lord God, please give me the courage to both profess and to possess what you have for me. May you be glorified. In Jesus name, AMEN.

    1. Cee Gee says:

Amen, Tricia; thanks for sharing! I love my NLT Study Bible! ❤

    2. Indiana Elaine says:

I love the NLT as well. My study Bible is NIV.

  11. Cee Gee says:

    James 4:10 (NLT)
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.
    .
    Isaiah 66:2 (NLT)
My hands have made both heaven and earth; they and everything in them are mine. I, the Lord, have spoken! “I will bless those who have humble and contrite hearts, who tremble at my word.
    .
    Matthew 18:4 (NLT)

So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.

“On the cross He did not act like an animal, but He was treated like one so that you and I may become truly human. His humble love makes a way for us to be rescued from sin and pride and welcomed into a life of humble obedience.”
    .
That statement paints such a picture!
    .
The sad thing about pride is we actually have none when we prostrate ourselves/lower ourselves to sin, but we have everything when we prostrate ourselves before God!

The song Heart of Worship immediately came to mind today. I went in search of a version to share and love both of these!

  12. Cheryl Blow says:

Like so many of you, I was hit with this! The need to humble myself! Micah 6:8 and this verse.: “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.”
    ‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭5‬:‭6‬ ‭NIV‬‬

And Wendy, feeling superior to some! God nudged me on that! I had to repent! Even our thoughts!

So thankful, God keeps working in us!

Praying for all! Praising for weather out of the 100’s!!

  13. Rhonda J. says:

Oh my first thought was…I wish God would do that today- take all prideful people and leaders down in this way! It would sure make a statement right?! Then I thought, well darn, I would have been eating grass, and well, that wouldn’t taste good! lol.
It is so easy to be prideful in today’s world because, well, we are trained to be proud of ourselves as toddler on up!! We get praise when we do well! When we accomplish goals. We get paid more for our brains and savvy. We get popular for our great performances and on magazine covers–yet, their lives are not for God! I want them taken down a few notches!
Then I, put myself in a higher category because “I” love God and try to live by his standards!” Yet I can get prideful in this arena as well. We have to be humble, poor in Spirit, and Meek. Even sad.
A good “knock down” is often good for us! Just like our parents used to say..well, I can’t remember what they would say! BUT, it is something like, oh, I know- Don’t get too big for your britches! Good parents taught us to be humble. To be more team than I. Be gracious.

As Christians, it is simple to remember one of my favorite verses Romans 12:2. Do not be conformed to this world…BUT BE transformed by the renewing of your mind that by testing you can discern what is God’s will, what is perfect, and acceptable, and good!
    His Way, not the worlds.
Jesus laid down his life, so that we may live. Forgiven and Redeems, Restored, and Holy. For we are to be Holy as He is Holy. It is sanctification, but that takes diligence and time. But if we are a Christ-follower we must submit to him, surrender our will to his, and it will certainly clash with everything around us. We see it more and more. I am praying we stand firm and wear the armor of God, and be a Daniel! And a Meshach, O, S. For we will be in Lion’s den, we are. But God will shut the Lion’s mouth, and we can influence those around us in testimony when that happens. They notice it more the bigger our tests are. So when we go through this, remember it is a time to shine for the Glory of God!! That’s what I tell them a Jail! They are watching you. It may seem all is against you, But God, if He is for you, Who can stand against you. Our enemies may win for a short time, but OUR LORD, OUR JESUS, OUR SAVIOR is coming back for us soon! Is your oil in your lamp, are you waiting anxiously for our Bride-groom?! Many things to remember today! :)

Are we living as the Babylonians? Are we conforming to this world? Do we do as they do, or do we follow GOD and all his precepts. We can’t be on the fence, or lukewarm. That is the worst place to be.

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Psalm 29:11 “The Lord gives his people strength. The Lord blesses them with peace. (NLT)

    2. Cee Gee says:

Great comparison: toddler training, etc.! ❤
Your first paragraph made me chuckle- your reaction to eating grass.
Actually the “prodigal son ate worse things come to think of it!

    3. Mercy says:

      ❤️ amen :)

    4. Teresa Cooper Donley says:

“Don’t get too big for your britches!” I heard that, as well as “Don’t get above your raising!”

I think we can all suffer from pride. God, please forgive me.

  14. Stephanie Hess says:

An amazing and convicting reminder!!!! Praise over Pride!!!!

  15. Adrienne says:

Let my life reflect praise and not pride. I’ve thought this before… I didn’t think I was really a prideful person, but I think I really am. Forgive me, Lord. ❤️

  16. Mari V says:

I too, (as Tina said as well) felt pain in my heart when read: “On the cross He did not act like an animal, but He was treated like one so that you and I may become truly human.” My heart aches to read that. Our sweet Jesus did this for YOU and I. Had more to say, but out of time. Love you all SO much! Happy Monday!

  17. Gina Glennon says:

    Amen!

  18. Traci E Gendron says:

Is it pride or hurtful feelings to feel on the outside of my husbands adult kids.I was awake from 3:00am on. I keep circling about so many obvious facts about the daughter in law to be. I think I’m going to need some very wise counsel to get through this.

I need to get down on the ground with God. To repent. To ask for protection being around so many unbelievers that feel my beliefs are wacky. It is a very lonely feeling.

    1. Rhonda J. says:

I felt the same way Traci around my husband’s adult kids when we were first married. Spending time around them was really hard. Especially Holidays, as they “celebrate” totally different then my ideal! It was a pull/push with my husband as well. When it was at our house I could implement how I chose and hoped my husband would be supportive, but it was such a challenge. Especially when the Grands came into the picture. For I wanted them to KNOW the true meaning of Thanksgiving and Christmas. I think it is a great time to separate yourself as a Christian. Tell your husband you are going to excuse yourself when they start cussing, drinking, and watching things not appropriate. I mean…would we have ever watched the things we tolerate today with our parents, or talked in such a way? It is respect. And we deserve it, and our beliefs. My husband did come around to my way which I am so thankful for, and is important. It’s not an easy thing, so thank you for sharing. It definitely divides us. So I like to remember the scripture that does tell us in the end that children will not respect parents. That families will be divided. And though we should love our families, we cannot conform to this world, we are to be set apart. If my husband wants me to be with his family he has to respect what I will tolerate. Many times I have just had to say…no thank you.
This is a great subject to talk about more on our FB page! I was hoping we would get great topics there to discuss further!

    2. Teresa Cooper Donley says:

Living your Christian life in front of them is the best sermon they may hear. Praying for you, Traci ❤️

  19. Julie Katz says:

  20. Wendy B says:

Oh…this one hits a wee bit close today and on the heels of a message I heard yesterday that spoke of pride as well. I may not be prideful in the same way as King Neb, but goodness, there are countless times my prideful thoughts come into play.
Forgive me Lord for my pridefulness, self righteous thoughts and words, or for a superior mindset or words that come tumbling out. Remove my thoughts and heart of pride to a posture of thoughtful humility, of respectful kindness, and an increased awareness of your heart of gentleness. Teach me your ways O Lord and lead me today. Amen

  22. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

“Jesus was rightfully exalted and chose to be humbled to save us from our glory stealing pride.” Amen.
    .
Nebuchadnezzar’s downfall was himself, if he only could hear how he sounded – “I have built”, “my power”, “my majesty”.
    .
What’s right in the middle of the word sin? “I”, that ought to be a warning to us!
    .
It’s so easy to take all the credit for ourselves, without even thinking at times. But the realization is – everything we have, everything we do, everything we are – is all because of Christ. To Him be the glory!
    —
I saw “Daniel and the Fiery Furnace” yesterday – it was SO well done! Sometimes we forget that Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach & Abednigo were real people living in a real world and their faith was really put to the test. Yet they stood firm and did not bow the knee! Because they were humble and obedient, God rewarded their faithfulness.
    .
We serve that same great and Mighty God!
    .
I love how movies like this and shows like The Chosen and The House of David bring the Bible to life and motivate and inspire me to live a better life for the kingdom!
    —
    Happy Monday She’s – have a blessed day! ❤️

    1. Wendy B says:

      s-I-n – good point Sharon

      Amen ❤️

    2. Traci E Gendron says:

“I” sounds like our president. I wish he wouldn’t do that…

      1. Jana says:

I agree. That was my thought as well.

    3. Rhonda J says:

Agree, LOVE shows that depict the Bible. I watched the Live last night from Dallas Jenkins, and they are gearing up for the release of season 6! And 3 more days of filming the FINAL season 7. I love that they said it is in the process of being translated in 500 languages! It is bringing Jesus to so many people and regions! Just amazing!

I can’t wait to see the Daniel movie!

    1. Rhonda J. says:

It saddens me that our list has become so long. :/ Lifting ALL of our loved ones up to you Lord, that you will humble them that they may KNOW that you are God Almighty, Creator, the Alpha and Omega, King of kings, Lord of Lords! That you sent you Son FOR us, and shall they find You and be humbled from their ways, and run home to the Father, who will rush to meet them and put a heavenly robe around them and prepare a feast!! We know they are yours, but have gotten prideful, but you will do just what is needed to bring them back to you! Thank you Lord, we praise you ahead of time for this! In Jesus name, amen.

Woke up this morning with Elevation Rhythm & Josiah Queen’s song “Amazing!” stuck in my head. “Hallelujah to the man on the middle cross, cause He didn’t owe the debt but He paid it off” The ultimate example of humbling yourself before God! Praise be to Jesus!

Daniel’s counsel to Neb, “Therefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you: break off your sins by practicing righteousness, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the oppressed, that there may perhaps be a lengthening of your prosperity.” Sounds like Micah 6:8 to me.
    .
May you all have a blessed day

Yes! “He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?”

  34. Searching says:

Humanity in general underestimates the power and destruction of the sin of pride. We see it throughout the Bible, we see it play out everyday with our own selves, those around us, local and world leaders.
Lord, please forgive me, guide me to recognize when pride is running the show in my life rather than You. Daniel 4:27 …break off your sins …
    .
Proverbs 11:2 When pride comes, then comes shame; But with the humble is wisdom.
Proverbs 13:10 By pride comes nothing but strife, But with the well-advised is wisdom.
Proverbs 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.
    .
Without Him, Mylon Le Fevre, 1963 (Side note, he was 17 when he wrote this song)
    .
Without Him, I Could Do Nothing,

    Without Him, I’d Surely Fail.

Without Him, I Would Be Drifting,

Like A Ship Without A Sail.
    .
    Chorus:
    Jesus, Oh Jesus.

    Do You Know Him Today?

    Please Don’t Turn Him Away.

    Oh Jesus, Oh Jesus!

Without Him, How Lost I Would Be.
    .
    Without Him, I’d Be Dying,

    Without Him, I’d Be Enslaved;

Without Him, Life Would Be Worthless

But With Jesus, Thank God I’m Saved!
    .
    Chorus

On the cross He did not act like an animal, but He was treated like one so that you and I may become truly human.
    .
This sentence brought tears to my eyes! OMG, put that way, my heart hurts a lot!
    .
As You gift me a new day, I ask forgiveness and repent Lord God, of my self-exaltation, and in the tears of realisation, I humbly kneel before You now, sorrow-filled at who I have become.
Forgive me Lord, Forgive me, please as I exchange my heart of pride to a heart of praise, in Jesus’s name…
    .
    BUT GOD..
    .
